  1. Hunter X Hunter : I'm Currently Hooked Here.@aikay203d

I’m only about ten episodes into Hunter × Hunter, and I already do get why people never shut up about this anime, yeah, It doesn’t try too hard at the beginning, It doesn’t throw any heavy drama at you immediately or force you to take it seriously, Instead, it eases you in with a calm tone, bright visuals, and a main character who feels way too pure for the kind of world he is stepping into.

The opening scenes on Whale Island feel peaceful and almost nostalgic, Gon fishing, smiling, and talking about becoming a Hunter like it is the most natural dream in the world makes everything feel light at first, There is something very comforting about how the anime starts, like it wants you to relax before things get complicated, and honestly, that calm beginning makes the later scenes hit harder.

Once the Hunter Exam begins, that soft tone slowly starts to crack, the long run during the first phase already tells you this exam isn’t a joke, People dropping out, collapsing, or straight up disappearing sets the mood quietly, nobody explains much, You are just expected to keep up , just like the contestants, and I really liked that, It makes the world feel real and unforgiving without needing dramatic speeches.

Then there’s Hisoka, every scene he appears in instantly changes the atmosphere, he smiles too much, moves too calmly, and somehow makes even silence feel threatening, Watching him casually eliminate other applicants like it’s nothing was the first moment I thought, Okay, this anime is darker than it looks, He’s not loud or aggressive , he’s unsettling, and that makes him interesting.

What really pulled me in, though, are the friendships forming during the exam, Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio feel like such an unlikely group, yet their chemistry works so well, Their conversations feel natural, not forced, Killua especially caught my attention early on, He is cheerful, playful, and relaxed, but there are moments where the anime reminds you that something about him isn’t normal.

That one scene where Killua removes a man’s heart during the exam and casually hands it back? Yeah..... that moment alone changes how you see him, It is shocking, but it is done so casually that it almost feels scarier, And then, right after, he is back to smiling and joking like nothing happened, that contrast is really well done.

I also love how the exam phases don’t rely only on strength, Cooking tests, teamwork, strategy, and decision-making all matter, there is a quiet tension in scenes where characters have to choose who to trust or how far they are willing to go, Even without flashy battles, the anime just keeps you engaged.

Gon himself is an interesting lead, he is kind, very optimistic, and also fearless, but not in a loud heroic way kind of, he does not overthink danger, he just moves forward, and that makes some scenes feel slightly unsettling, like you are watching a child step into situations he does not fully understand yet.

So visually, the anime looks bright and kinda friendly, which makes the darker moments stand out even more, and the contrast between cheerful colors and sudden violence or tension works surprisingly well, It just keeps you on edge because you never know when the tone might even shift.

Yeah... I'm only ten episodes in, and Hunter × Hunter already feels layered, yeah, It is fun, adventurous, slightly creepy at times, and emotionally grounded, you can tell there is more depth waiting ahead, and that is exciting, It feels like the calm before a storm and honestly, that is what makes me want to keep watching, I am definitely in for the long run.

First Image is gotten from IMDb , others are from my movie player

  2. Anime Review: Hunter x Hunter@seunruth335d

When I first heard about Hunter x Hunter, I was skeptical. Another shonen anime? Another young boy chasing dreams? I had already watched Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, and all the other major names in the genre. I felt I had seen it all—the training arcs, the power-ups, the loud speeches about friendship and determination. So, I brushed off Hunter x Hunter more times than I can count.

But something kept tugging at me. Maybe it was the constant recommendations from friends or the countless online discussions describing it as "the most underrated masterpiece" or "not your typical shonen." Eventually, curiosity got the better of me. I hit play. And that decision changed how I look at storytelling, character development, and anime as a whole.

From the first episode I could tell Hunter x Hunter was something different. It begins with Gon Freecss, a 12-years-old boy; he lives in Whale Island and dreams that he could become a Hunter and search his separated father, Ging. Typical set up, eh? However, peeling is soon to begin and you soon find out that this is not your typical coming-of-age story.

Hunter x Hunter is something truly captivating, and it is because the manga never stops reinventing itself. When you think you start to understand, the story is twisted, sometimes subtly, sometimes violently, and you are forced into a completely different mood. The plot twists are not only plot twists, but thematic developments.

The Hunter Exam arc was entertaining and exciting and established the tone and the pace. Then there was Heavens Arena and all of a sudden, Nen was brought up-a power system that is so rich in depth and with philosophical meanings, that I even re-watched scenes to piece through it. And just as I got comfortable, the anime just dumped me into Yorknew City, where things got dark and the stakes were even higher and the moral compass were even more grey than before.

Then there was the Chimera Ant arc- a masterpiece of a masterpiece. That is where Hunter x Hunter had its skin peeled off. A kid-friendly adventure evolved into a serious search of what it is to be human. The philosophical issues, the emotional charge, the tragic deconstruction of characters- I was hooked, shaken and emotionally drained in the most positive way.

Let’s talk about the characters—because, honestly, they are the heart of Hunter x Hunter.

Gon is unlike any protagonist I’ve ever met. He’s kind, bright, and idealistic, but as the series unfolds, we witness something rare: his descent. Gon's development challenges the idea of "heroism." He’s not always right. He’s not always good. He’s human—flawed, impulsive, and sometimes terrifying.

And then there is Killua- oh, Killua. His trip in many senses is the heart of the show. Having been born into a family of assassins, being trained to kill since his early years, Killua begins as cold and detached. However, in his friendship with Gon we learn of his heart, his vulnerability and his staunch loyalty. Some of the most emotional moments to me were his inner struggles of self worth, control, and love.

And we should not leave Hisoka out, he is probably the most over the top and creepy villain in history. Hisoka loves to hate (hates to love) because he is the Joker of the group, the creepily charismatic villain that you can never stop watching. Whenever he appeared on the screen, the tension was there.

Other characters such as Kurapika, Leorio, Meruem, Komugi and even the Phantom Troupe had their arcs so well written and emotionally attached that it remained with me even after the end credits.

In addition to the story and the combat, Hunter x Hunter explores in depth complicated themes- identity, morality, trauma, revenge, power, and love.

The revenge mission of Kurapika against the Phantom Troupe demonstrates how revenge can take control over a person. The tragic love story of Meruem and Komugi raises the question, can even the most vile creatures develop, fall in love and experience empathy? It is so misplaced that it makes Gon obsessed with power and justice to an extent that we must question the very notion of what makes a hero.

This anime does not feed you the answers. It makes you wonder, feel, think. It does not underestimate its audience in terms of intelligence and emotional sophistication. Although certain individuals complain about the somewhat inconsistent animation of Hunter x Hunter (2011), I would say that it is just beautifully done where necessary. The animation in the emotional and action scenes is amazing. Just watch the scene of the transformation of Gon or the final chess game between Meruem and Komugi. Chills. Every. Time.

And the music? The soundtrack is subtle yet powerful. Tracks like “Requiem Aranea” or “Understanding” perfectly capture the emotional weight of key scenes. It’s not flashy, but it’s purposeful—and that’s what makes it so effective.

Hunter x Hunter was not merely an anime experience; it was a life experience. It made me remember how important growth is, how complicated people are and that sometimes, even the best intentions may bring about pain.

At times I found myself laughing. I gasped moments. There were times when I would stop the screen to take a breath with my eyes watery.

I envy you, in case you have not seen it yet. Since you are in store of a ride you cannot forget. A tale of the naivete of childhood, of the values that survive into the adult world, with the echoes of those lessons.

  3. 🎯 Hunter x Hunter – Adventure, Ambition, and the Bonds We Choose@zeruxanime335d

Hunter x Hunter isn’t just another shonen—it’s an odyssey. Created by Yoshihiro Togashi (Yu Yu Hakusho), this series blends thrilling battles, intricate strategies, and a deep emotional core. Whether you watch the 1999 version or the 2011 remake, its storytelling remains as sharp as ever.

The first time I watched it, I expected a fun adventure. What I found was a series that challenges the genre, building arcs full of tension, moral dilemmas, and unforgettable characters.

Gon Freecss is a cheerful, determined boy who dreams of becoming a Hunter—a licensed elite capable of tracking treasures, creatures, or even people. His main goal? To find his father, a legendary Hunter who left him as a baby.

Along the way, Gon meets Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio—each with their own reasons for becoming Hunters. Their bond grows through trials that test not only their skills, but their morals.

    🪄 Strategy Over Sheer Strength

Unlike many action series, Hunter x Hunter focuses on intelligence, adaptability, and psychological warfare. The power system, Nen, is one of the most detailed and strategic in anime, making every fight feel like a chess match with life-or-death stakes.

Victory isn’t always about being the strongest—it’s about being the smartest and most resourceful.

🌍 A World That Feels Alive

From the Hunter Exam to the Chimera Ant arc, Hunter x Hunter builds a world full of diverse cultures, dangerous landscapes, and morally gray conflicts. Every location feels distinct, with its own challenges and atmosphere.

The series also takes risks—shifting tones, experimenting with pacing, and allowing characters to grow in unpredictable ways.

💫 A Shonen That Redefines the Genre

Hunter x Hunter is about more than the hunt—it’s about friendship, sacrifice, and the cost of chasing your dreams. It’s a series that respects its audience, weaving complexity and heart into every arc.

If you want an anime that’s as clever as it is emotional, Hunter x Hunter should be at the top of your list.

    Hello, my dear otakus.

One of my favorite anime series is Hunter x Hunter for its great animation and its wonderful story about spiritual beings who mingle with humans and monsters.

Gon is a twelve-year-old boy who left home in search of his father, an expert hunter, motivated by being a great hunter himself and finding his father. Gon meets his best friends, and over time, he gets to know them even better. His friends are named Kurapika, Killua, and Leorio.

My drawing was done on a black background with bright colors. I used white to add a touch of shadows to make them stand out.

  5. (ENG/SPA) HISOKA: The Nippon Joker Villain Review@promete0sz550d

    jAoQgkl8YJX07NyfRAHZ8z6DYbe.jpg

There is something in the humanity of the masses that connects that large number of people and characters in various stories that are Clowns, Harlequins or Jokers, the detail of the above is that these narrative elements that conquer vast audiences are villains, it is as if the comic evil devour the concept Clown or Joker generating a contrast that unconsciously attracts us to achieve satisfaction by fracturing, collapse and destroy everything that society establishes as good and right.

Hisoka Morow is a character of Hunter X Hunter in which this review is going to be focused because it fits, engages that character named Hisoka with the reflection that I just wrote, that is, he is a villain character that like all Joker aesthetically is striking, makes it attractive to the eyes of an audience that consumes a product in this case visual, if you are encouraged to know him, I invite you to see that anime that has marked with its great characters like Hisoka to many of the fandom of anime and manga.

    • Hisoka an exotic and bizarre character

These were the two characteristics that most caught my attention of this character, his creator drew him in such a way that scales in these drawings to convey something more than evil with certain sadistic characteristics which is noticeable in the image where Hisoka holds an Ace of Spades where both are stained in blood, the various images of this character are hypnotic.

All the above mentioned can be seen in the thumbnail and images, this drawing definitely has an aura that reaches the viewer and that happens several times during the story and the evolution of conflicts that the character has because if I see him as a villain but it is one that tends to neutral, I mean that he has a goal, fight with the best prey and is on that path that destroys everything that gets in the way.

    image.png

    untitled.gif

    • The Nippon Joker

This was the first thought that came to my mind when I saw his first appearance in the anime, I want to emphasize that I saw it in my college days while watching other anime fashionable at the time as Naruto and Bleach, my friends talked about this anime and so I started to see and met this great villain who met all my expectations.

I am talking about the decade of 2010 and as I am a fan of DC and that Lore of Super Heroes, I think it is impossible not to make the comparison with that Joker of that famous Nolan movie that many of us saw in cinema but this character is actually decades older than that specific Joker and that I mistakenly associated them and this I want to connect it with what I mentioned at the beginning of this review.

There is something about clowns, harlequins and Jokers that inspires people and in their process of further creation, the best inventions are those that I consider have deformed those elements that should be fun and healthy even for children to take them to fun and dangerous which in my case and I notice that it is also so for the rest of the world ends up delighting.

    image.png

    • Hisoka famous among the female anime audience

This anime is one of the few that even encouraged me to go to the manga to continue watching his story because its author let's say that he takes many breaks haha but that's another story, the point is that as Storytelling I comment that I saw many reactions on youtube to the battles that happened and I noticed that there were many reactions of girls to this character but not to his fight, if you are a girl I invite you to meet the character because just as I love the voluptuousness of Tsunade in Naruto haha, girls are also free to fall in love with these characters even if they are clown villains, murderers, cruel, strange and bizarre haha.

    • Genuine interaction with the rest of the characters

In this aspect to analyze I think that Hisoka besides being a villain, he is an element that meshes characters and stories in a natural and fluid way attractive to the audience, look at this detail based on the video I leave you of his interaction with Illumi, that video is from Crunchyroll and uses it to motivate its audience to watch Hunter X Hunter and it is an appropriate marketing, coherent because it is just what I highlight in this aspect.

Hisoka offers powerful battles, he's wacky but at the same time he's funny with all the elements of his past that make him an integral character, with history, in fact he even reminds me slightly of Orochimaru and his obsession with Sasuke, only in this case his obsession is Gon.

He has powerful fights, flashy powers, he is one of the strongest Nen users, although his technique is not the most attractive for me, but in the fandom there is no doubt about the captivating aura with which this character has conquered the anime world.

If you don't know him, I hope this review encourages you to know him and to the great majority that already know him, you can tell me in comments what you like the most about this character, to me it calls my attention when he interacts with Machi Komachine one of my favorites in that Phantom Brigade.

I dedicate each and every one of my posts and videos to my little dog named princess, we called her chiquito, she is no longer with us but from heaven she will see that her existence was valuable and the most beautiful thing that will exist in my heart and soul.

  6. Hunter x Hunter movie: The unearthed past [ENG/ESP]@cjlugo565d

    The_Last_Mission.jpg Source

The official title is "The last Mission" but I thought it was more appropriate: "The unearthed past" because the whole plot of this movie is based on past problems in Netero's life, or rather in the hunter's association.

The two movies in this fantastic anime only try to expand a little the Hunter x Hunter universe, one of them takes us times after the first battle of Kurapika against the spiders, later I will be talking a little about it. But in this film the central theme is broader as it encompasses the hunters' association.

Something that I liked and goes very unnoticed in the central story, is the existence of the shadow squadron, one that was founded by a friend of Netero when he would become president of the association. His name was Jed, and like Netero he was a powerful martial artist, even somewhat enlightened like Netero.

    wp12542497-hunter-x-hunter-netero-wallpapers.jpg Source

The movie takes place moments after Killua and Gon meet Kite, a little before the Chimera Ant saga, in that interval it can be placed. Like all anime movies, the problem is solved in the same edition, there are no extra chapters or anything like that, all in one sitting.

Again we have as main characters Gon, Kurapika, Killua, Leorio and of course Hisoka, although the latter has very little participation, I think they included him more for his past environment in the Sky Coliseum, but he doesn't really do much in the movie.

There are also other important characters in the development of Gon and Killua, which will have slight participation. One of the themes that the production wants to show us is the damage that resentment can do, resentment, and how it brings great consequences, many of them deadly.

The Shadow Squadron in its attempt to take revenge comes up with a plan to destroy the association, and uses a power opposite to the Nen, which is called ON. This power is totally different from what is known, but it is practically a power based on rancor, and those who wield it must make a contract with conditions, and the more risky it is, the more power they obtain. In this sense it is similar to the conditions that are imposed on the Nen, as in the case of Kurapika to give an example.

    wp4015687-hunter-hunter-the-last-mission-wallpapers.jpg Source

This is the context of the story. In particular I was entertained, but I didn't like it very much, I'm not usually a lover of anime movies because everything happens in the blink of an eye, and one of the things I like is the development of the characters, or knowing more about them. At least in this short story, I got stung with Jed and his 3 loyal servants, very little is shown for obvious reasons.

However, I conclude that it is worth watching it, as I said before, to expand a little more knowledge about everything that encompasses this series, and now even more, that new chapters are coming in the manga, which I look forward to.

    Thanks for reading

    Spanish Version

Hunter x Hunter movie: El pasado desenterrado

  7. Short recommendation #4 - HxH / Szybka polecajka - HxH@herosik629d

    hxh.jpg

I admit that there was supposed to be a different text today (it will probably be on Sunday), but so as not to leave you without anything, I will post something lighter today.

HxH has been an important title for nerds for decades. I remember that, as a child, I saw various advertisements (in the form of large banners, anime screenshots, manga stills, stickers, etc.) of this anime. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm almost sure that when I was on a trip to France, I saw a large advertising banner with HxH (and certainly with NGE, Lupine 3, City Hunter, and of course DB, as a child I only associated it and NGE , because it was more popular among older colleagues around me). Many years passed before I met HxH. I loved this anime after the first viewing. The second one was even better because I noticed additional advantages. Then I watched it a third time, but stopped halfway through, I don't know why. Then I talked many times with friends who were either fans of HxH, but criticized it for many things (kind of like me and DBZ - even though they have more or less reasons to complain, they were still interested in learning the rest of the story). I have thought about their arguments for a long time over the years and a year ago I decided to confront them. Watching HxH without emotions disturbing my judgment, but having too many responsibilities, which means I can't watch anime like I did when I was a teenager... I had to admit that the critics were right. Despite this, HxH is still one of the better titles in the battle-shounen category. This is due to several things that I will present to you today.

Power System. If DB and Bleach are too simple for you and you are looking for something more complex, then you have Naruto. Oh no, I forgot that the Power System in Naruto was broken at some point. So you have One Piece and Hunter x Hunter. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, it is difficult for me to say which one is clearly better. However, I can tell you why I prefer the one with HxH. Because it is a bit more complex, even too complicated for some, and it is clear that the author of HxH is a gamer. He focuses more on statistics and hit-boxes (hitting weak, less protected points) than other comic book authors. This is a dream title for all people who love analyzing numbers and different scenarios. Similarly to the OP, there is a rock-paper-scissors principle here (one counters the other, the second counters the third, and the third counters first), but much more extensive and in-depth compared to one of the oldest games in the world.

My second favorite thing about HxH is the characters. I don't think there is a hero (or heroine) I don't like. Mainly because I feel like they have a life of their own and do their own thing as soon as I turn off an episode of the anime/finish reading a chapter of the manga. It may sound abstract, but so far I've only seen it in OP. In other battle shounens, I have the impression that the characters are mindless NPCs straight from old games - they stand in one place and wait for the player to talk to them.

The third reason is their declaration and willingness to implement it. Most battle-shounen heroes, including the characters from the OP, limit themselves only to saying that they want to kill someone or take minimal steps to do so. In HxH, if a character tells someone he wants to kill them, he goes for it or at least fails to do so.

Creativity and imagination. The HxH universe is basically our (only slightly changed) world with the addition of superhuman powers and Nen energy, which works like the power in Star Wars - it is in every person and surrounds us. I normally criticize it, but usually the creators add little of themselves, unlike Yoshihiro Togashi. The author of HxH used many elements known from our world and adapted them to his needs. For example, exorcists/doctors specializing in Nen who can undo or heal curses or injuries caused by mysterious energy. Treasure hunters who dig through history in search of a chance to get rich. Or some ancient beliefs or curses associated with them, something like the curse of Pharoah or Montezuma in the case of people who tried to rob the tombs/temples of the rulers. There are also elements for lovers of conspiracy theories - some information about the world of HxH has been kept secret so as not to cause panic among ordinary people.

I don't want to spoil too much or make the text too long, so I'll stop here. You can watch the anime on Netflix. Although the manga is still being published, I don't think Togashi finished it. Well, the upside is that the anime ended at such a point that it can be considered to have an open ending.

    hxh.jpg

System Mocy. No to macie One Piece i Hunter x Hunter.

Kreatywność i wyobraźnia. Autor HxH wykorzystał wiele elementów znanych z naszego świata i przerobił je do swoich potrzeb.

  8. Chrollo Lucilfer: A Villain Hated and Loved by Many [ENG/ESP]@cjlugo826d

wp2432028-chrollo-wallpapers.jpg Source | Image edited in Adobe Photoshop

In the world of anime there are enemies, villains and characters with dual personalities that tend to fall very well to the audience, Lelouch from Code Geass is one of them and perhaps the most emblematic to give an example, we also have Yagami Light in Death Note, but this time I want to highlight Chrollo Lucilfer, better known as Kuroro in the Hunter x Hunter series, who is the leader of the "spider" or ghost brigade as it has also been called.

The first impression we have of him is undoubtedly negative, and more because he is the leader of those whom Kurapika wants to catch, but as he appears on the scene our perception changes, we are trapped by his great power, strategy and cunning in battles.

Added to that he is a villain with great personality, charming to deceive and charismatic to attract, we see that in several chapters where he uses these "virtues" to steal and achieve his goals. On the other hand he is cruel, he has no compassion towards his enemies or against those who are only victims, but he is a faithful comrade of his subordinates and would do anything for their welfare.

How can such a villain possibly appeal? A good question, and this is where I applaud Togashi-sensei for his fantastic way of creating characters, and also developing them, because Kuroro is not only a villain but he represents a whole city, one that has been practically thrown away.

    wp2432201-chrollo-wallpapers.jpg Source

At this point is where the hatred for this character turns into love for some, and it is when you know the background of the character, it is as if we judge a book by its cover or a person by their actions without knowing the context. I remember once a long time ago having a debate with someone who was trying to romanticize the spider members, but the reality is that they all execute evil deeds, however there is a past context why they do all the things we see in the series.

Knowing their background does not make them justifiable but understandable, and I think it is a life lesson that the mangaka wanted to teach us, because there are people who become a scum for society due to their past, the absence of parents, due to external cruelty and indifference, the injustice suffered in childhood and many more things, are aspects that we have to take into account before making a definitive judgment about a person.

With the character of Kuroro this is precisely what happens, so much so that many people wondered if he could really be considered a villain. As far as I am concerned, he is, but not one who is used to destroying humanity out of ambition, but one who acts in partnership with his team to achieve what they were denied: a dignified life.

Finally and to conclude, I consider that it is one of the most striking characters of the whole series, I only regret what we all already know, that it has not yet been continued. Because of that we will not know what will be the final development of the character, but as far as it was worked it was pretty good. Now, if you've read me this far I thank you, but tell me, do you hate it or love it? I look forward to your opinions in the comments.

  9. Hunter x Hunter: An incredible anime with an unfinished story [ENG/ESP]@cjlugo859d

wp8808168-hunter-x-hunter-1999-wallpapers.jpg Source | Image edited in Adobe Photoshop

There are stories that must have their point and end... Hunter x Hunter is one of them. I can't conceive of leaving this world without seeing the end of this work, and not only this one but also others that share the same misfortune. However, the subject of my post will be this anime, I will talk about others later, God willing.

Hunter x Hunter has an exceptional story, from the beginning to where it has been written it has a lot of quality, not only in its plot line but in the development of its characters, so much so that many fans have appreciation for the villains. Has it happened to you with another anime where you love the villains? Well, in this awesome story you might, and if it has already happened to you with another anime you know very well what I'm talking about.

It all starts with a "very childish" scene but it has a lot of depth, the whale island is the scenario where the young Gon starts his adventure to become a hunter and find his famous father, a legendary hunter. Quickly the author hooks us with this plot, but when we see the outcome of it chapter by chapter we are totally fascinated.

I know I'm being very subjective in this aspect because I love it, but maybe you already saw this series and you don't like it as much as I do, the truth is that Hunter x hunter has everything necessary to be on the pedestal where it is. Even so, from this point I will be as objective as possible.

    wp8091309-hunter-x-hunter-pc-wallpapers.png Source

Each of the characters has its own story or arc within the main story, Gon is the protagonist but in his journey as a hunter he meets Killua, Kurapìka, Leorio, Hisoka and many more who have a great weight in the character we see in Gon from the beginning to where it has been written; the same happens with the rest of the named characters, they complement each other in a special way with the protagonist.

The mangaka Yoshijiro Togashi did a great job in this sense because it is not something simple to do, in fact it is one of the great challenges of the writers, but Togashi sensei has covered that aspect in an exceptional way.

Now talking a little bit about what can be found in the series, there are many values that come to the fore, friendship is one of them, loyalty another extremely important one, courage, sacrifice, how exalted it is in this work, it is definitely an anime that can be seen from many perspectives. The first time I saw it I was just a child but some time later I watched it again with my children and I did not miss the opportunities it gave me to teach them about these important things that have been lost today.

The arcs are long and contain very shocking scenes, added to that there is a violence present but that has been very well executed and sometimes seems extremely moderate although it really is not. The story accompanied by a narrator makes us think a lot, especially in the Chimera ants arc, one of the most impressive, there we can see and enjoy many currents of thought, which is pleasant for any viewer.

    wp8808045-hunter-x-hunter-1999-wallpapers.jpg Source

One of the most striking characters is Kurapika, who belongs to the Kurta clan, a clan that is characterized by having scarlet eyes, reason why they were practically exterminated by the Ghost Brigade or the Spider as it is also known. His initial arc lies in revenge, although it is not something positive it is one of the most exciting, and the end it has is very satisfying.

Another character who shares a great story is Killua, a member of the prestigious Zoldick family of assassins, but who does not want to follow the same path as his family and much less so when he meets Gon, who will eventually become his best friend. Both go through many challenges and dangers, situations that help them strengthen their friendship above all things.

Finally and to conclude I will talk a little about Hisoka, presented as a supposed antagonist and murderer, at first glance he looks like the bad guy of the series but as we get to know him and when his past is revealed we realize that he is not as he seems because there is a story that precedes all his actions. I really have a lot to say about this anime, but up to this point I consider that it is good, I hope that its mangaka can finish it, otherwise it would be unfortunate, even the same case of Berserk could happen which would be very sad for those of us who like this anime and for the end of this excellent story.

  11. HxH after years part 2 with ??? / HxH po latach część 2 z ???@herosik1319d

    hxh oku ENG.jpg

The series leveled up with the start of the next arc. Heavens Arena is guided by chaotic, not to say idiotic rules, it is repetitive, but ... Everything happens faster, which significantly increased the pleasure of watching for me. Couldn't it have been like this before, Madhouse? After the gaming introduction, we got equally gaming fights - like when we play a game, when we have too high a level of experience for the level of difficulty of a given stage. Get used to it, there will be more such elements closer to games than to comics. Does it bother me? No, although now I fully understand my colleagues' comments - at times I have the impression that Togashi literally copied familiar attitudes, fragments, ways of learning new techniques, dialogues (conversations between the player and the NPC, the author's narration in general) and other elements. It's a bit lazy, but at least the exposition is interesting, because we got another nice example that Togashi likes to surprise the viewer - Zushi came out really bad-ass when he turned on the aura. I agree, his version from "Naruto" is much cooler, and his first serious fight is so good that my friends and I showed it to others for encouragement. But I can't agree that the boy is a complete asshole compared to Lee. Although he is a 100% cliché character for this type of anime, his stubbornness and quite a lot of strength could make an impression. Especially since Killua shit himself in fear in a short time... He would probably have to kill him because I don't see the possibility of it being a trade like Meruem vs Netero. We also saw another Nen trick (although this time I'm not sure if it's a Magician's trick or an ability resulting from the degree of knowledge of Nen) by Hisoka - I mean the moment when he hid behind a lady working for the Sky Arena. On the other hand, in Episode 33, Killua said that he learned another Nen faction (I don't remember which one, I have a bad memory for them) and sees that all or at least most of his tricks are traits of his Nen skills. Key word - majority. Admittedly, I didn't write down all his techniques and I'm not going to verify it, but I remember my discussion with colleagues on the forum - they listed all his techniques, and they couldn't explain every technique in this way, so I assume (as I said in the previous text about HxH ) that Togashi either did a retcon on him, or these skills are, for example, the tricks of Nen exorcists or some other group of people who use this "magic" in their own way.

    H1.jpg

I'll start with Nen, because that's the basis of this series. The power system is more important to the plot and lore here than in most manga of this type. It is very extensive. Very very. I'd say it's a fusion of magic with... Let's say "The Witcher" and the jutsu system of "Naruto". Characters can live for hundreds, and maybe with proper training and genes, two, three thousand years. They can turn any object into a deadly weapon. You can hide an atomic bomb inside a man (although this is more thanks to doctors, scientists and specialists in such use of this energy). You can create items, cure diseases, cast kamehameha, be superhuman in many ways (although not Superman level, more like Goku before the fight with Piccolo Jr. or slightly stronger) and much more and much deeper and broader. It's a complete system. Just as great pacing and excellent storytelling are, in my opinion, the greatest asset of "Kingdom" (and characters a little further), so the power system is the greatest advantage of HxH. Maybe later, as I'm getting closer to the end of the anime, I'll change my mind, but I'm 70% sure I won't. Of the shounens I've met so far, only OP and FMA can rival this.

    H2.jpg

Sure, there were minor bugs sometimes (slightly less than the OP, in my opinion), but outside of FMA, I don't know of any battle-shounen that didn't have them, and HxH (probably) has the fewest. Sure, this is probably largely due to the numerous breaks, which I discussed in the previous part (link below) + HxH for this reason is quite short, despite the rich content, so Togashi had less opportunity to make a mistake, but we also don't know what if it had a lot less breaks and we would be after Dark Continent and one more but shorter arc. Hahaha, nice vision, but probably never going to happen. I don't know what it would be like, I prefer to talk about facts. The fact is that in years of discussion with people, I haven't heard of any anime that could rival HxH in this field. Apart from the above-mentioned FMA and OP. "Naruto" was close, but in this respect, Kishimoto, or rather his followers, have no arguments to convince me otherwise. At some point, in my opinion, starting from the arc with Kakuzu and Hidan, "Naruto" began to deteriorate irreversibly in this respect. Despite a dozen or so epic scenes, e.g. Kakashi's flashbacks, the destruction of Konoha (which was then completely ruined), Jiraiya vs Pain, Gai vs Kisame, etc. But to be fair, I will write about what Kishimoto did better than Togashi, if I find this more. As for the OP, it seems to have more minor bugs, but I don't think it's particularly inferior (in terms of the power system) because of it. I also have outdated information, because I haven't followed him for a long time, so it's hard for me to write fully honestly about it. I think it's slightly better than the OP, but worse than the FMA, and I don't think I need to explain the latter. Coming back to Nen, I really like that, unlike most manga of this type, the author pointed out that each of us is different and learning one type of Nen will be impossibly difficult for Hunter A, but Hunter B will handle it without a problem and Hunter C will be able to combine one type with another. And I'm not talking about talent or lack thereof, or superficially understood potential, because such things are in other titles. I am a supporter of generalization myself, because on the one hand, many, not to say the majority, of our behavior and reactions (contrary to the propaganda of some people) are quite repetitive (which is proven by criminology, psychology, etc.), but I am unable to reflect one argument - one a small difference can affect our whole person, which makes each of us different, even to a small degree. Another cool aspect that complements the theories of Hunters (and fits my thesis, which I presented above - we can talk a lot about our supposed uniqueness, but if we are watched by someone experienced, who knows us and has developed analytical thinking, it will quickly "sum up" us) , is Hisoka's classification method. This makes sense in that only a few individuals (let's say Chrollo Lucifer, Zoldyck's father and grandfather, Netero, possibly Hisoka, although in his case it would be cynicism, cunning and a strong ego) are able to fully control their reactions and reflexes . And the fact that someone hides their true motivations or character is also visible. Even if not at first glance, it can be easily or very easily figured out thanks to shit-testing. An art that women (and Hisoka) have mastered very well - asking a question (preferably tricky or double tricky - i.e. one that hides true intentions behind others, e.g. we know the truth or we have a lot of evidence that the person we ask something did or did not do - then we do not ask directly about a given topic, but we formulate the question in such a way as to get an answer without asking strictly about it.). Nice addition, with this method we have a deeper insight into Nen.

    H3.jpg

As for Heavens Arena, this arc is a bit better than the previous ones, but it's another training arc! Fortunately, it's the last one (and no, there's still a large part of the GI, where they will also train ... Argh ...) and at least we got a reward in the form of a fight with Hisoka at the end + after all, this training is interesting. It is true that we have to assimilate a lot of information, but at least it is given in an attractive form and we are genuinely interested in what will happen next (or at least that was the case with most people who I recommended this anime to and saw it). Besides, the rules that apply in this arena are illogical and were probably created only for the needs of this arc, and Togashi didn't really care about it ... Well, why return to previously known locations? Does anyone like this at all (sarcasm)? Before we get to the final fight, we need to go through an explanation of the rules that prevail in the arena and three opponents who look as weak as the filler characters in "Naruto Shippuuden". The plus is that this thread lasts relatively short, it's not so dragged out, and the situation itself is not 100% cliché. If only because of the approach of young Zoldyck, who behaves like a purebred murderer ... Oh w8, he is ... Never mind, forget about this example xD. The great advantage of HxH is that the characters are not limited to scaring that "oh, now I'm going to hurt you" (as in "Naruto"), as in HxH someone wants to hurt someone real, they do everything to make. Killua can be a sweet boy, a cat-style male lolita, but he can instantly turn into a character you'd better not provoke. Besides, it's nice to see how his approach to people gradually changes. He is slightly more open and more willing to help. I didn't pay any attention to it the last time I saw it, and now I'll be watching the process until I meet Illumi again, when young Zoldyck has to reflect on his behavior. By the way, my opinion of this character has improved a bit, although he is still just a slightly better version of this type of character.

    H4.jpg

    H5.jpg

    H6.jpg

Hisoka, on the other hand, hasn't developed much, but that's okay with me - we'll see him develop in Yorknew and Greed Island. It doesn't bother me, because at the moment it is already intriguing enough and escapes all schemes. His behavior is too ambiguous, as are his reactions to various events. Just because for years I have not met a man with his approach, i.e. searching and breeding his future opponent. I guess only Ou Ki did that, but he did it in a different context - he was looking for talents to make them his trusted commanders, not adversaries. Hisoka is not the best Villain I've met in battle-shounen because of this, but I can count him among the better ones. I really like the scenes with his participation, in which he shows his strength or jokes - e.g. erection and excitement with Gon's approach to combat, scaring Killue and his companion with his aura. I will not describe the fights with these three randoms, because there is nothing to do. In Kastro's case, it was only slightly better - if Hisoka had dealt with him sooner, it would have looked more interesting. And I'm not talking about conversations between characters (I don't mean repeating different things again and again, because it's actually annoying, especially since we got a translation at least once in the episode before) and explaining your power, or how he discovered the opponent's power, etc. . - as I wrote, this element does not bother me in HxH. I love such a translation of my current state (amount of mana, stamina), searching for a new tactic for the next strike, analyzing the opponent and predicting his next move.

    H7.jpg

    H8.jpg

    H H.jpg

    H H 2.jpg

I will end this text on the fight with Hisoka. I waited a long time for it because I was afraid that I would criticize this element of HxH - I thought that I also idealized it due to the fact that I used to love MadHouse studio + I really like HxH. Fortunately, this duel went very well thanks to both the animators and the author of the comic. The animation is smooth, you can feel the power of the blows, as well as the physical and intellectual fitness of both players. It was a great idea (and it's a shame they didn't keep this pace for most of the match, they could have shown most of the translations in post-fight flashbacks) that for about half of the match, we only saw and heard Gon, Hisoka, the announcer, and the referee. Especially the first round was sensational in this respect - 100% attention focused on the fighters, there was not even a soundtrack to distract our attention.

Seria zaliczyła lvl up wraz z rozpoczęciem kolejnego arcu.

Nen to kompletny system.

Poza w/w FMA i OP.

Och w8, on nim jest...

    H8.jpg

A, byłbym zapomniał - jeszcze prawdziwe zakończenie egzaminu.

  13. Thoughts on TotallyNotMark's Analysis of Hunter x Hunter #6: Greed Island Arc (pt.2)@ahmadmanga1701d

TotallyNotMark is Youtuber specializing in #anime analysis. Popular for his Dragon Ball videos, he expanded to other anime series since 2020. He's currently reviewing Berserk after the sad news of the death of its author.

TotallyNotMark notices a lot of the nuances in his first watch-through, that I miss. He's also good at writing analysis, so his insight on good writing is fascinating to me. I'm following his Hunter x Hunter reviews on arc-by-arc-basis, and below is my article reviewing his 6th review, of the series' fifth arc.

    maxresdefault_hxh_greedisland_2.jpg

This is a continuation of my thoughts on TotallyNotMark's Greed Island Arc review. In the previous part, we joined Gon and Killua in a video game, trained a lot, Killua went to the Hunter Exam and got his license, and finally we learned that Hisoka joined the fun under the alias: Chrollo Lucifer. This time, we'll be playing Dodge Ball, with Razor and Tag with the Bomber!

    The Review Video:

    • While I see some sense in TotallyNotMark statement in the opening section of his review, that many parts of Greed Island don't use the mechanic of the world, I do think Togashi uses the setting quite well. It never bothered me...
      • Just knowing they're in a game world, changes the characters' perspective on things.
      • The game gave Gon and Killua a non-lethal reason to start training. A good reason for their teacher to be there, and a way to measure their progress. (Cards are ranked by the difficulty of obtaining them.)
      • In retrospect, the game setting reveals things about Gon and Killua's personality you wouldn't have gotten anywhere else while having an interesting story at the same time. Like Gon's attention to detail even when speaking to NPCs, and how Gon and Killua behave when they don't have an urgent goal to adhere to.

I agree that Togashi could've used the setting better, but that's not necessary to create a good story. One example I want to give is Sword Art Online, every arc up to introduce a different setting to the story. These settings aren't used to enhance the narrative most of the time, but it doesn't make the story nor the setting any less interesting to me.

    • The comparison between the movies Sing and Zootopia at 3:40 put the thought into perspective, so I thank TotallyNotMark for that. I still don't fully agree, as I think an interesting setting itself even if not used correctly, still deserves praise as a setting.

    screenshot_from_2021_11_09_10_28_14.png

    • (5:05 - 6:44) I love the way TotallyNotMark. compared the structure o Greed Island and its effect on the story to previous arcs. When he puts it this way, he's right. Greed Island is a waiting room. There's not a lot of progress, just a lot of lore. I can understand why it seems boring if that's the case.

    • I think TotallyNotMark demands too much focus in the story direction that many weekly Mangaka can't afford to spare in their writing.

      • It's okay to have a side-story arc like the events happening in Greed Island. I also think that the true purpose of this arc is to have Gon and Killua develop their friendship further. As someone explained in a video praising the arc. This setting was the perfect place to do so away from the world.
    • TotallyNotMark looked back at some of the scenes in the first half and realized that they don't affect the overall story of Greed Island. I think that might be the case, but using the Phantom Troupe's role in this arc as an example isn't a good idea. From a structure perspective, they're used to introduce some rules of the game, introduce Razor to the reader and be the reason for Hisoka's involvement! Maybe it's only context, but it's also an efficient use of characters, isn't it?

    screenshot_from_2021_11_09_11_11_09.png

    • I totally agree with this review on Razor! He's my favorite part of this arc!!

    • The first attempt failed, (quite intentionally,) but at least we got Hisoka on the team now. That scene (8:28) was so uncomfortable... I totally understand TotallyNotMark's "Why though?"

    • Dodge Ball = Best Shonen Moment in Hunter X Hunter!! (This is only because most of the best moments in this series are more fit to Seinen Manga than a Shonen one...)

    • The Dodge Ball match was the perfect challenge for Gon. Both from personality and ability points. I like how TotallyNotMark points out that the author uses all the personality traits & powers of the characters involved to add impact to the scene. Gon's tenacity and even Hisoka's Bungee Gum are used for the final point. This was really the best part of the arc, and I'm including the ending that TotallyNotMark loves so much.

    screenshot_from_2021_11_09_11_29_11.png

    • The thing about Killua's hands during the match was messed up. It shows Gon's trust in his best friend, and Killua appreciates that so much. Hence why the scene is uplifting. (12:54.) However, it's also a sign of Gon's worst flaw: He doesn't care about his well-being and is willing to drag his friends down with him to some extent.

    • 15:27: I think most of us felt down when we had to return to Greed Island after the Dodge Ball match ended. Razor felt like a Final Boss material, and Bomber is a terrible DLC Boss. Still, I'm enjoying the lore the rest of the arc provided us, so I didn't mind it so much.

    • Contrasting Gon and Bomber is really interesting, but I never thought of the example at 17:00 of the video. I thought Gon was a good person to get this card by being kind, but I never contrasted this with Bomber's action of getting the cards by swindling.

    • One Piece and Hunter x Hunter are written differently so I agree with what's being said here: (17:30 - 19:00.)

      • I would still recommend one to the fans of the other because they're different.
    • I also agree that Togashi didn't write the Bomber as skillfully as Oda does his villains, but you can't compare a writer's weakness against another's strength. Hunter x Hunter is more realistic in its portrayals of the antagonists. Its subtlety is its strength!

    screenshot_from_2021_11_09_12_17_00.png

    • 19:55: "It used and was necessitated by the rules of the game." That's what I expected you to say at this part.

    • I really love the part where Gon acts so crazy that he makes the Bomber (who killed hundreds of people) step back in fear.

TotallyNotMark knows this by now, but he mistakenly implies in the video that Biksy enhanced her body to be this strong and big. In fact, Bisky's adult form is her true form, and her child form is unexplained usage of Nen that made her look younger after wishing it.

One fan theory regarding this is that she's doing Specialist Hatsu ability. (Or became one at some point in her life.) This result can't be achieved with the 5 other categories of Nen.

    • It's strange but moments like when Gon had to choose which cards to take really take you off-guard with how much sense it makes. After all, Gon isn't known for his intelligence... It seems Gon is only smart when it's tied to his direct goals. He comes with the most creative solutions to unsolvable problems.

    • "..."

    • 23:25: "Hello Mr. Chapter 1."

      • Meeting Kite after so long? Amazing~
      • Meeting Kite while expecting to meet Ging? Not so much~
    • One of the most interesting things about this arc's ending is the meeting between Kite and Gon. (Too bad for people who only watched the 2011 version, but it's explained later, I guess...) Which directly leads to Chimera Ants arc which in my opinion is the best arc in the series anime yet!

    That's all for today's article!

The next part is Chimera Ant's arc. As of this writing, I watched a few minutes of the review video for it. TotallyNotMark's videos offer interesting insights, so I'm excited to see his reaction the some of the scenes in that arc.

These articles take too long to write and publish, but I hope to finish the remaining TotallyNotMark's reviews.

  14. Thoughts on TotallyNotMark's Analysis of Hunter x Hunter #5: Greed Island Arc (pt.1)@ahmadmanga1754d

TotallyNotMark is anime analyzer on Youtube. Popular for his Dragon Ball Analysis videos, he expanded to other anime series since 2020.

I liked TotallyNotMark's analysis style. His newbie perspective is entertaining and since he knows good writing. I'm amazed at the nuances he picks up on his first watch-through. So when he began his Hunter x Hunter reviews, I decided to follow him arc by arc writing my thoughts on his work.

    hxh05_zqejzq8.jpg

This is the 5th part of my thoughts series. This part focuses on Greed Island Arc, which is vastly different than the brutal arc before it.

In preparatioin for this one, I wrote my "Bias Regarding GREED ISLAND Arc" in which I explain why I like the setting. That article offers more insight on my takes on TotallyNotMark in this one, but reading it isn't required. If you're ready, let's jump into the game world:

    The Review Video:

    • The video starts with JoyStation logo, what a good introduction to a review of MMORPG-based arc.

    • Greed Island is my favorite arc if you exclude Meruem parts of the next arc. The premise is good and even the weakest parts of this arc hit home to me. Just the fact that I designed a world like Greed Island before watching it is a huge reason I like it.

    • I didn't know they changed the staff with Greed Island OVA series. I watched the 2011-version only of the arc, and didn't feel the need to go back to the 1999-version. "Because of the change in direction, many fans don't consider it part of the original series." Nice to know.

    • TotallyNotMark says at 4:40 that "Gon proves in every scene how perceptive he is." This remark felt funny even though it's true. "Gon remember elements that he can apply to a later problem."

      • I didn't even consider the significance of Gon's remark "Ging not being the seller," until I heard this!
      • Gon's perceptiveness is more obvious in the Manga than the anime. (As explained by this video.)

    00a.png

    • The plan to not buy the game but to work with whoever buys it is really smart, considering Gon and Killua know they have (little-to-)no chance of actually winning the auction.

    • The Killua's brother segment (6:10-6:55) "Togashi uses Milluki just to make him lose again and again trying to win one of the Greed Island games." This is a writing quirk I love about Togashi. He uses characters we know, in ways that fit their characterization even when they don't offer any narrative pay-off. It's a risky writing style but it adds realism to the world when you think about it.

    • 7:00 Kurapika basically married Chains!

      • "Which suggests that Kurapika didn't conjure a Shovel for the purpose of burying Uvo, but he brought one in advance." I wish I touched on this "Shovel" bit in my third article too, because I'm a part of the fandom that thinks the same it's awesomely funny!!
    • TotallyNotMark described Gon and Killua's power-up strategies in this way: "They decided to lean into their past traumas from their family life." I love that description.

      • #FunFact: Killua's electricity power is only possible in the world on Nen to someone with a background like his, which makes it more awesome.

    01a.png

    Going To Greed Island

    • As Gon goes to the world, the video shows a Manga page from Ch.127. Oh, this manga page! I remember myself reading it, but I only appreciate it now seeing it on TotallyNotMark's video.

    • He says at 9:30 "I'm honestly so jealous I want to be there. But honestly not, because I'll probably almost definitely die." Perfect Comment on the first scene we saw in Greed Island!

    • At 10:02: "Welcome to Hating Ging Freecks Every Week" by TotallyNotMark:

"Welcome Gon. This is the game I made with my friends. Go ahead and enjoy. If you thought there'd be any clue to help you find me... Too bad. I just wanted to show off our game. Now you're stuck in this game until you find the item that lets you out. Enjoy the game." --- Best Worst Dad Ging.

    ...and Gon told killua:

"Yeah, Ging told me to enjoy the game." --- Best Broken Son: Gon.

    • TotallyNotMark thinks that if that's the only thing Gon thought was worth repeating from his father's words, it says a lot about his character. That's brutal...
    • Also, notice he always says Ging and never "father."

    First Town's "Bomber"

    • After starting the game, Gon and Killua are introduced to the Meta-game and the other characters playing Greed Island:
      • Since the objective is to collect all the limited cards in the game...
      • Some players strategy is to kill other players to free up cards.
      • Others work to pile up cards so other players won't have the opportunity to get them.
      • I never thought of it in the way TotallyNotMark explained it, but it seems the game was designed this way on purpose in-universe.

    02a.png

    • TotallyNotMark views the character Gon completely differently than the way I view him. While I agree that Gon is only angry about people not enjoying the game, I don't think he does that because of denial this time. In my view: He genuinely thinks that they play the game wrong, and would've said that even if his father wasn't involved in making it.

THE GAME! Believe me or not, I had an idea for a game that worked like Greed Island years before watching that specific arc in the anime. (But it was already in the manga by the time I came with my own version.) GREED ISLAND is my favorite setting in Hunter x Hunter world!

    • ...I'm totally against TotallyNotMark on the game aspect. (See the rant at 14:01-16:10,) My favorite thing about this arc is that Togashi goes out of his way, (and the story way too,) to teach us how the game works. Not necessarily good for storytelling, but it's amazingly original.

      • I wish there was more artwork for the cards though... That might've made reading it for its own fun enjoyable.
    • "This game isn't Virtual Reality. It's taking place in the real world." Wham Line!

    ENTER Biskey

    • I agree with everything said about Bisky. Watch the parts between 18:03 - 19:21! It's exactly how would I describe her character and impact on the story.

    04a.png

    • Biscuit tells the kids to fight the guy she just beat & he dies if he loses against them. "Gon shows no Malice for the guy despite what Bisky said about him." CONGRATS!! YOU GOT ANOTHER PIECE OF GON's MORALITY PUZZLE!

    • The Training Arc is my favorite part of Greed Island. (I say that about everything here, right? This is my favorite to re-watch then.)

    • TotallyNotMark states that "Whenever you feeling you get too much exposition, it's always an indication of something awesome being around the corner." To be honest, that's an observation I never made myself and I can't stop thinking of examples from my recent memory right.

    • "Greed Island, if played in the correct order, naturally makes the player stronger." Bisky thinks that Ging made this game to make Gon stronger. Well, that's probably true...

    05a.png

    • I love how Togashi introduces many plots then ends some of them in the swiftest way possible. As explained in the video at 22:00... This author gets bored really fast and I love that!

    • "This game isn't a virtual reality. It's set in the real world." That twist is TotallyNotMark's favorite, and it's mine too. This was spoiled on me before watching the arc, but I was mind-blown by how casually it was revealed.

    • TotallyNotMark's comments on Razor 23:42 "He also seems to know Ging, so this arc wasn't a waste of time after all." We'll come back to this later.

    • Killua gets his license deservedly briefly~ "It took me longer to get here, than it took to get the license."

    • "Chrollo Lucifer." That's another wham line. Also what Mark says at 26:26 that Chrollo is surely(?) drawn with different materials, is something I can't unsee, and now I notice & waster time to appreciate Chrollo's art while I'm looking for images for this post and probably every post from now on... Nice!!

    • TotallyNotMark didn't mention it here, but Kurapika's phone call with Gon and the rest is one of my favorite parts of Greed Island. Neon can't tell the future anymore, and Nostrade family is done. What will Kurapika do?

    • Now Hisoka joins the game, and I want to know.

    • I don't have a lot to comment on TotallyNotMark's outro except that I'm so excited for what he has to see in the second portion.

    That's all for today's article!

I loved TotallyNotMark's introduction to this part of the story that I really enjoyed, and I had fun listening to him even on the parts I disagreed a lot with. Now I have a reader who enjoys this series of articles (which is @diablomask,) I'm excited more for TotallyNotMark's opinion on the second half of Greed Island.

The second half of Greed Island is slower, but it offers a deeper look on the main character's minds. The payoff of their training will be shown in a more direct way. Also, Razor is best Game Master!

I take too long in each of those articles so I hope not to take as long in the remaining reviews.

  15. [Hunter x Hunter] My Bias Regarding Greed Island Arc@ahmadmanga1763d

From the moment Gon walked into the game's world the first time, it was inevitable that Greed Island would become one of my favorite arcs in Hunter x Hunter. The imagination & potential of the setting for me is brilliant enough to cover for any weakness!

    hunter-x-hunter-story-arcs.jpg

As a teenager I was fantasizing about creating game worlds. I dreamed about creating my own video games. I had many sketches and idea notes for games I was dreaming of making. Most of them were bad ideas with vague sketches I named designs, but I look back to them fondly.

One such idea was: "A game where you collect cards and use them, monsters in the world turn into cards too when defeated, to get stronger you have to get powerful cards." Sounds familiar?

It's the premise of many deck building games, but that genre didn't exist when I was young. I was inspired by Digimon of all franchises. The cards aspect came from me wishing Digimon Tamers did more with them. A main part of the game I dreamed of creating is being a virtual reality or (having the main character go in a virtual reality) which was inspired by the PS1 title Digimon World 3.

I didn't do much of a design for this idea. My teenage self correctly assumed it was too ambitious. A Virtual Reality was an impossible dream for me living in a third world country before 2007. As my teenage brain thought I created something new. I would only know a decade later how much my idea looks like a cheap rip-off of Hunter x Hunter's Greed Island! The arc was already done in the manga by then.

GREED ISLAND, a game played by Hunters in the world of Hunter X Hunter Manga and Anime. In-universe, the game is very rare and expensive. Only a certain group of specialists can play it, since it requires activating Nen, (this world's power system.)

The game plays like an MMORPG in which players compete over a limited quantity of cards.

As a game, Greed Island ends when a player completes their book of cards. The first player who does so will be the only winner. That player is allowed to take three of the game's cards outside to use them in the real world. Considering the number of powerful cards in the game. The system indirectly encourages player to use any means necessary to win.

A game that thrives on players Greed, hence the name.

It's revealed in the story that Greed Island isn't set in an alternate reality. It's in fact a real island in the real world (of the story.) The game's console acts as a teleporter to that certain place. It's also revealed that the game is maintained by the Nen powers of the Game Masters who created all the cards and monsters, and their Nen manages the game's system.

All of the above world building is something I enjoy even it wasn't part of a bigger whole. The fact that this game exists in a world I always find fascinating, (Hunter x Hunter world,) and being a seamless fit to such a world still blows my mind until now.

Add to that the fact that Greed Island itself is a better version than a world I used to imagine in my younger years, it's no wonder I enjoy the arc more than most fans. (Chimera Ants is my favorite arc because its later parts are just amazing. Greed Island is a close second for me.)

    What do you think?

I haven't even touched on the story in this article, I like the story of Greed Island arc a lot, but the highlight for me is the setting. I admit I'm a bit biased though. I wrote this article to be a companion to the next part of my reviews of TotallyNotMark HxH Reviews, so I hope you're looking forward to that one as well.

    personajes.jpg

We already talked about who created it, who produced it and how many chapters it has, let's move on to something that is really interesting such as the characters. Something that should be mentioned is that throughout the different arcs of the series many characters are introduced and many of these do not have a considerable permanence to mention them all, so I will only talk about those that are most important. Gon Freecss: He is our main character and like many other main fighting anime characters he is innocent, goofy and childish. The main difference with the other characters is that this one presents a palpable maturity throughout the series, he becomes aware of the different dangers involved in becoming a hunter and following the same path as his father. He learns the hard way that the world is not what is expected, that recklessness has consequences, and that people can have complicated pasts. He has a beautiful friendship with Killua Zoldyck and they both grow up on each other.

Killua Zoldyck: He is the co-star of the series and Gon's best friend, it can be said that this is his counterpart because he has had a hard life growing up in a family of famous murderers, he is faced with the pressure of his surname , similar to Gon sometimes has a carefree and childish attitude but his killer instinct, calculating mentality and maturity in facing difficult situations are quickly demonstrated, he also demonstrates a noteworthy evolution by becoming more humble, respectful and having to face ideologies relatives who no longer consider that they are consistent with him.

    por_que_la_asociacion_hunter_x_hunter_es_realmente_una.jpg Fuente/Source

Hisoka: He is undoubtedly my favorite character in the series, his main characteristic is always to be in search of strong opponents, at some points he is able to forgive his opponents if he sees the potential to become stronger, he lives in favor of making what you want, when you want and how you want doing everything in your own interests. He is selfish, liar and obsessive, he shows from the first moment a combat ability and incredible abilities that provoke in him a lot of confidence coupled with the fact that he is highly analytical and intelligent being always ahead of his opponents, his behavior is usually erratic and strange. He has been an antagonist, a villain, a secondary villain and has even collaborated with the protagonists.

    maxresdefault.jpg Fuente/Source

Kurapika: He is another co-star who appears in some arcs of the anime, he has a disturbing past for which he seeks revenge, one of his main characteristics is the fact of having bright scarlet eyes. He has a sensible, intelligent, analytical and critical thinking personality, at first he appeared introverted and isolated due to his murky past. Throughout the story he becomes reckless and irrational adopting self-destructive behavior to achieve his goals, needing his friends to regain his composure.

Leorio Paradinight: He is the last coprotagosnist, he seeks to become a doctor in order to help the poor and for this he needs to become a hunter and get money, he is highly sensitive to the fact that his dreams and ambitions are not taken seriously or he lacks the I respect. He has very high esteem for his friends being that he does not mind putting his integrity and his dreams at risk to help a friend, on many occasions he becomes hasty and impulsive causing difficulties for him and his friends.

Alright, we already met the main characters of the anime so we can talk a little about the story, it should be noted that it is not very complex and can even be considered bland and lacking in weight, being a totally correct vision. Everything revolves around Gon and his friends following in the footsteps of his father and various adventures that arise throughout the plot, Killua being the only one who accompanies him in all the arcs. What really makes this anime one of the best fighting anime is the fact that strategy is essential during matches, leaving aside the typical formula that brute force is the only thing necessary to win.

    693033ead45817b85e47b831007d6e20.png Fuente/Source

Mention the strategy in the fighting because this is the main attraction of the series, it is characterized by not having a really interesting or deep story, almost in every rule it follows the mold to be a generic fight series, going from a villain to another being the next stronger than the previous one. The use of the word 'almost' is due to the fact that it has only 1 element that makes it stand out completely and that is that the characters are often not stronger than the enemy on duty, most of the time they are not not half as strong as the villain in question, forcing the characters to use strategy and the creative use of their techniques. This small detail makes the series simply memorable, in turn the above goes hand in hand with the evolution that the characters present and how all events affect them, make them doubt and even rethink their convictions.

Hunter x hunter is an excellent fighting, action and adventure anime, with very charismatic characters and a very smooth and simple story that allows anyone to like it, so I highly recommend it if you are looking to watch a series with great battles in which there is real uncertainty about who will have the skill, intelligence and technique to win.

  17. Thoughts on TotallyNotMark's Analysis of Hunter x Hunter #4: York New City (pt.2)@ahmadmanga1820d

Something I noticed from watching the first four reviews is that this series totally suits TotallyNotMark's analysis style. The story is all about characters and they're complex and never feel off. They're also unpredictable but every action of theirs makes sense to their character. That's perfect to analyze from both the narrative and the psychological perspective.

1:33: The story didn't go or conclude as TotallyNotMark expected. The action is sparse compared to other Shonen series.

    • Welcome to the real Hunter x Hunter!

Writing a character driven story at such scale without destroying the pacing is difficult. (I know because I write this way too.) Togashi is clearly a Pantser type of writer. Writing a story with this style makes unpredictable stories. The author himself doesn't know where it'll go.

    • 1:50 Fantabulistic seems like an actual word to me.

    ch093_004.jpg

    • 2:30 The Phantom Troupe is arguably the most popular group of anime villains by fans. They have human personalities, goals and flaws. Fun to watch, but still undeniably evil.

    • Togashi story frames the Phantom Troupe side of the story so fairly, that they're almost the protagonists of this arc. (Kurapika would be the antagonist.) ...Think about it.

TotallyNotMark mentioned that despite receiving most of the focus and dialogue, the Phantom Troupe leader Chrollo is still enigma to him. I believe this is the case by design!

    • Like TotallyNotMark pointed out at 3:35: The scene in which Gon and Killua got captured and questioned flows perfectly. There's a moment in it when Gon arm-wrestled Nobunaga, that became more meaningful to me every time I rewatch the scene. Especially after finishing the series.

    Chrollo Lucifer

5:02: "My friends call me Boss!"

    • No wonder Chrollo is one of the most popular characters in Hunter x Hunter. Despite being a murderer who leads a group of plunderers, he's so calm charismatic and loves his people, but he has no remorse for anything besides them.

    ch099_003.jpg

    • The symphony scene is terrifying but awesome. As TotallyNotMsrk said, the focus on Chrollo's hand gestures while he orchestrate s the massacre tells so much about how The Phantom Troupe views their missions.

If you're reading this and only watched the anime. Around this point in the manga. There's a cover-page that shows the rules for Chrollo's Skill Hunter ability. I'm sure TotallyNotMark read them. The rules were not said in the anime as far as I know.

    • The Zoldycs vs Chrollo fight is impressive. Not only because of the powers in it but because none of the parties involved took the fight personally.

    • The Zoldycks value life. (I applaud TotallyNotMark for noticing and mentioning this.) This information about them add another layer to the complexity of their family. To them, killing is only a job.

    • My impression is that some of the Zoldycks view their profession as necessary evil. Zeno and Silva who were hired in this fight are the most reasonable Zoldycks in the story... Killua doesn't want to be like his father, I won't be surprised if Killua grew up to be like his grandfather whose morality seems at a level between them.

    ch098_013.jpg

    • It's interesting choice to show that page of the manga at 9:26. The sketchy drawings have a way to convey speed. (One Piece does it sometimes too.)

    • The ending of the battle is unusual, unexpected and perfect for all the characters involved. Since no character viewed the battle personally, as soon as the reason for the fight ended.

    • Both fighters went like: "We're cool? We're cool!" and went on their way.

    • The ones who hired the Zoldycks died and no one is left to pay them. Why they died? Chrollo anticipated this fight so he hired their son to kill their employers beforehand!

There's a saying in anime: "You know a person better after exchanging fists with him." I don't know how true is that, but this fight between Chrollo and the Zoldycks almost proves it.

We learn so much about Chrollo's mindsets, but most importantly about the Zoldyck family. This attitude of theirs is probably why Killia hated them so much.

12:25-14:10 TotallyNotMark speaks about the stark difference in how each version of anime captures the emotions of a scene.

    • I prefer the 2011 version over all, but I have to agree that it fails more than once at capturing the dark tones of some scenes. *Kurapika being upset about his inability to avenge his people.

    • Looking at 1999's adaptation You will feel his burden as he fights the urge to kill someone. This wasn't conveyed as hard in the 2011 as compared to the older anime adaptation. Of course, you'll have to use your imagination in manga which probably makes the scene as gruesome as you can imagine.

15:05 TotallyNotMark is thinking that Meteor City mention is a set-up for some future arc.

    • It could be, but don't bother thinking about what Togashi is setting up with Hunter x Hunter. As the NewWorldReview says in one of his videos. Hunter x Hunter doesn't do any traditional Set Up, Pay Off writing style.

    • I never thought of "The Spider loses half of it's members" as half of them leaving. Probably because no character mentions it. The justification mentioned by TotallyNotMark at 15:56 makes perfect sense

    ch100_019.jpg

    • Kurapika's Negativity accumulates until he meets with his friends. The animators put a lot of budget for that smile scene. #NoOneMinds

    • Character consistency is the biggest strength in Hunter x Hunter. All great Manga have this to some extent, but the depth of HxH characters are impressive for a Shonen series.

    • The scene of the Phantom Troupe fortune telling is my favorite of this arc. I agree with TotallyNotMark's criticism on the exposition of Hisoka's actions in that scene. It's something Togashi seems to love doing more and more in later arcs. It's dividing the fandom.

TotallyNotMark correctly figures out that one of the downsides of the Nen system's complexity, is that the author will need to "tell" instead of "showing" us the more complicated ones. The manga might get wordy.

    • Nen system is hard to explain. Wait until you catch up with the current Manga arc. Togashi spent a full chapter explaining one character ability.

    • Killua is an Assassin. Despite hating it and trying to become a Hunter, his habits aren't easily broken. Nice job noticing all the in nods to that, TotallyNotMatk. What you said at 21:20 about how Killua line to Gon mirrors his father's actions and grandfather's earlier. It's so deep.

    • Watch the Leorio entrance scene in the video! 22:40 The Editor must be a troll, but it's so funny~

    • After Kurapika kidnaps Chrollo. The next few scenes are full of anticipation and awesomeness. The contrast between Chrollo's calmness and Kurapika's hidden agitation shows how much inexperienced Kurapika is... As for Chrollo. He really doesn't care if he died.

    ch118_015.jpg

TotallyNotMark talks about the why he always reads manga first. The anime can take some of the intention of the manga away with some scenes. Anime almost always does this with the example about Dragon Ball Z he offers between 26:15-27:00 illustrates this problem trait perfectly.

    • "Taking what makes the Manga scene so good and elevate it with the strength of this type of media." True, that's what all anime should aim for, but I understand when they don't... They already work on a limited budget, and some of these improvement can take a lot of time and effort.

    • The animators also don't have the luxury of trail and error, which makes it extra awesome when they make a scene like that.

    That's all for today's article!

So, that was my impression on TotallyNotMark's fourth HxH video & the last one where he covers the 1999 adaptation I guess? (I wonder why he didn't talk about the OVA at the end.)

Next is the Greed Island arc. I hope I don't take too long writing it this time~

  19. Thoughts on TotallyNotMark's Analysis of Hunter x Hunter #3: York New City (pt.1)@ahmadmanga1856d

TotallyNotMark started reviewing Hunter x Hunter arcs around two months ago following the success of his One Piece & Jojo videos. He's reviewing every arc in the series after reading it without the context of the following arcs. This newbie perspective analysis is entertaining and informative to watch.

    maxresdefault.jpg

He picks up many more nuances than I do. He makes a wrong takes sometimes but it's excusable because it's a blind-review. As someone who watched Hunter x Hunter multiple times, I still find new things to learn from him.

    The Review Video:

In this part 3, TotallyNotMark reads and reviews the first half of York New City following the ending of the Heavens Arena arc. While covering the two parallel stories of the York New Arc, this video ends on a cliffhanger and I was disappointed, but not for long as I watched part.2 soon after.

    Thoughts & Impressions:

    • TotallyNotMark describes the structure of this arc which follows different characters. Togashi is a master of multiple POVs. I have to agree that it the strength it does to a series is amazing! Extra points for using DBZ Namek Saga as the example.

    • The unpredictable nature of Togashi stories and his complete focus on originality, competes with Oda's attention to detail.

    • "Gon's negative traits are his most relatable ones." I totally agree. I love how they're executed it, so much it hurts.

    • Gon has a lot of Shonen heroes positive traits, like pureness, challenge-mindset, loyalty. The thing is, they're in a human child now, and children can get disillusioned. It shows you why Luffy and Goku don't have Gon's relatable qualities: They don't make a heroic person!

From HxH story I can say for certain that Togashi is the type that gets bored quickly. (I'm like that myself.) He doesn't stick with one scene or emotion for too long. He's closer to Toriyama than Oda in style. Togashi almost never plans ahead.

    • Wow! Around 05:00: The scene when Gon & Killua talk about their future plans and Gon wants Killua to be with him forever. I TotallyDontRemember this piece of foreshadowing!

    • [^] I don't think TotallyNotMark watches his videos, because the footage in that segment!!

    hxh65_015.jpg

    • 05:54: The box opening scene is an amazing scene. It shows how forward thinker Ging must be. The importance of Nen to Hunters. It also showcases Ging power as no one could open the box with force.

    • I relate to the "I don't want you to find me" scene so much! I can imagine how Ging probably feels, and I know exactly how Gon feels when he hears it. Like TotallyNotMark, I think this comes from Togashi's personal life or experience. This also reinforced by a video I watched about his older series YuYuHakushou.

    • Gon doesn't want to connect to his father. Yup! That's a subtext I noticed too. He doesn't refer to his father in a longing manner at all, opting to use the distant Oyaji over Tou-san in the original Japanese. He even refers to him by name. Love that TotallyNotMark noticed it too!

    • Kurapika plays "Among Us" so he can get hired by Mafia. #ThanksForTheMeme

    hxh68_003.jpg

    • 12:05: ...You're too used to One Piece, Mark.

    • Hunter x Hunter doesn't explore new locations as we go to them. When it does, you won't notice it. I don't think it's a flaw of the series, though.

    • Greed Island introduction is really interesting. Think about it: Ging made a Limited-Edition game, that needs Nen users to work, just so his son could play it 10+ years later. #MessedUpActOfLove #BestWorstParentEver

    • I didn't think about the surprise Sep 1st event that much so I can't comment on it. But I agree that surprises work well when they re-contextualize the scenes.

    • Understanding how Nen in general works is essential to understand Kurapika's abilities. His Chains Hatsu has many rules. His application of Nen is almost the opposite of what Nen is supposed to do. (I have more to say here so I hope to go back to this after TotallyNotMark catches up with the Manga.)

    hxh84_008.jpg

    • Kurapika vs Uvogin is awesome! One of the best fights in anime/manga especially emotionally.

I always think that Hunter x Hunter message is the opposite of Naruto's in this regard. Revenge in Hunter x Hunter is shown realistically and neutrally. It doesn't tell you that Revenge is bad and unnecessary, but a necessary evil. Compare to Naruto in which the story frames it as something villainous.

    • I think both anime versions of the fight work well. Though I agree that somber soundtrack fits the fight more. I think 2011 choose the hype route by design as they deemed the fight too dark if they did that... At this point of its run, 2011 version was being aired at for younger audience TV time slot.

    • 22:20: Hustle x Hustle! This part in which Gon, Killua & Leorio try many ways to make money! I love it! ...The Manga is teaching us entrepreneurship guys!

    hxh72_017.jpg

    • That scene when the appraiser talks with them and analysis Gon character might be the most important scenes for me in this story. He sums up that Gon has no morality system. (Or at least, his morality system is very bizarre.)

    • 24:40: ...Another foreshadowing piece I missed in my first watch.

    • The Video finishes on a cliffhanger that left me going: "What?! WHY?!" This stalking scene is amazing because it uses Gon & Killua strengths, (stealth) and puts them against stronger enemies they have no hope to defeat. Then they get found out.

    That's all for today's article!

I already wrote most of the next Review thoughts. I was planning on publishing them together, but it was too long. I decided to split the article in half.

Editing this part alone took more than a week. (Well, collectively less than 5 hours.)

  20. Thoughts on TotallyNotMark's Analysis of Hunter x Hunter #2: Zoldyck Family & Heavens Arena@ahmadmanga1877d

TotallyNotMark started reviewing Hunter x Hunter arcs around a month ago. I was waiting until he picks up Hunter x Hunter since I saw his One Piece videos. TotallyNotMark picks up many times the nuances I do, in his first read-through of each series.

    hxh02maxresdefault.jpg

I already posted my impressions on his first arc review. Overall, I compared my impressions with his. Explained why I agree with his decision to experience the story through the Manga first, even though I think the anime is better.

I'm astonished at the things TotallyNotMark noticed so early in the series. This is why I'm excited to follow the series with him: Arc by arc.

I'm writing these articles with as few spoilers as possible.

    The Review

In his second Video, TotallyNotMark reviews two arcs: Zoldyck Family & Heavens Arena. The former deals with the aftermath of the Hunter Exam and the friendship between the four main characters. The latter is where the series really begins with the introduction of Nen and wrapping up the rest of the loose ends left by the Hunter Exam arc.

This article is written using notes I wrote while watching the video above. so I decided to keep the Bullet Points format from the first part.

    My Impressions

    • So the review opens with a simple correction: TotallyNotMark used to pronounce the name Gon wrong in the first video. I didn't mind but the fandom reaction is #Hilarious!!
    • I love that TotallyNotMark noticed how Gon doesn't care (or even mention) that Killua killed someone. I like that about Gon's character, but I think TotallyNotMark misunderstood Gon's psyche here. I believe he will need another arc to understand him better.
    • I don't agree that Gon doesn't see value in himself, at least that's not what abandonment did to him. #IMO
    • I totally agree that Killua is overwhelmed by his parents' expectations. It's a nice contrast with Gon. I never thought it before, but both deal with their "similar problem/opposite spectrum" differently.

    Zoldyc Family Arc:

    • 5:22 TotallyNotMark brings an interesting point I never noticed before. The difference in the dialogue between Kurapika, Leorio, and Gon. It shows what they value the most in their problem-solving approach.

"Everything a character says reveals something about them." It's a storytelling technique hard to do right. All my favorite writers do this well and I hope to reach this level one day.

    • 6:30 Hunter x Hunter is a deconstruction of Shonen which makes it a realistic version of that genre by default. HxH characters are always put in traditional Shonen situations, but they react more realistically for who they are compared to a typical Shonen manga.

    • [^] That's what makes Hunter x Hunter unique. In this regard it plays Dragon Ball's formula in the opposite way of how ONE PIECE is playing it.

    • Nothing to comment more on this arc other than I agree with what TotallyNotMark says about the challenges (fighting Canary & the coin challenge.) I agree with him about the arc's ending too.

    yorkshin009.jpg

    Heavens Arena:

    • Gon & Killua go to Heavens Arena to train & collect money while doing it. This is a unique take on the Tournament Arc trope. When first watched this, I was excited to see where does it go.
    • TotallyNotMark never mentions how Gon & Killua never cared about reaching the top throughout this arc. They're too apathetic about this adventure compared to most shonen heroes.
    • I'm pretty sure that Gon's first fight in Heavens Arena is a direct reference to Dragon Ball's Goku's fight in his first Tournament.

    gonactslikegokuforoncech44_019.jpg

    • 14:36 This TotallyNotMark story with the name "Wing" is so funny it's painful!!

    The introduction of Nen!

Nen is my favorite singular power system in a Shonen Manga. Probably the best system in terms of the creativity of rules chemistry out of any Power System I saw in a story.

While I like ONE PIECE & A Certain Magical Index Power Systems as much or more. It's different for Hunter x Hunter.

One Piece uses three power systems (Haki, Devil Fruits & character/race specific systems) and Index uses two (Science and Magic.) In both cases, I love the co-existence of such systems more than the systems/powers themselves.

The Nen system is detailed, personality driven, non-power-level-based, and works on equivalent exchange. It's creative but limits the power creep enough to be my top favorite with little competition.

    • Nen's introduction explains a lot of what happened in earlier scenes in the story...
    • Killua never heard about Nen. This is kinda a plot hole but whether it was intentional by Togashi or not, there are multiple explanations for why Killua's family didn't teach him Nen.
    • Can't speak about these reasons until TotallyNotMark reaches a specific arc in the story.

    gonshatsu_ch60_15.jpg

    • 20:21 TotallyNotMark is Totally-Not-Wrong in his claim that Nen's complicated rules made it harder for it to be as popular as Dragon Ball's Ki or the Devil Fruits/Haki of One Piece.
    • 22:20 Oh, that's why I don't remember a lot of 1999's Katsuro vs Hisoka fight. I only watched the Arabic dub of that adaptation. I thought they changed it up.
    • Yes! Elevator x Lady was a great filler!

    Gon vs Hisoka:

    • I didn't notice that ref thing. After TotallyNotMark pointed it out in the video. It's true: The judge seems like he hates Gon in the anime ver. I think it's a weird but funny adaptation plot-hole.
    • The reveal that Hisoka is one of the spiders was one of the greatest Shonen reveals at the time! That casually connects him to Kurapika's story and gives us readers a big hope that we'll meet him in the next arc. Who wouldn't?
    • The commentary girl likes what she does, doesn't she?
    • The Three versions of this fight are amazing. I was excited to know that TotallyNotMark is impressed more with the 1999 version. My favorite is the 2011's ver.

    gonvshisoka_ch61_07.jpg

As an introduction of this world's Power System. The Heavens Arena arc was done amazingly well. Its fun parts were essential before the darkness of York New Arc, which TotallyNotMark has already finished the review for. I'm going to watch that after publishing this article.

  21. Thoughts on TotallyNotMark's Analysis of: Hunter x Hunter's Exam Arc@ahmadmanga1893d

I was waiting for TotallyNotMark to Review Hunter X Hunter story since he finished reading One Piece! Now a dream came true, and we got to see a fresh analysis on HxH manga from a new fan perspective!

    maxresdefault.jpg

    Who's TotallyNotMark

TotallyNotMark is a YouTuber I've come to respect. He used to publish video content about Dragon Ball, but since last year he started expanding to other series. TotallyNotMark spent 6 months reading & reviewing One Piece manga each week.

His videos are not only fun and nostalgic for a reader like me, they are very informative too. (He's the reason I know so much about Jo-Ha-Kyu story structure.)

    The Review!

This video above is TotallyNotMark's Review. He's only responsible for the script and narration in the video above. The visual part is made by his editor. TotallyNotMark decided to read the Manga and he only watches the parts of the anime that his close friends suggest to him after reaching that part in the manga.

    Reviewing Hunter x Hunter Manga

I completely agree with TotallyNotMark choosing to review Manga over anime. Don't get me wrong, I think the anime of Hunter X Hunter is a better experience than Manga, and I mean both versions (1999 and 2011.) But as he said, it's better to read the story as the author intended. Anime is not more than adaptation of the original story.

The story's strengths and flaws can be found easier in Manga format than anime. Voice and Music are great for immersion but they're just another layer of noise if you want to analyze the story.

Finally, I find Gon introduction better in the Manga than both the anime versions. I watched this video that explains how. years ago. (beware from late-arcs spoilers.) As he noticed in the Third Exam Sequence, Gon is smarter in the Manga than both anime versions.

    Some Thoughts About The Review:

    • There's no need to worry about Hunter x Hunter Hiatuses at this point. There's a point in the manga that's meant as an ending. Only worry after catching up.
    • Surprisingly, TotallyNotMark never talked about the reputation of the Manga's art. It's inconsistent in quality...

    hunterxhunter020_015.jpg

    • I love the foreshadowing pieces TotallyNotMark tried to figure out from the story. Including Gon's potential and his inability to succeed alone.
    • The way TotallyNotMark reviewed some scenes is amazing and mentioned things I never noticed even in my third watch-through of the anime, (I never completely read the manga.)
    • "Getting the Hunter License" for all important characters, is a mean to an end, not the end goal itself. That's a nice thing to mention, one of the series strength is how character's goals are realistic.
    • "Pride is not a good thing." Watch 25:00 to 27:30. This part of the video is AMAZING! After hearing this I realized that Gon never notices his pride. When he's asked why he does things, he never mentions his pride. Despite that, Gon's pride is his most dangerous motivator & character flaw.

    hunterxhunter020_007.jpg

    • It was very enjoyable to see TotallyNotMark's take on Gon & Killua's thematic connection this early. Their narrative connection is something I only noticed by the third arc in the series!
    • "Gon being a tragic protagonist." I only noticed that in retrospect after finishing most of the anime. Gon being a Failure Hero is something reinforced since the beginning of the series. Most of us don't notice it, because many of Gon failures early on, feel like success. Gon always improves in his fights.

Excited to See Where This Goes Next!

The Second Review: For the 2nd & 3rd Arcs is already published by TotallyNotMark, but since I wanted to complete this article first, I didn't watch it yet. The next Review will cover the section in which Hunter x Hunter world rules get explained. My favorite Power System in an anime: The Nen System!

  22. My first impression of the 2011 adaptation of Hunter X Hunter (review)@stairway2heaven1933d

Hello Hivers, I hope you are well, a few months ago I had the opportunity to see the anime of which I will speak below thanks to the insistence of a friend of mine, and I could not be more grateful to him to be able to finish it, I hope you like it without further ado, let's start.

    Synopsis / Sinopsis

The story begins with Gon, a boy whose father abandoned him to continue his life as a hunter, a member of humanity's elite. The thing is that Gon doesn't hate him for it, on the contrary, he thinks that the life of a hunter should be good enough to decide to abandon your own son to fulfill that task.

The main premise of the story is that Gon will do the impossible to find his father (Ging), that's why at 12 years old the first thing he will try to do is to become a professional hunter like his father. In this part is where the "Hunter's Examination" arc begins and also where he will meet his first two companions, Leorio and Kurapika. Later in the same arc he will meet Killua, a boy who was dedicated to murder, the latter will become one of the main protagonists along with Gon as well as his closest friend.

    Characters / Personajes

Gon Freecss: He is a twelve year old boy who wants to become a hunter to find his father, the legendary hunter Ging Freecss. Having spent a lot of time in the forest when he was younger, he is very good at dealing with animals. Also possessing extraordinary senses of smell and sight, he is not very good at school assignments but makes up for it with an innate ability for adventure or combat.

Killua Zoldyck: He is a twelve year old boy and best friend of the protagonist, Gon Freecss. The high potential son of a famous family of assassins, he runs away from home to live life on his own terms. He is just as talented as Gon, but with more cunning and intelligence, maturity of real combat and assassinations. He is the most stable of the group.

Kurapika: He is the last survivor of the massacre of his clan, the Kurta clan by the infamous band of thieves the "Genei Ryodan" or Ghost Brigade. Kurapika has talent a little more than the average Hunter, he is the smartest of the group of 4, and Leorio's closest friend. Although at the beginning of the series he is cheerful and conservative, in his formation this character is the one who changes his mind the most due to his motive of revenge towards the assassins of his clan.

Leorio Paladiknight: The most naive and charismatic of the group, Leorio is a cunning character, he joins the hunter test in order to collect money, where he ends up crossing paths with Gon and Kurapika in the first chapter. He has a slow training in terms of combat potential, but he is undoubtedly the most helpful in the group.

Personal opinion and conclusion / Opinión personal y conclusión

Being a genre like shonen (comics for kids) at first instance his impression for me was not the most receptive because it made me think it was very childish either by the environment or Gon as a character in the beginning and I could not be more wrong because as it progressed the series as a whole changed considerably and showed a little more raw and serious nuances. The story as such does not have a great theme in fact it is quite simplistic but that does not mean that it is something bad in fact on the contrary I think you can take advantage of the characters and the multiple environments that present as the development or progress of the plot.

With respect to the people, I can only say that appearances are deceiving and that each one contributes in one way or another an incredible growth either individually or as a group according to the situations to which they are exposed, there are some that grow more than others and others that although at first instance do not show so much relevance in the long run the opposite happens, One of the things I can say about this series is that from my experience and point of view there is no such thing as a villain or absolute evil, only individuals with interests and needs in between that is the interpretation with which I could reach at the end of this incredible anime to which I strongly invite you to give it a chance and have your own conclusions at the end of it.

  24. Killua and Gon from Hunter X Hunter@sketchades2126d

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting in this community, I'm Hades and I draw. Since I make a lot of anime fan art I decided to join and show you shomething. Here's a drawing of Killua and Gon from Hunter X Hunter:

I actually made this a few months ago when everyone was partecipating in Killugon week on Twitter, and I thought it would be cool to give Gon a pair of roller skates since Killua always has his skateboard! I really love these two, they're the best children ever.

I used Paint Tool SAI to make this.

    Here's some process pictures:
