Watched (and read some of) In Another World With My Smartphone!

    Such a feel-good #isekai~ Low stakes, cute #harem & nice world-building.

Touya's portrayal is too generic though. His inner conflicts (missing in the #anime,) are his only exciting trait in the #lightnovel~

  2. Anime Review: In Another World With My Smartphone@maverickinvictus2876d

There is a certain allure of being transported to another world. So different but familiar. Isekai wa Sumātofon to Tomo ni (In Another World With My Smartphone) is the latest anime that I am currently watching. I picked this because it was a light novel adaptation and that it had comedy undertones. There will be some minor spoilers and a lot of my opinion in this post.

The premise of the show is Touya Mochizuki was accidentally killed by God. He could not be resurrected in his original world but was given a choice to be resurrected in another world and to bring with him a special item. I found this very similar to another show that I recently watched and very much enjoyed Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! (KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!)

He chooses to bring his smartphone to this new fantasy land that he was being resurrected with the ability to charge it with magic and to function. So that eliminates one of the problems I thought of how will it be powered and used in such a world.

Not only was he able to bring in a special item but his abilities were boosted as the way of an apology by God to him.

So off he gets reborn into that new world, the same age as he died which was about 15 or 16 years old. He has nothing save the clothes he is wearing and his smartphone with him.

It now goes through the traditional trope of sent to a fantasy world kind of anime that I have seen in multiple shows. The protagonist starts his hero journey, meets his initial teammates, goes out and adventure with them, have some funny moments, bond together, meets new people and journeys to different places while battling seemingly more powerful creatures and developing new skills.

It is a safe formula and has worked in so many animes and yet with this show by the 3rd episode I was seriously questioning why I was watching it.

Everything wrong with In Another World With My Smartphone

I don't really do anime reviews. I watch animes in order to watch them and enjoy it. Yet watching this show just made me tick off all the things I did not like about it.

    The Protagonist

Touya Mochizuki is your typical protagonist in these kinds of anime. First showed off as being naive and experienced but kindhearted and always ready to help people. Having his abilities boosted by God made some sense because he was trying to apologize for the mistake of killing him.

Intelligence, learning ability, physical skills and most of all magic was boosted. He was given the attunement to be able to cast all types of magic and to instantly learn it as well regardless of difficult.

He has an insane amount of mana and just by reading its function or seeing it once he can cast any spells. He is able to do difficult feats of magics that were previously thought of as lost or impossible to do but he does it with ease.

I realized that he is an extremely overpowered character that no matter what is thrown his way he will be able to conquer it. This made him extremely boring to watch because you know that he will triumph.

Yet we have the manga/anime story of One Punch Man who is the epitome of overpoweredness but it is enjoyable to watch. Being overpowered is not by itself boring, it is how that trait of the protagonist is used to further the story. In the case of One Punch Man although we know that he would blast through his enemies but the show is able to make us feel that this next enemy might be the one that pushes him to be more serious.

Going to another primarily magic type protagonist, Ainz Ooal Gown of Overlord is another overpowered character who has magical items and artifacts as well as a very high mana and 5-8th tier magics but is has its funny moments and the battles that happen you feel that their is a threat level and that it might not be possible to the protagonist to win without any effort.

Touya, on the other hand, is one confronted with an enemy he uses boosted ability and its over even before you know what is happening.

There is just no threat level that you think that will put the protagonist in trouble and everything is literally handed to him. No effort, no obstacles he needs to overcome because all he needs to do is pull out his smartphone.

    Smartphone

This is my major pet peeve on this show. This is the Deux Ex Machina whenever there is something that needs to scale up, or find something or learn something all he needs to do is look at his phone and poof whatever he needs it is there.

Think of it if Google had magic powers and can do anything. Need to find a particular person, the phone can locate, need directions to a ruins, seems that it has a map and route finder, need to lock on to multiple targets, uses the phone to highlight and then cast his already overpowered magic.

I had to roll my eyes everytime he took his phone and did something incredible. Yet shouldn't we believe it is possible since it is set in a magical, fantasy world? Shouldn't we suspend our disbelief and just accept it? It depends on the reader or watcher, depending on the medium, but for me I just couldn't and it just made watching the show unbearable yet that is just my opinion because apparently there are twelve volumes to this series so some people enjoyed it.

    The girls of the show

Most of these "harem" or Ecchi animes revolve around the protagonist having several women or in this case girls because the lead is relatively young and so his partners are anywhere from 11 years old to about the same age as him except for one surprisingly old character.

The girls are treated as mere plot devices and although aesthetically they are different and have some minor quirks and abilities to try to differentiate them but to me it fails as at this point watching all 12 episodes all they are there for is for eye candy because of all the boob and panty shots that the show punishes you in an attempt to be funny.

Fan Service is something that I think that the anime/manga industry could do without but then the target market for that is young, pubescent boys who get off at looking at these scantily clad characters and living out their harem dreams of being adored by multiple women.

I had to finish the series just to get closure on this show. It was unwatchable for me, was everything wrong in anime for me and none of the characters were memorable. You might be thinking that I should lighten up, that the source material is from a light novel and most likely I am not the target demographic.

Yet there are other light novels that is better than this. One such show that made a mark was Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash it turned the lost in a fantasy world genre on its head and had some very deep psychological effects. The storyline and characters were memorable.

The way that the story unfolded, the characters given life and treatment, their thoughts voiced out and their emotions showed to the audience making them feel connected. This was such a surprise for me but remains as one of my favorites.

I would advise you to stay away from the anime, In Another World With My Smartphone. In my opinion there are other shows that are better and will not completely waste your time. Those were a few hours of my life that I would never get back.

If you want something similar but told better I highly recommend KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!.
