Films that are popular or, to be more precise, commercially successful, don’t have to be good. Sometimes they can even be extraordinarily bad. One of the most glaring examples of the phenomenon can be found in Indecent Proposal, 1993 romantic drama directed by Adrian Lyne.
The film is based on the novel by Jack Engelhard. Protagonists, played by Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore, are David Murphy and his wife Diana. They found itself in dire financial situation and might lose their home. In desperation, they travel to Las Vegas in hopes they can obtain necessary money by gambling in casinos. They lose money, but in the process they catch attention of billionaire Jack Gage (played by Robert Redford). He offers them what seems like simple way out of their trouble. Murphy will get 1 million US$, but in exchange Diana must spend the night with the billionaire. Murphys, and especially Diana, are now faced with terrible moral dilemma and must choose between remaining destitute or losing their dignity.
At first glance, Indecent Proposal is just another “high concept” film Hollywood used to and, to certain degree, continues to churn out every day. The “high concept” in question, however, managed to infuriate the feminists and that, in the age of emerging “political correctness” reflected on critics which turned very hostile on the picture. But, the audience nevertheless flocked to the theatres, lured by the big names on the poster. Robert Redford, the biggest and most important name on the poster, was probably the most responsible for film’s initial success, but his casting at the end of the day sabotaged the very “high concept” behind the film. The idea of someone having to pay a million dollars to have sex with beautiful woman doesn’t make sense if that someone is played by an actor who not that long ago used to be biggest Hollywood star, ultimate sex symbol and someone who could sell millions of pillows with his face on it so that many American women can brag that they had “slept with Robert Redford”. Woody Harrelson, despite being quarter of century younger than Redford, is simply not attractive enough to be much of the competition for still attractive 1970s star.
So, Indecent Proposal fails from the very start. Its “high concept” is further damaged by terrible script by Amy Holden Jones which resolves the main plot point at the middle, so the audience is forced to endure almost entire hour watching Murphys suffer from the consequences of Diana’s rather predictable choice. Situation isn’t helped with Adrian Lyne’s direction that makes the film’s overlong or bad acting, especially in the case of Demi Moore which lacks any chemistry with Harrelson. Music score by John Barry and attractive cinematography by Howard Atherton doesn’t help either and only reminds the audience how good this film could have been with more capable or more inspired hands aboard. Indecent Proposal looks even less bearable if a viewer starts seeing that the film could have been even more effective with only few minor changes – like billionaire being played by someone like Danny DeVito, David being object of proposal or, like in the original novel, David being a Jew and billionaire being rich Arab sheikh. But those opportunities were ignored and Indecent Proposal deservedly won Razzie for Worst Picture.

The million dollar question?
In television jargon, there are several approaches to the famous million dollar question, which has become a real landmark and has many versions. However, it is quite natural that all of us, at some point in our lives, ask ourselves this question. And the fact is that the famous figure represents a perfect amount for such comparisons in terms of importance. Therefore, it is common to take such a figure as a reference for something of remarkable value.
The truth is that this topic has a close relationship with a movie that I have seen again; a very famous and successful movie in the economic aspect and it is "An indecent proposal", which has a luxury cast, which based on the script and the subtlety with which they approach this delicate subject, make it a little more digestible. This film by British director Adrian Lyne, was released in 1993 and stars the beautiful Demi Moore (Diana), Mr. Robert Redford (John) and the then young Woody Harrelson (David).
Undoubtedly, this film arouses many curiosities in me, since it is a situation that is perfectly probable nowadays. There are very wealthy people who, when they are committed to some objective, are capable of anything to fulfill their whims. The detail that makes it somewhat uncomfortable to see the husband offended a posteriori, is that it is something forbidden; something that goes against the principles of union in a loving couple, that although they love each other, they are also going through an economic crisis that makes them doubt.

With the passing of the years, the details of the film are more noticeable, perhaps I did not sit down to watch a film to evaluate it, but rather to enjoy all that seductive and implausible situation. But it also helps me to appreciate the plus points, such as the music of its soundtrack and the fantastic way of wooing an old wolf like the great Robert Redford. Plus the opinion of Jeremy (Oliver Plat) who is David Murphy's friend and lawyer; and instead of being offended, he lets him know how lucky he is, for getting such an offer hahaha, How crazy!
I recognize that this film is not one of the best I have seen, but it is a plot that I find so controversial that it is still talked about. Especially today, with the superficiality with which much of the youth talks about sex and love. The proposal is actually indecent, but for the decent audience that sees the film hahaha, because although at first glance it is a subject to refuse; the director creates that circumstantial atmosphere, so that it looks something feasible and necessary. Especially in the dramatic dialogue between Diana and her "beloved" husband, where she tells him that it is something corporal, just sex, no feelings then.

That situation has another unfounded incentive; and it is the stamp and economic condition of the seducer; an elderly John Gage, who knows very well how to use his power and his remarkable practical resources, to attack the most susceptible side of the young couple. The proposal takes place in an atmosphere of playfulness and vice, but with impeccable tact and a mythical offer. What scandalized many almost thirty years ago, today would be a round business for many others; I never thought of saying that, but it is the context transferred to the current reality hahaha.
In the end, what makes us fall in love is the circumstance that makes it possible; because there are people with such economic power that they believe they can play with the life and conscience of their less favored fellow men. This cinematographic work transcends the events of its plot and focuses us on the doubt of whether we would be capable of doing something similar; beyond the absurd situations of the use of money, or the management of the situation, as if it were a bet in the casino roulette; it is a question of morality and human principles.
[Source](https://delamanodelseptimoarte.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/captura-de-pantalla-completa-01022011-2052061.jpg)Wealthy old John Gage plays dice with people's lives. How many of us have seen him do something similar, not only for mere sexual satisfaction, but also in many areas of our daily lives. The mere fact that a person who seems to have everything, wants to pay or buy something that you have at any given time, speaks of how poor he may be and the immense wealth that you may have, and that perhaps you do not value. It is not that money can buy everything, but that someone common, like you and me, have something invaluable and that we should give it its fair value.

Review My wife and I live in China and she happens to be local to the country, and as such, she has not seen as many Western films as I have, present or past, popular or awful alike. So I found the perfect way of randomly watching more films that I previously haven't seen or didn't want to watch by having her choose them on select movie nights. I must say that the results have been quite good so far, and I honour this new selection method by reviewing the film Indecent Proposal.
Released in 1992, Indecent Proposal is directed by English filmmaker Adrian Lyne and stars a young Demi Moore as Diane Murphy and Woody Harrelson as her husband David Murphy. Together the two are a picture of young love, a couple of old-time sweethearts enjoying their simple, happy life. Diana works as a real estate agent while David is a talented architect brimming with passion and optimism. With her knowledge of property, Diana and David purchase some land for him to create and build one of his architectural dream homes.
However, the recession hits hard, leaving David without a job and Diana short on clients. In their desperation, the two take to Vegas to get the money they need to pay their debts and it is here where the two eventually meet John Gage. Attracted to Diana on sight, Gage's initial interaction is brushed aside, but when lady luck leaves the Murphy's with nothing left to gamble, they happen upon a high rollers game with John Gage occupying one of the seats. Despite being married to David, Gage invites the couple to stay at the hotel on his dime and also requests they attend a special dinner. It is at this dinner that the indecent proposal is made, Gage offers the couple one million dollars for one night with Diana.
While refused with no small degree of indignation, the offer slowly eats at the couple, as the idea of solving their financial problems instantly seems too tempting an offer to pass up, especially considering the promise of possible long-term prosperity. The two create the necessary rational justifications and decide to take the offer. But David is instantly left regretting it, as a confident, smooth and dashing John Gage makes sure that a seed is planted in the mind of Diana, and that its probability of bearing fruit in the future is increased.
What was meant to be an easily forgettable evening turns into the only thing that the couple can think of, and for somewhat different reasons. David is overcome with jealousy, curiosity, and anger. Jealous of John Gage, and curious about the events of that fateful evening and incredibly angry with both himself and his wife for accepting the offer. David is fraught with paranoia, driven up the wall at his inability to truly know his wife's thoughts and true feelings. Diana feels very much the same, a sense of anger, not only at the decision that was made, but for how the evening changed her, and the guilt she feels for her own emotions towards Gage. After eventually losing their purchased property and building project, Diana discovers that it was John Gage who bought it, putting himself back into the picture. Diana's confrontation with him is the first step towards a long and inappropriate affair and the heartbreaking decay of a once beautiful and flourishing marriage.

Indecent Proposal is a film that captures the complexity of marriage. It doesn't pull punches in showing that marriage is very hard work, but interestingly enough it also shows that love both isn't and is enough to sustain it. All three characters have wonderful chemistry and individually give brilliant demonstrations of their acting credentials. Audiences are left with quite a bit with regards to character depth as all three character seem to carry some degree of fault regarding their actions and motives, indeed separating protagonist from antagonist is not as straightforward as some might want or think. The film forces us to look at the world we live in and the relationships we develop, whether money is really enough to buy happiness and satisfaction, or if there are things that it cannot and ought not claim.
The film offers up the passion, drama, happiness, anger, frustration, and reconciliation that is usually commonplace in a marriage, but equally shows a complex cast of characters that all have their own virtues and vices. Lyne seems to have shown himself to be quite skilled at shooting romance dramas packed with suspense and intrigue, and I felt this was a film that had aged quite well and is worthy of any film enthusiasts attention. And on that note, I wish you happy viewing.

I saw this movie long time ago on TV because I didn't catch it on time, but I watched enough of this movie to leave me a good impression.
The movie is about a couple on their journey to Las Vegas who they meet a very successful businessman. Initially, nothing special, the successful businessman just called the woman to play with his money in the casino, but after receiving one million for her help, he proposed another million dollars for one evening with her.
Money that you can arrange the rest of your life, a life choice that will dictate the rest of her life for sure. I will stop here because I said enough and I don't want to spoil the movie for you. The most interesting thing in this movie you will have to reveal for yourself.
For me, this was a very underrated movie on IMDb with rating of just 5.4, highly recommended.
