Hello movie lovers. Today I want to talk about one of my favorite superhero movies and the first of the Marvel Cinematographic Extended Universe, that's right, we are talking about "Iron Man", which brought success to both the actor Robert Downey Jr. who plays the lead role as well as to Marvel Studios itself. Being the first of a total of three movies of the famous hero, this film achieved success and excellent reviews from the audience both for the incredible performance and also for the special effects and CGI of that time, which have even given much to talk about recently for how well they have aged, compared to the latest films of the famous studio.

    Plot

Anthony Edward Stark, also known as Tony Stark, is the current owner of Stark Industries, an international company that produces and distributes armaments to the United States military. He inherited the company that his father, Howard Stark, left him as a legacy, along with his incredible ingenuity. His brilliant mind is both admired from a young age for his many inventions and technological advances, and hated by enemy nations who seek to steal his armaments. Tony creates a new missile, which he calls "Jericho", which aims to wipe out an entire army. After presenting it to some army leaders, he is arrested and captured by a gang called "The Ten Rings".

They, using the weapons they stole from Stark Industries, take Tony to a cave surrounded by mountains in the middle of the desolate desert of Afghanistan. Our genius now meets a man with glasses who used to work for his company and who now helped him save his life, as he almost died from a piece of shrapnel embedded in his chest, near his heart. Now, the billionaire will have to recreate the famous missile in that place with his weapons while he finds a way to get out of there alive.

    Trailer & Review

Below, I will leave you the trailer of the movie:

While it's not the first superhero movie I've been fascinated to see, it's definitely one of my favorites, and I'm not just saying that because of the incredible work done by Robert Downey Jr. and the rest of the cast and special effects team, there are also the multiple scenes and moments where it all comes together in a plot that is both fascinating and entertaining at the same time. To see one of your favorite series and comic book works done with such quality and dedication for the big screen is a total marvel.

One of the details to highlight is the very character played by Robert Downey Jr, which is not at all easy to do but curiously this actor managed to recreate the genius, eccentric, billionaire and famous protagonist to perfection. "It's as if he was born for this role", they have all said, and is that Tony Stark (Iron Man) is the character that has best made this actor in his entire career, getting to talk, express and think with him in such a way that even some of his most famous scenes are improvised.

The development of Tony Stark's character is one of the most remarkable things to talk about in this and the following movies, since he starts out as a billionaire genius who doesn't care about anything and does whatever he wants. But, after experiencing one of his strongest experiences, which almost brought him to the brink of death, he managed to reinvent himself and re-emerge with a new idea and a purpose, beyond that of creating weapons for the destruction of his enemies. Getting to this point is not easy, but after that incredible moment he lived in that cave, it pushed him to change completely.

Apart from seeing a perfect interpretation of the famous hero and genius, we can also talk about the magnificent work done in this film in terms of visual effects, special effects, CGI and sound effects. The design of Iron Man's suit, the explosions, the scenes of Tony flying with the suit, the incredible ending that shows us and the soundtrack that has this tape makes it a work worthy of being seen at least once in life. In my case, I have seen it so many times that I have lost count. And even to this day I still prefer it a thousand times than the last Marvel Studios movies, since the quality it has is a thousand times higher, despite the time.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the superhero, action and science fiction genre is concerned.

  2. Iron Man 2 (2010) | Movie Review | Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jon Favreau@gonklavez91826d

    Movie Thumbnail.png

The first Iron Man movie (no, not 1931 black-and-white, if you’re pedantic) was something of a surprise hit. Big and dumb, but with plenty of style and more than a bit of substance, it hooked the casual movie-goers and satisfied the comic book geeks. Favreau’s sequel keeps the basics, throws in comeback king Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, and tops with Scarlett Johansson in skin-tight leather catsuits.

It’s a recipe that should guarantee success, but somehow the film falls short of its predecessor.

That’s not to say it isn’t worth a watch – despite its failings; this is still a solid superhero flick. Downey Jr is excellent once again as Tony Stark, bringing his trademark mix of effortless charm and twitchy neurosis. Paltrow continues where she left off by being uncharacteristically not annoying.

But unfortunately, while the additions to the cast are all passable in isolation, they don’t quite mesh with the original bunch and the new relationships never really get off the ground.

There’s also the small matter of the plot. Sidelining the straightforward moral battle of the original, this time the framework is on an irritating debate about national defence and a misguided on-off bromance between Downey Jr and Don Cheadle (replacing Terrence Howard as Lt Rhodes in a ‘let’s hope the viewers don’t notice’ move).

While it’s understandable that Favreau wanted to put some flesh around the series’ action movie exoskeleton, neither of these new directions feel fully developed. In the end, they’re more distracting than dramatic.

Of course, there’s still some explosive good vs evil battling, with Rourke as crazed Russian scientist, Ivan Vanko (always with the crazed Russians), creating his arc-reactor suit to exact vengeance on Stark. And the action is strong as ever: it’s hard to go wrong with aerial combat, large-scale explosions and massive property destruction.

If this review sounds negative, it’s more a case of unfulfilled expectations. The franchise still has solid characters and plenty of entertainment to offer, and perhaps the most telling thing is that the uber-cheap sequel set-up at the end engendered excitement rather than dread.
