Not to advertise, or anything like that, but since we have the mouse stream platform, I have not stopped enjoying again those stories that were part of my childhood. I have allowed myself to see them from a new perspective, but without leaving aside my inner child (which I consider intact on these occasions), so while I was looking for what old adventure to get into, I could not help but watch some titles of the wonderful Robin Williams (RIP). The stories in which he participated, were spectacular, and although with his characteristic humor, he did not fail to leave a strong and forceful message. On this occasion, I am referring to Jack, directed by the film genius Francis Ford Coppola. If something characterized Robin, as I mentioned, it was his extraordinary and unique stories, although not so far from a cruel reality, and this film would be no exception. By the way, a curious fact: The speech at the end of the film is used in the posthumous tribute of Robin Williams himself.
No es por hacer publicidad, ni nada por el estilo, pero desde que tenemos la plataforma de stream del ratón, no he dejado de volver a disfrutar esas historias que formaron parte de mi infancia. Me he permitido verlas desde una nueva perspectiva, aunque sin dejar de lado mi niña interna (que considero intacta en estas ocasiones), así que mientras iba buscando en qué vieja aventura adentrarme, no pude evitar ver algunos títulos del maravilloso Robin Williams (QEPD). Las historias en las que participó, fueron espectaculares, y aunque con su humor característico, no dejaba de dejar un mensaje fuerte y contundente. En esta ocasión, me refiero a Jack, dirigida por el genio del cine Francis Ford Coppola. Si algo caracterizaba a Robin, como les mencioné, eran sus historias extraordinarias y únicas, aunque no tan alejadas de una cruel realidad, y este film no sería la excepción. Por cierto, un dato curioso: El discurso al final del film, es utilizado en el homenaje póstumo del mismo Robin Williams.
From the very beginning, Jack is destined to be unique. Born at only 3 months of gestation, this little boy was already given to many studies in search of answers. Although to be honest, I never understood why the doctors said he was “in perfect health”, only to tell the parents two seconds later that Jack has a strange genetic condition (Werner's Syndrome or commonly known as Progeria) that makes his body grow 4 times faster than anyone else's, therefore, he ages very fast. But that's okay! His development will be normal, faster, but normal.
Desde el inicio de todo, Jack esta destinado a ser único. Al nacer con apenas 3 meses de gestación, ya este pequeño estaba entregado a muchísimos estudios en busca de respuestas. Aunque para ser sincera, nunca entendí porqué los doctores dijeron que “gozaba de perfecta salud”, para dos segundos después decirles a los padres que Jack tiene una extraña condición genética (Síndrome de Werner o comúnmente conocido como Progeria) que hace que su organismo crezca 4 veces más que cualquiera, por ende, envejece rapidísimo. ¡Pero no pasa nada! Su desarrollo será normal, más rápido, pero normal.
Let's understand something, this syndrome does not give the appearance as they put it in the movie, that is clear, but I bring it up because I myself, in my ignorance as a child, believed that anyone could suffer from it and “be a child” forever. It is a mere “fantasy” and example. And, at the same time, to leave another message (tremendous move), but let's take it one step at a time.
Entendamos algo, este síndrome no da la apariencia tal y como lo ponen en la película, eso está claro, pero lo traigo a colación porque yo misma, en mi ignorancia de niña, creí que cualquiera podría padecerla y “ser un niño” por siempre. Es una mera “fantasía” y ejemplo. Y, al mismo tiempo, dejar otro mensaje (tremenda jugada), pero vayamos por parte.
His parents are exemplary, super loving and give their son everything he needs. He is homeschooled, but his teacher notices those typical cravings of every 10 year old to want to play with other kids. That's why they take a chance on Jack going to school. Jack's excitement was enormous, although he would not understand the cruelty that can often be present in some children. Little by little, he showed everyone his unique personality, his humor, his loyal friendship, his ideas, and he was accepted and loved as such.
Sus padres son ejemplares, super amorosos y le dan a su hijo todo lo que necesita. Es educado en casa, pero su maestro nota esas ansias típicas de todo niño de 10 años de querer jugar con otros niños. Es por eso que se arriesgan a que Jack vaya a la escuela. La emoción de Jack era enorme, aunque no entendería la crueldad que muchas veces puede presentarse en algunos niños. Poco a poco, fue demostrándoles a todos su personalidad única, su humor, su amistad leal, sus ideas y, fue aceptado y amado como tal.
Of course, throughout the film we can see all the obstacles Jack goes through. Recall that he is a 10 year old boy with the body and appearance of a 40 year old adult, his emotions and behavior do not match his exterior and this constantly brings him problems with his self-perception, even causing him to set himself apart from the rest. His defense mechanisms are not fully developed, so he chooses to simply isolate himself or, on the contrary, he gets into “adult trouble”. Of course, he has great support from his parents and friends, who accept him as he is, and it is thanks to this that Jack manages to develop empathy and gradually overcome his feelings of inferiority.
Claro, a lo largo de todo el film podemos ver por todos los obstáculos por los que pasa Jack. Recordemos que es un niño de 10 años con el cuerpo y la apariencia de un adulto de 40 años, sus emociones y comportamiento no coinciden con su exterior y esto le trae constantemente problemas con su autopercepción, haciendo incluso que él mismo se aparte del resto. Sus mecanismos de defensa no están del todo desarrollados, por eso opta por simplemente aislarse o, por el contrario, lo llegan a meter en “problemas de adultos”. Claro, cuenta con gran apoyo de sus padres y amigos, quienes lo aceptan tal como es, y es gracias a ello que Jack logra desarrollar empatía e ir superando poco a poco sus sentimientos de inferioridad.
We also have several key moments, which make us remember that not everything is so nice, and leave us with that cold and unpleasant feeling in the back. “Do you have cat years?”, "you're like a shooting star", "what do you want to be when you grow up?", are questionings that Jack handles very well, although he doesn't know how to deal with them. The subject of death is touched on with subtlety and crescendos as Jack becomes more aware of it. Of course, he comes to terms with it very well, but it's not about him, it's about those around him and those of us who are spectators of his story. Unfortunately, no one has been taught to accept death, we have been taught to “work to live better”; and Jack himself questions it, why study if it won't do him any good?... it can be taken as we see fit, literally or metaphorically, and the answer is so obvious, simple and wonderful that, once again, it makes us stand up and reflect: life is an accumulation of experiences and memories.
También tenemos varios momentos claves, que nos hacen recordar que no todo es tan bonito, y nos deja esa sensación fría y desagradable en la espalda. “¿Tienes años de gato?”, “eres como una estrella fugaz”, “¿qué quieren ser cuando sean grandes?”, son cuestionamientos que Jack maneja muy bien, aunque no sabe cómo afrontarlos. El tema de la muerte es tocado con sutilidad y va en crescendo a medida que Jack va tomando más conciencia de ella. Por supuesto, lo termina por asimilar muy bien, pero no se trata de él, sino de quienes lo rodean y de quienes estamos de espectadores de su historia. Lastimosamente a nadie nos han enseñado a aceptar la muerte, nos han enseñado a “trabajar para vivir mejor”; y el mismo Jack se lo cuestiona, ¿para qué estudiar si no le servirá de nada?... se puede tomar como mejor nos parezca, literal o metafóricamente, y la respuesta es tan obvia, simple y maravillosa que, otra vez, nos hace plantarnos y reflexionar: la vida es un cúmulo de experiencias y recuerdos.
And as well as this reflection, we have the other one that, no matter where I see it, I will always agree: not to let our inner child die, after all, childhood is very short and innocence is practically taken away with so many indoctrinations in homes and schools (not always, of course). From time to time it is good to play with those childhood memories and bring them back: playing in the rain, getting muddy with ice cream, laughing silly... those little acts that make us forget how hard life can be for a moment, our inner child will always be grateful. And I think it goes without saying, but if you ask me, I will answer as I always do: “If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything”.
Y así como esta reflexión, tenemos la otra que, no importa dónde la vea, siempre le daré la razón: no dejar morir nuestro niño interno, al fin y a cabo, la niñez es muy corta y la inocencia prácticamente se arrebata con tantos adoctrinamientos en casas y escuelas (no siempre, claro). De vez en cuando es bueno jugar con esos recuerdos de la infancia y traerlos de vuelta: jugar bajo la lluvia, embarrarse de helado, reír tontamente… esos pequeños actos que nos hagan olvidar lo dura que puede ser la vida por un momento, nuestro niño interno lo agradecerá siempre. Y creo que está de más, pero si me lo preguntan, les responderé como siempre: “Sino la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
