  1. CineTV Contest: King Kong (2005)@yaslenysofia992d

    ENGLISH

    ---

Wild animals are those that live in their natural state, far from the presence, daily life and human habit; besides, they constitute a great part of the planet's ecosystem. There are several films where a wild animal participates or even plays a leading role in the film, such as the one I selected for the contest of Cine TV and this is it, King Kong.

Film of adventure, drama, action and romance genre, released for the date of 2005, becoming the fourth highest grossing film in the history of Universal Pictures at that time. It was under the direction of Petter Jackson, starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black, Adrien Brody and Andy Serkis, the latter, in addition to playing the role of the cook Lumpy, also played the role of mime actor in the motion capture that allowed to adopt the great Kong, this actor has already been doing this style of work, which, in my opinion, does it wonderfully. This film is an adaptation of the 1933 classic.

The story begins with the life of Ann Darrow, an actress in a theater, which ends up closing, leaving her without a job, making her life much more complicated. In that, she meets by accident Carl Denham, a failed film director, who is desperately looking for an actress for the film he has in mind and in which she ends up joining them. However, for the realization of the film, they have to embark on a boat trip to a distant land, but not just any land, they are unknown and mysterious lands that hold a myriad of danger; a course that the crew and all those who board are unaware of.

    Captura web_10-10-2023_153545_www.imdb.com.jpeg Source

In those mysterious jungle lands also inhabits a creature, a gorilla, but not just any gorilla, it is one that measures 30 meters, approximately. Clearly, this happens to surprise Carl and the other crew members, taking the decision to take them, not an easy task at all; adding the problems they also face as the natives that inhabit there, quite wild, and other dangerous creatures. Kong and Ann form a nice connection, but, however, the fate that awaits this creature will be very unfortunate.

This wild animal revealed to us the nobility and humanity (so to speak) that many undomesticated creatures hide and, despite its ferocious nature, it opened up and understood a human being. One could even consider its actions as more humane than humans themselves; this has been seen in real life, gorillas of ordinary size or other wild animal, have managed to show selflessness and loyalty towards other species.

I have only seen gorillas in the zoo, but after growing up and understanding how painful their life is in those spaces, I prefer them to be free in the jungle or in their natural habitat. Of course, as long as they are protected from illegal hunting and the danger of extinction, and not only this species, but all other species that are at risk. I have also seen reports and articles about domesticated gorillas that, for whatever reason, were left in the care of humans, managing to create bonds with them.

    Captura web_10-10-2023_154048_www.imdb.com.jpeg Source

Besides seeing them at the zoo, in my house, months ago, a capuchin monkey was rolling around on the roofs of the neighboring houses, which, according to the park near where I live, was not responsible for it, because it was not theirs. Nobody did anything, so for a long time it stayed between my house, which has a mango tree, and my aunt's house, where there are also many plants. However, one day it was never seen again, I hope it has been put back where it belongs.

To conclude, King Kong is a really good movie, with some flaws, but this does not diminish the well done special effects, Serkis with his incredible interpretation to achieve the movements very similar to these animals. A film that has its own identity and who does not remember the great gorilla on top of the Empire State Building; a creature that showed selfless love and that, at the same time, was a victim of human cruelty.

    Captura web_10-10-2023_153545_www.imdb.com.jpeg Fuente

    Captura web_10-10-2023_154048_www.imdb.com.jpeg Fuente

  2. Film Review: King Kong (1933)@drax1196d

    (source: tmdb.org)

The most groundbreaking films in history of cinema belonged to science fiction and related genres. This isn’t surprising, since new and innovative technology was often required to put on the screen worlds that someone wasn’t likely to see in real life. Many films featuring such new wonders of cinema quickly sank into oblivion after novelty had worn off, but there are some notable exceptions. One of them is King Kong, 1933 adventure horror epic directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, which was a big hit and today enjoys reputation of the most influential and iconic films of 1930s.

The plot begins in New York Harbor where Carl Denham (played by Ben Armstrong), film maker famous for documentaries and similar films set in distant and exotic lands, has chartered a ship that would bring him to mysterious location for his next project. Denham is reluctant to sail, because he lacks actress his financial backers deem necessary for the film. Chance encounter with starving Ann Darrow (played by Fay Wray) solves that problem and expedition sails immediately. Weeks later they arrive at Skull Island, remote, poorly charted location west of Sumatra. Denham lands with part of the crew and Darrow and soon finds native tribe that lives on the other side of huge wall apparently built by mysterious civilisation long time ago. Tribesmen abduct Ann Darrow in order to be sacrificed to “Kong”, gigantic ape that lives. Denham and Jack Driscoll (played by Bruce Cabot), ship’s first mate who has fallen in love with Darrow, lead the rescue party that goes beyond the wall and has to deal not only with Kong, but also with many specimens of gigantic and extremely dangerous prehistoric fauna. Driscoll, despite much of his party being killed, manages to set Darrow free from Kong and the gigantic ape is later, with the help of tranquillising gas, captured by Denham. Kong is brought to New York City where Denham shows him as “eighth wonder of the world”, but he makes a mistake of doing so in Darrow’s presence, motivating gigantic ape to free himself from restraints and start rampage through the streets.

King Kong was made only few years after introduction of sound to cinema. Its comparison with the earliest sound films shows how quickly Hollywood managed to master new technology. King Kong flawlessly fuses visuals with the new and better sound and looks like a Hollywood film that could be made many decades later. This impression is partly created by score by Max Steiner, prolific composer of film music for Classic Hollywood. His full-length work is one of the first to perfectly fit the film and even add opera-like leitmotifs that would become standard of film music.

But it’s not the sound that made King Kong legendary. Produced by RKO, studio that was one of the great giants of Classic Hollywood that haven’t survived to this day, this film features collection of innovative special effects that include use of miniatures, stop-motion animation, matte paintings and rear projection. Although some of those techniques were used in earlier films, Cooper and Schoedsack managed to fuse them in a comprehensive and effective way creating breath-taking images audience had never seen before. Although some of those techniques look a little bit dated now, like stop-motion animation by Willis H. O’Brien, it represented something of quantum leap for standards visual illusion of cinema, that won’t be repeated for a very long time, at least not until Star Wars or even introduction of CGI technology.

While technical achievements of King Kong were almost universally praised after premiere, its content was subject of criticism. The most obvious complaints, at least from today’s viewpoint, addressed the treatment of tribal people in the film who, being black, were assumed to be portrayed according to racist stereotypes of the era. Even the basic concept of the film – giant ape being obsessed with beautiful white woman – was considered to be, consciously or subconsciously, reflection of some of the vilest sentiments within 1930s American society. Those accusations were actually taken very seriously by Cooper and Schoedsack, who were vehemently and explicitly denied any racist motivation for their work. Their claims were helped by Nazi Germany initially banning King Kong, although proper motivation for that decision probably had more to do with German film studios being embarrassed by inability to match this film’s work than with politics.

More serious complaints against King Kong addressed some issues with allegedly poor acting and characterisation. Film’s biggest star Fay Wray doesn’t do much in the film apart from looking pretty and screaming a lot, earning the title of the first and arguably the best known “scream queen” in the history of cinema. Obligatory romantic subplot between Ann Darrow and Driscoll seems a little bit awkward and artificially inserted in the film. Yet, script written by James Creelman and Schoedsack’s wife Ruth Rose, based on the story by Cooper and prolific British crime writer Edgar Wallace (who died before the actual production), deflects that criticisms in an ingenious way. Character of Carl Denham is actually based on Cooper, an adventurous spirit who, like his fictional alter ego, made his name by shooting documentaries about exotic animals in distant parts of the world. Through his words authors of the film explain the need for presence of character of Ann Darrow in their fictional film and, subsequently, in King Kong itself. In this way their film obtains “meta” quality that is quite rare in history of cinema, making it even more remarkable. What looks like slow and uneventful scenes at beginning actually work in film’s favour; like all good action/horror films, King Kong introduces us to characters and make us care about their ultimate fate. And monster not being revealed until late in the film is lesson learned by all good masters of the genre, like Steven Spielberg who used same approach in his megahit Jaws.

Success of King Kong had the same consequences as it would have today. Two years later a direct sequel Son of Kong was directed by Schoedsack and again starring Ben Armstrong (who later claimed that he preferred such version). Further sequels weren’t made, but King Kong had important effect in other parts of the world, most notably Japan where film makers like Ishiro Honda would take inspiration for films like Godzilla and whole new genre of “kaiju films”. Those two franchise would ultimately merge in 1960s with various crossovers and some of them, like Godzilla vs Kong, were quite recent. King Kong itself received two major remakes – 1976 version by John Guillermin, which is considered vastly inferior and 2005 version by Peter Jackson, which is more faithful retelling of the story.

    RATING: 9/10 (++++)

In the year 1933 King Kong is released, this film combines the best cinematographic advances of that time in conjunction with an innovative scenery.

A filmmaker who likes adventures named Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) meets an actress with bad luck, Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) after she is caught stealing an apple. He saves her from jail, gives her a plate of food and convinces her to go with him to a remote island where he plans to shoot a movie.

The film crew decides to shoot on the mysterious Skull Island in East Sumatra, where they encounter a prehistoric civilization and an ancient tribe that kidnaps Ann Darrow to offer her as a sacrifice to a giant gorilla.

The animal falls in love with the girl, and defends her from the attack of prehistoric creatures. The ship's crew travels deep into the jungle to rescue her and are attacked by the creatures that inhabit the place. They barely manage to save Ann and King Kong is reduced by the expedition. Immediately it is decided to transport the amazing ape to New York, to be publicly exhibited.

King Kong escapes spreading terror in the city. King Kong's contact with a world that is not his own and the love he feels for Ann will tragically precipitate the events. The enormous gorilla is shot down by airplanes while climbing the Empire State Building (inaugurated in 1931).

The film handles three main ideas: that of the lost world, the killer ape and the story of beauty and the beast. In addition, it proved to be an excellent entertainment to evade the worries of the American people originated by the Great Depression that began in 1929 and lasted almost a decade.

    image.png Source

    Main ideas:

    The Lost World.

In 1912, the British writer Arthur Conan Doyle writes The Lost World, a novel that takes place in South America, in a place isolated from the world where prehistoric animals survive, including dinosaurs.

This novel was adapted in 1925 to film, produced and distributed by a major studio at the time (First National Pictures), and stars Wallace Beery as Professor Challenger. It was directed by Harry O. Hoyt with stop motion special effects by Willis O'Brien who was also in charge of the special effects of King Kong.

Here it is the first dinosaur movie in history, and one of the first works to feature stop motion animation in the world:

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX4lkL0ojeo)

Since the time of silent films, directors Ernest B. Schoedsack and Merian C. Cooper stood out as documentary filmmakers, especially in films based on the observation of wild animals. Schoedsack and Merian C. Cooper stood out as documentary filmmakers, especially in films based on the observation of wild animals. In 1929 Cooper met his friend W. Douglas Burden, an employee of the American Museum of Nature History in New York who had just published a work on Komodo dragons, and the two began to imagine fantastic creatures of great size.

In 1931 Willis O'Brien, had created several dinosaur models for his unfinished production Creation (1931), then Merian C. Cooper told him about his giant gorilla idea and they began to develop a series of sketches, and he sold the idea of King Kong to RKO executives in New York by showing them a test sequence using O'Brien's models.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoTzUtsjICA)

They were stunned, and gave the go-ahead for the production of King Kong. O'Brien also used many of his Creation models in King Kong, including Tyrannosaurus rex and Pteranodon.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGNQ5vRxNU8)

    The Killer Ape.

As a reader of adventure novels, Cooper found that many of them developed the idea of the killer gorilla.

As a reader of adventure novels Cooper finds that many of them developed the idea of the killer gorilla. A literary precedent for this myth is found in The Crimes of the Rue Morgue (1841), a story by Edgar Allan Poe in which an orangutan murders two women in Paris.

Cooper also read the publications of the American explorer Paul Belloni du Chaillu, who popularized his jungle adventures in Exploration and Adventures in Equatorial Africa (1861), and recounted his experience as the first white man to hunt a gorilla.

The filmmaker was also influenced by the works of French sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet, an observer of great apes in captivity. These were gruesome and his creatures embodied violence and sexual immoderation.

    image.png

    Fuente

The myth of beauty and the beast.

The gorilla experiences an intense fascination for the blonde heroine, a reference about this is found in the story Beauty and the Beast (1757), by Jeanne M. Leprince de Beaumont. In the film the monster falls in love with the beauty represented by Ann Darrow, so King Kong ends up a victim of human ignorance.

    [Source](https://tenor.com/view/king-kong-happy-struggle-gif-14416326)

Between 1933 and 1952 the film was released four times. Scenes where the ape chews people or steps on them were cut, as well as when he undresses Ann.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkqQq3XwV3c)

    A complex shooting.

The production company RKO decided that the film would be shot entirely in studio to take advantage of the sets of the films: The Wicked Zaroff (The most dangerous game) of 1932 for the jungle scenes, King of Kings of 1927 for the walls of the native village that closes to contain King Kong and Bird of Paradise of 1932 for the huts.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLiohugUvgk) [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFhcdF_td10) [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-QVfb5hmqk)

The scenes in which there were no special effects began shooting in June 1932 and were completed four weeks later. The process of bringing King Kong to life included making miniature figures for the scenes where models were used, such as the confrontation with other animals, or the finale at the Empire State Building.

    [Source](https://tenor.com/view/gorilla-armada-caindo-falling-king-kong-gif-12295326)

The special effects team had to film frame by frame and various parts of the gorilla had to be made life-size, specifically the head, a hand, and a foot in order to shoot scenes such as the one in which King Kong looks at Ann Darrow in the palm of his hand. To move the beast's eyes and jaw, four specialists had to work inside the giant head.

    image.png

During the viewing of the film, the inhumanity of removing the gorilla in love from his habitat, a place where he was undisputedly the king, now he is prey and slave to a society that binds him in chains for profit, is palpable.

When watching any of the Jurassic Park or Godzilla movies I always remember King Kong.

I enjoyed this movie for the first time on television, being one of the films that helped me to grow my taste for fantastic adventure films. It has touches of comedy, horror, and spectacular music.

I find spectacular the liberation of the ape before the human oppression, he is nervous in front of the crowd and the flashes of the cameras. King Kong escapes and seeks Ann Darrow to possess and protect her, creating chaos in New York City.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X655IzM01ug)

The most emotionally nuanced character in the entire film is precisely King Kong, the human protagonists pale in the presence of the gorilla.

Fay Wray playing Ann Darrow is portrayed as a damsel in distress, helpless before the ape, screaming every time he appears.

Robert Armstrong, is Carl Denham, a film producer and director much questioned for his sanity and outlandish projects.

Bruce Cabot as Jack Driscoll, first mate of the ship Venture, falls in love with Ann Darrow, and manages to rescue her when she is kidnapped by King Kong on Skull Island.

CGI animation has its conceptual roots in stop motion animation. It was the first successful film to feature a realistic animated central character in any form. King Kong is a pioneering film thanks to Willis O'Brien, a special effects genius.

The music ceases to be a simple accompaniment to the plot, here it is part of the story, and its characters. It manages to feel adjusted to each scene and image of the film. Never before has a score been composed exclusively for a film, and this is the first time. The author of it is Max Steiner, who a little later will compose the music for another great classic film: Gone with the Wind.

This is my proposal to participate in the initiative Cinetv Contest: Your favorite classic film(s) Link Here.

I hope you enjoyed reading the publication and that it encourages you to watch and understand more of classic cinema. Good luck to all participants. See you next time.

    [Fuente](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Emmanuel_Fr%C3%A9miet_(1824-1910)_-_Gorilla_(1887)_(12127172674).png)
