I decided to see this movie because it stars Harvey Keitel, I think he is an actor who has given more than he has received and I really liked the idea of seeing him narrating a story whose genre is one of my favorites. Keitel bought me with his role of "Mr Wolf" in "Pulp Fiction", then I found out that when he read the script of "Reserve Dogs" written by an unknown Quentin Tarantino, he liked it so much that he decided to co-produce and put money out of his pocket to see a story that excited him come true.
Lansky is a BioPic about Meyer Lansky, a mob character played by Harvey Keitel who, knowing he is close to death, decides to confess his life to journalist David Stone played by Sam Worthington. This is the film's premise and maybe in a world where there is "Goodfellas" (1990) and with a recent "The Irishman" (2019) it is difficult to give a chance to an almost unknown direct as Eytan Rockaway who has a filmography that is just beginning. Nevertheless, for the reasons stated above I decided to see it and now I will tell you about my experience.
Decidí ver esta película porque está protagonizada por Harvey Keitel, creo que es un actor que ha dado más de lo que ha recibido y me gustó mucho la idea de verlo narrando una historia cuyo género es uno de mis favoritos. Keitel me compró con su papel del “Mr Wolf” en “Pulp Fiction”, luego me entere que cuando él leyó el guion de “Reserve Dogs” escrito por un desconocido Quentin Tarantino, le gustó tanto que decidió co-producir y poner dinero de su bolsillo para ver hecha realidad una historia que lo emocionó.
Lansky es una BioPic (película biográfica) sobre Meyer Lansky, un personaje de la mafia interpretado por Harvey Keitel quien al saberse cerca de la muerte decide confesar su vida al periodista David Stone interpretado por Sam Worthington. Esta es la primicia de la película y puede que un mundo donde existe “Goodfellas” (1990) y con un reciente “The Irishman” (2019) sea difícil darle una oportunidad a un casi desconocido directo como Eytan Rockaway que posee una filmografía que apenas inicia. No obstante, por los motivos expuesto anteriormente decidí verla y ahora les comento mi experiencia.
It begins with a kind of interview where Mr. Lansky states what he is accused of and his position before such accusations. Of which he highlights that he is presumed to be hiding a fortune of 300 million dollars and is the main reason for the government to investigate him. Then we meet David Stone (Sam Worthington) a journalist with economic problems whom Mr. Lansky chose to tell him about his life, he meets him in a coffee shop and establishes the terms that will govern the interview.
Lansky is a Jew who comes from Russia, but as a 10 year old boy begins his story in the New York of 1912, he tells him how his suspicion driven by his anger made him understand that in gambling as in life the winners are those who control the game.
Then begins the narration of the story through flashbacks, where we will see a young Lansky played by John Magaro, who does not convince me and I think it is one of the weak points of the film, as well as his partner of beginnings Ben Siegel, played by David Cade.
Inicia con una especie de entrevista donde el Sr Lansky establece de que se le acusa y su postura ante tales acusaciones. De lo que destaca que se presume que él esconde una fortuna de 300 millones de dólares y es el principal motivo de que el Gobierno lo investigue. Luego conocemos a David Stone (Sam Worthington) un periodista con problemas económicos al que el Sr Lansky eligió para contarle su vida, lo cita en una cafetería y establece los términos que van a regir la entrevista.
Lansky es un judío que proviene de Rusia, pero siendo un niño de 10 años de edad comienza su historia en la Nueva York de 1912, le cuenta como con su suspicacia impulsada por su ira le hizo entender que en las apuestas como en la vida los ganadores son quienes controlan el juego.
Entonces Inicia el relato de la historia a través de flashbacks, donde vamos a ver a un joven Lansky interpretado por John Magaro, quien no termina de convencerme y creo que unos de los puntos débiles de la película, al igual que su compañero de inicios Ben Siegel interpretado por David Cade

In his story Lansky introduces a subject that I believe has never been treated in a film of this genre, telling how the Jewish mafia served the F.B.I. and the U.S. Government in their intelligence operations against the advance of Nazi spies on U.S. soil. He says they were instrumental in dismantling the entire Nazi Intelligence network.
He continues with the montage that I liked the most, the sequence where Lansky narrates how his "good Jewish and Italian boys" help him position himself at the table of the National Crime Syndicate, sitting next to personalities such as Frank Costello, Joe Bonanno and Al Capone.
Lansky continues his climb and runs casino operations ranging from Batista's Cuba to Las Vegas in 1947, as his marriage deteriorates and he heeds a request for financial assistance from Golda Mayer, Prime Minister of Israel at the time.
As Lansky's story progresses through various meetings in the cafeteria, another plot emerges in which David Stone becomes involved with a girl at the Motel where he is staying, who ends up being an FBI informant on the trail of Lansky's money.
En su relato Lansky introduce un tema que creo nunca se ha tratado en una película de este género, contando como la mafia judía sirvió al F.B.I. y al Gob. De Los Estados Unidos en sus operaciones de inteligencia contra el avance de espías nazis en suelo norteamericano. Él dice que fueron fundamentales para desmontar toda la red de Inteligencia nazi.
Sigue con el montaje que más me gustó, la secuencia donde Lansky narra cómo sus “buenos muchachos judíos e italianos” lo ayuda posicionarse en la mesa del Sindicato Nacional del Crimen, sentándose al lado de personalidades como Frank Costello, Joe Bonanno y Al Capone.
Lansky sigue en su escalda y dirige operaciones de casinos que van desde la Cuba de Batista hasta Las Vegas de 1947, mientras su matrimonio se deteriora y atiende el pedido de ayuda financiera por parte de Golda Mayer, Primera Ministra de Israel para ese entonces.

Lansky finishes his story and prepares to say goodbye to Stone, at which point Stone asks him about the money, to which Lansky instead of answering invites him for a walk and takes him to a place called "Green Areas", where I think I understand the money is located. He says goodbye with a touching dialogue and the scene continues with a monologue by Stone as we watch him drive.
The Government closes the investigation by a higher order that I am not clear.
El tema político vuelve cuando el Estado de Israel atendiendo a sus relaciones con EEUU niega la ciudadanía a Lansky ignorando la Lay del Retorno Judío, obligándolo a permanecer en Estados Unidos.
El F.B.I. sigue presionando a Stone, lo que lleva a la muerte de un ex socio de Lansky y hace que Lansky y Stone ponga las cartas sobre la mesa.
En el relato el matrimonio de Lansky se sigue deteriorando, lo que me hace destacar la interpretación de AnnaSophia Robb, una actriz que trabaja desde niña y sabe aprovechar las oportunidades que le da el guion para demostrar sus capacidades.
Lansky termina su relato y se dispone a despedirse de Stone, momento en que este le pregunta por el dinero, a lo que Lansky en lugar de responder lo invita a dar un paseo y lo lleva a un lugar llamado Verdes Prados, donde creo entender se encuentra el mismo. Se despide con un dialogo conmovedor y la escena sigue con un monologo de Stone mientras lo vemos conducir.
El Gobierno cierra la investigación por una Orden superior que no me quedo clara.

In Conclusion, Meyer Lansky's operations reached important levels in the history of crime, this on paper results in a very attractive script, which I imagine caused Harvey Keitel to decide to take this role. But the execution of the film's production did not turn out as expected. Nonetheless, it's still a watchable film at home, with a story that makes the viewer want to see it through to the end. It's always nice to see Keitel at work, Annasophia Robb contributes little, and Sam Worthington does his job. The photography is another highlight. To see and enjoy "Lansky" you have to be aware that we are not watching a gangster movie directed by Coppola or Scorsese.
En conclusión, Las operaciones de Meyer Lansky alcanzaron niveles importantes en la historia del crimen, esto en papel resulta en un guion muy atractivo, lo que imagino causo que Harvey Keitel decidiera tomar este papel. Pero la ejecución de la producción del filme no dio el resultado esperado. No obstante, no deja de ser una película que se deja ver en casa, con una historia que hace al espectador querer ver el final. Siempre es agradable ver a Keitel trabajar, Annasophia Robb aunque aparece poco aporta y Sam Worthington se puede decir que cumple con su trabajo. La fotografía es otro punto a destacar. Para ver y disfrutar “Lansky” hay que estar consciente de que no estamos viendo una película de Gansters dirigida por Coppola o Scorsese.
