Hello everyone, my dear Hive community, I hope you're all doing great today. On this occasion, I want to talk about a new review; I'm going to give you my personal opinions on Lazarus... Seriously, if there was one series this year that had me all over the place with my emotions, it was this one. I don't know if the same thing happened to you, but when they announced it, my hype—I mean, my expectations—were through the roof. I mean... how could they not be? Let's break down the ingredients of this bombshell, because the recipe was insane. First, they tell you: the project is from Adult Swim. Okay, with just that, you know it's not going to be just anything. But then, they drop the first big name: Shinichirō Watanabe. Watanabe, people! The same genius who gave us Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, two of the most stylish animes in history. Look, just hearing his name, I was already sold, I had already bought the poster, everything.
But wait, it doesn't end there. For the action scenes, they brought in none other than the director of John Wick. To animate all this, the studio that's absolutely killing it: MAPPA. Yes, the same one that blew our minds with Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man... I mean... with that team, with those people, you know what I mean? I wasn't waiting for an anime, I was waiting for an event! Something that would change the game. I was so sure that Lazarus was going to be THE series, the one everyone would be talking about for months. The plot... ugh, the plot is one of those that hooks you from the first second and never lets go. Picture this: it's the year 2052... humanity lives in peace, in a perfect world, all thanks to a miracle drug called Japna.
This little pill, created by a genius, Dr. Skinner—a guy who won a Nobel Prize and everything—completely eliminated disease and pain. It's like taking a vitamin; everyone uses it. But this is where it all goes to hell. Three years after the drug came out, Dr. Skinner himself appears out of nowhere and drops a bombshell: it turns out Japna has an expiration date... and when that day comes, everyone who took it—so, basically the entire world—is going to die. The guy basically poisoned the entire planet with his own cure. So, to prevent everyone from getting screwed, they create an elite team, a group called Lazarus... they are five special agents with a single mission: find Skinner and get an antidote before time runs out. So you have science fiction, suspense, global conspiracies, and a ticking clock that will give you goosebumps... the concept is brilliant, one of the best I've heard in a long, long time.
Hola a todos, querida comunidad de Hive, espero que hoy estén super bien, en esta ocasión, les quiero hablar de una nueva reseña, les daré mis opiniones personales de Lazarus.. en serio, si ha habido una serie que este año me tuvo de un lado para otro con las emociones, fue esta, yo no sé si a ustedes les pasó lo mismo, pero cuando la anunciaron, mi hype, o sea, mis expectativas, estaban por el cielo. Es que… ¿cómo no iban a estarlo? A ver, analicemos los ingredientes de esta bomba, porque la receta era para volverse loco.. primero, te dicen: el proyecto es de Adult Swim, listo, ya con eso sabes que no va a ser cualquier cosa.. pero después, te tiran el primer nombre pesado: Shinichirō Watanabe. ¡Watanabe, gente! El mismo genio que nos dio Cowboy Bebop y Samurai Champloo, dos de los animes con más estilo de la historia, miren, con solo escuchar su nombre yo ya estaba listo, ya había comprado el póster, todo.
Pero esperen, que la cosa no termina ahí, para las escenas de acción se trajeron, nada más y nada menos, que al director de John Wick.. para animar todo esto, el estudio que la está rompiendo toda: MAPPA. Sí, el mismo que nos voló la cabeza con Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man.. o sea… con ese equipo, con esa gente, ¿me entienden? Yo no estaba esperando un anime, ¡estaba esperando un evento! Algo que cambiara las reglas del juego, yo estaba segurísimo de que Lazarus iba a ser LA serie, esa de la que todo el mundo iba a estar hablando por meses.. la trama… uff, la trama es de esas que te enganchan desde el primer segundo y no te sueltan más. Imagínense esto: estamos en el año 2052.. la humanidad vive en paz, en un mundo perfecto, todo gracias a una droga milagrosa que se llama Japna.
Esta pastillita, creada por un genio, el Dr. Skinner, un tipo que se ganó un Premio Nobel y todo, eliminó por completo las enfermedades y el dolor, es como tomarse una vitamina, todo el mundo la usa.. pero acá es donde todo se va al diablo. Tres años después de que salió la droga, el mismísimo Dr. Skinner aparece de la nada y suelta una bomba: resulta que la Japna tiene fecha de vencimiento.. cuando ese día llegue, todos los que la tomaron, o sea, básicamente todo el mundo, se van a morir. El tipo, básicamente, envenenó al planeta entero con su propia cura, así que, para evitar que todos nos vayamos al carajo, crean un equipo de élite, un grupo llamado Lazarus.. son cinco agentes especiales que tienen una sola misión: encontrar a Skinner y conseguir un antídoto antes de que el tiempo se acabe. O sea, tienes ciencia ficción, suspenso, conspiraciones globales y un reloj corriendo que te pone los pelos de punta.. el concepto es una genialidad, de lo mejor que he escuchado en mucho, mucho tiempo.
So, with all that hype, I dove headfirst into the first episode. Visually, people... it's insane. The series looks incredible, there's no doubt about that; you can see MAPPA's handiwork everywhere. The mix they do of traditional 2D with CGI is super well done, very clean... everything moves with such fluidity... uff! Especially in the fights, that's when you say: "Of course, this is the work of the John Wick director." The action choreographies are brutal, they have that energy, that style that feels like you're watching a movie in a theater. There are some sequences that are a choreography of bullets and beatdowns that leave you glued to your seat. Technically, it's a 10 out of 10, but... and here comes the giant BUT, people... this is where my excitement started to nosedive.
As incredible as everything sounded and as spectacular as it looked, the story never, ever managed to hook me. It hurts a lot to say this, I swear, because I really wanted to love this series. The idea is great, but the way they tell it... that's where things fall apart. As the 13 episodes went by, I felt more and more that they were padding it with a lot of filler, you know? Just fluff. I felt that the main story, that race against time, got lost in a bunch of subplots that went nowhere or were resolved too easily. It gave me the feeling that this whole story could have been told much better in about six or seven episodes, more to the point, with more punch. The pacing was super irregular... suddenly you had super slow, snail-paced episodes, and then out of nowhere, boom!, everything sped up abruptly without much sense.
Así que bueno, con todo ese hype, me tiré de cabeza a ver el primer capítulo.. a ver, visualmente, gente... es una locura, la serie se ve increíble, de eso no hay duda, se nota la mano de MAPPA por todos lados. Esa mezcla que hacen del 2D de toda la vida con el CGI está súper bien hecha, muy limpia.. todo se mueve con una fluidez… ¡uff!, sobre todo en las peleas, ahí es cuando dices: "Claro, aquí está la mano del director de John Wick". Las coreografías de acción son brutales, tienen esa energía, ese estilo que se siente como si estuvieras viendo una película en el cine.. hay unas secuencias que son una coreografía de balazos y madrazos que te dejan pegado al sillón.. técnicamente es un 10 de 10, pero… y aquí viene el PERO gigante, gente… aquí fue donde mi emoción empezó a caer en picada.
Por más que todo sonaba increíble y se veía espectacular, la historia nunca, pero nunca, me terminó de atrapar.. me duele un montón decirlo, se los juro, porque yo de verdad quería que me encantara esta serie, la idea es buenísima, pero la forma en que la cuentan… ahí es donde la cosa se cae. Mientras iban pasando los 13 capítulos, cada vez sentía más que le metían mucho relleno, ¿saben? Pura paja.. sentía que la historia principal, esa carrera contra el tiempo, se perdía entre un montón de tramas secundarias que no iban a ningún lado o que se solucionaban demasiado fácil, me dio la sensación de que toda esta historia se pudo contar mucho mejor en unos seis o siete capítulos, más al grano, con más fuerza. El ritmo era súper irregular.. de repente tenías capítulos lentísimos, a paso de tortuga, y de la nada, ¡pum!, todo se aceleraba de golpe sin mucho sentido.
And it gets worse, people, with one of the series' biggest problems: the overuse of plot conveniences. You know what I'm talking about, right? Those solutions pulled out of thin air, super convenient and without any logic, just so the story can continue. It's the typical: "Oh no, we have no idea where Skinner is, we've gone weeks without a single clue... Oh, what do you know! This character who just appeared out of nowhere gave us a USB with the guy's exact address in a distant country. Let's go!" This kind of thing happens all the time. It gets to a point where you just disconnect, because you feel like the protagonists aren't earning anything; it's all just handed to them. Of course, this ends up killing the characters.
The Lazarus team had potential, but you never get to connect with them, you don't care about them. They're like templates, you know? The leader who suffers from his past, the girl who's a computer genius, the quiet big guy... they're clichés, they don't feel like real people. I wanted to worry about them, to feel their desperation, but the series treats them so superficially that in the end, you don't care if they live or die. Zero empathy. And the ending... oh my god, the ending... It feels super rushed, anticlimactic, and worst of all, it leaves you with a ton of questions hanging in the air. I mean, you spend the whole season waiting for answers to mysteries they set up at the beginning, and the ending just plays dumb. The climactic moment, that final confrontation that should have been epic, feels super watered-down, with no punch, without the emotional impact it needed.
Y la cosa se pone peor, gente, con uno de los problemas más grandes que tiene la serie: el abuso de los "guionazos".. ustedes saben de lo que hablo, ¿no? Esas soluciones que se sacan de la manga, súper convenientes y sin ninguna lógica, solo para que la historia pueda seguir, es el típico: "Ay, no, no tenemos ni idea de dónde está Skinner, llevamos semanas sin una sola pista... ¡Ah, mira tú! Este personaje que acaba de aparecer de la nada nos dio un USB con la dirección exacta del tipo en un país lejano. ¡Vámonos!".. este tipo de cosas pasan a cada rato, llega un punto en que ya te desconectas, porque sientes que los protagonistas no se están ganando nada, todo se lo regalan.. claro, esto termina matando a los personajes.
El equipo Lazarus tenía potencial, pero es que nunca llegas a conectar con ellos, no te importan, son como plantillas, ¿saben? El líder que sufre por su pasado, la chica que es una genio con las computadoras, el grandulón callado... son clichés, no se sienten como gente de verdad.. yo quería preocuparme por ellos, sentir su desesperación, pero la serie los trata tan por encima que al final te da igual si viven o mueren.. cero empatía. Y el final... ay, dios mío, el final.. se siente súper apurado, anticlimático y lo peor es que te deja con un montón de preguntas en el aire. O sea, te pasas toda la temporada esperando respuestas a misterios que te pusieron al principio, y el final simplemente se hace el loco.. el momento cumbre, esa confrontación final que debía ser épica, se siente súper aguada, sin fuerza, sin ese golpe emocional que necesitaba.
And this is when you start connecting the dots and it hits you that, most likely, this whole disaster has to do with a chaotic production. Do you remember that spectacular announcement in July 2023? Well, after that, the series disappeared off the map, total silence. Months and months without trailers, without posters, without news... nothing. For a project with such big names, it was super weird. Suddenly, with almost no publicity, boom!, they released it and that was it. The rumor is that when they finished, Watanabe wasn't very happy and asked to fix some scenes, but in the end, they never listened to him. It's said that Adult Swim might have released an unfinished version, just like that. If you look at the credits of the first episode, the list of animators, assistants, and studios involved is extremely long, which in this industry is usually a red flag that screams: "THIS WAS A MESS!"
Of course, speaking of MAPPA, this is almost normal by now, but still, it's a bad sign. In the end, Lazarus left me with a very bittersweet aftertaste, a mix of emotions. It's not trash, not by a long shot, it's technically very well made and has moments that are brilliant, but it's also not the gem they promised us. It's the perfect example of a wasted opportunity. It had all the ingredients to be a classic: a legendary director, a great idea, top-tier action, and a powerhouse studio, but poor organization, a disjointed story, and a half-baked execution meant it never became what it could have been. It feels like a series assembled in pieces, like a product rather than a work with a soul. It's a "decent" series, "good" if you will, but it doesn't live up to the tremendous hype it generated for itself. That's why, if I had to give it a score, I'd give it a 7/10.
It's above average, yes, but it's impossible not to feel that pang of disappointment for what could have been. I hope I'm wrong and, if they ever release a second season, they manage to right the ship. But for now, Lazarus stands as a reminder that not even the best idea in the world can shine if the execution is bad. It's frustrating, because you see the potential in every scene, you can almost touch the masterpiece hiding underneath, but it never fully emerges. And well, until next time! Y aquí es cuando uno empieza a atar cabos y te cae la ficha de que, seguramente, todo este desastre tiene que ver con una producción caótica.. ustedes se acuerdan de ese anuncio espectacular en julio de 2023? Bueno, después de eso, la serie desapareció del mapa, dilencio total.. meses y meses sin tráilers, sin pósters, sin noticias… nada. Para un proyecto con estos nombres tan pesados, era súper raro.. de repente, casi sin hacerle publicidad, ¡pum!, la estrenaron y ya, por ahí anda el chisme de que, cuando terminaron, Watanabe no estaba muy contento y pidió arreglar algunas escenas, pero que al final nunca le hicieron caso. Se dice que Adult Swim podría haber lanzado una versión sin terminar, así nomás.. si te fijas en los créditos del primer capítulo, la lista de animadores, asistentes y estudios que metieron mano es larguísima, lo que en esta industria suele ser una bandera roja que te grita: “¡AQUÍ HUBO UN DESMADRE!”.
Claro que, hablando de MAPPA, esto ya es casi normal, pero igual, es una mala señal.. al final, Lazarus me dejó un sabor de boca súper agridulce, una mezcla de emociones. No es una porquería, ni de lejos, técnicamente está muy bien hecha y tiene momentos que son brillantes, pero tampoco es la joya que nos prometieron. Es el ejemplo perfecto de una oportunidad desperdiciada..tenía todos los ingredientes para ser un clásico: un director legendario, una idea buenísima, acción de primer nivel y un estudio potente, pero la mala organización, una historia que no se siente unida y una ejecución que se queda a medias, hicieron que nunca llegara a ser lo que pudo ser. Se siente como una serie armada por pedazos, como un producto, más que como una obra con alma.. es una serie "decente", "buena" si quieres, pero no está a la altura del tremendo hype que ella misma generó.. por eso, si le tuviera que poner una nota, le daría un 7/10.
Está por encima del promedio, sí, pero es imposible no sentir esa punzada de decepción por lo que pudo haber sido, ojalá me equivoque y, si algún día sacan una segunda temporada, logren arreglar el barco. Pero por ahora, Lazarus se queda como un recordatorio de que ni la mejor idea del mundo puede brillar si la ejecución es mala.. es frustrante, porque le ves el potencial en cada escena, casi puedes tocar la obra maestra que se esconde debajo, pero nunca termina de salir.. y bueno hasta la próxima!
