There are TV series that leave their mark on history (Mad Men, The Wire, Six Feet Under), others that become the holy grail of seriality (Breaking Bad), others that become popular and cultural phenomena (Lost, Game of Thrones), others that become sentimentally essential (Friends, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother), others that become niche series (The Americans, Sons Of Anarchy).
Legion definitely belongs to this last category.
A series for a few, for very few people, despite being set in the most commercial and successful genre of the last 10 years, the superhero series.
Noah Hawley took a very powerful but niche superhero like Legion and made him the protagonist of his creative delirium trying to write and draw a complicated and different series, very original.
Over the course of the 3 seasons we have witnessed memorable pages not only of seriality but of visual art all with exaggerated and exasperated experimentation but always functional to tell the true delirium at the base of the series, the delirium of its protagonist David.
A very powerful, devastating superhero who has been given a very difficult role, that of a man, a boy struggling with his demons. For David the real war was within himself and the beautiful final episode led us to his showdown with the search for a solution that not only prevented the war of the worlds and the end of time, but above all brought peace to his soul and therefore to his eternal struggle with his monsters, represented by Farouk physically and metaphorically.
Legion did not need and did not want to tell of heroes in tights ready to solve every crime. What Hawley wanted was to show us the fragility and complexity of a boy who was never normal and as such had no normal problems and dilemmas.
But David was a boy, not an extraterrestrial, and as such he didn't need extraterrestrial solutions but a personal and completely human awareness.
Between musical excerpts, mental lucubrations, astral planes, micro-worlds and super-worlds, time travel, split personalities, absurd characters, what emerged was an extraordinary painting about the human being undressed from the role of the empowered man, of the superman.
Legion remains and will remain a series of niches. Many have struggled to follow it, many did not understand it, many simply did not love it.
For those of us who have been there from the beginning it has been a beautiful and never heavy journey, a real drug from which it will be difficult to break away now that it is over.

Legion appartiene sicuramente a quest'ultima categoria.
Una serie per pochi, per pochissimi, nonostante si incastonasse nel genere più commerciale e di successo degli ultimi 10 anni, quello supereroistico.
Noah Hawley ha preso un supereroe potentissimo ma di nicchia come Legion e lo ha reso il protagonista del suo delirio creativo provando a scrivere e disegnare una serie complicata e diversa, originalissima.
Nel corso delle 3 stagioni abbiamo infatti assistito a pagine memorabili non solo della serialità ma dell'arte visiva tutta con sperimentazioni esagerate ed esasperate ma sempre funzionali a raccontare il vero delirio alla base della serie, il delirio del suo protagonista David.
Un supereroe potentissimo, devastante al quale è stato affidato un ruolo difficilissimo, quello di un uomo, un ragazzo alle prese con i suoi demoni. Per David la vera guerra era dentro di se ed il bellissimo episodio finale ci ha portati alla sua resa dei conti con la ricerca di una soluzione che non solo prevenisse la guerra dei mondi e la fine del tempo ma che soprattutto portasse pace alla sua anima e dunque alla sua eterna lotta con i propri mostri, rappresentati da Farouk fisicamente e metaforicamente.
Legion non aveva bisogno e non voleva raccontare di eroi in calzamaglia pronti a risolvere ogni crimine. Quello che Hawley voleva era mostrarci la fragilità e la complessità di un ragazzo che normale non è mai stato e che come tale non aveva problemi e dilemmi normali.
Ma David era un ragazzo, non un extraterrestre e come tale non aveva bisogno di soluzioni extraterrestri ma di una presa di coscienza tutta personale e del tutto umana.
Tra spezzoni musicali, elucubrazioni mentali, piani astrali, micromondi e supermondi, viaggi nel tempo, sdoppiamenti di personalità, personaggi assurdi, quello che è emerso è stato un dipinto straordinario sull'essere umano svestito dai panni dell'uomo potenziato, del superuomo.
Legion resta e resterà una serie di nicchia. In molti hanno fatto fatica a seguirla, molti non l'hanno capita, molti semplicemente non l'hanno amata.
Per noi che ci siamo stati sin dall'inizio è stato in viaggio bellissimo e mai pesante, una vera droga dalla quale sarà difficile distaccarsi ora che è finita.
