  1. Let Him Go, a modern western@ismaca682d

Director Thomas Bezucha's adaptation of Larry Watson's novel is a bleak but beautifully crafted ode to unconditional love and family ties.

From the icy opening frames, Bezucha masterfully immerses us in the snowy landscapes of Montana, where Diane Lane and Kevin Costner shine as a couple mourning the death of their son.

When they learn that their only grandchild is in danger at the hands of an outlaw family, the film exudes a raw intensity as their search brings out both their protective instincts and their long-buried wild side.

Lane delivers one of his finest performances, imbuing his character with a ferocity befitting his harrowing situation. Costner also remains as committed an onscreen partner as ever.

Bezucha raises tensions to unbearable levels in a finale that provides a catharsis earned through two hours of empathetic storytelling. Lesley Manville excels in a chilling antagonist role.

Let Him Go stands as a modern western that moves as much as it disturbs, a tribute to the loved ones for whose safety we would fight to the end of the world. A remarkably acted and filmed achievement.

Lesley Manville earned a well-deserved Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her grim villainess. She emerged victorious thanks to her terrifying intent.

At the box office, Let Him Go grossed over $19 million in the US against a budget of only $9 million.

  2. Фільм "Дозволь йому піти" ("Let Him Go"), 2020р.

Let Him Go is a dramatic movie about the clash of 2 families that are totally incompatible with each other. First, we have a regular family which is, by the way, quite small given the decade and the level of comfort they seem to have. The older man is a retired sheriff and despite the fact he and his wife own a large farm and horses, they only had 1 son.

Having only 1 child wasn't normal in those times, especially with marriages that had a stable economic situation. I think the lack of more children was decided to make everything that happens later even more dramatic.

Their son grows up, marriages, and then a baby boy is born. They all live on the farm and everything appears nice but then a major accident happens thanks to one of the horses and the lives of the family will change forever.

    Mini spoiler ahead...
what basically happens in the accident and ends up causing several severe consequences is that the older couple's son dies while riding a horse. With time, this will force his widow to settle for a new undesirable marriage.

After some time, the new young couple simply disappears without even saying goodbye. They go to live with the husband's family and when this new family comes into the picture is when the big problems begin. This is a family with a strange rural upbringing and constant hostile body language. They have a very domineering mother and since the beginning, it was clear they were capable of horrible acts.

The film is a strong drama with some violence but what I didn't like was that the movie sometimes seemed too crazy and unrealistic. It was well acted which made it worth watching but the writing of the story didn't convince me. In the end, this is a clash between 2 different families, one looking for the wellbeing of their loved ones and the other one just looking for control.

    The best

    • It was an entertaining drama.
    • Good performance from the cast.

    The worst

    • There were several unrealistic parts, such as the normal older couple having only 1 child, the super secluded house where the young marriage moved to, there is even the participation of an indigenous guy living alone in the mountains!
