Summing it all up, we will probably get a 3rd season.
So how do we evaluate season 2 compared to the first? At this point, I haven't asked my partner for her opinion, but apart from one actress and one thread from the end of the series, she probably thinks it's as good as the first one. As for me, I share her opinion about the actress, but my opinion is slightly different, I look at this thread with a more favorable eye. I agree that it was quite cheap and could have been replaced with something else. Apart from these 2 points, I liked it even more than the first one. This is a classic, well-made sequel - the creators accurately understood what we liked and got more of it.
The plot is a continuation of the first season. This time the main theme is leaky borders. Taylor Sheridan does not pretend to refer to current trends in immigration policy. I.e. excessively open doors through which not only poor people sneak, but also dangerous individuals who want to cause chaos in the USA. The game is about enormous amounts of money and can bring tangible benefits to the enemies of the world hegemon. The second season begins with Congresswoman being kidnapped and her family brutally murdered. The beginning is very impressive, as powerful as the opening action of season 1 in Syria. Subsequent episodes discuss the sale of drugs, trafficking in people and small children, sponsors of the above activities and complex international politics. The family storyline between Joe, her husband and their children is also back.
As for the new heroine... Well, I didn't like her at the beginning, but I didn't have warm feelings for the protagonist of the previous season either. She got it later and I figured it would be the same for Josie Carrillo (Genesis Rodriguez). Yes, Josie had a very cool entrance. Explosive, loud, well written. When this plan was being developed in the staff, I told Asia that we would see a nice show. She asked why, so I replied that she would see for herself in a few dozen minutes. It turned out better than I expected, it made me clap with surprise.
Unfortunately, with each subsequent episode, my enthusiasm gradually faded away. Not because of her character or her personal threads. I had the impression that she was there by accident. Just like a man who has lost his job, and therefore his livelihood, and has to choose the first job he finds. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a tragic role. If it weren't for a certain event preceding the finale, we probably wouldn't have assessed it so critically. There was simply material for a more interesting character here, even in the confrontation with the first lioness. There are some similarities between them, but many differences. For example, Josie is louder and has a seemingly stronger ego. Let's also not forget that she rose to her position in the army on her own. While an ordinary soldier could find himself there by accident, not a helicopter pilot. As for this "controversial thread", I don't want to reveal the details, so I will say this - Sheridan repeated the thread we know from season 1. The difference is that it came out naturally and it was easier for me to justify it. I tried here too, but my partner's arguments convinced me to partially change my mind.
Fortunately, this is the only problem we had with the actors. Well, one of the two, but I touched on both. Some actors got a little more airtime for themselves. We learned something new about Byron Westfield's (Michael Kelly) private life. To avoid spoilers, I will limit myself to saying that the family has to adapt to his work, and not the other way around. So just like in the case of Joe aka. Zoe Saldana, but I'll come back to her thread later. As for the rest of the male characters, apart from Byron and husband Joe, they were developed in a microscopic way. I don't see it as a disadvantage because they play specific roles - they are there to do the dirty work. Edwin Mullins (Morgan Freeman) is unlikely to appear in the next season, but he said goodbye to us in style. Additionally, the substantive arguments between him, Nicole Kidman and the rest of the secret services were as charming as in the first season. Why did I say "substantive arguments"? There's no other way to describe the alternation of sharp vulgarities and sensible arguments at the frequency of a machine gun.
In the first season, I praised mainly the female actresses and it's exactly the same here. If it weren't for one thread, or rather its ending, my partner and I wouldn't have had the slightest reservations. Not counting the thread I already mentioned. I don't want to reveal him either, because he is important to the plot, so I will say this - the same mistake was made as in action films. While there you can experience immortality and the murderous stamina of the hero or heroes, I expect a bit more from a production that focuses more on realism. It added a bit of drama, but it could have been done better. However, I appreciate that Taylor Sheridan didn't pull this thread out of nowhere and tried to justify it with a plot. Unfortunately, it only worked on paper.
I'll start with my favorite. Nicole Kidman and her conversation with her husband... Torture and taking over the actions of her soldiers and the services subordinated to her... She played so naturally that if someone told me that she was not an actress, but the head of some branch of the services, I would be inclined to take their word for it. She uses facial expressions and words perfectly, like a real Femme Fatale. I already wrote this during the previous season, but Nicole ages like wine. The actress is 57 years old this year, but she looks as if she was at least a decade younger. The impression is even stronger because the famous film Babygirl recently debuted, in which we see her in the role of Femme Fatale. Sure, it's mainly due to money and plastic surgery, but we're still talking about a nearly 60-year-old woman who has given birth to several children.
However, it is not beauty that plays the main role in Lioness. In this case, the most attractive thing is her brain and poker face. No matter what happens, Nicole's face is unfazed. It doesn't matter whether children or women are killed or people are tortured in front of her - she has to keep her balls of steel. It does it perfectly! Neither this nor last season, I saw a single moment where she lowered her guard. Apart from the moments when she can joke or have casual conversations with her friends or fellow soldiers, Kidman looks like the Ice Queen at all times. As much as I like to praise Sheridan, not all of his ideas are successful. This can be seen in this season of Lioness, season 5 of Yellowstone. However, there is something that he does very well in every series - showing love relationships. Starting from idealized ones, through loose relationships, or those that can be described as specific, ending with more or less normal ones (the relationship of hurt/sick people like Bet and her husband in Yellowstone or the relationship I will write about in a moment). You can see real emotions in each of them. This is quite an overused cliché, but in this case, it is absolutely accurate. The relationships between the characters are meaty. When they argue, you can see that their bodies are "in combat readiness" (tensed muscles, visible agitation in their eyes, raised voices), when they want to make love, their bodies emanate sexual energy. When they are happy, it shows. And I can go on and on. Sheridan's series don't have a monopoly on this, of course, but I don't see it in many of the series I watch with Asia.
As a blogger interested in pop culture, movies, TV series and the money they generate, I just see it. My partner, Asia, is usually not interested in such nonsense, because as she says, "it's your job." However, I see her lively reactions and deep involvement whenever we see the love/friends with benefits theme in Sheridan's series. In 2 he started showing his claws, at one point he had the last of his self-control to refrain from verbally fucking up his wife from top to bottom, as if she were a cheap prostitute (I mean that women doing this job for such an amount are often treated very badly). This argument, and Joe's reaction, once again reminded me why I love Sheridan's skills. I also remembered several conversations with my friends about relationships, arguments and dealing with difficult topics. I saw the exact same authenticity in other scenes. For example, how they used their free time from children to devote themselves to the most intimate affection that a couple can give to each other. Just the prose of life. Their plot is as great as Nicole Kidman and her husband.
I don't have much to say about the previous Lioness. He appears in the middle of the season and has a mission to fulfill. We don't learn anything new, it doesn't seem like there has been any change in her life. Even its plot wasn't particularly engaging. She was given a mission, she completed it, and she talked a little with her colleagues. That's all. She also didn't get many action scenes. It's a pity, I hope that in the next season her role will be a bit more developed.

Na ten moment jeszcze nie pytałem mojej partnerki o opinię, ale pomijając jedną aktorkę i jeden wątek z końcówki serialu, raczej ocenia go równie dobrze, co pierwszy. Jeśli o mnie chodzi, podzielam jej zdanie w kwestii aktorki, ale moja opinia się nieco różni, patrzę na ten wątek bardziej przychylnym okiem. Zgadzam się, że było to dość tanie i można było dać w to miejsce coś innego. Pomijając te 2 punkty, podobał mi się nawet bardziej niż pierwszy. To klasyczny, dobrze wykonany sequel - czyli twórcy trafnie odczytali, co nam się podobało i dostaliśmy tego więcej.
Fabuła jest kontynuacją pierwszego sezonu. Tym razem głównym wątkiem są nieszczelne granice. Taylor Sheridan nie udaje, że odwołuje się do obecnych trendów polityki imigracyjnej. Tj. nadmiernie otwartych drzwi, przez które przemykają nie tylko biedni ludzie, ale też niebezpieczne jednostki, którym zależy na wprowadzaniu chaosu w USA. Gra toczy się o gargantuiczne pieniądze oraz może przynieść wymierne korzyści wrogom światowego hegemona. Drugi sezon zaczyna się od porwania Congresswoman i brutalnego zamordowania jej rodziny. Początek jest bardzo efektowny, równie mocny co akcja otwierająca 1 sezon w Syrii. Kolejne odcinki poruszają temat sprzedaży narkotyków, handlu ludźmi i małymi dziećmi, sponsorów powyższych działalności oraz złożonej polityki międzynarodowej. Powrócił też lubiany przez nas wątek rodzinny między Joe, jej mężem i dziećmi.
Jeśli chodzi o nową bohaterkę... Cóż, nie polubiłem jej już na początku, ale protagonistkę poprzedniego sezonu również nie darzyłem ciepłymi uczuciami. Zdobyła je później i uznałem, że w przypadku Josie Carrillo (Genesis Rodriguez) będzie tak samo. Owszem, Josie miała bardzo fajne wejście. Wybuchowe, głośne, dobrze napisane. W momencie gdy opracowywano ten plan w sztabie, powiedziałem Asi że zobaczymy ładne show. Zapytała się dlaczego, więc odpowiedziałem że sama zobaczy za kilkadziesiąt minut. Wyszło to lepiej niż się spodziewałem, aż zaklaskałem z wrażenia.
Niestety z każdym kolejnym odcinkiem, mój entuzjazm stopniowo ulatywał. Nie z powodu jej charakteru, czy jej personalnych wątków. Miałem wrażenie, że znalazła się tam przez przypadek. Tak jak człowiek, który stracił pracę, a co za tym idzie, środki do życia i musi wybrać pierwszą lepszą robotę, jaką znajdzie. Nie zrozumcie mnie źle, nie była to tragiczna rola. Gdyby nie pewne wydarzenie poprzedzające finał, pewnie nie ocenilibyśmy jej tak krytycznie. Po prostu był tutaj materiał na ciekawszą postać, choćby przy konfrontacji z pierwszą lwicą. Są między nimi pewne podobieństwa, ale wiele je różni. Np. Josie jest głośniejsza i ma pozornie silniejsze ego. Nie zapominajmy też, że doszła do swojej pozycji w armii o własnych siłach. O ile zwykły żołnierz mógłby się tam znaleźć przypadkiem, to nie pilot śmigłowca. Jeśli chodzi o ten "kontrowersyjny wątek", to nie chcę zdradzić szczegółów, więc powiem tak - Sheridan powtórzył wątek, który znamy z 1 sezonu. Różnica jest taka, że tam wyszedł w naturalny sposób i łatwiej było mi go uzasadnić. Tutaj też próbowałem, ale argumenty mojej partnerki przekonały mnie do częściowej zmiany zdania.
Na całe szczęście, jest to jedyny problem, który nam doskwierał, jeśli chodzi o aktorów. No, jeden z dwóch, ale poruszyłem oba. Niektórzy aktorzy dostali nieco więcej czasu antenowego dla siebie. Bo trudno inaczej nazwać naprzemienne obrzucanie się ostrymi wulgaryzmami i sensownymi argumentami z częstotliwością karabinu maszynowego.
W pierwszym sezonie chwaliłem przede wszystkim żeńskie aktorki i tutaj jest dokładnie tak samo. Gdyby nie jeden wątek, czy właściwie jego finał, nie mielibyśmy z moją partnerką najmniejszych zastrzeżeń. Nie licząc wątku, o którym już wspomniałem. Jego również nie chcę zdradzić, bo jest ważny dla fabuły, więc powiem tak - popełniono ten sam błąd, co w filmach akcji. O ile tam można przeżyć nieśmiertelność i morderczą staminę bohatera lub bohaterów, o tyle od produkcji stawiającej bardziej na realizm, oczekuję nieco więcej. Dodało to trochę dramaturgii, ale można to było lepiej zrobić. Aczkolwiek doceniam, że Taylor Sheridan nie wyciągnął tego wątku znikąd i starał się to umotywować fabularnie. Niestety, to działało co najwyżej na papierze.

Aktorka w tym roku ma 57 lat, a wygląda jakby była młodsza przynajmniej o dekadę. Wrażenie jest tym mocniejsze, że niedawno temu zadebiutował głośny film Babygirl, w którym widzimy ją w roli Femme Fatale. Jasne, to głównie zasługa pieniędzy i operacji plastycznych, ale ciągle mówimy o blisko 60-letniej kobiecie, która urodziła kilka dzieci.
Jednakże to nie uroda gra główną rolę w Lioness. W tym przypadku, najatrakcyjniejszy jest jej mózg oraz twarz pokerzystki. Cokolwiek by się nie działo, twarz Nicole jest niewzruszona. Nie ważne, czy giną dzieci, kobiety, czy na jej oczach torturuje się ludzi - ona musi zachować jaja ze stali. Robi to idealnie! Ani w tym ani w poprzednim sezonie, nie zauważyłem ani jednego momentu, w którym obniżyłaby gardę. Pomijając momenty, w których może sobie pozwolić na żarty lub luźniejsze rozmowy z koleżankami lub kolegami z armii, Kidman przez cały czas wygląda jak Królowa Lodu. Koniecznie muszę zobaczyć film, za który dostała Oscara. Macie jakieś filmy do polecenia z jej udziałem?
Mimo, że lubię chwalić Sheridana, to nie wszystkie jego pomysły są udane. Widać to w tym sezonie Lioness, 5 sezonie Yellowstone. Jest jednak coś, co wychodzi mu bardzo dobrze w każdym serialu - pokazywanie związków miłosnych. Począwszy od takich wyidealizowanych, poprzez luźne relacje, czy takie które można określić jako specyficzne, skończywszy na mniej lub bardziej normalnych (związek skrzywdzonych / chorych ludzi jak Bet i jej mąż w Yellowstone lub związek, o którym zaraz Wam napiszę). W każdej z nich widać prawdziwe emocje. Jest to dość nadużywany frazes, ale w tym przypadku, jest jak najbardziej trafny. Relacje między bohaterami są mięsiste. Jak się kłócą, to widać że ich ciała są "w gotowości bojowej" (napięte mięśnie, widoczne w oczach wzburzenie, podniesiony głos), jak chcą się kochać, to ich ciała emanują seksualną energią. Jak są szczęśliwi, to widać to po wszystkim. I mogę tak wymieniać. Seriale Sheridan nie mają na to monopolu, to jasne, ale nie widzę tego w wielu serialach jakie oglądam z Asią.
Jako bloger interesujący się popkulturą, filmami, serialami oraz pieniędzmi jakie generują, po prostu to widzę. Moja partnerka, Asia, zazwyczaj nie interesuje się takimi bzdurami, bo jak to ona mówi "to twoja robota". Widzę natomiast jej żywe reakcje oraz głębokie zaangażowanie, gdy tylko widzimy wątek miłosny / friends with benefit w serialach Sheridana. Świecą się jej oczy, pochłania każdą scenę, smuci się gdy widzimy coś smutnego, raduje gdy zobaczyliśmy coś śmiesznego. Jasne, to nie tylko zasługa scenariusza, ale przypominam że Paramount dał bardzo dużą swobodę Taylorowi. Nieprzypadkowo jest producentem wykonawczym każdego z serialu i jednym z najważniejszych trybików w ich serwisie streamingowym. To taki Kevin Feige.
I dokładnie tak wygląda związek między Joe, a Nealem w Lioness. Tak jak napisałem w dwóch poprzednich akapitach. W S1 Neal był zbyt grzeczny i akceptował pracę swojej żony (nie zrozumcie źle moich słów - chodzi o nieracjonalne zachowanie Joe, które zaskakuje również jej przełożonych). W 2 zaczął pokazywać pazury, w pewnym momencie powstrzymał się resztką samokontroli przed werbalnym opierdoleniem swojej żony z góry na dół, jakby ta była tanią prostytutką (chodzi mi o to, że kobiety wykonujące ten zawód za taką kwotę, często są bardzo źle traktowane). Ta kłótnia i reakcja Joe, po raz kolejny przypomniała mi, za co uwielbiam umiejętności Sheridana. Przypomniałem sobie również kilka rozmów z koleżankami nt. związków, kłótni i radzenia sobie z trudnymi tematami. Dokładnie taką samą autentyczność widziałem przy innych scenach. Np. jak wykorzystywali wolne chwil od dzieci, by oddać się najintymniejszym czułościom, jakie para może sobie dać. Sama proza życia. Ich wątek jest równie świetny, co Nicole Kidman i jej serialowego męża.
O poprzedniej Lwicy nie mam zbyt dużo do powiedzenia. Pojawia się w połowie sezonu i ma do spełnienia pewną misję. Nie dowiedzieliśmy się nic nowego, nie wygląda na to, by w jej życiu zaszła jakaś zmiana. Nawet jej wątek nie był jakoś przesadnie wciągający. Dostała misję, zrealizowała ją, trochę porozmawiała z kolegami i koleżankami. To wszystko. Nie dostała też zbyt wielu scen akcji. Szkoda, mam nadzieję że w kolejnym sezonie jej rola będzie nieco bardziej rozbudowana.
Generalnie 2 sezon jest chyba lepszy, a przynajmniej tak póki go oceniamy. Przedwczoraj rozmawiałem z Asią o Lioness i służbach specjalnych, bo akurat oglądaliśmy film na YT o podobnej tematyce. Podtrzymuje swoją ocenę sprzed kilku tygodni i u mnie jest podobnie. Oceniam 2 sezon Lioness na +8/10.
