  1. Film Review: Lionheart (1990)@drax1367d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Perception of films is by its nature subjective. Single individual may remember a film for a reason that doesn’t mean anything to anybody else or, at least. most of other people. One example for the author of this review is provided by Lionheart, 1990 martial arts film directed by Sheldon Lettich. I remember it mostly for a single detail – rare opportunity to hear certain colourful phrases in familiar language spoken by minor character in Hollywood film.

Protagonist, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, is Lyon Gautier, French Foreign Legion soldier stationed in Djibouti. The plot begins when his drug dealing brother François (played by Ash Adams) gets set alight by certain unsavoury characters on the streets of Los Angeles. After hearing the news, Lyon wants to visit his brother, but his superiors deny his request for leave. Lyon decides to abandon his post, survives trek over desert and embarks as a stowaway on merchant ship that would get him to New York City. There he is wandering the streets penniless until he stumbles on the illegal street fight where participants win small amounts of money. He takes part and impresses small time promoter Joshua Eldrige (played by Harrison Page) who becomes his manager and gets him in touch with Cynthia (played by Deborah Rennard), rich organiser of illegal matches for the wealthy audience. Lyon reluctantly agrees to fight only to get ticket to Los Angeles. There he learns that François succumbed to his injuries and left his wife Helene (played by Lisa Pelikan) and young daughter Nicole (played by Ashley Johnson) destitute because of unpaid medical bills. Feeling remorse over not preventing his brother to become drug dealer, he decides to financially help his family and agrees to take part in more big fights for Cynthia. In the meantime, Foreign Legion sends two of its men – Sergeant Hartog (played by Voyo Goric) and Moustapha (played by Michel Qissi) – to track him down.

Lionheart was directorial debut for Sheldon Lettich, who also co-wrote the script with S. N. Warren and his good friend Van Damme. For Belgian martial arts star that was an opportunity to prove that can actually act. Lionheart, therefore, provided plot and much deeper character development than in previous films. The plot can look overly melodramatic or old-fashioned (which is even implicitly admitted in one line of dialogue that compares protagonist’s life to “old movie”), but it works. Van Damme’s acting skills are limited, but more than adequate for the role and he does solid job in creating character the audience can easily sympathise with. The script even allows a little bit of social commentary, confronting the world of decadent upper class elite that likes watching and betting on illegal fights with the homeless people on the street that include even little girl (played by Lettich’s daughter Michelin in cameo). Van Damme is surrounded by relatively unknown but solid cast among which Harrison Page stands out as as his motormouth mentor and friend. Van Damme, of course, delivers goods as martial arts star in series of fight scenes that feature different opponents, fighting styles and match venues. The final fight, in which he faces huge man called Attilla (played by Abdel Qissi), is somewhat underwhelming and protracted, but made interesting through clever use of pathos and melodrama. Lettich made film with relatively small budget, but, despite his directing skills leaving much to be desired, did decent job. The most annoying flaw of the film is too melodramatic music score by John Scott that is often used at wrong scenes, turning the film into unintentional parody.

Despite that, Lionheart is very entertaining film and one of the rare pieces of Van Damme’s filmography that shows his humane and sentimental side. It is also known as the first during which he bared his posteriors, creating something of a trademark that would be used in many of his subsequent films. Film was distributed under different titles in many parts of the world (A.W.O.L. was. For example, used in UK) and became big hit, further maintaining Van Damme’s status as one of the big actions stars of 1990s. In countries of former Yugoslavia Lionheart gained additional popularity due to presence of Serbian actor Voyo Goric who delivers small but memorable pieces of dialogue in his native language.

  2. Corazón de León... Peleador Sin Ley 1990 [Esp/Eng]@omarcitorojas1491d

Greetings my dear moviegoers. Today we are going to enjoy a film from the 90's, from one of the idols of the martial arts and action genre of the time. We are talking about Jean Claude Van Damme, an actor who we all know has been dedicated to delivering punches and kicks left and right. It is also true that this actor along with Stallone and Schwarzenegger, were the greats of the 90's in terms of action, and as they advanced in his career it was going from less to more.

On the other hand, let's highlight this particular Lionheart film, Lawless Fighter, because not only do you see fists and kicks, but there is a perfect combination of martial arts, action, and drama. I particularly like the movie, and that's why I bring it to you so you can watch it, I know it's a little old, but it's really good, and it's worthy to have it in our collection. I declare myself a fan of martial arts, and logically of Jean Claude Van Dame.

Lionheart is a 1990 film directed by Sheldon Lettich, who was also in charge of Double Impact and The Order, where Van Damme himself also participated. The script was under the pens of this director and Jean Claude. It had a budget of 6 million dollars, grossing a little over 24 million. This film is full of fights in bulk for all tastes, in addition to giving that emotional and dramatic touch that the actor brings, so that the film becomes something different from what Van Damme usually has us used to.

Certainly the film was not a box-office success, nor the actor had an exorbitant payment, however, it was one of the films with which Van Damme continued to rise, until 1991, when he was consecrated with the film Universal Soldier. As data about the actor, from 1979 to 1984 he got roles as an extra, until 1986, when he acted in the film Never Go Back, Never Surrender, and although his role was not a leading role, he acted as an antagonist character participating in key scenes as Ivan The Russian. In fact, since this film I have followed Van Damme's career. But the sacrifice and dedication for his work, took him to the first main role in 1988, when he played Frank Dux in Blood Sport, or Bloody Contact; it is also another of my favorites.

    Personajes

And we can't leave out the dangerous Abdel Qissi, who is the antagonist Attilla. This performance by Attilla is worth seeing, it's not worth telling, the film would lose all meaning.

This story opens with Leon Gaultier, who is serving in the French Foreign Legion in East Africa. Suddenly he receives a letter from his sister-in-law Helene, who asks him to return to Los Angeles to see her brother who is about to die, because of a drug deal gone wrong and was burned alive. This is where Van Damme's journey begins, I mean Leon, as his superiors refuse to let him retire from the Legion; however, Leon upon seeing the refusal, escapes across the desert until he reaches New York, but just as Leon got there, he is also besieged by agents sent by the Legion. Now, Leon has no money to travel to Los Angeles where his dying brother awaits him.

Suddenly Leon notices a street fight, and there he sees the opportunity to get money to move on. It is then when he fights, wins, and is observed by Joshua, a homeless man who later becomes his handler. From all this, Cynthia enters the scene, a snake in charge of managing clandestine fights for millionaires, always with his right hand Russell; Joshua and Leon are associated with the intention of taking them to Los Angeles after facing some fights. Then Leon arrives at his destination, he goes to the hospital, but it's too late, his brother is dead, there is no revenge because the criminals were arrested. Now the mission was another, to take care of his family, but Helene does not want any help. From here on things for Leon turn into fights, drama, and escape from the Legion; but I invite you to enjoy what is to come, because what you have read does not compare with the degree of emotion and emotionality of this film.

What attracts me the most in this film is that Van Damme, in his role as Leon Gaultier, is far from any kind of revenge, whose traditional mission would be to eliminate any villain in the plot. On the contrary, the actor limits himself to using what he knows how to do, which is to fight for a living and protect his sister-in-law and niece, even if she doesn't want him to. Another aspect is that there are no tournaments, but the fights are done clandestinely, and this makes the film more attractive. In short, fun and entertainment are guaranteed from beginning to end, since its script is framed in a correlativity and correct development, it has a plot, and a good theme.

From my point of view the fights are well done, a Van Damme doing his best with his techniques and heroism, developing a plot where he also had a hand in the script. In fact, this film for me, despite not being a box office success, is one of the best of this actor, and I'm sure it's on par with Kick boxing and Blood Sport. I enjoyed it, and enjoy it every time I watch it, and it is totally recommended for those who love action and martial arts. It is definitely a classic of classics, with a lot of emotion and drama. The ending you have to see, because it really goes beyond the desire to move forward, and the strength that can come after the betrayal of a friend.

    2021-04-23 16.59.08.png

    Lionheart-Wrong-Bet-A-W-O-L-Full-Contact-1990-jean-claude-van-damme-33365649-245-160.gif Fuente-Source

The characters, of course, some better achieved than others; however, in general terms we find Jean Claude Van Damme in full swing, with a vigorous youth performing one of his best roles, truly applying humanism, the feeling of family, and the imposition of his ability to get out of the most unbelievable situations. On the other hand, we notice Harrison Page as Joshua, in a fresh interpretation, a bit funny, and insistent to get ahead, without leaving aside his brilliance. But we can't forget the film's baddie, an ambitious, capricious woman, used to get what she wants. Of course, without the rest of the cast none of this would be possible; but as I said, some performances are above others.

    2021-04-23 16.59.08.png

There is no doubt, that Van Dame was by that time rising like the foam, the following film, from my point of view better than the other, not for nothing Universal Soldier finished catapulting him to the consecration. This film is worthy of being present in our list of movies of memory that we always want to see. Certainly the story told is very simple, but it is entertaining, besides, the combination of action, emotion, and drama, makes you stay glued to the screen from beginning to end; of course, everything is a matter of tastes and colors, but for lovers of this genre, you know that I am not saying anything against it. It only remains to give you a big hello, hoping you are motivated to enjoy a retro movie like this one. See you next time.

  3. Film Review: Lionheart (1987)@drax1537d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Franklin J. Schaffner was a very versatile director, but the films that earned him a place in film history books were “larger-than-life” epics like Planet of the Apes, Patton and Papillon. His penultimate film, 1987 historic adventure Lionheart, was supposed to be in the same league with those great hits, but its fate turned out to be quite different. Due to complicated set of business and other circumstances, Lionheart failed to got proper cinema distribution and was, for all practical purposes, relegated to “straight-to-video” status, ultimately making it unusually obscure title by someone with such high reputation as Schaffner.

The plot begins in Northern France during late 11th Century. Protagonist, played by Eric Stoltz, is Robert Nerra, young nobleman who has just been knighted and dreams of joining Third Crusade led by English king Richard the Lionheart. His father and suzerain Simon (played by Bruce Purchase) has different ideas and wants Robert to join him in campaign against neighbouring warlord. During the chaotic battle Richard’s beloved uncle and mentor Charles de Monfort (played by Nicholas Clay) gets killed and Robert, out of fear and disgust, leaves battlefield. He stumbles on Michael (played by Dexter Fletcher) and Blanche (played by Nicola Cowper), duo of renegade travelling entertainers, with whom he seeks shelter in nearby monastery and learns about Black Prince (played by Gabriel Byrne), disgruntled former crusader who turned to hunting down children and selling them as slaves to the same Muslims he had been fighting against, which is his personal vengeance against God. The band finds group of orphaned children in the city underground and Robert decides to protect them during the journey aimed at joining King Richard and his crusade.

Lionheart had some very respected names involved in production, which included Francis Ford Coppola and his sister Talia Shire. Schaffner used locations in Hungary and Portugal, which allowed use of medieval buildings for locations, as well as large number of extras from local orphanages, as well as young Hungarian circus artists. This allowed Lionheart, for the most part, to look like genuine historical epic, although cinematography by Alec Mills is at times too grey and not appealing for what was supposed to be recreation of interesting historical period. Schaffner, who had previous experience with medieval epics in The War Lord two decades earlier, directs effective combat scenes. But the best thing about this film and for some the only thing this film is known is the musical score by Schaffner’s friend and long-time collaborator Jerry Goldsmith, which ranks about the most effective and popular in his long and prolific career.

Unfortunately, such resources have been used for clearly subpar script. Dutch writer Menno Meyjes originally envisioned trilogy of film depicting with Crusades, with second part being dedicated to Richard the Lionheart’s famous opponent Saladin and depicting the era from Muslim point of view. The main inspiration for the plot was Children’s Crusade, the event that actually happened few decades later and had less happier ending than the one depicted in this film. There are, however, many details that would enrage scholars of medieval history, like Richard the Lionheart being named as “Richard II” instead of “Richard I”. While the lack of historical accuracy can be forgiven in what is in essence work of fiction, some other sloppy details can’t. This is mainly due to poor characterisation of Robert’s followers who appear too briefly to be properly introduced, and the obligatory romance between Robert and Blanche is ruined with lack of chemistry between Stoltz and Cowper. Another interesting character, tomboyish noblewoman and aspiring knight Mathilda (played by Deborah Moore) is introduced too late. Film has serious issues with pacing and simply runs too long, especially for younger viewers for whom it was obviously made. Casting also leaves much to be desired, with Stoltz being bland and uncharismatic and easily overshadowed by Byrne who plays very complex and believable villain. Adequate direction and Goldsmith’s music make this film watchable, but not enough to suppress disappointment among those who expected something more from director of Schaffner’s reputation.

Lionheart a good 1990 classic movie with the famous Jean-Claude Van Damme

**A short summary of this wonderful film creation** > *Lyon Gaultier (Van Damme) deserts from the Foreign Legion. Arriving in the States, he finds his dying brother and his wife without enough money to treat him. In order to get the money, Lyon decides to take part in a series of very dangerous clandestine fights.*

Ok! I just missed this movie and decided to watch it at least for the last time. This is a good movie, probably Van Damme's best film - the most exciting and at the same time the most conclusive for what this martial arts talent once meant.

A good greatest actor with a strong and interesting career.

**An exciting and engaging action film, in which drama, sensitivity and romance are exposed in a rather spectacular way. The film has as its main subject the struggle of life, in its many forms - I really liked this cinematic creation and if you are younger and this is the first time you have heard of this cinematic artistic title - i recommend it with confidence. It's not just a movie that splits fists and feet, it's a movie with an impressive story that enters your soul - i promise it won't disappoint you.**
