   Dopo la morte di Lynn Shelton, regista di molte serie tv di successo, parlare di Little Fires Everywhere ha assunto connotati più solenni. A pochi giorni dal finale è arrivata questa tremenda notizia. Con questo posto vorrei ricordare la Shelton parlando della sua creatura più giovane e di successo.

   Little Fires Everywhere, più di ogni altra serie, è nettamente divisa in 2 fasi: la prima è un atto di fede nei confronti della seconda. Superato lo "scoglio" dei primi 3/4 episodi, infatti, essa è capace di regalare solo e soltanto gioie allo spettatore, non perchè i primi episodi siano brutti ma perchè sono compassati, poco digeribili e poco "nuovi" ma fondamentali per delineare i tratti caratteristici delle protagoniste in modo da farli emergere in maniera esplosiva nella seconda parte di stagione. Essi sono anche essenziali alla costruzione della storia che decollerà nella seconda parte della miniserie di Hulu. Ecco perchè, resistendo alla tentazione di abbandonare lo show, si viene ampiamente ripagati della fiducia concessagli. La seconda parte di stagione è un crescendo che raramente abbiamo visto in una serie debuttante. La drammaticità è imponente, le scelte per le protagoniste si fanno sempre più difficili, la coerenza narrativa è solida, lo sviluppo dei personaggi inesorabile.

   Sono propri i personaggi a rappresentare il grande punto di forza di Little Fire Everywhere. Il casting è stato notevole rispetto ai tanti adolescenti coinvolti nelle riprese, in particolare i giovani attori che interpretano Izzy e Pearl. Le 2 giovani attrici hanno dato grande prova di sè dimostrando di essere molto, molto promettenti. Non vi è dubbio che sentiremo parlare di entrambe ancora a lungo. Joshua Jackson è stato molto in ombra, quasi un comprimario, ma per sua (e nostra) fortuna il suo personaggio non è risultato piatto e monodimensionale, seppur schiacciato dal peso delle 2 mirabili protagoniste. Tutti i personaggi "secondari" hanno dovuto fare i conti con il lavoro eccezionale di Reese Whiterspoon e Kerry Washington, risultate semplicemente fenomenali. Il loro contributo è stato fondamentale per la buona riuscita della serie, uno di quei casi in cui una serie ha trovato giovamento dalle sue interpreti, senza le quali, probabilmente non avrebbe avuto lo stesso impatto. Entrambe sono state il volto di 2 facce di una medaglia per niente uguale ma che ha saputo raccontare l'America e il sogno Americano, attraverso le loro storie e attraverso quei sobborghi "bene" di cui gli Stati Uniti erano zeppi allora e sono zeppi adesso. Negli anni '90 la questione razziale era ancora molto presente (non che ora non lo fosse), sottaciuta in determinanti ambienti e proprio per questo ancora più esplosiva. Dietro gli slogan, pregni di tolleranza e rispetto, c'era ancora la resistenza e l'odio dell'uomo bianco verso quello "nero", fatto di piccoli gesti, come il proteggere la borsetta al passaggio dell'uomo "nero" o come il non riconoscere pari diritti e dignità a chi avesse la pelle di un colore diverso dal proprio.

   La questione dell'abbandono di May Ling, nella serie, ha fatto esplodere tutte le contraddizioni interne di Shaker e dell'America stessa, un America tutta sorrisi, addobbi e strette di mano, dietro le quali si sono sempre nascoste, e ancora si nascondono, reminiscenze ataviche di superiorità e mal tolleranza verso il diverso La spietatezza, il cinismo, il razzismo di Elena si è scontrato contro la forza, la determinazione, la carica, il vissuto di una donna come Mia. Pearl ha rappresentato il pomo della discordia, il boomerang che è stato lanciato da entrambe e che ha colpito, di ritorno, entrambe ma che ha finito per ferire solo Elena, rafforzando, di contrappasso, Mia. Ma Little Fires Everywhere oltre ad essere una storia sull'ipocrisia è anche una storia sul coraggio, sul dolore. Il dolore di Pearl, ignara dell'enorme dramma, dell'enorme scelta fatta dalla madre all'epoca della sua nascita. Quello di Izzy, una nota stonata nella famiglia che Elena vorrebbe disegnare, la classica percora nera che nessuna famiglia di quel tipo, di quel rango vorrebbe avere dentro le proprie mura. Quello di Elena stessa, convinta di aver sacrificato troppo per quei 4 figli.

   Il dolore di ogni singolo componente della famiglia, troppo spesso sotto pressione per cercare di essere sempre al meglio, sempre meglio per accontentare Elena, per garantire quegli standard di apparenza dietro la quale, spesso, si nasconde un vuoto tremendo.

   Elena è il cancro che infetta tutti, che rende tutti, in un modo o nell'altro malati, tutti talmente doloranti da desiderare un nuovo inizio, lontano da lei, lontano da tutto. Un nuovo inizio simboleggiato perfettamente dal fuoco, che tutto brucia ma che è capace anche di generare nuova vita, nascente da un terreno oramai raso al suolo ma più fertile e simbolico di una tabula rasa dalla quale poter risorgere come Fenici. Ed ecco che è il dolore di Mia, seppur sempre mai troppo urlato e drammatizzato, ad essere il dolore più grande e più significativo. Donna amata ma rimasta sola a causa di 2 lutti enormi e ravvicinati. Donna ripudiata dalla sua stessa famiglia. Donna in fuga per proteggere l'unico anello di congiunzione fra lei ed il mondo. Da quell'immenso dolore, da quella terra bruciata intorno a se nasce una nuova donna, capace di vivere una nuova vita, sotto nuovo nome e nuove spoglie ma forse ancor più forte di prima.

   Non è forse questo il femminsimo? Non è proprio questa l'emancipazione? Non è proprio questo l'esempio di una donna, per di più afroamericana, indipendente, orgogliosa, forte e senza limiti? Ci sono momenti speciali che fanno di Little Fires Everywhere una grandissima serie tv, una serie tv che lascia dentro qualcosa, che appassiona e che, come solo le migliori serie tv sanno fare, hanno la capacità di emergere e raccontare qualcosa che va oltre la stessa storia messa in scena.

   After the death of Lynn Shelton, director of many successful TV series, talking about Little Fires Everywhere has taken on more solemn connotations. A few days before the finale came this terrible news. With this review I'll try to split the 2 things remembering Shelton but talking about her creature.

   Little Fires Everywhere, more than any other series, is clearly divided into 2. Overcome the "rock" of the first 3/4 episodes it can only give joy. Not because the first episodes are bad but because they're compassionate, undigestible and not "new". However, they are essential to the construction of the story that will take off in the second part of Hulu's miniseries. That's why, resisting the temptation to leave the show, the show largely repays the trust. The second part of the season is a crescendo that we have rarely seen in a debut series. The drama is impressive, the choices become more and more difficult, the narrative coherence is solid, the development of the characters powerful. And the characters are the great strength of Little Fire Everywhere. The casting was remarkable with all the teenagers involved, especially the young actors playing Izzy and Pearl, who showed great promise. Joshua Jackson was very shadowy but not flattened. All these characters, however, had to come to terms with the exceptional work of Reese Whiterspoon and Kerry Washington, who were simply phenomenal. Their contribution was fundamental to the success of the series. Both of them were the face of 2 sides of a medal that was not at all the same but that talked about America and the American dream. In the '90s the racial issue was still very much felt. Behind the slogans there was still the white man's resistance and hatred towards the black man, made of small gestures like protecting the handbag when the black man passed by or not recognizing equal rights and dignity to those who had a skin color different from white. The issue of May Ling's abandonment has exploded all the internal contradictions of Shaker and America itself. Elena's ruthlessness, cynicism and racism clashed against the strength, determination, charge and experience of a woman like Mia. Pearl was the apple of discord, the boomerang that was launched by both but ended up hurting only Elena, strengthening Mia. But Little Fires Everywhere is not only a story about hypocrisy but also a story about courage, about pain. The pain of Pearl, unaware of the enormous drama, of the enormous choice made by her mother at the time of her birth. The one of Izzy, a discordant note in the family that Elena would like to draw. Elena's own, convinced that she sacrificed too much for those 4 children. The pain of every single member of the family, too often under pressure to try to be always the best, always better to please Elena. Elena is the cancer that makes everyone sick, all so painful that they want a new beginning. A new beginning perfectly symbolized by fire, which burns everything but is also capable of generating new life, rising from a ground now razed to the ground but more fertile. And here it is Mia's pain, even if never too much screamed and blurred, that is the greatest and most significant pain. A woman loved but left alone because of 2 huge and close mourns. Woman repudiated by her own family. Woman on the run to protect the only link between her and the world. From that immense pain, from that scorched earth around her, a new woman is born, capable of living a new life, under a new name and in new disguise but perhaps even stronger than before. There are special moments that make Little Fires Everywhere a great TV series. To remember.

   Little Fires Everywhere is the name of a brand new Hulu original series. It stars Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, two moms with very different backgrounds and a very different way of living.

   

   The first season of Little Fires Everywhere consists of eight episodes in total, and they each last for about 60 minutes. I have seen the first two episodes, so I will share my thoughts about Little Fires Everywhere based on the first two episodes.

   What is Little Fires Everywhere about?

   Reese Witherspoon is the mum in a house with 4 kids. Three are what you would call normal, while the fourth is a rebellious kid who has a hard time connecting with her mum and with the rest of her siblings. She dresses in a strange way, and she is causing a lot of trouble for her mum. Still, this is a perfect family (seen from the outside) and they live in a fantastic home that many would consider looking like a palace.

   Kerry Washington plays the role of a single mum. They arrive in the city where the character of Reese Witherspoon's family lives, and Reese Witherspoon shows great kindness towards the newcomers, even though Kerry Washington and her character behaves quite rudely.

   In the end, Kerry starts to work in the house of Reese Witherspoon and they rent a flat owned by the character of Reese Witherspoon. In other words, their lives are sewn together in a very close way.

   Is it healthy? Will this make things turn better for everyone? Or is this new relationship going to cause trouble?

   And what is it with the fire in the house? After all, the first episodes start with us all seeing the house of the Reese Witherspoon family burn to the ground, and many people believe that it is her troubled 11-year old daughter who is to blame.

   Is Little Fires Everywhere worth watching?

   It is always interesting with shows in which you know where it all leads, but you are discovering step by step how they got there, and you might also get clues to who did it, why they did it, and so on... but you never really know before you get to the point at which you saw a clip earlier.

   The story is built up in a good way, and it is interesting to see the story develop, and to see all the positives and negatives of the two families we follow so closely.

   My thoughts on Little Fires Everywhere!

   I haven't received an adrenaline kick from the show, but I guess that isn't what it is about either. But, the show has managed to make me curious, and I look forward to the future six episodes to see how the story will move on. It is a perfect drama, and I believe that especially women will enjoy this show. At least that is what happened in my home (my wife really enjoys the show).

   Where to watch Little Fires Everywhere?

   Currently, you can watch it on Hulu in the United States. I don't know of any other place where you can watch Little Fires Everywhere at the moment (except for pirate sites like Flixtor), but it might get to streaming services like HBO GO/HBO in Europe, SKY in the UK, and other similar services in the future.

   Hulu. Write this name down. Many of you will know this streaming platform, many won't. Know that it is a streaming platform available, in America, also in the Disney + package. In Italy not yet but it will probably arrive soon. Let's hope so because Hulu is churning out great products one after the other. Just think that one of his first products and first huge success was The Handmaid's Tale. One of the best TV series in the last 5 years to make a long story short. Nowadays many people say that the best news of the year is Hulu's birth, together with another product (High Fidelity) of great hopes. We're talking about:

   Little Fires Everywhere

   The full view of the pilot offers great sensations even if, by all accounts, it will be the development of the story in the next 8 episodes that will surprise you. For now it is undeniable that it is a series with great potential and especially with a stellar cast and in great shape. It only takes a few minutes to understand that the triptych Reese Whiterspoon - Kerry Washington - Joshua Jackson is a total guarantee. Seeing is believing. Everything starts from a fire, huge, devastating. The rest is a flashback. Where will it take us?

   

   Hulu. Segnatevi questo nome. Molti voi la conosceranno questa piattaforma streaming, molti no. Sappiate che è una piattaforma streaming disponibile, in America, anche nel pacchetto Disney +. In Italia non ancora ma probabilmente arriverà presto. Speriamo che sia cosi perchè Hulu sta sfornando grandi prodotti uno dopo l'altro. Basti pensare che uno dei suoi primi prodotti e primo enorme successo fu The Handmaid's Tale. Una delle migliori serie tv degli ultimi 5 anni per farla breve. Ecco che oggi in molti dicono che la migliore novità dell'anno sia proprio partorità da Hulu, insieme ad un altro prodotto (High Fidelity) di grandi speranze. Stiamo parlando di:

   La visione completa del pilot offre ottime sensazioni anche se, a detta di tutti, sarà lo sviluppo della storia nelle 8 puntate successive a sorprendervi. Per adesso è innegabile che sia una serie con grandissimo potenziale e soprattutto con un cast stellare ed in grandissima forma. Bastano pochi minuti per capire che il trittico Reese Whiterspoon - Kerry Washington - Joshua Jackson sia una totale garanzia. Vedere per credere. Tutto parte da un incendio, enorme, devastante. Il resto è un flashback. Dove ci porterà?
