I hadn't heard of this movie until a couple of weeks ago when a friend included it among her all-time favorite movies. Of course the first thing I thought of was the Tim Burton movie called Big Fish, which is one of my favorite films ever, and that association in the title added to the validation of my friend and the fact that the movie stars Olivia Cooke were reasons enough tfor me to see it.
No había escuchado de esta película hasta que hace un par de semanas una amiga la incluyó entre sus películas favoritas de siempre. Por supuesto que lo primero que pensé fue en la película de Tim Burton llamada Big Fish, la cual es una de mis cintas favoritas, y esa asociación en el título sumada a la validación de mi amiga y a el hecho de que la cinta es protagonizada por Olivia Cooke fueron razones suficientes para querer verla.
Little Fish has an unusual mix of genres: drama, romance, science fiction and, if you will, it's a little apocalyptic. In more ways than one it is thematically related to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, another of my favorite films and one that I consider one of the best in the history of cinema, but the main connection is that struggle between love and oblivion. In that story, starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, the characters voluntarily undergo a medical intervention that erases their memories. One does it out of spite and the other out of revenge, but in the middle of the intervention he regrets it and we see how his subconscious fights to preserve the memory of the loved one. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. The fact is that in Little Fish this forgetting is neither voluntary nor domestic: a global pandemic is the cause of people starting to forget things and logically there is no cure for that condition. That is to say, people are inevitably heading towards oblivion, as if all human beings, some faster, others slower, some now and others later, suffered from Alzheimer's. In that context, when Jude begins to have symptoms of the condition, he and his wife Emma (Cooke) do everything in their power not to forget each other.
Little Fish tiene una mezcla inusual de géneros: drama, romance, ciencia ficción y, si se quiere, es un poco apocalíptica. En más de un sentido guarda relación temática con Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, otra de mis películas favoritas y de las que considero de las mejores de la historia del cine, pero la principal conexión es esa lucha entre el amor y el olvido. En aquella historia, protagonizada por Jim Carrey y Kate Winslet, los personajes se someten voluntariamente a una intervención médica que les borra los recuerdos. Una lo hace por despecho y el otro por venganza, pero en medio de la intervención se arrepiente y vemos cómo su subconsciente lucha por conservar la memoria de la persona amada. Si no la han visto, se las recomiendo. El caso es que en Little Fish este olvido no es voluntario, ni doméstico: una pandemia mundial es la causa de que las personas comiencen a olvidar las cosas y lógicamente no hay cura contra esa condición. Es decir, las personas se dirigen irremediablemente al olvido, como si todos los seres humanos, unos más rápido, otros más lento, unos ahora y otros después, padecieran de alzheimer. En ese contexto, cuando Jude empieza a tener los síntomas de la condición, él y su esposa Emma (Cooke) hacen todo lo que está en sus manos para no olvidarse el uno al otro.
At the outset I have to say that the film focuses above all on the small universe of the protagonists. That is to say, although it shows a little of how the pandemic has affected the country and the world, that description sometimes seems insufficient to convey the sense of urgency and catastrophe that should reign throughout the globe. Because it is not only that people can forget their name at any time, but they can also forget everything they know and what they have learned throughout their lives.
De entrada tengo que decir que la película se concentra sobre todo en el pequeño universo de los protagonistas. Es decir, si bien muestra un poco de qué forma la pandemia ha afectado al país y al mundo, esa descripción a veces parece insuficiente para transmitir el sentido de urgencia y de catástrofe que debería reinar en todo el globo. Porque no es sólo que las personas puedan olvidar su nombre en cualquier momento, sino que también pueden olvidar todo lo que saben y lo que han aprendido durante toda su vida.
How can you take a flight if the pilot can forget how to fly at any moment? how to return home? There are many possibilities that could have been exploited at a macro level (I wonder what Saramago would have done with this story?), but that does not detract from the script because it develops emotion very well at a local level, that is, in that small world. of the protagonist couple whose situation leads us to ask ourselves, can love defeat oblivion? Human relationships are made up of experiences that, over time, become memories, but what happens if we start to forget those things? If I forget my wife's name, but remember everything else, I may feel a little frustrated, but what if I also forget our wedding? Or if I forget the fact that I am married? What can a person feel and think if one day they wake up next to a stranger who turns out to be the love of their life whom they do not remember? The theme of memory and forgetting has been discussed in many stories, but in addition to the one mentioned previously, I think Memento is another great film that addresses the issue, only in Nolan's film it is about a single person, while in Little Fish the problem is literally everyone's, so somehow people now must face two inevitable endings: oblivion (because forgetting who you are is a kind of closure) and death. It's not a hopeful outlook, but Emma and Jude try everything to save their memories in the name of love.
¿Cómo puedes tomar un vuelo si el piloto puede olvidarse de cómo volar en cualquier momento? ¿cómo volver a casa? son muchas las posibilidades que pudieron haberse explotado a nivel macro (me pregunto ¿qué habría hecho Saramago con esta historia?), pero eso no le resta méritos al guión porque desarrolla muy bien la emotividad a nivel local, es decir, en ese pequeño mundo de la pareja protagonista cuya situación nos lleva a preguntarnos, ¿puede el amor vencer al olvido? Las relaciones humanas están compuestas de vivencias que, con el paso del tiempo, se transforman en recuerdos, pero ¿qué pasa si comenzamos a olvidar esas cosas? Si olvido el nombre de mi esposa, pero recuerdo todo lo demás, me puedo sentir algo frustrado, pero ¿y si olvido también nuestra boda? ¿o si olvido el hecho de estar casado? ¿qué puede una persona sentir y pensar si un día despierta junto a un extraño que resulta ser el amor de su vida a quien no recuerda? El tema de la memoria y el olvido ha sido tratado en muchas historias, pero además de la mencionada previamente, creo que Memento es otra gran película que aborda el tema, sólo que en el film de Nolan se trata de una sola persona, mientras que en Little Fish el problema es literalmente de todo el mundo, así que de alguna forma las personas ahora deben enfrentarse a dos finales inevitables: el olvido (porque olvidar quien eres es una especie de cierre) y la muerte. No es un panorama esperanzador, pero Emma y Jude intentan de todo para salvar sus memorias en nombre del amor.
The script is interesting and although it owes a lot to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it is an unusual story, told with non-linear time that adds dynamism to the plot. The cinematography is well done and the performances are convincing. In addition, the theme of the pandemic gives it a very If the World Was Ending by JP Saxe and Julia Michaels kind of vibe, it's the love of a couple fighting the apocalypse, and the fact that it was released in 2020, precisely the year in that the CoVid-19 pandemic shook the world makes me think that seeing it now, after those events, makes us feel the story a little more. Finally, and a detail that is not minor, I liked the ending. The last sequence is a scene that leaves you thinking and makes you re-evaluate the entire story and that is appreciated. El guión es interesante y aunque le deba mucho a Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, es una historia poco común, contada con un tiempo no lineal que le agrega dinamismo a la trama. La fotografía está bien hecha y las actuaciones son convincentes. Además, el tema de la pandemia le da una vibra muy If the World Was Ending de JP Saxe y Julia Michaels, es el amor de una pareja luchando contra el apocalipsis, y el hecho de que se haya estrenado en 2020, precisamente el año en que la pandemia del CoVid-19 sacudió al mundo me hace pensar que verla ahora, después de esos eventos, nos hace sentir la historia un poco más. Finalmente y un detalle que no es menor, me gustó el final. La última secuencia es una escena que te deja pensando y que te hace volver a evaluar toda la historia y eso se agradece. Así que si te gustan las películas románticas, los dramas, las historias del fin del mundo, el cine independiente o las películas de ciencia ficción, creo que puedes disfrutar Little Fish, ¿alguno de ustedes la ha visto?
