To many viewers these days practice of adult cast playing teen character might seem awkward. This apparently didn’t bother audiences a century ago. Adult actors played child characters and some of those actors were actually the greatest stars of their time. An example can be found in The Little Princess, 1917 silent film directed by Marshall Neillan.

The film is the first adaptation of A Little Princess, 1905 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which was one of the most popular works of children’s literature in first decades of 20th Century. Protagonist, played by Mary Pickford, is Sara Crewe, 8-year old daughter of Captain Crewe (played by Norman Kerry), British Army officer stationed in Bombay. She reluctantly leaves her home when father sends her to Minchin boarding school in London. There she receives preferential treatment by Miss Minchin (played by Katherine Griffin) because she considers Captain Crewe to be a wealthy man. While other girls call her “Little Princess”, she nevertheless befriends Becky (played by ZaSu Pitts), girl who works as a servant for Miss Minchin. Everything changes after Sara learns that her father died and left her penniless after failed business with diamond mines. Miss Minchin makes her servant and subjects her to same abuse suffered by Becky. Sara and Becky would, however, escape their predicament with the help of kind neighbour Mr. Carrisford (played by Gustav von Seiffertitz).

During the production of The Little Princess Mary Pickford has already built reputation of one of the first major Hollywood stars and earned nickname “America’s Sweetheart”. She maintained reputation by series of films in which she played child characters. There, just like in The Little Princess, she used her unusually short stature as a way to create such illusion, but true ingredient of her success was her irresistible charm. She uses it to help the film during the scenes that would wreck similar film with different actress – a “film within a film” based on Sara’s retelling of Arabian Nights story about Ali Baba. Segment in which Pickford plays a slave is unusual because of violence that includes decapitation and stabbing, which would look a little awkward for film which is supposed to be made for family audience. Things nevertheless improve in the last part, when Pickford is paired by ZaSu Pitts, much taller actress who would later establish career of successful comedienne lasting late into the sound era. Pitts and Pickford have excellent chemistry together, which isn’t surprising because both actresses were good friends in real life. The Little Princess works sufficiently well as combination of melodrama, mild humour and period fantasy. Two decades later it was remade with sound and in colour starring Shirley Temple.
