"The first Venezuelan movie I saw..."
"Pequeña Revancha" (Little Revenge), a Venezuelan film released in 1985, directed by Olegario Barrera, who also wrote the script with Laura Antillano, based on the short story "La Composición" by Chilean writer Antonio Skármeta. This film tells the story of a boy named "Pedro", who lives in a very rural town full of humble and very united people, Pedro's family is composed by him and his parents, the three of them live in a quiet house where they raise goats, Pedro's life is about playing with his friends, helping his mother with her household chores and going to school, but while Pedro is growing his curiosity is also growing and this leads him to want to find out what his parents are doing with the other neighbors at night when no one is watching.

Hola Hivers, ya estamos en la segunda semana de la cuarta edición de League of Movies creada por @wiseagent, en esta oportunidad el tema para participar es "Roots", los que quieran participar deberán hacer una reseña de algún film que represente el país de donde provienen, es como dice que el creador de la liga, un tema patriótico y personal. "La primera película venezolana que vi..."
"Pequeña Revancha" (Little Revenge), película venezolana estrenada en el año 1985, dirigida por Olegario Barrera, quien también escribiría el guion junto a Laura Antillano, la cual está basada en el cuento "La Composición" del escritor chileno Antonio Skármeta. En esta película se cuenta la historia de un niño llamado "Pedro", quien vive en un pueblo muy rural lleno de gente humilde y muy unida, la familia de Pedro la compone él junto a sus padres, ellos tres viven en una casa tranquila donde crían chivos y su vida va en jugar con sus amigos, ayudar a su madre en los quehaceres de su hogar e ir a la escuela, pero mientras Pedro va creciendo su curiosidad también lo hace y esto lo lleva a querer averiguar que hace sus padres con los demás vecinos en horas de la noche cuando nadie está vigilando.
This is not only the first film I saw made in my country but possibly my first film within the genre "Coming of Age", this was one of those stories I could see with my parents every time it was broadcast on national channels, we sat down and enjoyed such a good story with a message of friendship, courage, family and loyalty, I liked to see a group of children doing children's things and that from the curiosity began to discover things of how to be an adult, but without losing the innocence, but in "Pequeña Revancha" not everything is focused on the adventures and occurrences of a group of children, the adult part must face the sad situation of living in a military dictatorship, even though this film is based on a story created by a Chilean writer, I think it is very universal in Latin America where at any time of the existence of the different countries that make it up have lived a military dictatorship, that's why even though this film made in Venezuela, the country itself is not named and neither is the country of the people and for me it is a reference to the badly common situation they have lived or live in this side of the world.
Esta no es solamente la primera película que vi hecha en mi país sino que posiblemente fue mi primera película dentro del género "Coming of Age", esta fue una de esas historias que pude ver con mis padres cada momento que la transmitían en los canales nacionales, nos sentábamos y disfrutamos de tan buena historia con un mensaje de amistad, valor, familia y lealtad, me agradaba ver a un grupo de niños hacer cosas de niños y que desde la curiosidad se empezaba a descubrir cosas de cómo ser adulto, pero sin perder la inocencia, pero en "Pequeña Revancha" no todo está enfocado en las aventuras y ocurrencias de un grupo de niños, la parte adulta debe hacer frente a la situación triste de vivir en una dictadura militar, a pesar de que este film es basado en un cuento creado por un escritor chileno, creo que es muy universal en Latinoamérica en donde en cualquier momento de la existencia de los diferentes países que la conforman han vivido una dictadura militar, es por eso que a pesar de que este film hecho en Venezuela, no se nombra al país en sí y tampoco al del pueblo y para mí es una referencia a la malamente común de esta situación en este lado del mundo.
What I liked most as a child and now as an adult I value more is the story of "Pedro" and his friends, this is a part that I could calmly feel they were telling part of my childhood, playing baseball or football with my friends, learning to ride a bike, falling in love with the prettiest girl in my school, coming to my house to do my homework, help and wait for my parents to arrive from their jobs, what this character does and lives in this story was what I lived, that's why these very young actors with their naturalness doing childish things make their work very credible.
Lo más me gustó de niño y ahora de adulto valora más es la historia de "Pedro" y sus amigos, esta es una parte que tranquilamente pudiera sentir que estaban contando parte de mi niñez, jugar béisbol o fútbol con mis amigos, aprender a andar en bicicleta, enamorarme de la niña más bonita de mi escuela, llegar a mi casa hacer la tarea, ayudar y esperar a que llegaran mis padres de sus trabajos, lo que hace y vive este personaje en esta historia era lo que yo vivía, es por eso que estos muy jóvenes actores con su naturalidad haciendo cosas de niños se les hace muy creíble su trabajo.
The direction work of Olegario Barrera, is excellent, I like how he does many shots to show the beauty and tranquility of living in those rural villages, those plains that we see in my country, the silence can give calm in those places, but the abrupt noise can be indicative of problems and that is also part of this film, I like the scenes of Pedro and his family, whether it's conversations with his parents or the final scene which for me is my favorite, that union and respect is what I feel for my parents, that of sharing any moment whether it's sitting in front of the TV or listening to the radio.
El trabajo de dirección de Olegario Barrera, es excelente, me gusta de como hace muchas tomas para mostrar la belleza y tranquilidad de vivir en esos pueblos rurales, ese esos llanos que vemos en mi país, el silencio puede dar calma en esos lugares, pero el abrupto ruido puede ser indicativo de problemas y eso también es parte de este film, me gustan las escenas de Pedro y su familia, sea con conversaciones con sus padre o madre o la escena final que para mí es mi favorita, esa unión y respeto es la que yo siento por mis padres, esa de compartir cualquier momento así sea sentado al frente de la tv o escuchando la radio.
For me this film is special, in the following years there were many films focused on violence and showing / exploiting that image of my country, a real and sad image, but that's exactly why I always think of "Pequeña Revancha " as a great representative of my country and Latin America, a story created in the 60's, published a long time later and that unfortunately is still current and I do not speak for the part of being a child and trying to do things appropriate to that age, but that countries like mine live totalitarian governments where parents must take care what they say or what values they follow so as not to leave their children alone or people must flee to other places to maintain their freedom.
Para mí esta película es especial, en los años siguientes hubo muchas películas enfocadas en violencia y mostrar /explotar esa imagen de mi país, una real, pero justamente es por eso que siempre pienso en "Pequeña Revancha" como un gran representativo de mi país y de Latinoamérica, una historia creada en los 60’, publicada mucho tiempo después y que lamentablemente sigue siendo actual y no hablo por la parte de ser niño y tratar de hacer cosas adecuadas a esa edad, si no que países como el mío viven gobiernos totalitarios donde los padres deben cuidar que dicen o que valores siguen para no dejar solos a sus hijo o personas deben huir hacia otros sitios para mantener su libertad.
This was the first Venezuelan film to be nominated for the Goya Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but it also received a large number of awards not only in national and Latin American festivals, but also in Europe, were awarded in countries like Spain, Germany, Italy and France, As you can see this great film with much humility and with the desire to tell an excellent story made my country recognized in many other places, without the need to be violent or exaggerated on another subject, just show complicated issues such as the dictatorship and the people who face it, all from the point of view of a child growing up with naivety and with the desire to play and live as he has always done protected by his parents. I tried to get a version with English subtitles so that many people could see it but I couldn't find it, anyway I will leave you a link so that you can enjoy this wonderful story made by Venezuelans 35 years ago, "Pequeña Revancha".
Este fue el primer film venezolano nominado a los al Premio Goya como Mejor film extranjero de habla hispana, pero también recibió un gran número de premios no solo en festivales nacionales y de Latinoamérica, sino también en Europa, fueron premiados en países como España, Alemania, Italia y Francia, como pueden observar este gran film con mucha humildad y con ganas de contar una excelente historia hizo que mi país fuera reconocido en muchos otros lugares, sin necesidad de ser violenta o exagerada en otro tema, solo mostrar temas complicados como la dictadura y de las personas que le hacen frente, todo desde el punto de vista de un niño creciendo con ingenuidad y con ganas de jugar y vivir como siempre lo ha hecho protegido por sus padres. Trate de conseguir una versión con subtitulo en inglés para que muchos pudieran verla pero no pude encontrarla, igual les dejare un link para que disfruten de esta maravillosa historia hecha por venezolanos hace ya 35 años, "Pequeña Revancha".
