  1. Film Review: Lord of the Flies (1990)@drax1411d

Lord of the Flies, novel by British writer Wiliam Golding, widely considered to be one of the greatest works of world’s literature, deals with disturbing and depressive subject. That might explain why, despite its plot being film-friendly, there weren’t that many screen adaptations since its original 1954 publication. Among those the best known was the first, 1963 black-and-white film by British director Peter Brook. In 1975 Filipino director Lupita A. Concio directed second film called Alkitrang Dugo. The third and last adaptation was Lord of the Flies, 1990 American film directed by Harry Hook.

The plot begins when an aeroplane carrying 24 pre-teen cadets of US military academy crashes in South Pacific. Cadets survive and find shelter on apparently deserted tropical island. The pilot (played by Michael Greene), the only adult among survivors, is injured and delirious and boys would have to figure how to survive by themselves. Ralph (played by Balthazar Getty) is elected leader and he tries to organise his peers by establishing strict rules, telling them to maintain signal fire and make tools and weapons in order to fish and gather food. This works for a while, but some of the boys, for the first time left without adult supervision, tend to disregard rules and discard work for the sake of fun. The most vocal among them is Jack (played by Chris Furrh) who goes hunting for wild boar and whose faction, named “Hunters”, gathers in number at the expense of Ralph and his followers. Soon the conflict develops between the two and the glasses in possession of Ralph’s short-sighted and chubby friend Piggy (played by Danuel Pipoly), used to start fire, become object of contention. That and Jack convincing himself and others that there is mysterious monster on the island, would ultimately lead to destruction and bloodshed.

Script by Jay Presson Allen (credited as “Sara Schiff”) was relatively faithful to novel, but it made some changes to make it more accessible to early 1990s audience. Characters are Americans and made into young military cadets, thus emphasising the novel’s main thesis of fragility of civilisation in extraordinary circumstances; boys succumb to savagery despite being previously subjected to more discipline than civilians. Some of the changes weren’t that fortunate, like the references to popular show at US television at the time (which would probably mean little to today’s audiences). The main change is, however, in directorial style of Harry Hook that, unlike Brooks’ semi-documentarian approach in 1963 version, tries to turn Lord of the Flies, at least in visual sense, into conventional adventure story. The island is presented as lush tropical paradise, but opportunity to contrast it with boys’ descent into fratricidal violence is missed. Musical score by famed French composer Philippe Sarde also seems a little bit mismatched for this story. The young cast is mostly good, especially those playing three main characters. Balthazar Getty, the only member of young cast that would have successful career as adult, is a little bit better than Furrh and Pipoly. Film failed at the box office, probably due to unfortunate release at the very end of Cold War which made its plot and main theme lose a lot of relevancy. That relevancy is back today, but in order to watch seemingly civilised people succumbing to tribalism and savagery you could simply look at today’s social media.
