It’s already weekend and finally, after weeks of not watching any movies, I was able to watch one yesterday. This movie has been sitting on my to-watch list for a while, and when I finally got a chance yesterday, I realized I should give it a try. And that’s probably one of the best decisions I’ve made this month, because up until now, I still can’t get over how funny and heartwarming this movie is. I thought it would be a drama all over again, given the words in its title. However, the moment I watched the movie, I realized that it wouldn’t be like I expected at all! That’s why, before I give my full-blown reaction and review to this movie, I’ll first give you a sneak peek at the story of the couple that’s on the brink of their divorce, but certainly, fate has other plans.
About the Movie
Love Reset is romantic-comedy movie that was released way back 2013. This almost a couple of hour movie was directed by Nam Dae-jung and it features Kang Ha-neul who portrayed Noh Jung-yeol and Jung So-min as Hong Na-ra—the main characters of this movie. It all started with a wedding, but the ones who will be wed are not them. That day, Na-ra was supposed to marry another guy, but in the end, she still chose to run away from her wedding and be with Jung-yeol, who chose to wallow in the bar. Fast forward, and the two of them got married later on, yet their married life was far from their fairytale-like beginning.
Not a day would pass without them throwing sharp words and even things at each other. The love they once felt turned to hatred, and it grew bigger as they continued to live under the same roof. That’s why to end their miserable marriage, they decide to have a divorce. But 30 days before the end of their marriage, a life-changing accident happened. They were hit by multiple vehicles, yet miraculously, both of them survived at the expense of their memories. With their memories lost, their hatred for each other seemed to disappear, and with that, they’re back to being civil again.
Yet, with them devoid of any memories, they can’t function well; that is why their families strived to help them gain those again while keeping the divorce on track. They rediscover each other’s flaws, and along with it, they slowly realize the reasons why they fell in love in the first place. Piece by piece, they began to retrieve the memories they once lost, and while doing so, they started to feel the spark that they once felt before their marriage. But can that spark burn the bad memories they accumulate during their miserable married life? Or will it ignite the fire that would end their hateful marriage for good?
As I’ve said, I didn’t expect that this movie would be this good! I thought it would be sentimental and melancholic, but its story is definitely far from that. The number of times I laughed while watching this movie was undeniably a lot, and I love how, despite that, it tackles the complexity of married life, it still manages to keep it light-hearted. Honestly their premise was quite simple—a couple that’s almost divorced but ended up getting into accident and consequently losing their memories. If it hadn’t been executed well, that premise could have ended up being a boring one; yet the actors and actresses were able to portray their characters so well, and the pacing and transitions also made it really engaging.
I first watched Kang Ha-neul doing comedy in Midnight Runners, and I thought that would be the last one I'll see him do comedy, yet when I watched this movie, I’m again amused at how versatile he is in acting. I really laughed when he flashed his creepy smile. That’s probably the part where I laughed so loud haha. As for Jung So-min, I also watched her in comedies before, so I’m really positive that she’ll be as funny as she is in this movie, and I wasn’t disappointed because she’s as funny as Kang Ha-neul. Also, their chemistry was noteworthy because they’re able to portray the I-hate-you-but-I-love-you vibes so well. It went perfectly with the premise, and with that, I was able to enjoy the entirety of the movie.
Moreover, I like that despite being comedic, it was still able to ground itself with the realities of the challenges that married couples usually encounter. Indeed, not all marriage is the start of happily ever after, and upon watching this movie, it again reminded me of that fact. It’s unfortunate how many marriages end up in shambles because of the lack of communication and understanding, and I like how this movie highlighted that one. The main characters are basically the opposite of each other, yet why did they click off? I guess opposites attract each other, and my parents are one of the several proofs of that, yet not all were like them who were able to adapt to each other’s differences. Like the main characters, some of them get tired of each other and eventually decide on divorce. That’s really sad because some of them could be saved, but they choose not to…and it's a shame because of the time, effort, and memories that went to waste. So much for that, I’m really happy with how the story turned out because even though I usually like tragedies, there are of course, times that I prefer nice endings.
Overall, this movie is a 10/10 for me! This is probably the first time I totally enjoyed watching something this year. Not a moment of this movie was boring because from its comedic to the relatively serious scenes, I was really hooked on it. The jokes and dialogues really went well with its plot, and the actors and actresses—I think I already shared enough of how I’m amazed with their portrayals of their characters. And before I forgot! I also like how fitting their soundtrack is, especially that song on their wedding day—I laughed when I read its lyrics. The ending song also gave off a nice, heartwarming, and nostalgic feeling. So if you’re looking for light-hearted romantic comedy, then I think you ought to give Love Reset a try, and I promise, you’ll definitely not regret it!
