We were back in the days when TV sets were huge and heavy, we didn't even think they could be slim and even smart! The only way to switch from one channel to another was to turn the knob that selected them according to the number. It wasn't much effort anyway, as there were only 4 channels on offer.
Every Sunday, the fun after lunch, was to watch movies or series offered by the two main channels, and among them was one called Manimal, which was announced by an announcer, whose words were echoed by the echo they put to give it more drama.
At that time, being a little girl, I was grateful to be able to watch some foreign program, because it was like opening a small window through which I could perceive beyond what always happened in the country.
Since then, the vein of the audiovisual world was already present, and although I enjoyed the programs like anyone else, I was able to differentiate in terms of quality and the topics they dealt with. So Manimal was a must see.
This series was about a university professor (Simon MacCorkindale) who managed to turn into any animal he wanted, adopting not only his abilities but also his physical qualities, becoming a kind of detective or superhero to solve crimes.
The effects of their conversion, at the time, were incredible and one could imagine that it could really happen to anyone (come on! I was 8 years old!).
Now seeing them again, I really smile imagining my child self marveling with that, because you can tell that they are props added to an edition loaded with dissolvencies. But in any case, it helped with the illusion and that's what TV sells us, so it was valid.
Being aired once a week, we didn't notice the fact that it only consisted of one season of 8 episodes, at least not in the first cycle of reruns, and then it was hard to get hooked on a story that we knew the outcome.
I imagine that the decision to stop producing it went hand in hand with the production costs in terms of making the main actor, an animal with all its characteristics, coupled with how weak some of its plots could be.
Checking a bit on the web regarding the details of this series, I found that according to TvGuide, it is on their list of "the worst TV shows of all time", which makes it a cult show for some of those curious enough to watch it.
Particularly, I relate it to fond memories of my childhood self lying on my father's lap sitting on the sofa at home, and I imagine that the same will be true for others who, like me, were ¿lucky enough? to watch it on open TV in the 80s.

Estábamos en la época en la que los televisores eran enormes y pesados, ni siquiera pensábamos que pudieran ser delgados y hasta inteligentes! La única manera de pasar de un canal a otro, era acercándose para girar la perilla que los seleccionaba de acuerdo con el número. Igual no era mucho esfuerzo, pues la oferta eran solo 4 canales.
Cada domingo, la diversión luego de almorzar, era ver películas o series de las que ofrecían los dos canales principales, y entre ellas estaba una llamada Manimal, que anunciaba un locutor, cuyas palabras quedaban retumbando por el eco que le ponían para darle más dramatismo.
En aquel entonces, siendo yo una pequeña, agradecía poder ver algún programa extranjero, pues era abrir una pequeña ventana a través de la cual poder percibir más allá de lo que siempre acontecía en el país.
Ya desde entonces, la vena del mundo audiovisual se hacía presente, y si bien disfrutaba de los programas como cualquier otro, lograba diferenciar en cuanto a la calidad y los temas que se trataban. Así que Manimal había que verla.
Esta serie trataba sobre un profesor universitario (Simon MacCorkindale) que lograba convertirse en cualquier animal que él quisiera, adoptando no solo sus habilidades sino también sus cualidades físicas, convirtiéndose en una especie de detective o super héroe para resolver crímenes.
Los efectos de su conversión, para entonces resultaban increíbles y uno se imaginaba que realmente eso podía pasarle a cualquiera (vamos! tenía 8 años!).
Ahora viéndolos de nuevo, realmente sonrío imaginando a mi yo niña maravillada con eso, pues se nota que son elementos de utilería sumados a una edición cargada de disolvencias. Pero en todo caso, ayudaba con la ilusión y eso es lo que nos vende la Tv, así que era válido.
Al ser transmitida una vez por semana, no nos dimos cuenta del hecho que sólo constara de una temporada de 8 capítulos, por lo menos no en el primer ciclo de repeticiones, ya luego fue difícil engancharnos con una historia de la que sabíamos el desenlace.
Imagino que la decisión de dejar de producirla iba de la mano de los costos de producción en lo que respecta a hacer del actor principal, un animal con todas sus características, aunado también a lo flojas que podían resultar algunas de sus tramas.
Revisando un poco en la web con respecto a los detalles de esta serie, encontré que según TvGuide, se encuentra en su listado de "los peores programas de televisión de todos los tiempos", lo que la hace de culto para algunos de aquellos curiosos que se animan a verla.
Particularmente, yo la relaciono con lindos recuerdos, de mi yo niña recostada en el regazo de mi padre sentado en el sofá de la casa, y me imagino que lo mismo sucederá en otros que como yo, tuvimos la ¿suerte? de poderla ver por la Tv abierta de los años 80.
