Opinion
In 1968, Rose Marrowbone accompanied by her children; Jack, Jane, Billy and Sam, moves from the United Kingdom to America, fleeing from their past. While there, Rose's young children meet Allie and have some of the best moments of their lives. However, his mother, seriously ill, dies, but not before asking Jack to bury her and keep the secret of her death until he is 21 years old, age with which he can legally take responsibility for his brothers. Since then Jack will be the only one to leave the house, something that arouses suspicion in some people, mainly Tom Porter, the town's lawyer, who in turn is sentimentally attracted to Allie. Slowly the brothers will have to face the fact that represents the absence of their mother, the return of their past and a dark mystery.
When I was watching the film I thought it was of British origin, the European style told me so, but no, surprisingly I was facing a film of Spanish origin. Why the actors, the location, and the whole movie is English? It is another mystery.
The film is basically a family drama with components of psychological mystery technically very well elaborated by the director. Making the film more understood through sentimental experience than through logical understanding. Although it is within the Psychological Horror category, part of the audience assimilated the work dramatically, and even some cried. This is because even though the film includes elements of horror, the sad history of this family predominates.
The direction was good from the technical point of view, the landscapes shown on the screen, the staging, the selection of colors, the shots and the cuts were correct and of good cinematographic level, however, to appreciate the film not is necessary to go to the cinema, it is perfectly enjoyable from the TV screen.
The script makes everyone doubt, and divides the audience and the critics, some think that the script is a fraud, that Sergio G. Sánchez, director and screenwriter, plays with the audience discourteously, while others think that the script is excellent and that transfers greater dimension and complexity to the film. My opinion on the script, and even more on the final twits, is as divided as the audience, on the one hand, it took me by surprise but on the other hand it leaves me more questions than answers.
The performances are fantastic, George MacKay was brilliant, giving us an excellent performance as Jack. Charlie Heaton does a convincing and successful job like Billy. Mia Goth was great, it's a shame she did not have enough prominence, little Matthew Stagg despite his age makes a great performance. Anya Taylor-Joy is really spectacular in this film, she does it very well every time her character appears on the screen. On the other hand, Kyle Soller, he does not do it badly, but his character is a waste, a mere narrative element rather than a character, I detest when the scriptwriter introduces shallow characters only to be sacrificed for a bigger cause.
Finally, I must say that it is a film that I enjoyed a lot, the story moved me and although the end makes us question everything, I feel that it does not ruin the film, because the development of the story is very well done. Undoubtedly, an end that gives something to talk about.

Good direction, script that I consider good, but that includes a twist that changes everything and that will not please everyone, excellent interpretations. A drama full of psychological elements and containing some scares. Technically correct, with a good development but with a questionable ending.
Entering about 20 minutes duration, when the character in Marrowbone first encounters a mysterious event, one of the spectators says, "Nah, start this, start". An expression of relief because the appearance of ghosts does not appear. Fair expression, especially if you expect to be treated to the concept of the haunted house according to the formula. But for audiences who pay more attention, or know that Sergio G. Sanchez's directorial debut (previously written on The Orphanage and The Impossible) features drama, the terror has been going on for a while. The terror was named grief, which tested the family ties of four Marrowbone brothers, Jack (George MacKay), Billy (Charlie Heaton), Jane (Mia Goth), and Sam (Matthew Stagg) are forced to keep their mother's death secret so as to live together as a matter of law and the pursuit of the father. What father did was immediately described, except the statement of how cruel he was. Participating in the Marrowbone family life is Allie (Anya Taylor-Joy) who quickly captivated Jack, the eldest. The occurrence of an event brings its path to jump forward six months when invisible beings have haunted the life of his character.
Marrowbone is not just about frightening, precisely not through the "traditional" way. In the vacuum of space and white cloth wrapped in a rigid mirror, Sergio G. Sanchez sparked fear of nothingness and ignorance. Without knowing the exact form, the audience was made sure that the terrifying figure was ready to ambush from behind the dark corners of the Marrowbone house, thanks to Xavi Gimenez's cinematography, had a tense atmosphere. Unfortunately, when Sergio started showing ghosts albeit a bit, the atmospheric charm of the film was somewhat evaporated. Jump scare that counts occasionally jerked fingers, accompanied by a surprising sound plus scoring "hunt" ala old thriller made by Fernando Velazquez.
Events before the jump time flow, ghost disturbances, deeds of the father, all stored up to third act, including through the existence of a twist. If you like horror, certainly not hard to guess the direction. But rather than "how surprising", it is more important to notice how clever the scriptwriter spreads the subtle clues in order to surprise her unimpressed lie. There the script is quite successful, because once the facts are revealed, the seemingly trivial things begin to interconnect to form meaning, even though the prepared answers include the easy-to-use, exploit condition that often becomes a horror / thriller shortcut explaining the series of irregularities.
Feels special when the twist, even all elements of horror are used to represent themes such as grief and regret in the family. Sergio's scenario is beautifully written, catapulting the peak of emotion as the veil of truth unfolds, where every endless horror contains more meaning. Sergio realized that the substance of drama and horror are intertwined. If drama is composed of dynamics involving negative emotions (sad, angry, fearful), then horror translates those emotions into spooky things. Marrowbone marries both, generating horror with a heart that balances supernatural terror and touching family stories, The four main actors are equally solid. MacKay appeared convincing as a youth with loads of loads that gradually doubled due to pressure to become the head of the family. Goth as Jane no less problematic, so fragile let alone coupled her eyes. Heaton dared to fight the typecast after the two seasons of Stranger Things, playing Billy who was more "hot" than his siblings. While Stagg, though the youngest is often bridged distribution of feelings of the film to the audience. The chemistry of the four of them is very strong, so it will be difficult to hold back when Marrowbone displays his last shot.

The first part of this trailer makes it look like a drama. Then it descends into horror. That is surprising. This movie does look interesting. It got my interest because it has that guy from Stranger things.
