One of the movies that caught my attention as soon as I heard about it, is this title; that's because it touches on an interesting subject and involves one of my favorite actresses, Natalie Portman. I was able to see it recently on Prime Video. Released in 2023, with director Todd Haynes.

The scandal I am referring to is that Gracie, when she was a married woman, had an intense affair with a 13-year-old boy, Joe Yoo, to the point that they had a child. After being sentenced and spending years in prison, she married Joe Yoo and started a family with him. The movie begins decades after the scandal was uncovered. About the story, it is based on a real case in the USA.

In the plot we will see how the actress, tries to uncover the mysteries, personalities and true thoughts of those involved; especially tries to understand Grace, as she will play her, and know her motives to commit such an atrocity. For while on the facade of the family he finds, all is well, the reality is that past events continue to affect their day to day lives.

There is a certain parallel between what Grace and Elizabeth do, since the latter will also try to go to the ultimate consequences to get what she wants. There are certain touches of comedy, but the majority of the film is a drama.

Recomendable.

This drama film released in the year 2023 on Netflix, tells the story of Gracie (Julianne Moore) and Joe (Charles Melton) a couple that generated a lot of controversy because of the big age difference between them which caused a lot of noise among neighbors and the population near them. Both seem to have a pretty good relationship where love seems to be enough so that age is not a problem. After a while and after all the news that came out in the newspaper about the relationship and also the consequences that followed, Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman), a young actress who was chosen to play Gracie, comes into the life of this couple, but in order to make a good movie she must know more about the relationship between Gracie and Joe and that is why she decides to spend some time near them.

The film is shown in a very peculiar way and with a soundtrack that makes you stay glued to your seat for not knowing what is going to happen next. Elizabeth begins her investigation process, she starts talking a little bit with Gracie as she is the main voice of this story, she tells her that she never saw any problem with having a relationship with Joe even though this relationship started when he was in seventh grade and she was 36 years old, This turned out to be quite shady for Elizabeth but she continued her investigation while realizing that the town looked down on this couple, especially why it is not possible for a thirteen year old, which was the age Joe was when he met Gracie, and that she thought it was normal to have a relationship with him because love was born and according to her as long as they both love each other it does not matter what others say.

Elizabeth realizes that there are many things that are not normal at all, like Joe having children who are already in college when he could be their brother because of his age. More and more Elizabeth wants to know everything, to know from the beginning of the relationship, to know how the two of them relate as a family and how this affects their lives directly and indirectly. We can see that the story began in a way in which Gracie being an adult but with many emotional wounds that she does not usually remember or tries to forget, approaches Joe and according to her she says that he was the one who conveyed to her that he felt love towards her. Gracie is a character that we see breaking down many times during the movie and as her husband Joe is always willing to comfort her and be there for her, she calls it love but I think it was only what he had learned to do because he never really knew any other life than the one he has with Gracie.

This story according to what I read on the internet was based on a real life event where a woman teacher had sex with one of her underage students, even this woman I mentioned went to jail and got more than 6 years in prison, but after getting out she met her student again and they started a relationship that went to marriage and they had children. What I could see in the movie is that both Gracie and Joe had lives that even though they were different especially in age, they both had voids to fill. But it was very shady that Gracie would approach Joe who could be her son or even her grandson, in the movie there is a scene where Joe realizes that basically the life he has is not what he expected and that he never wanted to be in that situation but he let himself get involved even though Gracie says he was the one who seduced her but how can a thirteen year old boy have so much power to seduce a mature woman and capable of understanding that it was not right.

Julianne Moore's performance was really impeccable, her way of showing the pain and at the same time a laughing version of herself despite everything she had to go through just to have a relationship with Joe was amazing. Natalie Portman once again gave me that feeling like in the Black Swan movie where she got so into the character she was going to play about Gracie's life that she ended up doing things out of character even though she knew from the beginning she was there for work, but it got out of hand. I liked Charles Melton's performance, I haven't seen other movies where he appears but his interpretation of the character in this movie was impeccable and it generated in me that feeling of bewilderment and sadness to see how he had all those doubts about his relationship with Gracie and realizing that he lost many stages of his life that he longed to live.

I really liked this movie especially for the drama and psychology that the story carries, beyond seeing it as something perverse you can notice the murky history of this couple that should never have met. It is a story that grabs you, the soundtrack has a lot of power in the suspenseful scenes that are many within the film, I had thought not to see this movie because I thought it would be different but I ended up being very impressed. I liked how they covered the topic of relationships with age difference, especially when it is one like Gracie's where she was older and Joe was younger. It caused me a lot of tension and sadness to see that they both had a lot of things they should never have been together for, they both had to heal emotionally, especially Gracie who suffered a lot during her childhood.

I hope you can watch this movie, I give it a 4.5 out of 5 because it was very good, I hope you can watch it it is on Netflix and online movie sites, it is almost two hours long. If you are looking to see something full of drama and suspense, that will keep your attention on the story, this movie is for you.

  3. Controversial And Intriguing—Review Of May December (2023)@kemmyb922d

IMG_20231219_165217.jpgSource, Fair Use divider curl .webp

I enjoy films that focus on controversial issues and challenge our original beliefs and rules on what's right or wrong. Some people might find films like this appalling to watch but an open mind is not a bad thing. Once I saw Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore on the poster of this recent release, I knew it would be mind-blowing. It turned out so.

May December (2023) is an American dark comedy that centres on Elizabeth Berry (played by Natalie Portman), an actress who is slated to play the role of Gracie Atherton in an indie film. It happens that Gracie Atherton is well-known for her scandalous relationship with her husband when he was merely a thirteen-year-old student. To prepare for this role, Elizabeth visits the home of Gracie Atherton (played by Julianne Moore), so she can study the woman's life and family.

    https://youtu.be/8z3JaevxEMA?si=WAmFeV1n-MLlnKXVSource: YouTube

As Gracie allows this popular stranger into her home to spend time with her family, certain things begin to come to light that inform Elizabeth's mindset towards her role and also topple the seemingly peaceful Atherton family. Will this actress know the true Elizabeth and understand her and the choices she made?

    Review

I'll say this is one of the best films I've seen this year. Considering the calibre of the lead actors, I expected nothing less than an outstanding performance. The plot is brilliant and inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau story that came to light in 1996. Director Todd Haynes did a great job adapting it into a movie. The storytelling is impressively done in a suspenseful and unsettling way that confuses the audience at some points while seeking their judgement on the characters' choices.

    IMG_20231219_163241.jpg

    IMG_20231219_163214.jpg

I like that the pace is even, not slow or fast, drawing in the audience. The film starts well, entertaining us with this normal family on their normal days. Everything starts to make sense until the truth and emotional state of the characters begin to surface. This approach captivates viewers' attention and makes the film unpredictable.

The casting is perfect in my opinion. I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to portray Gracie and Elizabeth besides Julianna Moore and Natalie Portman. These ladies were well cast and their performances were excellent. Gracie is portrayed as this nice lady, beloved by her friends and neighbours until the fog clears and we see the true person underneath the layer of frailty and naivety.

Natalie Portman as Elizabeth took my breath away with her acting skills. She starts as this cool actress on a mission and soon enough, transforms into this complex character. It's difficult to know if she's acting like Gracie or if her true self is being revealed. The scene where she sleeps with Joe and treats the situation as nothing is shocking but well done.

Another performance I applaud is that of Charles Melton as Joe. He's like the glue that holds the film together. He's strong and wants to be there for Gracie and his children but he's only human and breaks down in an unexpected way. Our hearts go out to him as it's clear that he's struggling and we want to "free" him from a life that is fast spinning out of control. Charles embodied his character perfectly.

This film questions the rightness or wrongness of an adult-minor relationship, choices and throws light on the concept of consent in relationships. No doubt, society changes but should an adult teacher sleeping with a minor be considered normal or "right"? From the teacher's viewpoint, the student loved her, pursued her and that makes it okay in her book. I know many might scream at how "wrong" the relationship is but to this student, it seemed right. This is my definition of a complicated relationship!

As the film unfolds, I see the characters change, revealing their true selves and my sympathies end up with the student. It's popularly said "love knows no gender, age, race or religion" and "age is just a number". Yet I see a character who is struggling but seems unable to find a way out of his predicament. Or maybe he's resigned to his fate? I'll let you be the judge of this when you see the movie. It took my breath away in some scenes and some others were a bit uncomfortable to watch, because of the morality and ethical questions raised.

Overall, May December (2023) is a film worth watching with an open mind. I believe similar situations take place in our society but how we handle such matters a lot. I'll give it 4.2 stars out of 5.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

May December is one of those films that I honestly have a hard time talking about, since apart from dealing with a delicate topic in a forceful way, it knows how to generate a discussion that goes a little further than demonizing a taboo topic... Or lord have mercy: glorify it.

For those who don't know it, it is a film directed by Todd Haynes and starring the excellent Juliane Moore and Natalie Portman that was released this year, where Portman plays a young actress named Elizabeth who will participate in a film inspired by the story of Gracie (Moore), a famous woman who generated a lot of media attention a couple of decades ago for having a relationship with a teenager when she was 36 years old.

    IMG_20231202_230014.jpg

    IMG_20231202_225958.jpg

The most curious thing about the whole thing is that that 13-year-old boy has continued to be her partner throughout this time (Charles Melton).

Because of the previously mentioned movie, Elizabeth decides to spend a couple of weeks with Gracie, which will increasingly reveal the cracks of the murky relationship that she had (And maintains) with the young Joe Yoo.

    IMG_20231202_225939.jpg

    IMG_20231202_225926.jpg

Evidently there is a very long list of things that make May December a fascinating experience, not only because its trifecta protagonist has managed to deliver performances that border on perfection (I highlight Melton, by the way) and there is a clear audiovisual identity that hooks us. from the beginning, but because it is a film that tackles a complicated topic without the need to sugarcoat or rationalize it: Grooming.

Although it is normal to find eternal debates on the internet about the age of consent, the age gap between couples and the power dynamics in various situations, May December manages to transfer a hypothetical case to fiction in the most bitter and real way possible, confusing us. with a tone that organically goes from drama to horror, almost as if it were aware of the large number of eyes that will gravitate towards the film solely because of the morbidity generated by its premise.

Instead we have a devastating work, where a young man must renounce his dreams and illusions to keep alive the narcissistic spirit of a woman who seems to be incapable of seeing him as a human being.

    IMG_20231202_225909.jpg

In May December there is no romance or morally pleasant solutions, just a sad reality that from time to time we all prefer to ignore.
