    Million Dollar Baby

Hello to everyone in the Movies & TV Shows community! Today I bring you a new movie review, this time we will be talking about "Million Dollar Baby", one of the most touching dramas directed (also as producer, soundtrack composer and actor) by Clint Eastwood. From 2004, with a screenplay by Paul Haggis based on the novel Rope Burns: Stories From the Corner (F.X. Toole), it tells the story of Frankie Dunn (a boxing trainer) and Maggie Fitzgerald (a waitress) who will be united by a common goal, personal fulfillment. Told through voice-over (a resource used to give us the point of view of Eddie Dupris -Morgan Freeman, as Frankie's friend-), this story that is apparently about boxing, will touch on very human issues.

Maggie (played by the fantastic Hilary Swank) is a 31-year-old waitress, fatherless, with a mother and brothers who despise her, no studies, no money and no one in life to support her, Maggie wants to fulfill her dream of becoming a professional boxer and get out of that life full of shortages. On the other hand we have Frankie (played by Clint Eastwood), who has a small boxing gym, where he spends his time training boxers who aspire to reach the big leagues. Frankie feels alone and guilty, as his only daughter refuses to contact him despite his attempts, but at least he has his good friend Eddie, a retired boxer, to keep him focused.

Maggie assiduously attends Frankie's boxing gym, training on her own and almost unnoticed by others, she watches Frankie as he trains Willie Little, an up-and-coming boxer whom Frankie looks after warily. Maggie tries to approach Frankie to ask him to train her, but he refuses since he doesn't train women, much less her age (he is somewhat conservative, old-fashioned). However, thanks to Maggie's determination to prove that she deserves a chance (and that Frankie's challenger is leaving with another trainer), Frankie agrees to train her on the condition that she must put her life in the ring and obey his demands. This decision becomes a personal challenge for both of them and the reason for their lives.

Maggie takes this opportunity very seriously, training every day all day long in order to reach the physical level necessary to fight at the level of her opponents. It is in this frequent interaction between Frankie and Maggie, where the relationship of respect and admiration of a disciple for his master (and vice versa, because Frankie esteems her) transcends to another level, the paternal (even, you can sense at some point a different love from Maggie). Sharing funny moments eating a lemon pie in an old cafeteria (an important place in the story), both talk about their ghosts (their past, their fears and dreams), making their relationship more intimate. Little by little Maggie manages to build up a good reputation and reaches a peak moment where they both seem to finally fulfill their dreams.

The film has many reasons to be seen, but none more powerful than the fact that it makes us feel in Maggie and Frankie's shoes, as we have all experienced how hard life can be, but how it is worth fighting for, even if it is only to fulfill a dream. The background of the story is quite similar to the film "The Elephant Man" by David Lynch (1980), where John (John Hurt as the elephant man) is rescued by a doctor (Anthony Hopkins) to help him get a free and dignified life, away from the marginality to which he had been condemned in a circus. Both films even have the same epilogue. Although in Million Dollar Baby it is more evident because the letter that Eddie reads to us is an announcement of the possible outcome. Also, because both are stories partially based on true stories.

An exemplary direction, where the photography of great contrast (and making use of backlighting), lets us know that Frankie and Maggie are not so different although it seems so. The duality between both characters is important, they complement each other. And this is no longer just a story about boxing but also about love, overcoming, dignity, honor, acceptance and resignation. Finally my friends, Million Dollar Baby is a fantastic movie, one of my favorites. With the presence of three great actors who are of the highest caliber. Hilary Swank's performance in "The Boys Don't Cry" was arguably unsurpassed, but she clearly outdid herself as little "Mo Cuishle". Without further ado, I hope you liked this review, thanks so much for stopping by and I'll see you next time.

There are films that succeed in the double objective of being true masterpieces of cinema and of telling the poetics of those who direct those films. This is the case of the Million Dollar Baby Oscar-winning film in 2005. A Hollywood monster like Clint Eastwood will direct it. After making millions of people in the western genre fall in love, thanks to his memorable acting performances, he passed behind the camera where he became one of the most appreciated directors of contemporary cinema with great success. A simple direction, never baroque and refined, with a clean and essential touch. The ability to know how to tell and excite with his stories has always hit the mark. With Million Dollar Baby, Eastwood's filmography reaches its peak. Assisted by a Hilary Swank never so perfect and a Morgan Freeman in a state of grace, the director of Gran Torino manages to direct a film able to excite and speak to the spectator as few other times had happened to him. The story of a poor and marginalized woman who pursues a dream, an atypical dream like that of becoming a professional boxer, intersects the twilight path of an old style box teacher and her brave adventure companion.

The roads of the 2 will intertwine and despite the reluctance of the old coach will end up giving birth to a beautiful collaboration not only sporting. Maggie will end up finding in Frankie a paternal figure that the latter, despite appearances, will incarnate with great pleasure behind his tough and gruff old man's mask. Destiny is sometimes known to be mocking. It will happen that when the pieces of the puzzle are properly aligned one of those tiles will fall, shattering the entire mosaic. It's a story that brings together all the themes dear to Clint Eastwood. The American dream, the value of emotions, the color of emotions, the human capital that we often forget, human contact, self-giving to others, selfishness and altruism that manifest themselves in the same story, in the same life. Frankie didn't want to open up to a girl who needed to believe in something, but maybe that was what she needed. Maggie never imagined she was so loved and respected yet perhaps she just needed someone to believe in her. The happy ending does not come in Million Dollar Baby and yet in a sense it is as if it had arrived. When 2 people meet succeeding in improving one another's life then perhaps a small miracle has happened. Misfortune, illness, death will never be so sweet. At least for a day, at least for a period of time we managed to touch happiness, to live dreams and hopes to the full and above all to share them with someone else.

Se fundamentó en la novela Time of Their Lives o The Dionne Tragedy de John Nihmey y Stuart Foxman.

    Annette Lillianne Marie Allard (viviente)

    [Fuente](http://www.livin-vintage.com/2010/06/film-fashion-friday-million-dollar.html) # Un final amargo

  5. Million Dollar Baby (film): excellent movie that deserves the praise@gooddream2875d

I don't know if this has changed in the states yet, but when i was still living there people rarely went to a movie because of the director. Our theater decisions were almost always determined by who the star was rather than the person who is behind the overall creative decisions - which I have learned in my time on this planet is far more important than the actor for the most part.

However, when you combine a fantastic director with fantastic actors, you end up with solid gold, and that is precisely what happened with Million Dollar Baby

    life04_img02.jpg

Clint Eastwood plays the role of an underappreciated boxing trainer named Frankie Dunn, a man who is very set in his ways and runs a failing boxing camp. He isn't terribly interested in training a Missouri waitress named Maggie (played by Hillary Swank) who comes into his gym one day but she is persistent and stubborn and he eventually takes her on and she ends up impressing him and her complete dedication eventually also wins his heart in a father-figure type way.

    million-dollar-baby-still2-526x295.jpg

Is there anyone out there that doesn't think that Morgan Freeman narrating a movie makes it much better? Well that is what happens in this movie. I think that pretty much any film that Freeman narrates ends up being a blockbuster. I challenge anyone out there to prove this theory wrong. Morgan's character of Eddie "Scrap-Iron" Dupris, Frankie's assistant and elderly former boxer who was blinded in one eye in a fight, is perfectly played (unsurprisingly) by Freeman.

    Million Dollar Baby - 2.gif

This film is incredibly well-written and is damn near perfect. It is incredibly moving and touching and will almost certainly make even the most hardcore tough-guy a bit misty-eyed. This movie will haunt you. Even now as I am writing this I am seriously considering watching it yet again tonight because it is just that good.

With a budget of merely $30 million it ended up grossing more than $200 million and won 4 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actress in a leading role, and Best Director (Eastwood's 2nd.) It also one a ton of awards around the world but was snubbed by MTV - but I don't think anyone really gives a s**t what MTV thinks anymore (or then.) It was also in theaters for more than 6 months which has to be some kind of a record.

If i was to make a list of 10 films that a person absolutely must see in their lives, this would be on that list for sure. I can find absolutely nothing wrong with it, not even a little bit of negative criticism will come from this guy. It is damn near perfect and if you are one of the few people on the planet that somehow managed to not see it you should rectify this situation as soon as possible.

    10 / 10
