Mixed by Erry is an Italian movie based on true story of three brother who built one of the largest music distribution networks in not so legal fashion. It is a story of piracy during the times when music was distributed in cassette tapes. The movie also walks us through one of the important moments in history for music and how technology continued to changed producing, distributing, and consuming music. The story makes us ponder upon how far we have come, and how things have changed significantly in such a short period of time due to the advancements in technology. Yet, it seems we face the same issues for the same problems.

While the main story of the movie is how Erry and his brother build a successful cassette tape distribution system, network and business, it also tells the story of an ordinary family and how their lives evolved. Despite the hardships of live, it seems Frattasio family was always together and changes in their financials have not changed them and their relationships with one another. Loyalty of brothers to each other also played a big role in their success and failure.

Erry from the childhood had passion for music and had an encyclopedic memory of songs, artists, albums, etc. He wanted to become a DJ. However, this didn't work out for him and he wasn't successful in becoming one. Not having any luck with becoming a DJ, Erry works at local electronics store, the place he has been spending time in since he was a kid. As a hobby Erry makes mixtapes and they give them out for the store customers as a gift. The store owners ends up selling the business and Erry is left without a job. But the store owners leaves the entire collection of the music to Erry. At the same time his brothers have difficulty with finding and keeping jobs as well.

Using Erry's talent of making mixtapes brothers managed to make some money. However, they quickly discover that making one mixtape at a time wasn't scalable and would take too long. But what if there was a device that could make mixtape copies faster. With all the innovation happening, there had to be something out there. And they were right. After going to through many magazines searching for this specific device, they finally find it. But it was expensive they didn't have have money. They were determined in pursuing this idea, and confident that it would work, they go to a loan shark to get the money they need to buy the device. This was a risky step, because the interest they had to repay on this loan was hefty.

Their plan work. The copier works as it was intended. They manage to sell many mixtapes and make enough money in no time to return the loan with interest, and make profits. They weren't going to stop here. They continue buying more copier and expand their business. "Mixed By Erry" becomes a recognized brand for quality mixtapes sold everywhere. As they continue making more money, they continue expanding their business. It seems it didn't even occur to them they were doing anything illegal. They had a great idea, had talent for making quality mixtapes, and managed to create a network of distribution of their products. Erry, would also add songs from lesser known artists at the end to create some exposure for the new talents. It seems their business venture was built for the love and appreciation of art. However, they haven't really considered copyright issues and they may have been profiting at the cost of the artists.

Erry was indeed talented and had an ability to create quality mixtapes and was very knowledgable all things music and songs. But perhaps the real reason for their success was the simple economics. These mixtapes they were selling were cheaper than the ones distributed from official companies that had the rights to distribute them. Also, the official version were able to keep up with the demand, and maybe weren't even able to mix various songs from various artists. Maybe there was a way for Frattasio brothers to recreate the same success without any legal consequences. They did try to create setup companies so they could make business deals with other companies, and pay the taxes they owe. However, the ultimate issue was that they didn't have the rights for distribution. Moreover, they managed to create tapes for albums that hadn't been released yet and were being performed in festivals.

Despite Italian financial police's continuous efforts to shut down their operations, Frattasio brothers' mixtape business continues to grow. After every discovery of their "labs" and their equipment being confiscated, the brothers manage to come up with new schemes to evade the police. Watching the movie and following the story at times it feels like perhaps Erry and his brothers did deserve to get rich. After all what they created did involve creativity, innovation, and produced what was in demand. But also artists deserve to be paid for what created, without artists the brothers wouldn't have the product they were selling. I wonder if there was another way for brother to run their business in a way it would also compensate the artists. I doubt they would mind it either. The real problem probably is in the system, how artists to get a chance at success would have to sign exclusive deals with records and distribution companies who also probably didn't play by the rules.

Cassette tapes was an interesting and important step in how music industry evolved. But technology doesn't stop. It does make things better, but not all the time. There are still questions and debates if what music has evolved into today is a fair system too. Vynal records, cassette tapes, CDs provided some kind of ownership and ability to give away. Today everything is digital. It is more convenient for consumers find the music they like, and appreciate the art. It is also possible for artists to be discovered globally instantly using current distribution systems, and build their brands using social media. Artists today have wider audience and better tools. Yet, it still seems artists may not get the fair deal even today, and consumer may not even own the music they purchase. We may have better systems in place, however they aren't perfect. I think blockchain will play a role in improving these system. There is definitely potential for verifying authenticity, instant sharing, transfer of property, etc. While technology exists, the implementation isn't there yet. This is an interesting topic to explore some other time.

Frattasio brothers eventually get caught by police, because one of their business partners who was selling them the blank cassettes decides to make a deal and testify against brothers. The brothers end up in prison. Angelo informs them that a lot of their cash was buried and tennis court was built on top of it. Once they get out of prison, they can buy the place and recover the cash. Since the Italy would be changing its currency to Euro, the money Angelo have hidden might have become worthless by the time they leave prison. It is not clear if brothers were able to recover their cash or had to give them all up. But main question I still have is. How they were able to obtain the new unreleased songs when they were still being presented at festivals.

Para mi la pirateria esta asociada a los inicios de los 2000, cuando el boom de los CD, DVD y Blu Ray comenzó. Al punto que en mi país, Perú, era muy fácil acceder a todo tipo de archivo(películas, música, juegos, etc) en variados comercios. Sin embargo, nunca indague en saber el origen de esa forma de distribución, algo que toca esta película. Estrenada el 2023, fue dirigida por Sydney Sibilia, producción italiana.

For me, piracy is associated to the beginning of the 2000's, when the boom of CD, DVD and Blu Ray started. To the point that in my country, Peru, it was very easy to access all kinds of files (movies, music, games, etc) in various stores. However, I never inquired about the origin of this form of distribution, something that this film touches upon. Released in 2023, it was directed by Sydney Sibilia, Italian production.

Sinopsis: Enrico es uno de los hermanos Fratassio. Desde pequeño tuvo una clara afición a la música, así que decide convertirse en DJ. Es en ese proceso que él y sus hermanos ven una oportunidad de negocio en la distribución de mezclas de música en cassettes. Este negocio será más grande de lo que suponía, y le hará amigos y enemigos.

Synopsis: Enrico is one of the Fratassio brothers. Since he was a child he had a clear liking for music, so he decides to become a DJ. It is in that process that he and his brothers see a business opportunity in the distribution of music mixes on cassettes. This business will be bigger than he assumed, and will make him friends and enemies.

Si bien al comienzo parece una película de emprendimiento, nos muestra ese limbo o duda, sobre lo que genera este tipo de negocio. Ya que de alguna forma fomento la música de formas que antes no podía.

This film is based on the true story of the Fratassio brothers, who managed to create a great business based on the sale of cassettes with music without rights, piracy. Although at the beginning it seems to be a film of entrepreneurship, it shows us that limbo or doubt, about what generates this type of business. El tono de la película es mucha comedia con un toque de drama, con muchas escenas divertidas. Se enfoca en mostrar las diversas anécdotas que tuvo la carrera empresarial de los hermanos. Y creo que la duración es la acertada. No es una película sería, más bien relajada.

The tone of the film is a lot of comedy with a touch of drama, with many funny scenes. It focuses on showing the various anecdotes of the brothers' business career. And I think the length is just right. It's not a serious film, more relaxed.

Si bien se habla de música, no es que se escuche un largo soundtrack. Un punto negativo son los escenarios que acaban viéndose limitados, a pesar de intentar evitarlo. La actuación es buena, los hermanos acaban robando la pantalla.

Como película para apreciar cómo se inició la pirateria en Italia, sin duda es una buena y divertida opción para ver.

Saludos comunidad amantes del cine en esta ocasión vamos hablar de la película Mixed by Erry, que acabo de ver, me dejo totalmente sorprendido esta película y me pareció muy interesante que está basada en un hecho de la vida real y Considero que es una excelente película para todos aquellos emprendedores que ven las cosas diferentes y es una gran película en dónde se muestra un gran emprendimiento, Aunque algo controversial pero ciertamente le género mucho dinero.

La película está ambientada los años 80 90 Cuándo empieza a nacer el furor por la música y en esta época no había tantas restricciones como ahora con la parte de los derechos de autor y todo eso, los protagonistas son tres hermanos que vivieron siempre en la pobreza podría decirse de manera muy humilde, pero ellos consiguieron emprender un negocio qué fue muy exitoso gracias a su manera de manejar o de ver las cosas, para mí fue algo interesante y que ustedes mismo tienen que ver en esta película, porque ciertamente cuando uno está emprendiendo en cualquier negocio, se va a encontrar con obstáculos y el saber sortear esos obstáculos es la diferencia entre el éxito y el fracaso, y como en esta película es cuestión de ensayo y error hay veces que las cosas no salen de una, pero no quiere decir que no exista otro camino para lograr ese tan anhelado sueño, para mí esta película Fue bastante impactante y reveladora siempre me he considerado un emprendedor.

Aunque su negocio no era del todo legal por así decirlo, porque infringía ciertas leyes que ahora son derechos de autor, Pero quizás en esa época estás leyes no eras tan restrictivas, quizás por esta razón fue que modificaron algunas cosas en la ley, para poder combatir mucho mejor lo que es la piratería y quizás en esa época fue toda una gran revolución musical lo que lograron estos chicos no puedes perderte esta gran película que te recomiendo ver estoy seguro que cambiara tu manera de ver un emprendimiento.

Who remembers the time of the copy type cd's (in my country they were called "quemaditos"). If we think back to that time too, do you remember downloading those songs full of 9233847843 viruses from ARES? And we had like 1000 versions to choose from without vocals or mixes that weren't "the original" 🤣.

For those of us from the 80's, do you remember walking down the streets and seeing the street vendors with all kinds of songs and styles, artists, musical genres, compilations of songs on what were called "cassettes" in their stalls at full volume?

Look, in my particular anecdote I remember that I had a cassette, I don't even remember how it came into my life but my mother gave me a player that had a cassette and CD's, so when the radio played I would press PLAY and REC and record my favourite songs from my favourite radio station and I could listen to it over and over again. On certain occasions, the tape would come out of the cassette or I wanted to fast forward it and I would resort to a pencil to turn them around and achieve my goals. What a time those were! 🤣.

¿Quién recuerda la época de los cd´s tipo copia? (en mi país se llamaban "quemaditos"). Si rememoramos también en esa época, ¿Recuerdas descargar esas canciones llenas de 9233847843 virus de ARES? Y teníamos como 1000 versiones por las cuales decidir sin voces o mixes que no eran "la original" 🤣.

Para los que somos de la década de los 80, ¿Recuerdan pasear por la calles y ver a los vendedores ambulantes tener en sus puestos de ventas a todo volumen, todo tipo de canciones y estilos, artistas, géneros musicales, compilación de canciones en aquello que se llamaba "cassettes"?

Miren, en mi anécdota particular recuerdo que tenía un cassette, ni recuerdo como llegó a mi vida pero mi mamá me regaló un reproductor que traía cassette y cd´s, por lo que cuando sonaba la radio apretaba PLAY Y REC y grababa mis canciones favoritas desde mi estación de radio favorita y así la podía escuchar una y otra vez. En ciertas ocasiones, la cinta se salía del cassette o quería adelantarla y recurría a un lapicero para darles vueltas y conseguir mis objetivos ¡Que tiempos aquellos!🤣.

The point between legal and illegal

Until I was older, I didn't understand what piracy was. It never crossed my mind that going to a street vendor and buying a copy cheaper than in an original shop was wrong and a crime. I never saw anyone in jail for this offence and that we could go to jail! In my country it was a normal practice without any consequences.

I think this is where this story starts to make sense, between what is right and what is wrong. For Enrrico (our main character), his dream was to be a DJ. That was the only thing that mattered to him to get out of poverty, to mix his songs, to be famous, to show his talent, but like many, the opportunities were limited; I don't particularly find anything wrong with having desires and aspirations, only that the system is very cruel even for those who have talents.

On the basis that he recorded the songs, put his personal touch on them and sold them, what crime was he committing? That was not very clear to me, because then let's think about the dj's of today that come with their music everywhere and put their personal touch on it. I don't think they are committing some kind of illegality because otherwise they would all go to jail.

But I do see a point that makes me wonder where the record companies are, because continuing with my story, I remember that the burned cd's even had a cover (printed too) that said "Total or partial reproduction is forbidden..." now I understand how much cheek 😌.

Talking about the film, the context is set in the city of Naples - Italy and these brothers immersed in poverty and without any way out of their economic lives, with financial problems, legal problems and with the family growing, looked for strategies to reproduce the famous music on their cassettes that were distributed with the description in the signature of "Mixed By Erry".

At the time, there was no crime for what they were doing, but the money they were making brought them to the attention of both "the good guys and the bad guys" and things began to get tangled up for them, to the point where they made decisions throughout the film that helped them get around all the obstacles that came their way.

These operations of the Frattasio brothers, in turn, lead the authorities to create operations to catch them, becoming a "cat and mouse" style hunt, in order to put an end to their illicit activities.

I like that because the crime was not yet criminalised and that is where the development of the film comes from.

El punto entre lo legal e ilegal

Hasta que fui mayor, yo no entendía que era la piratería. Jamás se me pasó por la mente que ir a un vendedor ambulante y comprarle una copia más económica que en una tienda original, estaba mal y era un delito ¡Nunca ví a alguien preso por esta infracción y que podíamos ir a la cárcel! En mi país era algo normal esta práctica sin ninguna consecuencia.

Creo que aquí es donde comienza esta historia a tener sentido, entre lo que esta bien y lo que no. Para Enrrico (nuestro personaje principal), su sueño era ser dj. Eso era lo único que le importaba para salir de la pobreza. mezclar sus canciones, ser famoso, mostrar su talento, pero como muchos, las oportunidades eran limitadas; particularmente no le encuentro nada de malo en tener anhelos y aspiraciones, solo que el sistema es muy cruel incluso para los que tienen talentos.

Si nos basamos en que él grababa las canciones, les ponía su toque personal y las vendía ¿Cuál delito estaba cometiendo? Eso no me quedaba muy claro, porque entonces pensemos en los dj de hoy en día que llegan con su música a todos lados y le ponen su toque personal. No creo que esten cometiendo algún tipo de ilegalidad porque sino, todos irían presos.

Pero si veo un punto que me pregunto ¿Dónde quedan las disqueras? porque siguiendo con mi cuento, recuerdo que los cd´s quemaditos, hasta tenían una portada (impresa también) que decía "Se prohíbe su reproducción total o parcial..." ahora entiendo cuanto descaro 😌.

Hablando de la película, el contexto se desarrolla en la ciudad de Nápoles- Italia y estos hermanos sumergidos en la pobreza y sin algún tipo de salida en sus vidas económicas, con problemas financieros, legales y con la familia creciendo, buscaron las estrategias para reproducir la música famosa en sus cassettes que eran distribuidos con la descripción en la firma de "Mixed By Erry".

En el momento, no había delito por lo que estaban haciendo, pero el dinero que estaban percibiendo los llevó a llamar la atención tanto de "los buenos como la de los malos" y allí las cosas comienzan a enredarse para ellos, a tal punto que toman decisiones en toda la película que los ayuda a sortear todas las trabas que se le presentan en el camino.

Estas operaciones de los hermanos Frattasio, llevan por su parte a las autoridades a crear operativos para atraparlos, volviendose una cacería estilo "el gato y el ratón", con el fin de poder acabar con las actividades ilícitas que hacían.

Eso me gusta porque el delito aun no estaba tipificado y de allí se desprende el desarrollo de la película.

Secondary issues

Living in Italy must be a paradise, because its history and culture seem endless, but life in that country must be very difficult due to the presence of mafias, drug trafficking, trafficking of materials, human trafficking, migration, wars, in short, it has many social problems that are reflected throughout the film that are also important to analyse.

Starting with the family nucleus. Within families, being a criminal or committing some kind of crime is something common. It is done jointly and everyone collaborates in carrying out the illicit plans. From childhood, everyone has a role within the organisation until they take the place of command.

It seems to be something cultural, something that proves loyalty and even at a certain point I thought it was "nice" that union, respect, hierarchy, love for the family and even for a while I said to myself "hey, how nice it would be to have a family with those values", but then I reflected and said that it's a crime! They are a family of blood and crime!

So this does not seem to me to be a good example for future generations who normalise everything that is wrong, that seems attractive, influential, that generates status, fame among others, even if we are doing the wrong thing. Again as a society we have problems, serious problems of adaptability and following rules.

Los temas secundarios

Vivir en Italia debe ser un paraíso, porque su historia y cultura parece interminable pero la vida en ese país debe ser muy díficil debido a la presencia de mafias, narcotráfico, tráfico de materiales, trata de personas, migración, guerras, en fin, tiene muchos problemas sociales que se ven reflejados a lo largo de la película que también es importante analizar.

Comenzando con el núcleo familiar. Dentro de las familias, ser criminal o cometer algún tipo de delito es algo común. Se hace de manera conjunta y todos colaboran en llevar a cabo los planes ilícitos. Desde la infancia, cada uno tiene un rol dentro de la organización hasta que toman el lugar de mando.

Pareciera que es algo cultural, algo probatorio de lealtad y hasta en cierto punto me parecia "bonito" esa unión, respeto, jerarquía, amor por la familia que hasta por espacio de tiempo me decía "oye que bonito sería tener una familia con esos valores", pero después reflexionaba y decía que ¡Es un delito! ¡Son familia de sangre y de delito!

Entonces esto no me parece un buen ejemplo para las generaciones futuras que normalizamos todo lo que esta mal, nos parece atractivo, influyente, nos genera status, fama entre los demás, así estemos haciendo lo incorrecto. Nuevamente como sociedad tenemos problemas, serios problemas de adaptibilidad y seguimiento de normas.

Do I recommend the film?

OF COURSE YES

I give it a 5/5

Because it's a new film, fun, based on a true story that brings us closer to the characters and thus we can investigate a little more of the context in which the opportunities for these brothers were given.

I also liked the dialogue, it was understandable everything that was happening. Another positive point is that it is one of those stories that starts from the end to the beginning, so it is good to know that "if they were caught", "they were saved", "who triumphed in the end" and I like that, because when you see the end, then it comes from where the story develops, it avoids having to suffer from anxiety during the whole film.

As for the scenes, they were adapted to the era, the costumes, the cars, the houses, the instruments they used, and as it is based on "technology", it is nice to see the equipment; it gave me nostalgia to see what I used one day and to know that 30 years have passed where we have advanced in other things and I think WOW! How we used to live like that 😅🤣 this makes it a good film to share anecdotes with friends and acquaintances of how you went through that whole decade of the mixed.

If it's about the characters, I don't know the actors, but both men and women did very well so it's nice to see new faces doing good things.

I didn't find any negative points as it is not boring, has no out-of-context situations, no sex scenes or brutality, no overrated inclusiveness and no tragic endings as might happen in mobster movies.

¿Recomiendo la película? CLARO QUE SÍ Le doy un 5/5

Porque es un cine nuevo, divertido, basado en una historia real que nos acerca a los personajes y así poder investigar un poco más del contexto en que se dieron las oportunidades para estos hermanos.

También me gustó el diálogo, fue entendible todo lo que iba transcurriendo. Otro punto positivo es que es de esas historias que comienzan del final al inicio, entonces es bueno saber que " si los agarraron", "se salvaron", "quién triunfó al final" y eso me gusta, porque al ver el final, después viene de donde se desarrolla la historia, evita andar sufriendo de ansiedad durante toda la película.

En cuanto a las escenas fueron adaptadas a la época, el vestuario, los carros, las casas, los instrumentos que usaban, y como es basada en "tecnología", es bonito ver los equipos; a mí me dio nostalgia ver lo que un día usé y saber que han pasado 30 años donde hemos avanzados en otras cosas y pienso ¡WOW! Cómo viviamos así 😅🤣 esto la hace una buena película para compartir en anécdotas con amigos y conocidos de cómo atravesaste toda esa década de los mixed.

Si es por los personajes, desconozco a los actores, pero tanto hombres como mujeres lo hicieron muy bien así que es muy agradable ver rostros nuevos haciendo cosas buenas.

No le encontré ningún punto negativo ya que no aburre, no tiene situaciones fuera de contexto, no contiene escenas de sexo o brutalidad, no estan pendiente de la inclusión tan sobrevalorada y no tiene finales trágicos como podría pasar en las películas de mafiosos.
