This drama film is based on the book Molly's Game written by Molly Bloom, which is autobiographical and narrates the life of the so-called Queen of Poker and the script was adapted by Aaron Sorkin, who was also the director and this represented his first work in this area.

The plot revolves around a woman who is a competitive skier and after a serious accident loses her participation in the Olympic Games and goes to live in Los Angeles, where after her recovery she works as a waitress and is hired as a hostess in clandestine poker games where opulent people of society and show business stars participate.

After being fired and getting to know players and the system, she ventures to create one of her own and begins her eight-year journey, during which time she becomes a multimillionaire. The lead role is played by Jessica Chastain nominated for an Oscar in 2011 for Best Supporting Actress for the film The Helph and 2012 for Best Actress for her role in Zero Dark Thirty, other participating actors are: Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Brian d'Arcy James, Chris O'Dowd, Bill Camp, Graham Greene, Claire Rankin, Joe Keery and Jeremy Strong.

It was premiered on September 8, 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the reception was good, even the critics praised the very well done adaptation work of the script and the performances of Idris Elba as Charlie, Molly's lawyer and Chastain, the best of his career according to some connoisseurs.

It was not a super success at the box office, grossing only Bs. 59 million, almost doubling its production budget of Bs. 30 million.

The screenplay was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe and the leading actress was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama in the latter.

This film shows the dark side of vice and how fragile the American justice system is in the face of events of this type, which even suggests a certain complicity in exchange for information regardless of the seriousness of the offense.

It is an entertaining film, with good photography, outstanding performances that fulfills its function of entertaining and also shows us the subject from an angle little exploited.

Molly's Game is my pick for this week's theme of femme fatale, a character based on what I consider a real-life femme fatale and a movie which I loved.

Molly's Game is a 2017 American biographical crime drama film written and directed by Aaron Sorkin starring the wonderful actress Jessica Chastain as the lead and Idris Elba as her co-star.

This is the true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic skier who after sustaining an injury had to quit her dreams and started working as a waitress in a night club, where she meets powerful men that introduce her to poker. Molly becomes so well-known in the poker world that she begins to run the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker games which included Hollywood and sports stars, business titans, and finally, the Russian mob.

The ties of her poker games to the Russian mob have her arrested, having to look for the lawyer Charlie Jaffey's help, sharing her story from the very beginning so he can defend her in court.

This is a fantastic movie and I've rewatched it multiple times! Jessica Chastain is amazing as the lead character, who is a very complicated a multilayered woman. I chose this movie for the femme fatale category because this is an extremely intelligent, smart, and quick-witted beautiful woman who uses her sexy charms as well as her cunning side to become rich and build an empire on Poker Games.

Molly isn't written as the perfect strong woman, but we can't help but admire everything that she accomplished and the many millions she was able to make. She also has a vulnerable side which is explored later on in the film, and Chastain is wonderful at delivering those scenes too, as we sympathize with our heroine as every piece of her empire collapses.

This film doesn't give you the time to get bored, the pacing isn't slow and always keeps you entertained with quick exposition, it's done in a stylish way, also having a great dialogue. The narration also seems very natural, which is very hard to accomplish.

Idris Elba works perfectly as the calm lawyer that sympathizes with Molly's story, his character greatly contrasting with hers. Michael Cera as Player X also does a wonderful job! Although the actor has clearly been typecasted as the nerdy genius type.

Molly's Game is so much more than a biographical film, it's also inspiring, portraying the life of a successful woman and how she climbs to the very top with only using her charm and how brilliant she is. This was definitely one of my favorite movies from 2017, I personally being really impressed because I watched it not expecting much, I wasn't even sure what the movie was about.

I strongly recommend you watch it if you haven't, I'm sure you'll have a great time!

  3. Molly's Game - Review (ENG - ITA)@serialfiller2243d

    Tunnel Wave.png

Jessica Chastain is an extremely underrated actress, at least by the general public. Her versatility is amazing and a movie like "Molly's Game" manages to enhance all her immense talents. Chameleon-like qualities that allow her to be credible both in the parts of a sexy poker princess and a brilliant woman rich in culture and intellectual passions. But in general it's all her filmography that speaks for her. A series of films that have seen her shine in the most disparate parts, without ever being out of place. In Molly's Game she manages to eclipse 2 excellent male performances brought to the screen by the good giant Idris Elba and the timeless Kevin Kostner. 2 great actors who here are sucked by the charisma and tenderness of Jessica Chastain. The whole film seems almost a side dish compared to his umpteenth performance, despite the fact that Aaron Sorkin's film is one step away from being excellent but stops at abundant sufficiency. A film that entertains well and sends out some nice messages without almost ever falling into banality.

  4. Molly's Game (Film): Review.@martinmcfly2682d

Recently I talked about the wonderful A Most Violent Year, and previously about the very good Miss Sloane, both share something in common with Molly's Game, the participation of Jessica Chastain. These, along with some other movies that I have not reviewed yet but in which she also acts and that I have seen, have shown me that she is a reliable actress, I will try to include more of her filmography on my list, if you know of any movie in which she participates and that is good, you can recommend it in the comments.

    ---

Year: 2017 Category: Biographical, Crime Drama. Director: Aaron Sorkin. Cast: Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Jeremy Strong, Chris O'Dowd, Bill Camp.

    Plot

The film follows Molly Bloom, who becomes the target of an FBI investigation that seeks to dismantle the empire of illegal poker he runs for Hollywood celebrities, athletes, businessmen and the Russian mafia.

    Opinion

The film starts in a great way, with a short introduction that keeps Jessica Chastain's voice-over, and then we go to the main story. In the film different temporal lines are developed, because it has a structure that is easy to understand when you are watching, but which will seem complicated when I explain it here.

On the one hand, we see some flashbacks about Molly Bloom, the protagonist, who show some passages of her childhood and youth when she was highly pressured by her father to always achieve success, and that teaches us how after an injury, Molly, who was being trained to be an Olympic athlete in skiing, ends her chance to continue in sports. Nevertheless she was still an intelligent young woman with high qualifications and a promising future.

With a personality strongly influenced by the pressure her father exerted in her youth Molly decides to become an independent woman, moves into the house of a friend where she sleeps on the couch while working as a waitress. When Dean Keith suddenly offers him a job as his personal assistant, much better paid, this being the one that will finally introduce Molly into the world of illegal poker organization, where movie actors, athletes and rich people with influence participate.

While all that is happening, the film makes constant jumps in time to the future, a future where Molly Bloom is being prosecuted for facts related to her performance in the world of illegal poker, where she had become an organizer and figure of relative importance.

Aaron Sorkin is in charge of the direction work, which is a magnificent experienced scriptwriter, but this time he is not only in charge of making the script but also directing his first film, and he does it very well, he does an acceptable job, not excellent, but good.

The acting work was good, it was the best of the film, especially what was done by Jessica Chastain, who still does not disappoint me, I have liked every one of the films that I have seen and that are starred by her. Other actors also make their appearance, such as Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Wax, Jeremy Strong, Chris O'Dowd and Bill Camp, each fulfilling different important roles to the development of the story and that relate directly to Molly, Chastain's character, as the father, the lawyer, the boss, the partner, and some clients.

In short, it is a good film, without necessarily being great, the best without doubt is the interpretation of Chastain, only for that it is worth seeing.

    Trailer

    Score

    7/10

Good film, with an acceptable address, a good script and solid performances. Personally I recommend it, although I do not consider that the film has anything special enough to be indispensable.

  5. Molly's Game: a pretty good true story@gooddream2955d

I have to admit I am a sucker for true stories because they are so much more interesting to me than fiction. This is likely why I prefer non-fiction books as well. I broke from my week of shocking Korean movies because needed something a bit less traumatising. The nightmares were just getting to be too much.

    MPW-121493.jpg

Molly's Game centers around the life of a quite talented woman who just happened to be good at everything. She graduated top of her class in undergraduate studies (I don't remember what it was in) and was a clear choice to be accepted to really any law school that she chose. She also was a world-class freestyle skier and was attempting to qualify for the 2002 Olympics where a one-in-a-million chance with equipment malfunction resulted in her having a nasty crash and of course eliminated her from the competition.

After the fall in the Olympic qualifiers she decided to instead move to Los Angeles to just whatever. By chance she ends up being an assistant to some Hollywood big-shot (he's a real jerk) who also happens to run underground poker games. She didn't know much about poker when she started and was basically just a bookkeeper and bartender who worked almost entirely for tips.

She finds out really quickly that she has a real knack for this as well and starts to organize her own private games and since her boss (the organizer of the games) is such a dick. She is soon running one of the most sought after poker games in L.A. Her clients included movie stars, producers, professional athletes, and other very wealthy people.

    molly_sg_0030c-5d014087-219f-4a52-84f6-891ad7d77b09.jpg

Some twist and turns occur and she ends up moving her operation to New York where she does the same thing. I was unaware of this, or even if it still true, but what she was doing isn't actually illegal. However, she accidentally gets mixed up with the wrong people, gathers the attention of the Russian mob and things start turning bad for her.

By her accidental association with the mob she also ends up getting indicted in connection to a RICO case. If you are not familiar with what this means it basically is something that was set up to fight mafias in the USA and it is not the kind of lawsuit you want to get wrapped up in because a lot of rights that a person would normally have when facing trial are eliminated. It's actually a pretty interesting topic and I am not doing it justice (no pun intended) in the description I have just provided.

Molly's game kind of drags in the middle, as though they were trying to come up with a way to make the film an hour and a half long. But stick with it, because it is actually a great story.

Kevin Costner is in it (and am I alone in saying I really like Kevin Costner?) but i think they are actually a little deceptive in putting his name so high up on the movie poster because he is only in the movie for about 8 minutes.

    Here's the trailer

The film did reasonably well gathering just over 50 million bucks. The critical response was mostly good and overall I would say that my review is going to be a little biassed since I prefer true stories. Overall, i give this one a 7.5 / 10.

  6. Molly's Game - Movie Review@coldsteem3095d

    image.png

Molly Bloom is a real person. Her brother, Jeremy Bloom, was a bit of a prodigy. Aside from being smart, Jeremy was a World Cup and Olympic Team USA skier. He is also the only Olympic Skier to ever be drafted by the NFL as well. He was drafted as a punt returner by the Philadelphia Eagles. Molly was alas a competitive skier. Her Olympic dreams were dashed following a freak accident during qualification. Every bit as driven as her brother (and just as smart), she intended to head to law school. But first, she would take a year off. That year turned into a dynasty of sorts. One that is chronicled in her books, as well as the recently released Molly's Game.

    image.png

Molly (Jessica Chastain) starts out in LA crashing on the couch of a friend. She works one night per weeks as a cocktail waitress and the rest of the week as an assistant to a real estate developer, Dean Keith (Jeremy Strong). Keith introduces Molly to a covert poker game he runs, using her to drive and recruit new clients to the game. Molly organizes and runs the games and is paid in tips. She learns everything she can about the game by watching the players, which includes a host of Hollywood elite. When Keith starts edging Molly out, she sets up her own game, with the aid of Player X (Michael Cera) who is a draw for the games. She builds her own clientele and is doing well. When she realizes that Player X has a shady set up with another player, she refuses to permit the conflict in her game. As a result, she loses it. Player X sets up a new game and cuts her out.

    image.png

Molly uses the money she has accumulated to set up a new, higher stakes game in New York. Things are going well until she recruits some Russians into the game. Russians she would later learn were Russian Mafia. She also has an FBI informant at her games. After one of her games is raided, Molly packs up, moves home and gets treatment for her drug and alcohol addictions. Two years later, she is indicted. Molly refuses to give up information she has on a host of Hollywood elite and other previous clients. In the end, she must decide whether to cooperate with the government, at the cost of her "name", or whether to plead guilty and face the full consequences of her charges. The choice is one of getting her five million dollars back and walking free or potentially spending 42 months in jail, forfeiting her money and losing certain rights associated with a felony conviction.

    image.png

Director Aaron Sorkin adapted this screenplay from Molly's book. He chose to tell the story in the form of flashbacks, beginning with Molly's arrest shortly after arriving back in Los Angeles to get back on her feet. It begins with Molly providing a flashback to her early days as a skier before bringing her back to the present, convincing a lawyer (Idris Elba) to represent her, even though she has no way to pay him his $250,000 retainer. Her conversations with the lawyer give us additional flashbacks that fill in the backstory. The film is done in clear segments that cleanly bounce between past and present. The result is an often face-paced film with a plethora of characters that fill in the blanks of a tabloid worthy story.

    image.png

My use of the term "tabloid" is not random. This story was juicy. It was the stuff TMZ pays good money for. Those points are hit upon many times in the film. Molly alleges to have turned down numerous offers for dirt, which is absolutely believable. Molly was running a secret poker ring that involved A-list actors and top sports and entertainment figures. It is impossible to imagine that she didn't see and hear things from a bunch of men drinking and playing poker. Not to mention her allegations in the movie that many of them sent her text messages that were potentially embarrassing. But the tabloid feel of this film still felt a bit cheap. Even when names weren't named. It wasn't bad, but it's not the type of film I normally seek out. I have to admit, I did enjoy it. The pacing and action were much better than I anticipated. And the characters were decent.

    image.png

Jessica Chastain is alluring. She was perfectly cast in this film. Showing just enough cleavage to get the red-blood running, her beauty merely enhanced her performance. Her character is strong and assertive. Yet she manages to have a soft spot that doesn't make her seem weak. It was a careful balance that she managed deftly. Michael Cera was decent as slimy Player X, although he's no Toby McGuire (the alleged said player). I like Chris O'Dowd, but not in this film. I didn't care for his character or performance. Idris Elba was excellent as Molly's lawyer. He was measured, but intense when needed. I have been around a lot of lawyers in my life and he comported himself with credibility. As a whole, I enjoyed the casting.

    image.png

Molly's Game runs well over two hours, but doesn't feel that long. The film received an R rating by the MPAA for mature content, although there is no nudity or murder. There is a limited amount of violence, gambling, drugs and alcohol. The subject matter of this film is geared more toward older audiences. Teens or better at least.

Molly's Game is already being nominated for awards. I can see the nomination for best adapted screenplay. I can see Idris being nominated for best supporting actor. But I really don't see Chastain as best actress. She was great. I love her. But there have been some amazing films this year with strong female leads. I enjoyed this film, but didn't love it. I could have waited for it on video. But a matinee works too. 7.5/10.
