Hello Scrobbles, how are you? Well, I'm happy to be here and contribute with a new post about the fascinating world of anime, manga, or comics. In this case, we're going to talk about a truly special anime. I won't give away any spoilers, because you absolutely have to watch this anime if you like the seinen genre and dark plots involving detectives and assassins. We're talking about MONSTER, one of the most epic works in anime and manga. This time, we'll analyze the anime, which is available on Netflix if you want to check it out. I highly recommend it; it's undoubtedly one of the most impressive narrative works in animation, and I'm not just saying that. I think many people agree that this work is especially poignant and unique, so let's begin.
I won't tell you the whole story, but I will tell you, it's foundations.
As I said above, I don't want to reveal anything to any reader, because I think it's a work worth seeing. This work by Urasawa-sensei is, for me, one of those that stays with you for life, that you can watch five times and always discover something new, analyze from so many points of view, and never tire of it. A story that seems simple, about the life of a Japanese neurosurgeon named Dr. Temma, who lives in Germany, working in a hospital in Düsseldorf, and is engaged to the hospital's daughter.
Everything seems perfect for this great doctor, until the day he decides to change the course of his actions to take responsibility for a unique and peculiar case of a child, a case that will change his life and transform him into a different person. From this point, the story unfolds, immersing the viewer in a narrative of pure mystery, psychological terror, despair, and a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel. This is how Dr. Temma will feel throughout the series, and it's the same feeling you, as the viewer, will experience and witness through the situations Dr. Temma faces.
A narrative full of mystery
Urasawa's work is undoubtedly very Hitchcockian. Inspired by the master of mystery, Urasawa immerses us in the darkest facets of Dr. Temma. He reveals the harsh realities of hospital policies and how these unleash a crisis based on patient preferences, making us feel the doctor's moral crisis on a very personal level.
Throughout the 78-80 episodes of the series, you never stop asking yourself questions about the characters. Clearly, Dr. Temma isn't the only character involved in this plot, so the intrigues and connections between the stories of seemingly separate characters gradually intertwine to unravel the mysteries presented in the series and its story.
I think one of the most impactful effects of Urasawa's narrative is the emotional connection between the mysteries posed by the characters and the lack of knowledge about themselves and others. None of them are what they seem or claim to be, and doing this narratively well, without being boring, predictable, or alienating the viewer, is quite a difficult task, and Urasawa achieves it perfectly.
Mature Art for Seinen
The animation is meticulous, clean, and an intricate work to emulate the linework and characters of Urasawa's manga. This mangaka has few works adapted into anime due to the difficult adaptation process and his often limited trust in animators, but in Monster, Urasawa's confidence in the studio and the work done is truly admirable.
There are no special effects, lightning, or lighting; we have firm, well-drawn lines, no deformed or faceless characters, solid colors, and completely organic and natural movement in the action unfolded by the characters in the series. Urasawa-sensei's supervision of this production was truly intricate, and you can learn more about it on his own YouTube channel.
A series to watch more than once
It seems unbelievable that we can watch a series more than once; it has to be exceptionally good, and I think this series meets that requirement. There are many mysteries, many things to think about, and an open, non-self-conclusive ending that lets the viewer's imagination soar after everything that has happened, leaving their mind searching for answers. Urasawa lets you imagine them.
The psychological and personal evolution and development of each character, their declines, climaxes, and strongest emotions are very well represented, as is the way their relationships are built throughout the timeline. We especially see very empathetic connections between Dr. Temma and other characters during his journey, as well as the obsessive relationship between him and his enemies.
If what I've said here hasn't convinced you enough to watch this anime, I'll still tell you that you should watch it. If you're still not convinced, look for other reviews, and I'm sure you'll only read good things, because it's undoubtedly one of the greatest anime works of our time. So, without spoilers, I'll leave you with the task of checking out this great work. If you've already seen it, let me know what you thought. See you in the next post.
