After having abandoned her for a few months where I focused on other things I decided to finish the first (and probably the only) season of Monsters At Work, as a consequence I felt that it was a good opportunity not only to briefly explain how I feel about her but also to reflect on the Monsters Inc franchise in general.
In fact, on several occasions I have already talked about both Monsters Inc, Monsters University (Its prequel) and of course Monsters At Work.
For me it has always been fascinating not only how these works are structured (where, far from being sequels in traditional terms, they work together as spin off, support them in the same universe and characters), but how dense they tend to be at the thematic level, with Monster University being probably the most raw and mature Pixar movie ever made.
If Monsters University was built as a prelude to one of the most iconic animated films of all time, using a familiar university environment as a transformation, while talking about the clash between innate talent and skills acquired through effort, Monsters At Work not only continues this idea organically, but manages to iron out the irregularities both films faced when evaluating their connections to each other.
For those who will forget, at the end of Monsters Inc we are left with a world of monsters that no longer believes in scares of children as a means of obtaining energy resources, demonstrating the superior efficiency of laughter for this very reason.
What for many could be a forgettable post-film gag (Reinforced by the fact that University ranks before all this and returns to scares as the main focus), is used in Monsters At Work to tell a story full of empathetic characters. and willing to raise many more questions that we as adults will easily reason with.
Welcome to post-scare Monsters Inc, a place where Tyler (our new protagonist) must face the stark reality: his abilities are obsolete.
Mixing elements of sitcoms like The Office with the physical comedy that one would expect from any Pixar work, in Monsters At Work we have a window to a world full of narrative possibilities, with many people fulfilling different roles beyond the "scarers" or "Pranksters" we already knew.
Perhaps this is the most positive point of the series, or at least the main attraction for those of us who grew up with the original film and years later we delight (or not) with its prequel, Monsters Inc feels like a real and functional company, with many gears necessary for it to exist and constant eagerness to show it to us.
Although the downgrade in terms of animation with respect to the films as well as the reduced presence of Mike and Sully can put back the most purists, the agility of their plots and the charisma of their characters manage to penetrate deeply into our hearts ... from then on everything is surprise after surprise.
Monsters At Work is far from being perfect but it takes full advantage of its own format, it does not extend more than necessary and knows how to expand what we have already seen starting from respect.
The version of myself that struggles with the labor market, the fear of being incapable and existing in a state of interrupted development was fascinated by the experience, a tender series that manages to be optimistic without taking its feet off the ground, even if we are talking about a fictious world.

Luego de haberla abandonado durante unos meses en donde me enfoqué a otras cosas decidí terminar la primera (Y probablemente la única) temporada de Monsters At Work, como consecuencia sentí que era una buena oportunidad no solo para explicar brevemente lo que siento por ella sino también para reflexionar sobre la franquicia de Monsters Inc en general.
De hecho, en varias ocasiones ya he hablado tanto de Monsters Inc, como de Monsters University (Su precuela) y por supuesto de Monsters At Work.
Para mi siempre ha sido fascinante no solo como se estructuran estas obras (Donde lejos de ser secuelas en términos tradicionales funcionan entre sí como spin off susténtalos en el mismo universo y personajes), sino lo densas que suelen resultar a nivel temático, con Monster University siendo probablemente la película de Pixar con un mensaje más crudo y maduro que se ha hecho.
Si Monsters University se construía como una antesala a una de las películas animadas más icónicas de todos los tiempos, usando como transformado un familiar ambiente universitario, a la vez que nos hablaba sobre el choque entre el talento innato y las habilidades adquiridas con el esfuerzo, Monsters At Work no solo continúa esta idea de forma orgánica, sino que logra limar las irregularidades que enfrentaban ambos filmes cuando se evaluaban sus conexiones entre sí.
Para aquellos que lo olvidaran, al final de Monsters Inc se nos deja con un mundo de monstruos que ya no cree en los sustos de niños como un medio para obtener recursos energéticos, demostrando la superior eficiencia de las risas para esto mismo.
Lo que para muchos podría ser un gag post-film olvidable (Reforzado por el hecho de que University se ubica antes de todo esto y vuelve a los sustos como foco principal), se usa en Monsters At Work para narrar una historia llena de personajes empáticos y dispuesta a generar muchas más preguntas con las que nosotros como adultos razonaremos fácilmente.
Bienvenidos a Monsters Inc post-sustos, un lugar en donde Tyler (Nuestro nuevo protagonista) se debe enfrentar a la cruda realidad: sus habilidades han quedado obsoletas.
Mezclando elementos de sitcoms como The Office junto a la comedia física que uno esperaría de cualquier obra de Pixar, en Monsters At Work tenemos una ventana a un mundo lleno de posibilidades narrativas, con mucha gente cumpliendo diversos roles más allá de los “asustadores” o “bromistas” que ya conocíamos.
Quizá este sea el punto más positivo de la serie, o al menos el atractivo principal para aquellos que crecimos con el film original y años más adelante nos deleitamos (o no) con su precuela, Monsters Inc se siente como una empresa real y funcional, con muchos engranajes necesarios para que exista y ansias constantes para mostrárnoslo.
Si bien el downgrade en términos de animación con respecto a los films así como la presencia tan reducida de Mike y Sully pueden echar para atrás a los más puristas, la agilidad de sus tramas y el carisma de sus personajes logran calar profundamente en nuestros corazones… de ahí en adelante todo es sorpresa tras sorpresa.
Monsters At Work dista de ser perfecta pero aprovecha totalmente su propio formato, no se extiende más de lo necesario y sabe ampliar lo que ya habíamos visto partiendo desde el respeto.
A la versión de mi mismo que lucha con el mercado laboral, el miedo a ser incapaz y al existir en un estado de desarrollo interrumpido le fascinó la experiencia, una serie tierna que logra ser optimista sin despegar los pies del suelo, aunque hablemos de un mundo ficticio.
