    Madre/Androide

    Director y Guionista: Mattson Tomlin

    [English Version]

Hello moviegoers, this time I want to share with all of you my opinion about a new production added to the Netflix catalog, it is a production that I overlooked when it was released on this platform, however, I have seen that several people like it while others say the opposite, it is for that reason that I decided to take a look at this production, analyze it and give my opinion from my point of view if it is good or bad, always with the question of whether or not it is worth investing time to see it, I hope to answer this question rightly.

This is a film that premieres on December 17, 2021 on the platform, later Netflix acquires international streaming rights. A 110-minute production that introduces us to a science fiction story, in combination with suspense as well as drama, it is perhaps a very well known story of cinema, but at first glance the production gives it a different approach, at least from a point of view of its main characters.

    Synopsis:

After a glitch, robots around the world reveal themselves against humans, androids programmed to perform various "human" tasks become deadly killers bringing the human race to the brink of extension. Georgia, a young pregnant woman who along with her boyfriend Sam must cross a path plagued by androids to seek refuge in a fortified city in order to save her family.

    Movie Analysis

    Story (Spoiler Free)

One of my favorite genres is science fiction, I think it makes fly the imagination of the author or filmmakers in this case, however, introduces us to a fairly repeated story of this genre, androids that are revealed against humanity, I think this trite story will always capture the attention, as I have written countless times in this community the difference is how the story is argued, its narrative and of course what we always expect to see, a touch of originality that surrounds us and keep us attentive to the plot.

    Source

A post-apocalyptic world but approached from another perspective, is the proposal of this story that although its environment is science fiction, it mixes some genres that can even bring a tear to the spectator's eye. The fact that the protagonist is pregnant in a world that is collapsing with death, maintains a sense of insecurity in the viewer, questions arise such as: How will she be able to get out of all this alive, will she be able to protect her baby, how can they give birth in this situation, are questions that will undoubtedly approach our head and that in a way will keep us attentive to what happens in the film.

    Source

It is a science fiction story that manages to attract the viewer through the feelings inherent in humanity, love, care and protection.

    Romance

If we look closely from the beginning of the sequence we are shown a love story, which develops throughout the production. From a very personal point of view, I do not like very strong love stories, perhaps if there were no killer androids in this film I would surely remove it after a few minutes, however, this love story is necessary for the message that the writer and director of this film wants to give us.

    Source

This romance seems a bit cloying at times, many scenes around this couple looking for their well-being for themselves and for the baby that the protagonist is carrying in her womb. I confess that at times I thought that these scenes were superfluous in the film, but we must reach the end of the film to understand what this film wants to show us, so these scenes and that feeling of union is necessary and adds value to the end of the film.

    Pace

The film begins with a slow pace, far from the typical killer android movies we all know, however, we can notice that it accelerates after half of the film developing even interesting and surprising plot twists, this change of course gives action to the film, an action that in my opinion was necessary for the plot and for the enjoyment of the film by the viewers. If that twist or the action scenes I think it would be a complete departure from what viewers were originally looking for when playing the film.

    Director and Screenwriter: Mattson Tomlin

To understand this film, its essence and that very distinct message near the end, we must get to know the director and screenwriter of this story. Sometimes I like to search the web about the director, after a quick search on the internet I must say that, knowing this director is good to properly appreciate the implicit message of the film and give more emotion to the film.

Mattson Tomlin, is a young director, but with a difficult childhood, born in Romania in a time of war, so his parents, unable to provide security among other basic needs, give him up for adoption to an American couple, spends much of his childhood in Boston, a very important city in the plot of this film.

    Source

We infer that this story has as a backdrop the science fiction genre, however, the real story is included in the center of the plot, his own childhood reflected in a post-apocalyptic world. Basically the director shows us his most hidden feelings of his difficult childhood, what perhaps he thinks his parents felt, which he never had the opportunity to see, running away from danger always thinking about the little boy who later becomes a director to tell his own story hidden in the science fiction genre, this seems to me something really fascinating and that we must take into account to understand the message of the story.

    Source

Mattson Tomlin, is a man with a difficult childhood, so I am not surprised that we will see other productions of this young director of 31 years, in fact, he is working with a production quite expected by many of us, it is Batman (2022), a film directed by Matt Reeves, but with help Mattson Tomlin among the screenwriters, another reflection of himself, we know the stormy childhood of this character, it impacts him directly to be Batman.

    Score:

    7.6 ⭐️

    Final Opinion.

I am a father, this probably makes me see the story from another point of view that touches more significantly my emotions, I think that family message and protection is something that enhances the film at the end, where probably the story of killer androids is relegated to the background. Although it is not a film that stands out I appreciate this art, as a painter conveys his emotions in the painting, the director captures his own story in a film, something that I find applaudable, I imagine Mattson Tomlin crying in some scenes, remembering what his parents must have felt and all that causes being born in a world at war.

    Source

It is a film that may not seem so entertaining at first, even the title itself does not seem so striking for a science fiction production, however, it manages to adequately convey the message in a story that develops for the better as the minutes go by. Although it is not a film of great importance, in my opinion it fulfills the entertainment and some reflection for the viewer.

    Do I recommend it?

Yes, I had my doubts about this film, even at the beginning of the movie I still had those doubts, however, the film manages to entertain and can even make us cry, I imagine that the feeling of a mother watching this film is greater, so I recommend it openly, inviting you to watch it until the end to reflect and at the same time be grateful for what we have that, although it seems simple, many people would like to have.

  2. Mother/Andriod: An Android Apocalypse@wolfofnostreet1631d

Mother/Android is a post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi thriller released on Netflix two days ago and it stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Algee Smith and Raul Castillo. It was written and directed by Mattson Tomlin and this happens to be his directional debut.

    image.png image source

    The Plot

Georgia finds out she's pregnant and she's not very pleased as she has doubts about her relationship with her boyfriend, Sam. He tries to console her but that doesn't help. On his way out of Georgia's parents' house, the family android wishes him a happy Halloween and Sam points out it's Christmas and not Halloween.

Georgia and Sam both go to a Christmas party and as they begin another fight, a glitch happens. An android at the party becomes violent and attacks people, smartphones explode and the streets become chaotic as androids attack and kill the humans.

Months later at almost her delivery date, Georgia and Sam are in the forest trying to find a way to get to Boston where they will get a boat to take them to Korea, without encountering the androids.

    My Thoughts

So humans build these robots that are meant to serve them and they don't expect a zombie-like apocalypse? They didn't see that coming? If you're giving advanced robots full access to your life wouldn't you except a malfunction and then a takeover?

It got me thinking about what would happen if google and apple decides to take over the world. They have access to a lot of our information already so we might as well be ready for an android apocalypse. Anyway this wouldn't be possible in my country because we don't even have good internet in the first place.

This movie looks like parts of different post-apocalyptic movies I've seen before and there's not really a lot to the story but what I loved was how intense it was. There's a very emotional side to this story that makes it a good movie in my books. I actually cried at the end of the movie because a mother-child bond always gets me.

I have several questions though. What was special about Korea that made the androids spare them? They wanted to take over the world but somehow Korea was an exception. I think the Korean boy-band BTS might have something to do with this.

In the scene where Georgia was trying to turn on the EMP, what manner of strength did she have to ward off the androids that were trying to push down that gate?

Also, in this very advanced world where there are robots that are indistinguishable from humans, why did everything else look normal? There wasn't any other sign that technology had advanced much aside from these robots.

Why the title Mother/Android? I'd be comfortable with Mother vs Android because I just don't get this title.

There was no ground-breaking part of the story but still, it had a bit of suspense and it was intense as I earlier stated. I liked the picture theme and the cinematography in general. I also liked the CGI or whatever technology that was used on the androids, there was the right amount of gore too.

The cast did a great job and Chloe Grace Moretz was excellent in her role as Georgia, I can't say the same for the Sam guy. Raul Castillo did a good job as a villain, I saw him in another movie right after I finished this one and he's a good actor generally.

I didn't really like the end as I felt it could have been more. Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Have you seen it yet? What do you think?

    Rating - 7/10
