"My Mister" (2018): A Sweet Beginning that Leaves a Deep Mark@leemah1218d
I love watching movies and Korean movies are not exception and When it comes to Korean dramas, they have the habit of starting off with a lighthearted tone before quickly diving into deep emotional territory. I just finished watching My Mister today and even though it was an old movie (it's dated back to 2018), it really amazing. A series that starts with a seemingly simple premise but evolves into an exploration of the complexities of life, relationships, and personal healing.
At first, the movie seem like just another drama about unlikely friendships, but later, it follows the relationship between Park Dong-hoon, a middle-aged man burdened by life's pressures, and Lee Ji-an, a young woman carrying the weight of her own struggles. They both have the problem they are facing with different emotions. Ji-an is working as a contract employee at a construction company, while Dong-hoon is her supervisor. Their interactions are awkward at first, as they try to navigate the professional hierarchy while dealing with their personal issues. Ji-an is cynical, distrustful of others, and seemingly cold-hearted, while Dong-hoon is kind, reserved, and grappling with a stagnant life.
Their relationship begins with small moments of kindness as Dong-hoon helping Ji-an with a work issue, Ji-an gradually opening up to his gentle demeanor. These simple moments are what create the sweet foundation of the drama, one where two lonely souls begin to slowly connect, offering each other solace amid their struggles. It’s heartwarming to see how their bond evolves from mutual respect to something much more significant.
However, as the story unfolds, The movie transit into a profound examination of trauma, emotional healing, and the burdens that people carry in silence. Ji-an, with her difficult past and ongoing hardships, starts to break down the walls around her. Dong-hoon, in turn, reveals the painful fractures in his own life, including an unhappy marriage and a strained relationship with his family. What begins as a simple relationship based on mutual support grows into a beautiful, complex connection that allows both characters to confront their inner demons and struggles.
This drama shows us the family dysfunction, economic hardship, and the emotional scars that people hide from the world. Yet, it’s through their quiet, unassuming connection that both Ji-an and Dong-hoon find the strength to begin healing. There’s no grand romantic gesture, no over-the-top declarations of love, just two people offering each other the most genuine form of companionship.
My Mister ultimately leaves a deep impact on me simply because it shows that sometimes, the most powerful relationships are not those built on romance or dramatic circumstances but on mutual understanding, patience, and emotional support. The quiet, tender moments shared between Dong-hoon and Ji-an are some of the most moving in K-drama history, as they offer a realistic portrayal of how people can help each other grow, heal, and find meaning in life.
Even though it started with a sweet beginning but later gives way to a deeper, more resonant message about human connection and the possibility of finding peace even in the most difficult times. From this movie, I learnt that sometimes, healing doesn’t come in the form of grand gestures or quick fixes. It’s about small acts of kindness, patience, and allowing others to see us for who we truly are, scars and all. It start sweetly, but it stays with me long after the final episode.

Dare to say, it's better to watch this drama once than to listen to 10 sermons.

This is a life drama I personally enjoyed very much.
It is a drama like romance, not romance, but unlike other dramas, the atmosphere is quite dark and heavy.
However, what the drama contains is a very heartwarming and moving story.
Although it has been two years since it was aired, the classic sensibility and message that penetrates the essence of life without the trend of the times, It was enough to change my mind, and behavior.
There was a deep resonance.
It is a drama that I want to see at least once when people are tired of life or are struggling with human relationships.
The drama 'My Mister' is a story in which the three brothers and a woman who have lived roughly with the weight of their lives heal their lives through each other.
Beyond the humanistic element that simply smells like a person
What a person is,

Furthermore, how to live your life,
It is shown through the relationship and life of the characters in the drama.
In the drama,'Lee Ji-an' is the head of a granddaughter in her twenties who suffers from poverty and a violent loan shark (Kwang-il) and supports her grandmother alone.
She works as a a dispatched occupation during the day and part-time at night, struggling to pay off the debt she has left her.
Another protagonist,'Park Dong-hoon', is the head of the safety diagnosis team at the company where Jian is attending.
Rarely these days, he is a clean person with no flaws.
Then, a mysterious gift certificate is delivered to him.
Although Donghun has lived cleanly, he remembers his brother's unfortunate circumstances and puts it in a drawer.
Watching this, Jian steals the gift certificate and throws it away in order to pay off her debt, and in the process, she gets caught up in a case with Park Dong-hoon.
In fact, the gift certificate was a bribe from a political fight within the company.
The bribe to defeat Park Dong-woon was wrongly delivered to Park Dong-hoon.
In the process, the company's political fight ignited, Jian stood on the side of the CEO and received money.
It plans to defeat Managing Director Park Dong-woon and Director Park Dong-hoon who noticed the existence of a bribe.
To this end, Jian installs a wiretapping app on Donghoon's mobile phone and listens to his every move.
And by listening to Donghoon's real life, Jian becomes immersed in emotions for the first time in the lives of others.
The sound of a sigh mixed with the weight of life being crushed, the sound of footsteps as if reading the direction of life, and a voice that seemed to be suppressed somewhere.
Jian gradually feels compassion as he listens to the life of Park Dong-hoon, who endures every day like a sincere life imprisonment without any hope and meaning of life.

At first, Jian can't believe Donghun's consideration and favor.
She thinks he seems to be doing well because of his compassion for herself.

However, the more Ji-an meets Dong-hoon and hears Dong-hoon's life, the more he realizes that Dong-hoon's consideration of helping him is sincere.
Donghun was sincere to Jian.
Structural designer Donghun found, diagnosed and designed not only the wounds and cracks of the building, but also the wounds and cracks of the ground.
He gave Jian the strength of his inner strength.
