Yesterday I was watching a movie that was recommended right here in this community, and the truth is that it really surprised me. I knew I was going to like it because despite my age, I really enjoy watching animated movies, especially when they leave a beautiful message that invites you to reflect.
Ayer estuve viendo una película que estuvieron recomendando precisamente aquí en esta comunidad, y la verdad es que me sorprendió muchísimo, sabía que me iba a gustar porque a pesar de mi edad yo disfruto mucho viendo películas animadas, sobre todo cuando dejan un bonito mensaje que te invita a reflexionar.
This film tells the story of two little sisters (Satsuki and Mei) who live with their father in the countryside. At first, we don't see their mother, but that's because she was in the hospital. Since the house is new, the girls begin to discover things that catch their attention, but what definitely surprised them were the Totoros (as the sweet and innocent Mei, the youngest of the girls, calls them), mythical creatures, like a kind of elves that live in the forest, especially a very large one with which they establish a deep friendship. This creature teaches them incredible and wonderful things it can do through its magic, such as making a garden grow in one night and even taking them to see their mother in the hospital aboard an unusual bus shaped like a giant cat.
Esta película nos cuenta la historia de dos hermanitas (Satsuki y Mei) que viven con su padre en el campo, al inicio no vemos a la madre, pero eso se debe a que ella estaba internada en el hospital. Como la casa es nueva, las niñas comienzan a descubrir cosas que llaman su atención, pero lo que definitivamente las sorprendió fueron los Totoros (así los llama la dulce e inocente Mei, la más pequeña de las niñas), unas criaturas míticas, como una especie de duendes que viven en el bosque, en especial uno muy grande con el cuál ellas entablan una relación de profunda amistad. Esta criatura les enseña cosas increíbles y maravillosas que puede hacer a través de su magia, como hacer crecer un huerto en una noche y hasta llevarlas a ver a su madre en el hospital a bordo de un autobús inusual en forma de gato gigante.
This film reminded me a bit of the style of Gabriel García Márquez, the Colombian writer, who often resorted to magical realism to tell his stories. In this case, elements are used that I assume are typical of Japanese folklore, but we see them immersed in the film as if they were part of the everyday and not the extraordinary. However, at the same time, it is all this that makes the girls live in an innocent and happy environment that helps them cope with their mother's illness and the separation from the family. The father, however, is the one who carries the greatest burden; obviously, as an adult, he must work, deal with problems, face his wife's illness. But the most admirable thing of all is that he carries that burden with gallantry, without losing his temper, taking care of his daughters and keeping them happy despite everything.
Esta película me recordó un poco el estilo de Gabriel García Márquez, el escritor colombiano, que recurría al realismo mágico para contar sus historias a menudo, en este caso se usan elementos que supongo son propios del folclore japonés, pero los vemos inmersos en la película como si formaran parte de lo cotidiano y no de lo extraordinario, no obstante a su vez es todo esto lo que hace que las niñas vivan en un entorno inocente y feliz que les ayuda a sobrellevar la enfermedad de su madre y la separación de la familia. El papá sin embargo es el que lleva la carga mayor, obviamente, por ser el adulto, debe trabajar, lidiar con los problemas, enfrentar la enfermedad de su esposa, pero lo más admirable de todo es que sostiene esa carga con gallardía, sin perder el temple, haciéndose cargo de sus hijas y manteniéndolas felices a pesar de todo.
He never gets to see Totoro, but in a way, there's a connection between him and the childlike, innocent world his daughters live in. Perhaps it's due to his respect for nature and the beautiful way he expresses himself when referring to it. My favorite line was when he said, "Trees and people used to be good friends." This refers to the fact that there was a time when humans were aware that they were part of nature and needed it, so there was a great respect for it because they knew it couldn't exist without its environment.
Él no llega a ver a Totoro pero de cierta manera existe una conexión entre él y ese mundo infantil e inocente en el que viven sus hijas, quizá se deba a su respeto por la naturaleza y la forma tan bonita en la que se expresa refiriéndose a ella. Mi frase favorita fue cuando él dijo "Los árboles y las personas solían ser buenos amigos" Esto se refiere al hecho de que hubo un momento en el que el hombre era consciente de que formaba parte de la naturaleza y la necesitaba, así que había un gran respeto por ella, porque sabía que no puede existir sin su entorno.
The ending seemed extremely encouraging to me, the family reunited again, renewed hope, smiles, everything, all this thanks to Totoro helping the girls carry the burden to avoid the traumas of the challenges that this family faced, the figure of the mother is fundamental in a home, that is why her absence is felt so much, but the father knew how to manage the balance between his work and the responsibility of taking the reins of his home, while taking care of his wife while she was in the hospital, and I like this because it shows that men are also sensitive and that good fathers exist, warriors and multifunctional men, capacities that have always been attributed exclusively to women for some time now.
El final me pareció sumamente alentador, la familia nuevamente reunida, la esperanza renovada, las sonrisas, todo, todo esto gracias a que Totoro ayudó a las niñas a sobrellevar la carga para evitar los traumas de los desafíos a los que se enfrentaba esta familia, la figura de la madre es fundamental en un hogar, por eso se siente tanto su ausencia, pero el padre supo manejar el equilibrio entre su trabajo y la responsabilidad de llevar las riendas de su hogar, al tiempo que cuidaba de su esposa mientras estaba en el hospital, y esto me gusta porque demuestra que los hombres también son sensibles y que existen los buenos padres, hombres guerreros y multifuncionales, capacidades que siempre se le han adjudicado exclusivamente a las mujeres desde hace un tiempo para acá.
In the end, I was left with a big smile and a tremendous desire to see this beautiful film again.
