  1. Film Review: Mystic River (2003)@drax945d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Clint Eastwood as director in past few decades enjoyed great favour among critics. This might be explained with his film giving impression that their author, consciously or unconsciously, tried to distance himself from the iconic image of macho action star and simplistic world view based on violence, vigilante justice and everything that critics associated with the troglodyte right wing mindset. The best known example of this transformation is Eastwood’s Oscar-winning revisionist western Unforgiven. Another example can be found in his 2003 crime drama Mystic River.

The film is based on the eponymous 2001 novel by Dennis Lehane. Plot is set in contemporary Boston. It begins with prologue set in 1975 when three boys from Irish American neighbourhood – James “Jimmy” Markum (played by Jason Kelly), David “Dave” Boyle (played by Cameron Bowen) and Sean Devine (played by Connor Paolo) – are approached by two men claiming to be undercover policemen. Jimmy and Sean escape, but Dave is taken away and appears four days later after surviving rapes and unimaginable abuse. Decades later three boys are still friends but their lives have taken completely different path. Sean (played by Kevin Bacon) became Massachusetts State Police detective, while Jimmy (played by Sean Penn) owns convenience store. Dave (played by Tim Robbins), despite having a job and family, never properly recovered from his ordeal. One night Jimmy’s daughter Katie (played by Emmy Rossum) gets murdered, and on the same night Dave appears at his home bloodied and injured and tells his wife Celeste (played by Marcia Gay Harden) with a tale that he fought off a mugger. Sean investigates Katie’s killing and clues appear that Katie knew her killer. At the same time, Jimmy, unhappy with the pace of investigations, use connections from his own criminal past to conduct investigation of his own, determined to bring his own brand of justice. Since Celeste happens to be cousin of Jimmy’s wife Annabeth (played by Laura Linney) it is only a matter of time before Jimmy connect the dots and exact terrible vengeance on childhood friend.

Eastwood directs film without appearing in front of camera, and it was more than proper decision, since there simply weren’t good enough roles in Brian Helgeland’s script for the actor in his age. If Eastwood was a little bit younger, he could have played at least some of the main trio of characters and at least some of those roles would fit well within his iconic appearances in 1970s westerns, with tightly knit and crime-infested Irish Catholic neighbourhood of Boston with its own views on justice looking very much like the Wild West. Yet Mystic River also functions as conventional crime film, with whodunnit murder mystery working as a basis for powerful drama and excellent set of character studies. Eastwood embraces this conventionality and directs film in simplistic old-fashioned style, which some might see as a reason why Mystic River with its more than two hours of running time seems slightly overlong.

Nevertheless, those two hours are also an excellent opportunity to see Eastwood employ some of the greatest acting talent of its time. Sean Penn is great as father who has been suppressing lifetime of anger and his own criminal past, only to, just like the protagonist of Unforgiven, succumb to them when faced with deep personal loss. Tim Robbins is even more impressive in the role of the man permanently crippled by unimaginable childhood traumas that would ultimately defeat all his efforts of achieve adult normalcy and lead him towards the irrational path that ends in tragedy. Penn delivered another intense performance that would win him Oscar for Best Actor, while Robbins deservedly won Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Those two grand performances have overshadowed almost anyone else, including Kevin Bacon as nominal protagonist. Only two women in cast stand out – Marcia Gay Harden as Dave’s wife whose naivety would inadvertently spark tragedy and Laura Linney who near the end serves as the closest this film has a villain. Mystic River is, like Unforgiven, very dark and depressive film in which bad circumstances and misunderstandings conspire to have the worst possible outcome. Despite that and despite the ending some critics found a little bit too ironic, Mystic River is one of Eastwood’s best films and one of the most powerful Hollywood dramas of early 21st Century.

    RATING: 8/10 (+++)

Hi hive, today I come to talk about a movie that my father recommended me a few days ago, as I was quite bored I decided to watch it, I was quite surprised and I feel that there are aspects worth highlighting, so that's why today I want to talk about Mystic River.

Mystic River is a drama film released in 2003, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon and Tim Robbins. The movie shows us a group of old friends who cross paths again due to an unfortunate event and they all want to know the truth behind this event. Having given a bit of context, let's get started!

First I always like to start talking about what I love the most and in this case without a doubt is the direction and pace of this film, from the beginning it feels quite "dark" and dense, as the plot progresses we can see how at times these feelings intensify, using this to its advantage to create tension but at the same time to immerse us more in the film and what is being shown to us.

The story is incredible, the way in which each of the characters are presented to us, how they relate and how they meet again, also how they put together the investigation, they are sinking ends to the end obviously find a great plot twist when all the pieces fit together. sincerely when I started watching this movie I had not read anything about it so I was waiting, and by the name I expected something else, but I was not disappointed at all.

As for the performances obviously I have no complaints, especially with the protagonists who all do an excellent job and you can tell that they inject a personality quite marked to each of these people, so I consider this cast is perfect, as they definitely meet and do what they have to do.

If you have to be clear that it is a somewhat "complex" film in the sense that I recommend paying enough attention, that is to say that I feel that to enjoy it as it should be you have to sit 100% to watch the movie, without many distractions to enjoy the small details.

To be honest I have not had the opportunity to see many Clint Eastwood movies, there are very few that I have been able to see, but without a doubt this is one of my favorites, I managed to catch me from beginning to end, I would not expect anything less from such a renowned director, but honestly mystic river is an extremely engaging film.

In conclusion mystic river seems to me a great movie, you can tell that it is well written and if we mix that with a great direction we will certainly find a fairly complete film and indeed it is the case, because although it lasts a little over two hours, the need to want answers makes us be hooked from beginning to end, totally recommended!

  4. Mystic River (2003)@minhajulmredol1415d

I was mentally down, nothing was feeling right, I mean I was finding everything boring. I was so down that I didn't have any energy to find a movie and start watching. Movies work like magic to cheer me up, a good movie can pull me out of any kind of shit. Well, I was lucky to find one available, just a click ahead to be played. And yes, I asked for a coffee and started watching. With a coffee and this one, my whole mood is on track again. Need to finish this writing and complete the pending works too.

Mystic River is a Crime-Drama genre film. This one is directed by Clint Eastwood. The base of the movie is from a novel written by Dennis Lehane in 2001 that goes with the same name.

The story starts with three boys, who are friends and were playing together, and one of them named as Dave gets kidnapped, and sexually molested, later he gets escaped from there. The rest of the story is set after twenty-five years from this incident.

So Jimmy, one of those three friends, his daughter goes missing. Sean, another friend of that trio, who is a detective now looks into that case. They somehow find her being murdered so Jimmy and Sean both of them get in searching for the murderers in their own ways. Well, Jimmy was the strongest of those three, in his childhood, and even now, he had friends with the name "Savage brothers" whom many feared.

Let's cut things short, Dave was the prime suspect of all, he did murder someone on the same night which he confessed to his wife and was hiding the injuries he had suffered while executing that killing. We get many back stories about Jimmy and others too, he wasn't a saint, he did robbery and got imprisoned for that, another suspect was Katie's boyfriend, his father had some clash with Jimmy too, so he had the motives too.

Actually, it's a crime movie, when a crime is executed then there are many suspects, evidence, and leads that call for a decision to be executed. We saw how someone's dark past could influence. Can you imagine a situation where three childhood friend, one of them is suspected of the murder of another friend's daughter, what will they do if he is truly the murderer? Throughout the whole movie, I really liked Jimmy's performance, played by Sean Penn, a father who loved his daughter the most, for which he can go to any extent. Actually, that's what every father does and we got to experience that but what did it cost while doing so? Let's leave that as a mystery for you. And yeah, the character of Dave Boyle was really confusing as per the story, I mean he really messed up, not his good performance but it was his character that made this impression, which was played by Tim Robbins.

The ending of the movie is really amazing. If we step aside then we get a quote in the end by Jimmy's wife, "A king knows what to do and does it. Even when it's hard." Many thoughts were moving around about what's good and bad at that ending, keeping that judgment aside I was really impressed by the spirit of the character which goes with this quote.

Few points might feel confusing but I was finding it hard to explain the thoughts with the plot without spoiling it. One in line, I loved the movie, would surely love to rate it 8 out of 10, and already recommended a fellow movie freak like me, hehe. Looking for a crime genre movie? Go for it.
