Saludos a todos los miembros de la comunidad, ¿cómo se encuentran? No sé qué tienen las series de zombies surcoreanas que simplemente me siento atraída hacia ellas y termino, aunque sin poner mucha oposición, frente a la televisión dispuesta incluso a desvelarme haciendo maratón si es que tengo la fortuna de que todos los capítulos están disponibles, como fue el caso cuando me encontré con Newtopia. La forma en la que llegué a ella es muy común, pues hoy en día es difícil escapar a la promoción de cualquier cosa a través de las redes sociales, y justo cuando me encontraba pasando el rato en Instagram, salió un fragmento de la serie que me llamó bastante la atención, tanto que ignoré el spoiler y me fui a buscarla.
La serie tarda un poco en meternos en la escena zombie, pero vale por completo la pena, ya que se centra primero en mostrarnos a quienes serán nuestros dos protagonistas. Esto hace que cuando entre el conflicto más grande, podamos sentir todo lo que implica para ellos y gran parte de los retos que deben asumir para sobrevivir. Por un lado, tenemos al soldado Lee Jae-yoon (Park Jeong-min), a quien las cosas no le están resultando bien en su destacamento, mostrándose un poco como un incompetente que no tiene lo necesario. Y por el otro lado, tenemos a Kang Young-ju (Jisoo), su novia de hace años y con quien está teniendo problemas porque no saben cómo manejar eso de la distancia inevitable de que él esté prestando su servicio miliar.

En este punto, quizá se encuentren como yo cuando comencé a verla, preguntándose en dónde están los zombies, pero la realidad es que esta serie no es como las demás que he visto, en el sentido, de que se centra más en el género de comedia romántica. Tenemos a los zombies y esa lucha por la supervivencia, elementos que se desarrollan muy bien en el transcurso de la serie, sin embargo, la trama argumentativa sigue la línea de un par de novios que desesperadamente quieren encontrarse de nuevo en medio del caos y estarán atraverando un sinfín de situaciones adversas para tratar de conseguirlo. Pasamos de ese deseo de sobrevivir, al deseo de sobrevivir porque quieren estar el uno al lado del otro, y el humor prevalece por encima de todo.
Creo que por eso no pude dejar de verla hasta que la terminé, el desarrollo se sienta tan fresco y de cierta manera realista que da gusto, porque de ocurrir un apocalipsis zombie, ¿a quién le importa por qué está pasando todo eso? ¿A quién le importa el mundo? Lo más probable es que nos preocupemos es por las personas que amamos, por estar juntos a pesar de la tragedia, y haríamos hasta lo imposible por reunirnos de nuevo. Además, tampoco es como las otras series de zombies donde los personajes van en plan Rambo y matan a todos los zombies sin que se les mueva un cabello, acá tenemos a gente que está asustada, grita y se vuelve frenética sin saber qué hacer, y así tratan de solucionar todos los obstáculos.

Quizá allí entraría una de mis pocas críticas, y es que a llegó a volverse estresando este tipo de comportamiento, porque llevas unos cuantos capítulos, y todavía tienes a los mismos personajes gritando y volviéndose locos con situaciones que si bien entiendes en la vida real pasaría lo mismo, no permite como desarrollar muy bien una conversación entre los personajes, sobre todo Lee Jae-Yoon y Ra In-Ho que tienen una personalidad bastante particular, porque se está hablando de una cosa y repentinamente comienzan a desvariar. Cuando otro personaje les dijo que se comportaran, aplaudí hasta que se me cansaron las manos. Creo que abusan un poco de ese estilo del humor de lo absurdo que tiende a cansar, pero al mismo tiempo es bastante común en las producciones surcoreanas.
Ahora, algo que no sabía, porque la verdad no soy mucho de escuchar K-Pop, es que quien hace el papel de Kang Young-ju, es nada más y nada menos que Jisoo, integrante del grupo femenino surcoreano BLACKPINK. Debo admitir que me sorprendió mucho, sobre todo porque hizo un excelente trabajo capturando las emociones del personaje en cada etapa de la serie, sintiéndose natural y orgánico su progreso. Después entendí que no tiene mucho sentido sorprenderse tanto porque hay muchas personas de la industria del entretenimiento que hacen un poco de todo de una excelente manera, además de que investigando más me dí cuenta también que este no era su primer papel.

Estéticamente está cuidada, sacándole el máximo provecho a los escenarios donde se desarrolla la trama argumentativa, que no son muchos, pero eso no es necesariamente algo malo. Una gran parte de la serie transcurre en el hotel donde se encuentra la base de Lee Jae-yoon, por lo que la variedad la aportan las escenas de Kang Young-ju porque es la que se encuentra afuera cuando comienza la epidemia zombie y nos permite ver las calles infestadas, tiendas desiertas, autos destrozados, y finalmente la estación del tren, en donde transcurrirá la última parte. En general te hacen sentir dentro de ese universo que han creado, que es la idea, y no siento que le haya hecho falta nada en específico. Ya saben que me gustan las cosas lindas.
Si me preguntaran si la recomendaría, diría que sí, porque, aunque no es una obra maestra que les vaya a cambiar la vida, pues es una excelente opción para un maratón de uno o dos días, como hice yo. Te da zombies, peligro, supervivencia, combate, suspenso, y romance, de todo un poco, y si nos ponemos profundos, hasta podríamos decir que te deja un mensaje inspirador de reconocer lo que es verdaderamente importante en esta vida, ese estar al lado de las personas que amas y romper las barreras que te lo impidan. Pero igual preferiría no tener que pasar por un apocalipsis zombie para entender eso. Desconozco si habrá una segunda temporada, sé que hay personas que están pidiendo una, y no me molestaría poder seguir viendo el desarrollo de los protagonistas y de este grupo en una segunda temporada, pero no sé si lo que haya quedado inconcluso sea suficiente, más allá de querer profundizar en las explicaciones de la epidemia zombie.

I don't know what it is about South Korean zombie series that I simply feel attracted to them and I end up, although without putting much opposition, in front of the TV ready even to stay awake doing marathons if I have the fortune that all the chapters are available, as was the case when I came across Newtopia. The way I came across it is very common, since nowadays it's hard to escape the promotion of anything through social networks, and just when I was hanging out on Instagram, a fragment of the series came out that caught my attention enough, so much so that I ignored the spoiler and went looking for it.
The series takes a little while to get us into the zombie scene, but it's completely worth it, as it focuses first on showing us who our two main characters will be. This makes it so that when the larger conflict enters, we can feel everything it entails for them and much of the challenges they must take on to survive. On one side, we have Private Lee Jae-yoon (Park Jeong-min), to whom things are not going well in his detachment, showing himself to be a bit of an incompetent who doesn't have what it takes. And on the other side, we have Kang Young-ju (Jisoo), his longtime girlfriend with whom he's having problems because they don't know how to deal with the inevitable distance of his military service.

At this point, you may be like me when I started watching it, wondering where are the zombies, but the reality is that this series is not like the others I've seen, in the sense that it focuses more on the romantic comedy genre. We have the zombies and that fight for survival, elements that are developed very well in the course of the series, however, the plot follows the line of a couple of boyfriend and girlfriend who desperately want to meet again in the midst of chaos and will be going through a myriad of adverse situations to try to get it. We go from that desire to survive, to the desire to survive because they want to be by each other's side, and humor prevails above all else.
I think that's why I couldn't stop watching it until I finished it, the development feels so fresh and in a way realistic that it feels good, because if a zombie apocalypse happens, who cares why it's all happening? Who cares about the world? We would most likely care is about the people we love, about being together despite the tragedy, and we would go to great lengths to get back together. Besides, it's not like other zombie series where the characters go Rambo and kill all the zombies without moving a hair, here we have people who are scared, screaming and become frantic without knowing what to do, and so they try to solve all the obstacles.

Maybe that's where one of my few criticisms would come in, and that's that this kind of behavior became stressful, because after a few chapters, you still have the same characters shouting and going crazy with situations that in real life would be the same, but it doesn't allow to develop a conversation very well between the characters, especially Lee Jae-Yoon and Ra In-Ho who have a very particular personality, because they are talking about one thing and suddenly they start to rant and rave. When another character told them to behave, I clapped my hands until my hands got tired. I think they abuse a little bit of that style of humor of the absurd that tends to get tiring, but at the same time it's quite common in South Korean productions.
Now, something I didn't know, because I'm not really a K-Pop listener, is that who plays the role of Kang Young-ju, is none other than Jisoo, a member of the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK. I must admit that I was very surprised, especially because she did an excellent job capturing the character's emotions at every stage of the series, feeling natural and organic in her progress. Later I understood that there is not much point in being so surprised because there are many people in the entertainment industry who do a little bit of everything in an excellent way, plus doing more research I also realized that this was not her first role.

Aesthetically it is well cared for, making the most of the settings where the plot unfolds, which are not many, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A large part of the series takes place in the hotel where Lee Jae-yoon's base is located, so the variety is provided by Kang Young-ju's scenes because she is the one who is outside when the zombie epidemic begins and allows us to see the infested streets, deserted stores, smashed cars, and finally the train station, where the last part will take place. In general, they make you feel inside that universe they have created, which is the idea, and I don't feel that anything specific was missing. You know I like nice things.
If you were to ask me if I would recommend it, I would say yes, because, although it's not a life-changing masterpiece, it's an excellent choice for a one or two day marathon, like I did. It gives you zombies, danger, survival, combat, suspense, and romance, a little bit of everything, and if we get deep, we could even say that it leaves you with an inspiring message of recognizing what is truly important in this life, that of being by the side of the people you love and breaking the barriers that prevent you from doing so. But I would still prefer not to have to go through a zombie apocalypse to understand that. I don't know if there will be a second season, I know there are people who are asking for one, and I wouldn't mind being able to continue seeing the development of the main characters and this group in a second season, but I don't know if what has been left unfinished is enough, beyond wanting to go deeper into the explanations of the zombie epidemic.
