I was surprised again that the film world gave a chance again to a genre that seemed forgotten, I think there are many fluctuating ideas about this type of categories flying to be finally gestated. Horror for a child audience is hardly well seen, and there are few films that are bathed with these ideas, but I'm glad to find it again, and being made by a producer with a very long history of memorable series and films (and some not so much), I can say that it is a work that I liked; especially for being a fantastic horror story with a main character with whom I identified a lot.

Me sorprendió nuevamente que el mundo del cine le diera una oportunidad otra vez a un género que parecía olvidado, pienso que hay muchas ideas fluctuantes sobre este tipo de categorías volando para ser gestadas finalmente. El terror para un público infantil es difícilmente bien visto, y son contadas la películas que se bañan con estas ideas, pero me alegra encontrarlo nuevamente, y siendo elaborada por un productor con una larguísima trayectoria de series y películas memorables (y algunas no tanto), puedo decir que es un trabajo que me ha gustado; especialmente por ser una historia de terror fantástico con un personaje principal con el que me identifiqué mucho.

Nightbooks, is a supernatural horror film released in September of this year. It is primarily produced by Sam Raimi, along with Michelle Knudsen and Mason Novick through the film production company: Ghost House Pictures. It was directed by David Yarovesky and the screenplay was crafted by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, based on the novel by J.A. White. Starring Krysten Ritter as Natasha, Winslow Fegley as Alex and Lidya Jewett as Yazmin. The film was completed with a running time of 120 minutes and is distributed within the streaming platform for movies and series Netflix.

Synopsis

A boy obsessed with horror stories named Alex runs away from his Brooklyn apartment after overhearing an argument from his parents about his particular tastes. During his escape, he visualizes an open apartment where the TV in his living room is playing his favorite horror movie. Once inside, he finds a piece of pumpkin pie on the side, which puts him to sleep. Upon awakening, he finds himself inside a room where a malevolent and bizarre witch suddenly appears, threatening to kill him if he is of no use to her. Alex confesses that he is a writer of scary stories, which pleases the witch, now he must tell her a story every night if he does not want to be killed. In the apartment where he is held captive, he meets a girl named Yazmin, who is also trapped there. Together they devise a plan to escape from her captor if she doesn't realize his intentions first: will they both make it out alive?

Sinopsis

Un niño obsesionado con los cuentos de terror llamado Alex, huye de su apartamento en Brooklyn al escuchar una discusión de sus padres sobre sus gustos particulares. Durante su escape, visualiza un apartamento abierto donde el televisor de su sala transmite su película de terror favorita. Una vez dentro, encuentra a un lado un trozo de pastel de calabaza que lo pone a dormir. Al despertar, se halla dentro de una habitación donde de repente aparece una malévola y estrambótica bruja, quien amenaza con matarlo si él no le es útil a ella. Alex confiesa que es un escritor de cuentos de miedo, lo cual agrada a la bruja, ahora deberá contarle un cuento cada noche sino quiere ser asesinado. En el apartamento donde se encuentra cautivo, conoce a una niña llamada Yazmin, la cual también está atrapada allí. Juntos elaborarán un plan para escapar de su captora si es que ella no se da cuenta de sus intenciones primero: ¿Lograrán ambos salir con vida?

Personal opinion

As I was watching the film, I assimilated it as a reference to the famous fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm: Hansel and Gretel, and I wasn't so wrong, as the reference comes with a surprise at the end. The film is well elaborated, with a quite striking aesthetic assimilating other films of the past and with a powerful suggestive towards a new and fantastic world.

Already the trailer catches the attention and being this the month of horror, the production team couldn't wait to release this film before stepping foot in October. It's nice to see a person with a great track record working on the production, I mean Sam Raimi who has not brought memorable fantasy and horror series and movies like: Xena: Warrior Princess, the Spiderman trilogy (with Tobey Maguire) and Evil Dead (2013), he also worked as director of the highly anticipated Marvel movie: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will be released next year. It's exciting to see a children's horror film again, a genre that seemed extinct but is now back for our enjoyment, and that they managed to manage the elements to make it both thrilling and creepy.

I thought the cast was a gem, especially actress Krysten Ritter as Natasha, the witch, who gave it that touch of evil combined with grace, with a stylistic wardrobe that although it had no fashion sense, managed to grab me with her perverse personality. I think that Kryten's character should have been given more development, since she is a very versatile actress, but this detail did not disturb in any way the development of the well constructed plot.

Another performance that I really liked was that of Winslow Fegley, this little eleven year old knows how to perform in a terrifying environment, we have already seen him stand out in another horror movie called: Come Play. I identified with the character, especially for being a storyteller, with an imagination and creativity very unusual for a child of that age. At the end, together with his friend Yazmin, they expose a moral about mutual respect for others and their differences.

The style has the particularity of being adapted to our time, which contains a costume that looks like a walk through time. Many of the elements make people identify a little more with the characters. Particularly, I had a certain fondness for the villain; I mean, I couldn't hate her despite how bad she was, it must have been Krysten's captivating performance.

Opinión personal

A medida que iba viendo la película, la asimilé como una referencia al famoso cuento de hadas de los hermanos Grimm: Hansel y Gretel, y no estuve tan equivocado, pues la referencia viene con una sorpresa al final. El filme está bien elaborado, con una estética bastante llamativa asimilando otras películas del pasado y con una sugestiva poderosa hacia un mundo nuevo y fantástico.

Ya de por sí el tráiler llama la atención y siendo este el mes del terror, el equipo de producción no pudo esperar para estrenar esta película antes de pisar el mes de octubre. Es agradable ver a una persona con gran trayectoria trabajando en la producción, me refiero a Sam Raimi quien no has traído series y películas de fantasía y terror memorables como: Xena: Warrior Princess, la trilogía de Spiderman (con Tobey Maguire) y Evil Dead (2013), también trabajó como director de la tan esperada película de Marvel: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, la cual se estrenará el próximo año. Es emocionante ver nuevamente un filme de terror infantil, un género que parecía extinto pero ahora está de vuelta para nuestro disfrute, y que hayan sabido manejar los elementos para hacerla tanto emocionante como espeluznante.

El elenco me pareció una joya, especialmente de la actriz Krysten Ritter como Natasha, la bruja, quien le dio ese toque de maldad combinada con gracia, con un vestuario estilístico que aunque no tenía ningún sentido de la moda, logró atraparme con su perversa personalidad. Pienso que se debió darle más desenvolvimiento al personaje de Kryten, ya que es una actriz muy versátil, pero este detalle no perturbó de ninguna manera el desarrollo de la trama tan bien construida.

Otra actuación que me gustó mucho fue la de Winslow Fegley, este pequeño de once años sabe cómo desenvolverse en un ambiente terrorífico, ya de por sí lo hemos visto destacarse en otra película de terror llamada: Come Play. Me identifiqué con el personaje, especialmente por ser un cuentista, con una imaginación y creatividad muy inusual en un niño de esa edad. Al final, junto con su amiga Yazmin, exponen una moraleja sobre el respeto mutuo hacia los demás y sus diferencias.

El estilo tiene la particularidad de ser adaptado a nuestra época, el cual contiene un vestuario que parece un paseo por el tiempo. Muchos de los elementos hacen que las personas se identifiquen un poco más con los personajes. Particularmente, tuve cierta afición por la villana; es decir, no podía odiarla a pesar de lo mala que era, debió ser la cautivadora actuación de Krysten.

Conclusions

With a fantastic story full of horror, fantasy and a bit of humor, starring believable characters that can both amuse and disturb you, Nightbooks may become this year's most entertaining family horror movie. It's entertainment for the whole family with a jocular story and a nice moral at the end. We have great performances, impeccable direction and cinematography that is aesthetically both dark and striking. Although there are parts that I feel were filler, it doesn't detract from its substantial believability, especially that of its characters and the virtual creation of the set-up. I recommend watching it if you have the chance to do so in the company of your family or alone.

Con una historia fantástica llena de terror, fantasía y un poco de humor, protagonizada por personajes creíbles que pueden causarte tanto gracia como perturbación, Nightbooks puede convertirse en la película de terror familiar más entretenida de este año. Es entretenimiento para toda la familia con una historia jocosa y una linda moraleja al final. Tenemos grandes actuaciones, una dirección impecable y una fotografía que es estéticamente tanto oscura como llamativa. Aunque haya partes que siento que fueron un relleno, no le baja puntos a su sustanciosa credibilidad, especialmente a la de sus personajes y la creación virtual del montaje. Les recomiendo verla si tienen el chance de hacerlo en compañía de su familia o solos.
