The series is the warmest embrace when you need it the most, and at the same time, the coldest knife to the heart. It is a well-visualized narration of the conditions of modern relationships, human interaction in the post-digital era, and the perpetual emotional roller coaster called love.

The most important aspect is that it does not present a deliberately dysfunctional relationship for the sake of poetic license, nor does it compose a hymn to dysfunctionality. Relationships are not meant to be easy; love is not as simple as drinking water. Deep down, we carry the burden of the complexity of being. Just as the descendants of Ymir were defined by a specific fate, so too do humans bear the responsibility of the randomness that gives birth to them.

It aims to present the true nature of romantic relationships and succeeds completely. Love is not a struggle, nor something definitive, but an agreement made between two people. Relationships, in reality, are Sisyphus's rock. And if Camus's hypothesis was correct, then Sisyphus is indeed happy because of the endless effort. Emotion is not the destination, but the journey. It is not the peak of the hill, but the path to the top.

And this is exactly what Normal People presents. The relationship is judged by who ultimately made the effort, where the balance of emotion tips. If it remains steady, which is rare to impossible, then we are talking about a completely functional relationship. This is also revealed by the finale, functioning as a literary circular structure, perfectly expressed by the title of Bilbo's book: There and Back Again.

P.S. Much more can be said about the series, from mental health, the form of socialization at school, and the interaction of various school "cliques," to family bonds. Hoping not to do it an injustice or overlook them, I decided to focus on love and relationships, as they are the cornerstone of the series' narrative.

These days I was looking for a new series to watch and I saw it was available, Normal People, an Irish series directed by Lenny Abrahamson by Hettie Macdonald. The same is from 2020, the truth is that I do not know how I could not see him before, I always saw it on the internet that recommended it, but I never encouraged me, but luckily, you can see it and the day I bring you what is my personal opinion, which as always is according to lived experience and not a professional criticism.

The series consists of 12 chapters, where each one has a duration of between 20 and 30 minutes. It is the first time I see a TV series where the chapters are short, so it is considered a miniseries, but the truth is that I loved it, because everything was going to the concrete that wanted to tell and not filled with many meaningless scenes. Many may think that in this time they did not give a good development to all the personalities, but the reality is always that every detail that as a viewer should know was told. I liked the series so much that I wanted to see more and I was left wanting a second season, the ending was open and could be realized, although in the end it was not, a real shame.

This production is based on the novel written by Sally Rooney, titled with the same name as this miniseries. This story did not have a second part, since it was not continued, although the author commented on how the story continued after the end of this first installment. I must say that the ending was not as expected and the main reason is not that it was bad, on the contrary, it was something different from what we usually see in most romance stories. The drama is present in the miniseries, from beginning to end, and when we think that everything is going to a happy ending, something happens with the love story told by Normal People.

Now, what is the plot of the series? It tells the story of the beginning of the romance between Marianne and Connell, two young people who are very different, but I share something in itself, which is the security that both have and this is demonstrated in every scene we see in the miniseries. The truth is that in this series we see many things that lovers of the genre may like, such as romance, drama and quite hot scenes that will blow the imagination of all the public, so it is not suitable for all audiences. Normal People has no waste, a series that is worth it from beginning to end, it has its details in the plot, but overall it is quite good, even has a great score in the main pages that review series and movies.

One of our main characters is Marianne, a girl who is from a family that has all the comforts, she is intelligent, but has a rather difficult personality, as she is very rebellious and all because of how she is treated by her family. She is a really good girl, but she has been through a lot, she is humiliated by her mother and mainly her older brother, which is why she acts in the aforementioned way. This character is portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones, a British actress, who does it really well, the character fits her and everything she wants to convey to the viewers, goes beyond the screen and the audience can grasp it very easily. I think the character could not be anyone else's, Daisy does it very well, at least it is a personal opinion.

Then we have Connell Waldron, a boy who is quite intelligent, well liked by the whole school, he is even considered a popular young man, but the reality is that he is also quite insecure. The latter makes the plot take an unexpected turn, because despite being deeply in love with Marianne, he doesn't accept it so easily, he doubts a lot about his feelings, so he does things he may regret in the end. Paul Mescal, Irish actor, is the one who plays the role of Connell, he plays it very well, although I don't think he is at the same level of Daisy Edgar-Jones. What I can say is that you can see the onscreen chemistry of both of them, so the miniseries stands out a lot in the sex scenes we see throughout the 12 chapters.

The cast selection was just right, we get to see many more characters, who play an important role in the development of the story and what happens to our main characters in the end. On the other hand, we have what is excellent photography by Suzie Lavelle and Kate McCullough, with wonderful scenery where this love story takes place, which is the city of Sligo and then at Trinity College, located in Dublin. On the other hand, we have what is the soundtrack which is another aspect that we can highlight of the miniseries Normal People, really emotional music and full of many feelings, which will immerse us in the story of this production, full of beautiful moments, but also sad ones that at times can bring tears to our eyes.

Normal People is a miniseries worth watching. It has a very touching story, yes it is a romance, but the drama is the most that is present, it is a production that is quite similar to After, although it has a better told story than that movie, what I find most similar is the toxic relationship of the characters, but we know that this can happen in a love story. The ending is another of the points in favor of the miniseries, since it teaches us that people are not always destined to be together, no matter how much they love or care for each other. I did not expect the ending, but it is a positive point of the series, since we can be surprised.

The miniseries does not have a second season, I feel that this story could have been used for a second season, but never came out a second free of this story, although the author told what became of Marianne and Connell after what we saw in the series. A plot, cinematography, cast, direction and soundtrack that makes this the best series I have seen of the love and romance genre. If I had to give it a score, it would be 9.5, it has its details but in general everything is very well done and adapted to the novel Normal People.

Hello friends of the Movies & Tv community, today I want to share my review of a very popular series which was adapted from a book called Normal People.

Connel and Marianne are two young people who met in high school. Both have very different lives, Connel is a young man like any other from a low social stratum, only son, who stands out for getting straight A's in class and playing soccer very well in the school team. Marianne is a pretty smart girl but somewhat marginalized by her classmates, everyone has a different opinion of her just because she comes from a family with a lot of money.

Now how two young people who are so different can connect. That's what we see throughout the story, to be more specific Connel has contact with Marianne because his mom is the one in charge of cleaning Marianne's luxurious family home. At first it all starts with small conversations since Connel is somewhat shy and has all these doubts about who Marianne really is.

Little by little the encounters between the two are taking place and being teenagers seek to experiment especially in their sexuality, so both maintain a relationship not as boyfriend and girlfriend but as friends with rights. It should be noted that Connel is quite immature and I think he partly likes the fact that he can be with the girl that everyone despises and that nobody really knows, but as the chapters go by we feel sorry for Connel and at the same time for Marianne too.

After spending some time together in secret, the time comes to define what they are going to do after school, what would be the university and the career they want to choose. Connel, guided by Marianne, chooses Literature as he is very good at writing according to her. The moment we were all waiting for was for Connel to take Marianne as his date to the prom but he doesn't and goes with one of the more popular girls which makes Marianne feel very miserable and she decides not to go to the prom or have any more contact with her classmates.

Connel feels very overwhelmed when he arrives at college, everything is new to him, a new city, a new place to live and a career that he's not really sure if it's the right one. Still the days go by and sometimes Connel remembers when he was in high school and how different everything was back then. One day the friend who shares a house with Connel invites him to a party to meet more people and there was Marianne.

Marianne is surprised to see Connel and Connel too because she is very changed, now she is more outgoing, has more friends and also has a boyfriend. Marianne exchanges words with Connel and he laughs saying that her boyfriend is kind of annoying to which she replies that he is just very passionate about his career.

Well this story is developing and shows us the life of Connel and Marianne and their bad communication, because they are all the time looking for each other and at the same time they are away from their own feelings. I really enjoyed seeing Paul Mescal as Connel, I think he did a great role as an actor and also showed very well the theme of Connel's mental health which is affected at one point in the series by an event. Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne is simply phenomenal, giving life to a young woman who is discovering herself in the middle of a very rich family but with little love and union, making mistakes and changing her way of being because of the pressure of relationships, gives you a realistic idea of what a woman can live in her process of discovery.

This series touches in a simple way on topics such as sexuality in adolescence and adulthood, the maturity to make decisions in life, the way in which our family relationship can affect us as people, the loss of a loved one by suicide and how this can affect the people who were in your life, the fears to face life situations, love in adolescence and the way it grows despite the passing of the years, the changes in life that can mean something good as well as something bad, the perception we have of ourselves in this case Connel and the way we perceive ourselves, in this case Connel and his family, love in adolescence and the way it grows over the years, the changes in life that can mean something good as well as something bad, the perception we have of ourselves in this case Connel and Marianne, the fear of failure and finally letting go of something we felt good about.

It really was a very good and beautiful series, the romance of Connel and Marianne I will never forget haha, the scenes are wonderful, the way they talk to each other without even uttering a word, the looks, each reunion where the flame of love arose again. I wish and this series had more seasons but sadly it does not. It is only one season of 12 episodes of 30 minutes each. It was something that really touched my heart and I don't think I can ever forget something this cute. I need to see more performances from Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones together or apart they are both great actors.

About the book, some time ago I started to read it but I got curious and I started to watch the series and I didn't finish reading it, but what I read was pretty much in line with what I saw in the series and that's something I really liked that they didn't change things that are in the book so it was a good adaptation, the writer of the book is Sally Rooney famous for her book Normal People but she also has another one called Conversations with friends which also has a movie adaptation and I am interested in seeing it.

I hope you can enjoy this series as much as I did, I would like to know what you thought of this series if you already watched it, what did you like the most, for me it was the way Sally Rooney showed the romance in the book and in the movie. Thanks for making it this far and always supporting me 🧡

  4. Normal People | Romance is dead and done@jauregui981217d

If I have anything to thank my intense depression for, it's that it's increasingly developing my habit of self-sabotage, and while it's not quite self-sabotage, it's the closest word I have in my vocabulary to describe what I do. I had too long wanted to watch Normal People, and I finally did, I would have watched it over a single day, but since my depression only makes me sleep, though I don't get any significant breaks, I had to watch it over two days and thus appreciate one of the best dramatic miniseries ever made, though I cried less than I expected to, the emptiness in me grew more and more, making my depression more and more horrible, with the only visual break being how beautiful the photography of the series is. Overall the series is excellent, but it's not for everyone, it can be slower than you expect, quieter than you expect, more despairing than you think, and that frustrates, making it possible to stop watching in a huff.

Normal People follows Connell, played by the wonderful Paul Mescal, and Marianne, played by the incredible Daisy Edgar-Jones. Both of them I met for the first time in this series and I can't be more grateful for it in this lifetime. They are both in their senior year of high school about to graduate, Connell is a great super smart athlete with an active social life and Marianne is a know-it-all who is disliked by her classmates and is the victim of incessant bullying from them, Connell's mother works at Marianne's house, so from those little visits when Connell goes to pick up his mom, years later they meet again at the university and what was already complicated becomes worse, reaching a level of complexity that although we might believe that few relationships come to have, it is something more common than we think, because it happens to normal people every day in the world.

    image.png

I'm barely two paragraphs in and my fingers are already hurting, fucking depression for not letting me write for so long, plus I didn't fully enjoy all the movies and series I watched. As almost always, I haven't read the book on which this miniseries was based, but as it surely is, I imagine it's much better and more intense than the miniseries is, because this miniseries is so well written, so well acted, so real that it hurts, and it hurts so much that it can make you emotionally numb, at least I already had my feelings numb before watching it, only that everything got worse after watching it, gradually, almost without realizing it. So don't watch the series if you're in a really bad place, don't do what I did, don't self-sabotage, please.

One of my favorite things about this miniseries is that it shows so many facets of relationships that it can become unbelievable. More than once we will come into conflict with Connell and Marianne, many times we will believe that it is better for them to be apart than together, and it will be that way several times, but out of nowhere they get back together and show us once again that the relationship they have is one of the best things for the two of them, at least in those moments of their lives, and that if they were not together everything could be worse for them individually, and no, we don't want that to be so, so we are glad once again that they are together, although there is the possibility that they will separate again when we least expect it.

    image.png

    image.png

The scene that made me fall in love with the series even before watching it was one where Connell says he is very tired and wants to sleep, but he doesn't want to be alone, or something like that was, then Marianne, who is talking to him through Skype I think, tells him to go to sleep and leave the laptop in front of him, that she will be with him during all that time, and so it was, when Connell woke up there was Marianne I think reading or writing, and just smiled at him when she noticed that he had woken up. That scene made me want to watch the miniseries with too much desire and it was the only scene that came to my mind although later I saw other scenes, and that's the way I like to watch the series, thinking about a scene that perfectly shows the essence of the miniseries, because it is palpable the affection they have for each other no matter what and let's say that is the beautiful message that the series gives and with which I stay.

Romantic comedies should learn from dramas and stop existing, because they are the most useless things that exist, but since I'm not here to talk bad about romantic comedies, I'll keep talking good about Normal People. One thing that should be clear when watching the series is that it's about normal people, redundant considering the title, but it's like that, they are complex people who have the qualities to do good things and bad things, who can learn from their mistakes, who try to live without hurting others, but that's almost impossible, so one way or another we hurt people and the only thing left to do is to learn from what happened, apologize, and go on with our lives in the best way possible.

    image.png

    image.png

The only thing I didn't like about Normal People is that it ended, even though it has 12 chapters, which is already relatively long for miniseries, it was short, very short, and I wanted more of that relationship at times strange, at times beautiful, at times toxic. I think I should read the book. Something random about watching Normal People is that it is the first production in general that I have seen without Spanish subtitles, I watched it entirely in English and it felt good, yes there were times when I had to look up the meaning of several words, but it was very little, I think five times only, and that makes me very happy.

Normal People is very silent, you have to read more the scenes and the meaning of the actions and what we see, rather than understand what they say. I loved it too much, I want to watch it again, I think I will to cry everything I haven't cried in several weeks. Give it a chance, maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't, but it's worth a try.

    image.png

  5. Anteprima - Normal People@serialfiller1478d

    https://www.serialfiller.org/post/

Normal People non conosce mezze misure. A dip into 2020 is what I want to indulge in today in the short review you are going to read. It is Normal People and it is one of those very risky series to recommend. It would be very likely, in fact, that the "recommended" person might feel overwhelmed by emotion as much as by boredom. Normal People knows no half measures. You either love it, or you hate it. Odds are, if you are a reader of In the Mind of a SerialFiller and not of other blogs of easy clicks and inordinate likeability, then perhaps there is hope that Normal People might appeal to you and still, even more give you that emotional intensity that is always hard to find. The broadcaster betting on this little gem is Hulu, which in 2020 experienced, arguably, its year of grace. Adapted from the novel of the same name, Normal People is an indefinable series. Coming-of-age novel but also intimate insight into the psyche and soul of 2 teenagers. Story of sex but also of love, story of betrayal and selfishness, story of individualism but also of "togetherness." It is a very difficult story to metabolize and frame. This, at times, can be a boomerang, at others, as in this case, an elevator to success and divine serial grace. The series also records the semi-debut of 2 actors who are destined to occupy a dignified place in the future of TV and film. They are Paul Mescal and Sally Rooney, absolutely perfect as Connel and Marianne. Shy and bullied the former, "bitchy" and algid the latter. The 2 will find each other in an unexpected and amazing way. A love will be born. A story will be born. Beautiful, long, hard and chock-full of obstacles and painful decisions. Net of all that will be born between them will be a very deep and unbreakable bond that will keep them by each other's side always, even when distances and questionable choices will place them sidereally far from their loved one. Normal People was one of the first series this blog reviewed. The review, the original one, can be found here. I recommend, of course, that you read it to learn more about the Hulu show. 6. Normal People - La mia recensione - Part 3@serialfiller1799d

    Life isn't a train. It's a shit tornado full of gold..png

    GER

    ENG

But Normal People is also a sui generis show, which opens a very carnal window on the cross-section of the protagonists' lives.

The nudity and sex scenes, even very hard, abound.

Despite this, we find it hard to interpret them in a negative light, to dismiss them as gratuitous scenes.

    They are not.

On the contrary, they are functional to outline the increasingly deep knowledge of the self.

Through their bodies, Connell and, above all, Marianne, offer themselves to the world and from the world they receive signals and lessons that will allow them to become what they will become.

If for Connell, sex will be above all a way to explore pleasure, to connect with his partner, the same will not be true for Marianne. Much more fragile and much more dependent on Connell than she might imagine, she will end up becoming a more intimate, desperate, melancholic version of the protagonist of 50 Shades of Grey.

It will be a way, as much as any other, to hit rock bottom and from there reframe the most formative years of her life, dense with encounters, events, and personal successes.

Normal People reconfigures the meaning of Love, drama, whether adolescent or universal, escaping from any categorization and giving us a series that in 10 short episodes has been able to build a television phenomenon appreciated worldwide.

The delicate tone that underlies the entire series, the gentle search and escape of the protagonists, the tenuous portrait that each of them paints of himself, makes the series an event not to be missed.

For its ability to tell what is inside each of us, escaping words and actions, it reminds us of the always too much forgotten "Rectify", a series of a few years ago that with many silences and few words managed to draw with vigorous strength the anxieties, fears, the will of its wounded and unfortunate protagonist.

Normal People also makes this characteristic its own, managing to make Connell and Marianne's interactions speak more than the words themselves could convey.

    image.png

A missed kiss, a hand that brushes against another, a distant thought, a caress that touches a tear.

Normal People works by subtraction continuously, leaving to its splendid interpreters the weight of the message, of the elusive and inner story of both.

The result is excellent, the result is a series that slowly slips away, without apparent jolts, if not that which awakens within each of us silently at the end of the vision, a clear sign of having managed to penetrate widely into the depths of each of us. https://www.serialfiller.org/post/normal-people-un-titolo-che-inganna-per-una-serie-che-sorprende Plot: 6 Character Development: 9,5 Complexity: 8 Originality: 7 Depth: 10 Cast: 8 Impact on contemporary seriality: 7 Drama Component: 9 Comedy Component: 2 Technical aspect: 6 Direction: 7 Entertainment: 6 Emotional involvement: 10 Soundtrack: 6

  7. Normal People - La mia recensione - Part 2@serialfiller1978d

  8. Normal People - La mia recensione - Part 1@serialfiller1983d

  9. A Normal People (2020) review - People are crazy about this series, but why?@unbiasedwriter2208d

Have you heard about the TV series Normal People? It hasn't been on Netflix, and it hasn't aired on popular TV networks like CBS and NBC in the United States. Instead, it was produced by BBC and it aired on BBC in the UK and RTE in Ireland in April 2020, and it was also released on Hulu in the United States in April. It has received fantastic critics, and just a few days ago, I saw someone give it 6/6 as rating. What is Normal People all about? Is it worth watching?

    connell1.jpg

    What is Normal People about?

Normal People is a series with a total of 12 episodes. Throughout the episodes, we meet Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal) as two teenagers who turn into adults in front of our eyes. Marianne is a very popular student at first, while Connell is a popular boy. For this reason, Connell doesn't dare to tell anyone about his relationship to Marianne. This is just the start of a long and messy relationship that will take them through their studies at Trinity College in Dublin.

That is the very short story of Normal People. It might sound flat, and this is not the kind of show that I normally enjoy, but I have watched all episodes, and I have actually had quite a good time doing so... Except for the fact that the series really annoys me.

    marianne.jpg

    What are normal people like?

The annoying part is that this is about normal people. It could have been you and me. Of course, it couldn't have been me, because I am not like Connell in the series. I am much more determined and if I want something, I take it. Also, I don't care so much about what people think... So, to me, it was a major challenge to keep my blood pressure low as I watched Connell being so extremely lame (in my eyes) and choosing wrong and being stupid so many times.

But, I do believe many people who watch Normal People will be able to associate with what Connell is going through, and also to see and understand what Marianne is going through. Maybe this series will feel like an eye-opener to some?

Have you noticed that normal people are annoying, especially if you spend time with them. So, what can you expect when you decide to spend between 5 and 6 hours to watch all the twelve episodes of Normal People? It is going to be annoying. You let two persons into your life, and they will for sure impact you in one way or another.

Normal People had more than 16 million viewer requests on BBC iPlayer in the first week after it's release. This is way higher than any other earlier program in history. It currently has a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Should I watch Normal People or not?

I am a big fan of crazy humor, high adrenaline action movies, and detailed detective movies. This didn't fall into any of those categories (not even close). This is a slow drama with beautiful Irish accent. But, even though this isn't the kind of series I would really watch, I actually had a good time watching it... besides all the occasions in which I wanted to throw a chair at either Marianne or at Connell, simply because they made terrible choices (that I of course would never have done).

As a result, I would give Normal People a chance. However, I do understand that some macho men will call this terrible, boring, and so on... and I have no problem understanding that either. In fact, you don't need to be very macho for this to be boring. But, the younger audience will probably relate better to the characters, and that is why it has turned so popular among people in the age group between 18 and 35 years in the UK.

    My Normal People score

    7.5/10

It made me furious about what was going on way too often, but still, it had a strange magic to it, and it always made me cheer for the characters in the series to make the right choices.

Want to know more about Normal People before you give it a try? Check the trailer right here.

    Where to watch Normal People?

You can currently stream Normal People online on NRK in Norway, on BBC iPlayer, and on Hulu in the United States. For more information on how to watch Normal People online, check this article.

    Have you seen Normal People?

Have you seen the show yourself? I would love to hear your honest opinion on the show. Did you get angry when you saw it? Did you recognize yourself in the struggles of Marianne and Connell? Write down your thoughts and let me know about them.

  10. Normal People: First Look@serialfiller2237d

    image.png

    Tunnel Wave.png

In the past few days, a highly anticipated series like "The Eddy" by Damien Chazelle has come out. The vision of the pilot was a half disappointment but there is time for a redemption. It happens, however, that unexpected or even unknown series catch your attention when you least expect it. This is the case with the British series

    NORMAL PEOPLE

12 episodes of about half an hour that would make no sense to see if not for the delicacy of the characters, the touch used in telling a seemingly trivial, normal story. And this is exactly what attracts a lot of this series, the ability to tell a very simple story, a (love) story between two teenagers. Watching the first episodes you will realize that you do not want to continue watching. Why were there incredibly original ideas? Actoral performances never seen before? Blockbuster special effects? None of that. There's that alchemy, that wonderful patina of innocence that envelops every moment lived together with Connel and Marianne. 2 solid but very fragile souls who find themselves irremediably and unexpectedly. Marianne is a very fragile soul but who hides in public behind a "bitchy bitch" air as a pungent girl with burning and sometimes arrogant comments compared to her peers. Connel is a sporty boy, much loved by friends and schoolmates and also by girls but who is basically very shy and very uncomfortable with people of his age. They are 2 very, very mature people who manage, in silence and dialogue, to be perfect for each other. Theirs is a genuine love, a beautiful friendship but it is a relationship to hide to avoid that others, companions, friends, peers can marginalize each other and change their attitude towards others. Some might call it teen drama but teen drama is not. It's something more, much more. To be seen.

    NORMAL PEOPLE
