The story unfolds in a circular and episodic manner. The novel’s timeline is frozen in the memories of a stormy night, a bad night that “stirs the swamp lying dormant beneath the crust of the last 25 years.”
Through the evocative voice of Natividad, our main narrator, the action pauses in the first chapter to unfold the past sequentially and resumes masterfully the following morning. As E.M. Forster so aptly put it, the great merit of a story is to make the audience want to know what happens next, and I assure you that the mystery surrounding the library, the trunk, and the family secrets will captivate you from beginning to end.
Spiritual Doubts and Their People.
The most powerful core of the work lies in what Natividad himself calls his “spiritual doubts.” I am deeply moved by his identity crisis as he finds himself caught between two realities: “To which of the two worlds did I belong? To the one with the cheerful sun that gilds the mangoes and darkens the coconut’s flesh, causing the oil to seep out, or to the one with the white twilight that glides over the shiny, cold floors?” This dilemma is interwoven with fictional yet deeply real characters. From old Cervelión—a long, flute-like black man who connects the protagonist to his ancestral roots—to the silent Eduvige, the enigmatic Grandmother Anita with her prophetic trunk, and the taciturn white governess Frau Berza, who kept a secret while striking the piano keys at the White House.
A Canvas of Rhythm, Magic, and Poetry
What ultimately earns this work my highest rating is the lyrical power of its atmosphere. Díaz Sánchez writes with the mastery of a landscape painter: the wild rumble of drums, the nights of blue donkeys, the smell of firewood, and the singing of Black people hard at work blend with fantastical rituals and pure mysticism. It is an impeccable handling of light and darkness.
My verdict:
Cumboto’s greatest strength is the intelligent simplicity with which it is written. The author manages to transport us into a state of paradisiacal reverie without ever falling into cloying stories. It is poetic, it is intelligent, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to you!

La Estructura: Un Rompecabezas Perfecto
Para mí, esta novela no es una simple narración lineal; es un fascinante rompecabezas de recuerdos aglomerados que retumba solo, esperando esa pieza exacta que viene desde lejos para dar el ensamble perfecto. La historia se nos presenta de forma circular y episódica. El tiempo de la novela está detenido en los recuerdos de una noche tormentosa, una mala noche que «remueve el pantano dormido bajo la costra de los últimos 25 años».
A través de la voz evocadora de Natividad, nuestro narrador principal, la acción se frena en el primer capítulo para desplegar el pasado secuencialmente y se retoma con maestría a la mañana siguiente. Como bien exponía E.M. Forster, el gran mérito de una historia es conseguir que el público quiera saber qué ocurre después, y les aseguro que el misterio envuelto en la biblioteca, el baúl y los secretos familiares los atrapará de principio a fin.
Las Dudas Espirituales y su Gente
El núcleo más potente de la obra radica en lo que el propio Natividad llama sus "dudas espirituales". Me conmueve profundamente su conflicto de identidad al verse atrapado entre dos realidades: «¿A cuál de los dos mundos pertenecía yo? ¿Al del alegre sol que dora los mangos y ennegrece la pulpa del coco haciéndole brotar el aceite, o al de la blanca penumbra que resbala sobre los pisos brillantes y fríos?». Este dilema se entrelaza con personajes ficticios pero profundamente reales. Desde el viejo Cervelión —un negro largo y flauto que conecta al protagonista con sus raíces ancestrales— hasta la silenciosa Eduvige, la enigmática abuela Anita con su baúl profético, y la taciturna institutriz blanca Frau Berza, quien guardaba un secreto mientras golpeaba las teclas del piano en la Casa Blanca.
Un Cuadro de Ritmo, Magia y Poesía
Lo que termina por consagrar mi nota máxima para esta obra es la fuerza lírica de su atmósfera. Díaz Sánchez escribe con la maestría de un paisajista: el retumbar salvaje de los tambores, las noches de burros azules, el olor a leña y el canto de los negros en plena faena se conjugan con ritos fantásticos y misticismo puro. Es un manejo impecable de la luz y la oscuridad.
Mi veredicto:
El mayor valor de Cumboto es la sencillez inteligente con la que está escrita. El autor logra meternos en un estado de ensoñación paradisiaca sin caer jamás en historias empalagosas. ¡Es poética, es inteligente y se las recomiendo con el corazón!
