   Hello anime friends, as you already know, I've been watching all the Ghibli Studios movies, finding some real gems in the process, although sometimes I've also come across some that in my humble opinion are overrated. Today it was the turn of “I Can Hear the Sea” or “Ocean Waves” as it is known in English. As I understand it is the only film of the studio that was made directly in a television format and therefore does not stand out for its graphic quality, although honestly I noticed a very good quality in this regard.

   Hola amigos de anime, como ya ustedes saben, he estado viendo todas las películas de estudios Ghibli, encontrando verdaderas gemas en el proceso, aunque a veces también me he encontrado con algunas que en mi humilde opinión están sobre valoradas. Hoy fue el turno de "Puedo Escuchar el Mar" u "Ocean Waves", como se le conoce en inglés. Según tengo entendido es la única película del estudio que se hizo directamente en un formato para televisión y por lo tanto no destaca por su calidad gráfica, aunque honestamente yo noté una muy buena calidad en este sentido.

   Overview/Resumen

   Taku Morisaki is a boy who gets along very well with his friends, he does not stand out for his great academic skills but for being loyal to his friends and for being a leader, suddenly Rikako Muto arrives at school, a girl from Tokyo who revolutionizes everything around her, among the boys for her beauty, and among the girls because she arouses envy, however she is actually very arrogant and to some extent conceited and selfish. Little by little the protagonist of this story gets involved with her to the point of getting into some trouble because of her bad habit of lying, or at least of not being clear enough. Time goes by, and at the end of school everyone follows the course of their own destiny, and at an alumni party where they all meet again, old feelings begin to bloom.

   Taku Morisaki es un chico que se lleva muy bien con sus amigos, no destaca por sus grandes destrezas académicas pero sí por ser leal con los amigos y por tener madera de líder, de pronto llega al colegio Rikako Muto, una chica de Tokio que revoluciona todo a su alrededor, entre los chicos por su belleza, y entre las chicas porque despierta envidia, no obstante ella en realidad es muy arrogante y hasta cierto punto engreída y egoísta. Poco a poco el protagonista de esta historia se va involucrando con ella hasta el punto de verse metido en algunos aprietos por la mala costumbre de ella de mentir, o al menos de no ser lo suficientemente clara. El tiempo pasa, y al terminar la escuela cada quien sigue el rumbo de su propio destino, y en una fiesta de ex alumnos donde todos se reencuentran empiezan a florar viejos sentimientos.

   My Opinion/Mi Opinión

   I'm not going to lie, this movie is one of my least favorite Ghibli movies, it has an extremely slow pace, extremely slow for my taste, seriously, I don't mean it was bad, not at all, it's just a matter of taste, it was very slow and I feel that the story lacked more action or spice, more dynamism for me to feel more connected with it, However I repeat, I don't want to say that it was a bad film, just that the narrative of the story does not go with what I like to see, in general, even so, like all the films of this studio, this one plays a very important role in terms of transmitting positive messages that help to strengthen the values of society. I think in this case it appeals to nostalgia for what we once were, for our adolescence, the old friendships, the hobbies we had and the talks we had during every recess between classes.

   No les voy a mentir, esta película es de mis menos favoritas de Ghibli, tiene un ritmo extremadamente lento, supremamente lento para mi gusto, en serio, no quiero decir que haya estado mal, en lo absoluto, es solo cuestión de gustos, fue muy lenta y siento que a la historia le faltó más acción o sazón, más dinamismo para yo sentirme más conectada con ella, no obstante repito, no quiero decir que fue un mal film, simplemente que la narrativa de la historia no va con lo que me gusta ver, por lo general, aún así, al igual que todas las películas de este estudio, esta juega un papel importantísimo en lo que respecta a la transmisión de mensajes positivos que ayudan a fortalecer los valores de la sociedad. Creo que en este caso apela a la nostalgia por lo que fuimos alguna vez, por nuestra adolescencia, las viejas amistades, los hobbies que teníamos y las pláticas en cada receso entre clases.

   Maybe the fact that I did not feel any connection with the film is because I do not feel identified with the problems faced by the characters, but they are typical problems of adolescence, a stage in which we tend to magnify everything, where we feel misunderstood and alone, so we make a drama out of everything, However, as it happens in the film, when adulthood comes, when we begin to take care of ourselves, when we have less free time to share with friends and family is when we realize that in reality we were much freer than now, it is then when nostalgia and melancholy attack.

   Quizá el hecho de que yo no haya sentido alguna conexión con el film se deba a que no me siento identificada con los problemas a los que se enfrentan los personajes, pero es que son problemas típicos de la adolescencia, una etapa en la cual solemos magnificar todo, donde nos sentimos incomprendidos y solos, por eso hacemos de todo un drama, sin embargo, tal como sucede en la película, cuando llega la vida adulta, cuando comenzamos a hacernos cargo de nosotros mismos, cuando tenemos menos tiempo libre para compartir con amigos y familiares es cuando nos damos cuenta que en realidad éramos mucho más libres que ahora, es entonces cuando atacan la nostalgia y la melancolía.

   But we should be grateful for that past that led us to be what we are today, because it is precisely that accumulation of experiences that gives us the wisdom and experience that will accompany us throughout our lives.

   Pero debemos estar agradecidos de ese pasado que nos llevó a ser lo que somos hoy en día, porque es precisamente ese cúmulo de vivencias lo que nos da la sabiduría y experiencia que nos acompañará toda la vida.

   As I always say, you must see the film to draw your own conclusions, do not get carried away by what I said about the film being too slow for me, because maybe for you it is not like that at all, it is a matter of taste and perception.

   Como siempre digo, ustedes deben ver el film para sacar sus propias conclusiones, no se dejen llevar por lo que les dije respecto a que para mi la película tuvo un ritmo demasiado lento, porque tal vez para ustedes no sea así en lo absoluto, es una cuestión de gustos y percepción.

   I'm not usually a person who likes to watch animated movies, however this weekend we had visitors at home and one of the activities my relatives did was to sit and watch movies on Netflix, while we sat down to eat the barbecue of course I also paid attention, and that's how I got hooked on this movie whose review I would like to share with you.

   Por lo general no soy una persona a la que le guste ver películas animadas, sin embargo el finde semana tuvimos visitas en la casa y una de las actividades que hicieron mis familiares fue sentarse a ver películas en netflix, mientras nos sentábamos a comer la barbacoa desde luego yo también presté atención, y fue así como quedé enganchado a esta película cuya reseña me gustaría compartir con ustedes.

   The story begins in a slow and somewhat basic way, it is about a couple of teenagers who were inseparable friends, the best friends of all high school, but this changes when a girl arrives from the capital (Tokyo) both friends are distanced because they have feelings for her, to make matters worse one of them begins to approach the girl in question but gradually begins to have problems due to the lack of sincerity of her.

   La historia inicia de una forma lenta y un tanto básica, se trata de un par de adolescentes que eran amigos inseparables, los mejores amigos de todas la secundaria, pero esto cambia cuando llega una chica desde la capital (Tokio) ambos amigos se distancian porque tienen sentimientos hacia ella, para colmo uno de ellos comienza a acercarse a la muchacha en cuestión pero poco a poco empieza a tener problemas debido a la falta de sinceridad de ella.

   However, I think that what the film intends to show us is the way we all see life when we are teenagers, in fact I must confess that I felt nostalgic for my youth, also in a very different time from today, when we saw girls in another way, analyzing them from any point of view, we were attracted to them but at the same time we hated not being able to understand them. Teenagers are more passionate and less reflective, they live emotions with an amazing intensity and can make a drama out of any situation, so I think this movie wanted to show us that side, to make us adults remember how we felt then, and in the case of the younger ones to make them feel that they are understood.

   Sin embargo pienso que lo que la película pretende mostrarnos es, la forma en que todos vemos la vida cuando somos adolescentes, de hecho he de confesarles que sentí nostalgia por mis años de juventud, además en una época muy diferente a la actual, cuando veíamos a las muchachas de otra forma, analizándolas desde cualquier punto de vista , nos atraían pero al mismo tiempo odiábamos no poder comprenderlas. Los adolescentes son más pasionales y menos reflexivos, ellos viven las emociones con una intensidad asombrosa y pueden hacer un drama de cualquier situación, así que pienso que esta película quiso mostrarnos ese lado, hacernos recordar a los adultos como nos sentíamos entonces, y en el caso de los más jóvenes hacerlos sentir que son comprendidos.

   The pace of the movie is slow, but maybe that's why I ended up liking it, because it is out of the conventional animated movies (at least the ones I'm used to) where things happen all the time, not this one, when you see this movie you feel like you are watching a normal one, in live action, because the characters are more realistic, more human in every sense, I am not only referring to the animation, but to the story as such, it transmits nostalgia and for those who are still very young it helps them to understand that with the years the waters calm down and you learn to see life in a different way, that friends are very valuable and the time spent together is also very valuable. We can see this in the scene where all the characters gather at an alumni party.

   El ritmo de la película es lento, pero será por eso quizá que me terminó gustando, porque se sale de lo convencional en materia del cine animado (al menos del que estoy acostumbrado) donde pasan cosas a cada rato, este no, al ver esta película sientes que estás viendo una normal, en live action, porque los personajes son más realistas, más humanos en todos los sentidos, no me refiero solo a la animación, sino a la historia como tal, nos transmite nostalgia y a los que aún son muy jóvenes les ayuda a comprender que con los años las aguas se calman y aprendes a ver la vida de manera distinta, que los amigos son muy valiosos y el tiempo que pasan juntos también lo es. Esto lo podemos comprobar en la escena donde todos los personajes se reúnen en una fiesta de exalumnos.

   Ghibli films are pretty much well-known especially for their other-worldly stories and animation. However, there are several Ghibli films that doesn't really involve even a bit of fantasy in their stories. They do have some films that are more realistic and pretty much relatable and one of them is *Umi ga Kikoeru* or ***The Ocean Waves*** in English.

   If we take the title ***"海がきこえる"*** literally, it'll translate to ***I can hear the sea.*** It makes sense because the setting of the story took place in one of the places in Shikoku island named Kochi. Their place is in a small town by the sea. Now, what is the story about?

   The story revolves around the three main characters namely Taku, Yutaka and Rikako. Taku and Yutaka are very good friends who somehow share the same values and principles which made them closer to each other. There was one event in their middle school which made them best friends despite being in different classes.
   In high school, Rikako, who is originally from Tokyo, transferred to their school. Yutaka who was their class representative took her around the school and later on introduced her to his best friend Taku. A lot of things and drama happened when Rikako came to the picture.

   Taku is such a good-hearted character. He is the kind of person one can really rely on. He's willing to help someone who is in need. He is the type of friend who will leave what he's doing just to meet someone who needs him. I like his character. He's also really good looking. *lol*

   Yutaka is the responsible type of person. He is often their class representative. What's good about him is his honesty. He speaks his mind and doesn't sugarcoat. He sticks to his belief and principles. He really has a strong personality which is very common to see in real life.

   Rikako is a self-centered brat. It could be understandable due to her life circumstances but I don't like her attitude. Some people may like her, but I'm not one of them. Maybe because I don't like selfish people the most, but her character is really everywhere in reality. *haha*
   She's beautiful, talented and smart, so it's expected that guys become attracted to her. She has this strong front but is also very vulnerable which guys would want to protect. *lol*

   Despite not really liking the female lead, the story was really good. It portrays a teenager's way to adulthood. It reflects possible life circumstances where one may if not already experienced.
   I think it's nice to watch such stories once in a while. It's relatable, so people can ponder about various things. Despite the seriousness, there were also some funny and interesting scenes which can be refreshing as well.
   The story isn't very heavy, just enough to make you think. *haha*
   The art style and animation is also pretty good. Typical 90s style which I find beautiful. I think 90s style animation is classic. <3
