A Superior example of how flavorful dialogue, talented actors can excellent staging can make something familiar really pop. — Noel Murray, Los Angeles Times

Flawless, stunning, and thoroughly enthralling— the Old Man seems to be a suspenseful representation of a traumatic life burdened with guilt and unending love. Apart from that, you cannot overlook the art of storytelling. Overall, it’s perfect for suspense-thriller lovers who also dislike violence but yearn for a slow-paced movie with tension at every bend.

Once again, the old men triumphs!

Yes, literally. It’s not particularly about this movie but all movies released in 2021/2022 featuring elderly artists as well. And I have repeatedly highlighted how I am loving the performance of these experienced actors who are making a difference. Sometimes they are action-packed and sometimes a slow-paced suspenseful dramas— regardless of genre, the acting is surpassing all my expectations.

Anyway, what is it that I liked the Old Man for? Let’s find out.

As I have already mentioned, the movie is stuffed with raw suspense and a bit of mystery here and there. For me, I didn’t understand the ending yet— is it that the old man is self-banished in the woods after killing his wife and her secret lover or there is something else?

At the same time, the sources of eternal life they were talking about— is that real or just a made-up story? If so, how come both are sharing the same incident about the place? Isn’t that surprising?

Although the movie later unfolds the relationship between the young lad and the old man; which makes sense to many unsolved mysteries, the rising tension between the characters will keep you glued to the screen.

The story itself is truly mesmerising. To stage a long movie within a single room with a few characters, you have to be a true master of scriptwriting. And yes, the mastery is justified. Everything in the setting seems to have a vital purpose and collectively intensifies the suspenseful environment.

Also, the low-light indoor environment symbolises the dark past of the characters and whenever audiences are shown an outdoor clip, either it’s unfolding a mystery or lightening the mood by shedding light on the development of the story. The pain gets eased, and the acting gets better— just like the outdoor environment; indicating hope and freedom.

Appreciating the movie in a few words will echo as a failed attempt to build a dam out of straw. So, I better not even try it. But this is to assure you that, once you start watching the movie, you possibly cannot take a break. It happened to me and most probably you will have a similar experience.
