I don't know why I had the feeling that this series had much more time to have been released. No, it only has a year of being released, or I think it doesn't even have a year, anyway, thanks to that it stops surprising me how incredible it is, besides, I feel that life has cheated me with my friendships, nobody saw this series, and nobody recommended it to me, that is something that worries me because it is a perfect series in many ways. I wish I had seen it before, because then I would have seen it many times because of how incredible it is, only now it is up to me to recommend it tirelessly.

Our Flag Means Death will give us a vision of what is the life of Stede Bonet, a wealthy member of society, who hates the life he has, although it is not a bad life, he has a wife, a daughter, a son, land, and money, lots of money, but that is not what he wants, although he does not really know what he wants, but that does not prevent him from knowing that what he has does not satisfy him in any way, so in the midst of an existential crisis, he decides to abandon his family, become captain of the Revenge, the ship he had made as a gift for his wife, and become a pirate, a decision that will lead him to live things that nobody would expect, like meeting the most feared pirate of a whole generation and end up living with him in the same ship waiting to be killed or saved, whichever comes first.

Ending my birthday yesterday by watching the final episode of Our Flag Means Death made life bearable for a while longer, plus, I don't know when, but the second season of the series premieres soon, so I can't kill myself yet having so close a second season of a story that I need to see how they continue it. Because yes, it would be a cardinal sin for this series not to get a second and third season, if possible, at the same time it will be a cardinal sin if it doesn't give Good Omens a third season.

There is so much to talk about here, I don't know how to begin. The first thing would be that Taika Waititi's influence is noticeable, because even before he comes out representing Blackbeard, his influence was already noticeable, well yes, it is noticeable, I don't know how to say it, but it is noticeable, then we see him in full acting in the chapters and it was one of the most beautiful and hilarious things I had seen, he found a role that was very natural for him to do, plus he had the incredible company of Rhys Darby, who fucking did the impossible acting as Stede Bonnet, and what in a different context could be a character that everyone would hate, became one of my favorite characters of all the existing series, that is, Stede is a privileged rich white man who decided to abandon his life with his wife and children, to become a pirate, being something that is not in his nature, but surprisingly he does better than you would expect, obviously that would fall badly, but here it is not so, and that continues to surprise me.

    image.png

This is one of those shows where the forced inclusion are the cishetero people, and I love it, because it's a representation of what the world should be, well, in some things, in others not, and the best ones are the ones where people hate each other because they killed relatives and stuff like that, and not because of who they are having sex with, falling in love with, and living a happy life. Izzy is one of those characters, he hates people for how useless they can be, how lazy they are, but he doesn't care at all about a man being in a relationship with another man, I mean, ideally, although he's still a shitty person in many other ways, but that's already work that has to do with his way of thinking about interpersonal relationships, how I hated what he did, you bastard.

I love Stede and Blackbeard with all my soul, but my favorite characters are Julius and Jim. Julius is the ship's scribe, he's the only one of the crew who can read and write, plus he's openly gay, and apparently he painted everyone's genitals on the ship, although I don't know if it was just that, or if they all got to have sex with him, which wouldn't surprise me, but since they didn't make it clear, I still have the doubt, anyway, Julius will have very pointed dialogues that will feel like therapy, and it will be beautiful, when he insulted Blackbeard I loved him like never before.

Jim is my favorite character, he is what you could come to think of as a non-binary person, because yes, Jim is a person who was assigned female gender at birth, and he used the name he was given, but many things happened and made him change his name, pretend to be a man, until he gets found out, and everybody starts to treat him with the neutral pronouns, and they use the name he chooses, which is Jim, and everybody forgets his deadname, they treat him the same way as before, they don't make mistakes with his name, nor his pronouns, and everybody is happy, because if they get to bother Jim, he will kill them with his familiar knife before they realize it. This series is too queer and the world has failed to appreciate it.

    image.png

I need them to give this old couple a happy ending, or at least a realistic ending not so painful, because if they don't let Stede and Ed end up together, I'm going to kill myself, although it won't be for that, but I'm still going to kill myself. There you have the trailer, enjoy it, and go watch the series, it's totally worth the world.

    image.png

  2. 'Our Flag Means Death' by David Jenkins Review: Pirates not taken seriously for once@namiks1462d

    vlcsnap-2022-06-27-20h06m33s825.png

The genre of pirates is one that never really has managed to take off in the film industry for some odd reason, it seems the full extent in recent years pertains mostly to a single franchise and maybe the odd series that comes and goes without really ever gaining much traction -- and yes, I am referring to both Pirates of the Caribbean and Black Sails. These two creations sitting at the forefront of an otherwise very shallow genre that does not actually have much reason for being so shallow. While its brother genre, of which is medieval, certainly does get more entries despite also not being all that popular after the downfall of Game of Thrones, I can't help but question just why this pirate genre can't seem to really go anywhere.

What is more surprising is that such a deep genre capable of so many things is only ever really taken completely seriously, or with some humour in it. Very rarely is the concept of piracy taken into consideration with a comedic mindset; dissecting the many complex strategies and fearful individuals that can be found in the sea, lurking on boats of incredible engineering and design. Thankfully, we finally do have something that really does not wish to take itself all that seriously. A show that mixes the luxuries of piracy alongside the dim, displaying the many unique types of characters that very well could've been pirates, though not particularly living up to the name.

Though, part of me is sad knowing that this show has barely managed to get up on its feet, bound to HBO Max, an already relatively niche streaming service, and thus kept below the deck despite its creativity and willing to try something different, especially in an era where creativity is sparsely funded and supported.

    Our Flag Means Death

    vlcsnap-2022-06-27-20h06m19s300.png

Our Flag Means Death is a low budget series, but one that is done rather well. It features a series of faces both familiar and new to many of us, while each character manages to actually stand out, providing use to the episodes and stories told. That is to say that our wide range of pirates are actually rather diverse in character; this allows for some fun episodes where their traits come out more and feature a more meaningful contribution to the story at hand.

And this is what makes Our Flag Means Death stand out, though already quite easily in a genre that is mostly dead: it does not take itself seriously. Our group of pirates are led by an individual that knows nothing of piracy and evil, completely incapable of harming anyone and often a well-spoken man of his word. A more intellectual being that you would expect to find working in theatre or in a gallery -- gentle, kind, fragile, and caring. Quite literally the polar opposite of the stereotypical pirate captain, capable of managing a crew of bloodthirsty outcasts with nowhere left to go and no other skills other than theft and murder.

Our Flag Means Death still clings to many of these tropes you would expect to be found within the pirate genre, but it does so while creating a range of characters that are quite stupid. People that manage to breeze through life under sheer luck, narrowly escaping threats and dangers without quite noticing how close things were. This is a show that heavily focuses on dialogue and writing, where the sets and backgrounds can often be obvious in their cheap aesthetic, done with a low budget and not much care for it. I think it suits it quite well, honestly. It adds to the immaturity of the show, and its general carelessness.

This is most obvious in how our pirates speak and act. Our lines are delivered in a way that is quite modern, as if these characters were born today but into a world still roamed by pirates with ships purely carried across the oceans by wind. So I would certainly say that if you expected typical pirate dialogue and line delivery, you won't really find it here. Even in their makeup and costumes, they're tidy, and well-kept. Clean.

What propels the show forward, however, is how this group of pirates act. None of them are remotely equipped to be pirates, and are led by a captain that certainly isn't destined to be one. It results in their encounters with others much more interesting and funny given they attempt to act how they should, not quite pulling it off.

    Unique and engaging

    vlcsnap-2022-06-27-20h06m28s603.png

As mentioned above: Our Flag Means Death is not a show shot with a considerably large budget. It is one that has been done almost as cheap as possible. But it is done well enough to keep you engaged and wanting to follow this crew of idiots as they attempt to get rich and gain notoriety for their actions. It doesn't always make you laugh, but it can. And it doesn't even matter that much, because it is a show that does something well, with a genre that is mostly overlooked.

I was surprised to see that it got renewed for a second season, and I hope it does get a little boost in production quality and hopefully viewership as a result. It is a neat little show with a lot of potential, and with the right people behind it, many of which coming from huge backgrounds in Hollywood already. Both in crew and in cast! I won't spoil things though, you are best watching the show, giving it a chance, and discovering the minds behind it, and in it.

That said, this is a show that I can't see getting a third season if it doesn't manage to gain a stronger backing. Its second season will most likely be its last with an intentional ending to tie things up. Similar to the way of shows like What We Do In The Shadows, and Wellington Paranormal. Coming to a sudden end on a good note, not quite tying things up in a narrative sense, but giving you a little closure having spread around a few laughs and adventures.

    ENG

As usual today I bring you a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see in the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for some months now, I have decided to give you constantly, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see on www.serialfiller.org. Parody parody today for you. Don't miss it, also because the article is complete. Enjoy reading

    Fascinated by pirate stories?

Mockumentary et similia what a passion?

Do you also parody things that can be learned?

HBOMax must have thought of you when it received in its hands a script whose first page read "Our Flag Means Death". That first page has become a TV series and the pilot of that series has benefited from the presence, behind the camera, of an authoritative and impressive signature such as that of Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, JoJo Rabbit). The famous director will also be present in the role of actor, playing the legendary Blackbeard. Blackbeard? Pirates? Mockumentary? But what exactly is this Our Flag Means Death? It's a series that...I'll tell you about with these first impressions of the new HBOMax series.

Damn you HBO, in all your forms, you are capable of creating, time and time again, shows that I have a hard time leaving. Do you understand that we all have private lives here and we can't follow everything, everything, everything? Sometimes it's nice to sacrifice something, to abandon after an episode, to throw yourself headlong into other things. But no, dear HBO, when you do things you do them right, always, even when they are not perfect, even when something does not work, even when that subject matters little. And so, even with Our Flag Means Death you put us in front of a complicated crossroads. You've created a classic pirate story, aping the Jack Sparrows of this world, and entrusting the leadership of a pirate ship to a well-dressed, shy, well-mannered, educated, cultured, and not exactly manly commander. The new show from the streaming platform of the glorious HBO, is a parody on the pirate genre and is also a half mockumentary. Take The Pirates of the Caribbean and turn it on its head in a comedic, macchiatellian key. The pirates are treated very well by their captain. The ship is equipped with a library, scented toilets and all the pirates on board have a minimum wage that allows them to live with dignity even when there are no raids to inflate their pockets. The captain is a kind and visionary man, back from a life of wealth and privilege but full of abuse and bullying. Stede Bonnet is the star of this show, hilarious in concept, much less rowdy in execution. As is often the case with these types of shows, you can't help but appreciate the concept behind the making. The series is funny, smart, lively. How much this will be enough is unknown. I'm afraid we'll have to continue viewing, and resent in a few weeks.

Want to continue watching it: 7+ Desire to recommend it: 8 Originality: 9 Cast: 6,5 Technical Area: 7+ Where to Watch: HBOMax Release Year: 2022
