“Wait, why do I feel kind of conflicted right now?” That was me with Overlord. I didn’t go into it expecting to feel much—honestly, I thought it was going to be just another “trapped in a game” anime, you know? Cool fights, flashy powers, guilds, that whole vibe. But then Ainz Ooal Gown showed up, and suddenly I realized this wasn’t just about leveling up or conquering dungeons—it was about power, loneliness, and what happens when you lose sight of who you used to be.
And this is the part that I found to be quite memorable: Ainz is not a bright, upright hero. He is this bone-dry, collected overlord, cool and collected, and creating the image of an ideal, godlike headman when inside he is really a mere man who just sat down to a game and never got up. I was struck more than I anticipated by that duality. Since is not that more or less like life? How do we mask-up, be it confidence, competence, even indifference, when half the time we can’t tell that we are winging out, not letting the cracks show? It was strangely human to see him ordering armies, behaving mercilessly, and playing with kingdoms, when he is aware that he is still Momonga inside.
I laughed a lot too. I was laughing at the guardians of Nazarick--and above all at Albedo, with her grotesque devotion--prostrating themselves. Her infatuation with Ainz is so much over the top as to be almost ridiculous, but somehow it brings this bizarre sense of warmth to the novel. And Shalltear... man, how she throws back and forth between grace and utter anarchy? She illuminated every scene in which she appeared. The moments provided me with a rest, an opportunity to breathe out and savor how ridiculous all of this was before the show pulled me back into its more serious subjects.
Not everything was humour and show business. I was hit in the gut by some of the scenes. Such as when you find out how cruel Ainz can be towards strangers–those scenes where he kills or plays with people. I would be sitting there and think, Wait wait, am I supposed to root for him? And yet, I couldn’t stop. That ethical grayness, the manner in which the anime makes you doubt the identity of the good guys even in the first place, always stuck with me. It made me remember how untidy the actual power is. It is not necessarily about right and wrong. At times it is a matter of survival, loyalty, or simple point making.
And I believe that it was that underlying sense of loneliness that made Overlord so memorable to me. Suppose you were in that world where everybody thinks of you as this untouchable sovereign, only deep inside you are still human enough to desire others, appreciate them, perhaps even to be vulnerable. That contrast haunted me. I wondered whenever Ainz assumed that unshakable front whether some part of him was simply seeking someone to peer behind it.
So, Overlord was a surprise to me. It was not only watching a skull lord conquer the world--it was about unraveling layers of power, identity, and lies we tell ourselves to continue living. That was laughing one moment and doubting your own value of moral grounds the next. And now, sitting here with this coffee, and telling you about it, I find--that is why it stuck in my head. Since it did not simply amuse me. It brought to my mind the concept of masks, loneliness and the burden of bearing an image so heavy that it cannot be put down.

My Review
Overlord is one of the best Isekai animes I have ever seen. It is not just a game story, but a story of a gamer's mental transformation. The character Momonga is wonderfully written, he is strong but his humanity is gradually lost. This is what makes the anime stand out.
Each character in the story is especially well-presented. The dark themes, politics, and clever plot twists of the anime give it depth. The visuals and background music also make it more interesting.
How a gamer tries to find his identity when he is caught between the real and virtual worlds. This mysterious, deep, and action-packed story gradually becomes more complex and interesting. For those who like to watch serious, dark, and strategy-based anime, Overlord is definitely an anime worth watching. Good luck 👍

With isekai I have a love/hate relationship because I find the genre repetitive in every way but then when you start watching an anime without much thought you get hooked and there you are, watching again another isekai. This has its charm, it must be said, the characters, the plot that episode after episode gets more and more complicated, in the case of Overlord the implicit comedy in their interactions, the ecchi moments it has with two of its characters; the truth is that it is a mixture of everything to end up being one of the isekai that I have liked the most. Maybe it doesn't have as much gore as others but well, nothing is perfect.
Con el isekai tengo una relación amor/odio porque el género me parece repetitivo en todos los sentidos pero entonces cuando comienzas a ver un anime sin pensarlo mucho te enganchas y ahí estás, viendo de nuevo otro isekai. Esto tiene su encanto, hay que decirlo, los personajes, la trama que episodio tras episodio se va complicando cada vez más, en el caso de Overlord la comedia implícita que hay en sus interacciones, los momentos ecchi que tiene con dos de sus personajes; la verdad es que es una mezcla de todo para terminar siendo uno de los isekai que más me han gustado. Lo interesante es que el videojuego cobró vida por lo que la trama y todo lo que pasa es real. Esto quiere decir que ahora este jugador va a tener que enfrentarse a los problemas y desafíos que supone estar en un mundo totalmente desconocido para él. La trama va de que este gran mago tiene que buscar adentrarse en este mundo para conocerlo, aprender de él y poco a poco ir haciendo que su nombre sea conocido, todo esto al mismo tiempo que protege a los suyos y va descubriendo cómo usar sus poderes y el alcance de estos. Creo que de las cosas más cool que tiene la historia es que esta persona, Momonga, tiene una conciencia humana pero como está viviendo en otro personaje tiene que asumir el rol de malvado, cosa que le cuesta muchísimo por lo que ver esa lucha consigo mismo a veces es muy graciosa.

Tal y como son los isekai acá veremos magia, hechizos, ogros, duendes, humanos conviviendo con estas criaturas y otra parte tratando de hacer su voluntad. En este caso hay un grupo teocrático, unos fanáticos religiosos, que están buscando eliminar cualquier posible amenaza para ellos. La línea de la trama es entretenida porque si algo uno ha aprendido de este género es que siempre pueden haber sorpresas, hay mucho material para eso. Es complicado aburrirse con estas historias, es verdad que si no es tu genero vas a estar predispuesto pero creo que en el fondo son bien divertidas y amenas de ver. Como dije, hay un poco de comedia, esto siempre viene bien y bueno, la naturaleza de algunas de las personajes hace que lo ecchi salga a flote, no es nada vulgar ni explícito, más bien va en la línea cómica de la historia.

Anyway, another isekai that I ended up watching because it got me hooked. The truth is it's worth it, it's good, it's 4 seasons so I imagine it will get more interesting. Overlord starts with the final hour of a hugely popular online Virtual Reality game known as Yggdrasil. Momonga has decided to see out the last moments of Yggdrasil's life by staying logged on until the servers are finally shut down.
Much to Momonga's confusion, he finds that he is still within the game, fully conscious and to make things a bit more exciting, the NPCs now have their own personalities! Also, some have rather large chests... you know where this is going 😅
Now the first episode has a bit of fan service, which I was most definitely not expecting!
But that aside, there is a huge similarity with Sword Art Online for sure. Just swap the names and faces and bam, clone we have.
Now I'm 5 episodes in at the time of writing and it is a fairly enjoyable series so far. A good bit of story, action, and humour over these episodes have made me want to continue.
I'm assuming there will be some more fan service as we go with how Albedo seems to go on about her love for her great master.

A very interesting anime that surely many of you will know, or maybe not... I actually watched it some time ago, I didn't have many expectations, but it ended up generating me certain emotions... if I personally had to summarize this series in one word, I would say immersive, I think that from the first episode, this anime immerses you in an incredibly detailed world that seems taken directly from an interesting Dungeons and Dragons campaign... And if you are a fan of RPGs or have spent many hours playing the well known MMORPGs, this anime will captivate you in a different way, it has that classic what if I got stuck in my favorite game scenario, but instead of being a weak NPC with no interesting abilities, on the contrary, when you enter this game you become the most powerful final boss of all...
The story starts with a guy named Momonga, who is the master of a once glorious guild in an online game that is about to shut down, in the real world, he is somewhat of a loner, but inside the game he is a skeleton lord with powers.... When the game servers shut down, he realizes that he is trapped as his character, Ainz, from there, the whole story starts to move, with this guy trying to figure out what the hell has happened while trying to make a name for himself in this new world that he doesn't know about.. In this new world, one of the best things this series does is the construction of everything that encompasses the video game world.. I mean, the attention to detail is very impressive, they show different kingdoms, races and even the political structures of this whole place..
It's not just a generic boring fantasy background, but on the contrary, this world feels very dynamic, and as you follow the protagonist on his journey, you are introduced to a lot of secondary characters, some of which barely get any screen time, but still feel very developed... It seems like every character, no matter how small, has a very deep history, specific motivations and little quirks, you can tell this world wasn't improvised.. it has depth and complicity, something I really like....

Un anime muy interesante que seguramente muchos de ustedes conocerán, o tal vez no.. yo la verdad lo vi hace algún tiempo, no tenía muchas expectativas, pero terminó generándome ciertas emociones.. si yo personalmente tuviera que resumir esta serie en una palabra, diría inmersivo, creo que desde el primer episodio, este anime te sumerge en un mundo increíblemente detallado que parece sacado directamente de una campaña interesante de Dungeons and Dragons.. Y si eres fan de los RPG o has pasado muchas horas jugando los conocidos MMORPG, este anime te va a cautivar de una manera diferente, tiene ese escenario del clásico que pasaría si me quedara atrapado en mi juego favorito, pero en lugar de ser un NPC débil y sin habilidades interesantes, al contrario, al entrar a este juego te conviertes en el jefe final más poderoso de todos..
La historia comienza con un tipo llamado Momonga, quien es el maestro de un gremio que alguna vez fue glorioso en un juego en línea que está a punto de cerrar, en el mundo real, él es algo solitario, pero dentro del juego es un señor esqueleto con poderes.. Parece que cada personaje, por muy pequeño que sea, tiene una historia muy profunda, motivaciones específicas y pequeñas peculiaridades, se nota que este mundo no fue improvisado.. tiene profundidad y complicidad, algo que a mí me gusta mucho..
And speaking of the characters, here they are not just mindless inhumans.. they all have their personalities, emotions, and are fiercely loyal to Ainz, some, like Albedo and others, are terrifyingly competent and devoted.. While others bring a comic touch with their over the top craziness.. what I really love about this series is how the ultimate boss interacts with them, he's not the most confident guy in the world, but because of the way the NPCs perceive him, as some sort of godlike figure, he's forced to act like a great strategist and leader.. It's hilarious to see some things when he starts improvising in situations where everyone thinks he's playing very cleverly, when in reality he's just guessing most of the time, another thing I would like to mention is the music this anime has...
The soundtrack is simply awesome, it's one of those anime where the music not only complements the scenes, but elevates them in an amazing way.... The openings and endings are really great, and the background music is very epic, it fits like a glove. There is a specific track that plays whenever Ainz is about to do something, and I really like it, I was waiting for these musical moments, knowing that something big was about to happen... I think that if you are a fan of anime soundtracks, Overlord will not disappoint you, they capture perfectly the epic and dark atmosphere of this fantasy world...
Y hablando de los personajes, aquí no son simples inhumanos sin mente.. todos tienen sus personalidades, emociones, y son ferozmente leales a Ainz, algunos, como Albedo y otros, son aterradoramente competentes y devotos.. Mientras que otros aportan un toque cómico con sus locuras exageradas.. lo que realmente me encanta de esta serie es cómo el jefe máximo interactúa con ellos, no es el tipo más confiado del mundo, pero debido a la forma en que los NPCs lo perciben, como una especie de figura divina, se ve forzado a actuar como un gran estratega y líder.. Es divertidísimo ver algunas cosas cuando empieza a improvisar en situaciones donde todos creen que está jugando con mucha astucia, cuando en realidad solo está adivinando la mayoría del tiempo, otra cosa que me gustaría mencionar es la música que tiene este anime..
La banda sonora es simplemente impresionante, es uno de esos animes donde la música no solo complementa las escenas, sino que las eleva de una manera increíble.. Los openings y endings son auténticos temazos, y la música de fondo es muy épica, le queda como anillo al dedo. Hay cierta pista en específico que suena siempre que Ainz va a hacer algo, y realmente me gusta mucho, me encontraba esperando justo estos momentos musicales, sabiendo que algo grande estaba por suceder.. creo que si eres fanático de las bandas sonoras en los animes, Overlord no te va a decepcionar, logran capturar perfectamente el ambiente épico y oscuro de este mundo de fantasía..
One thing I want to clarify is that the animation can be a bit spotty, especially in the more recent seasons, where they rely heavily on CGI for some of the battle scenes.. it's not completely horrible, but it does show quite a bit, and if you're not a fan of CGI in anime, like me, it might take you a bit out of the immersion you were thrown into.... That said, I'm of the opinion that the character designs are very solid, a lot of the action scenes have these characters fighting in a very cool and exciting way, especially when Ainz goes into his OP mode and starts showing how broken his powers are, but back to the story, one of the things that may surprise you is how this series manages to balance the tones. . on one hand, it has a somewhat dark and serious story about a guy trapped in a world who is trying to find other players like him and understand what's going on, on the other hand, it has unique humor and light moments, especially in the interactions between the NPCs...
Another thing, technically the protagonist would come to be like the “villain” of this world, but since we are seeing everything from his perspective, it is really easy to root for him.. it is an interesting dynamic that makes you question what is right and what is wrong in that world, since not everything is black and white, things are not that easy... Thinking.. and if I had to mention something negative that didn't end up convincing me, I would say that the pacing can be strange at times.. there are certain arcs, especially the lizard men arc, that I didn't really like and didn't see it very necessary, and like this there are some others... Not that they are bad as such, but in comparison to the other more intense moments, they can feel a bit like filler....
Una cosa que quiero aclarar es que la animación puede ser un tanto irregular, especialmente en las temporadas más recientes, donde se apoyan mucho en el CGI para algunas escenas de batallas.. no es completamente horrible, pero sí se nota bastante, y si no eres fan del CGI en el anime, como yo, podría sacarte un poco de la inmersión en la que te habían metido.. Dicho esto, yo opino que los diseños de personajes son muy sólidos, muchas de las escenas de acción tienen a estos personajes luchando de una manera muy genial y emocionante, especialmente cuando Ainz entra en su modo OP y comienza a demostrar lo rotos que están sus poderes, pero volviendo a la historia, una de las cosas que puede sorprender es cómo esta serie logra equilibrar los tonos.. por un lado, tiene una historia algo oscura y seria sobre un tipo atrapado en un mundo que está tratando de encontrar a otros jugadores como él y entender qué es lo que está pasando, por otro lado, tiene un humor y momentos ligeros únicos, especialmente en las interacciones entre los NPCs..
Otra cosa, técnicamente el protagonista vendría siendo como el "villano" de este mundo, pero como estamos viendo todo desde su perspectiva, es realmente fácil apoyarlo.. es una dinámica interesante que te hace cuestionar lo que está bien y lo que está mal en ese mundo, ya que no todo es blanco o negro, las cosas no son tan fáciles.. Pensando.. y si tuviera que mencionar algo negativo que no me terminó de convencer, yo diría que el ritmo puede ser extraño en algunas ocasiones.. hay ciertos arcos, especialmente el arco de los hombres lagarto, que no me gustó mucho y no lo vi muy necesario, y como este hay algunos otros.. No es que sean malos como tal, pero en comparación con los otros momentos más intensos, pueden sentirse un poco como relleno..

En cuanto al desarrollo de personajes, Ainz es un poco paradójico.. por un lado es esta figura todopoderosa casi divina en un nuevo mundo, pero, por otro lado, sigue siendo un tipo normal que está tratando de resolver las cosas, no es alguien del otro mundo, su personaje evoluciona de manera sutil a lo largo del tiempo, a medida que se vuelve más cómodo en su papel como líder y comandante.. Los NPCs que lo rodean también tienen sus momentos para brillar, especialmente personajes como Sebas o Cocytus, quienes tienen sus propios mini-arcos que añaden mucha profundidad a sus personalidades.. yo le daría a este anime un sólido 8/10. No es perfecto, pero me logró entretenerme, si te gustan los juegos, y disfrutas de una construcción de mundo muy detallada, este anime es para ti.. Overlord is about a salary man who got isekai'd to the game he was playing as he became the character in his game, Momonga (later Ainz Ooal Gown). If this sounds familiar to you then it's because it's the same plot as Sword Art Online which created a sub genre in the isekai category. There in the new world, Ainz started to build his own kingdom with the help of his overpowered minions and ingame items that became real in the new world.
Overlord started out as a fun isekai anime as we see Ainz who was a salary man struggle to lead and manage his followers as well as try to learn about the new world. We see the usual humor that is a staple of anime. I liked the world building, history and politics. There was so much lore about the new world and it seems it's not just Ainz who was transported. There were other players before him that were transported centuries before.
However, as the series unfolds, it became apparent to me that the protagonist is evil. It's not a new concept as we see this in Dungeon and Dragons' Raistlin or Deathnote's Kira--it's just not common. The MC is justified in his actions for the survival of his guild but it harms the residents of the new world. In season 3 of the anime, there was no doubt that the MC is immoral after we saw the fate of Foresight and other adventurers who were lured into Nazarick. Sure, in season 2 the leaders of the Eight Fingers were tortured but they're criminals so it was kinda fine 😅 In episode 11 we saw the massacre in Katze Plains that even his allies feared Ainz. In the light novel, it's implied that Demiurge conducts human experiments and harvest human skin on live subjects to be used as scrolls.
The Sacred Kingdom showing in November 8 is based on the twelfth light novel, "The Paladin of the Holy Kingdom". It's about the human nation Roble Holy Kingdom led by its queen Calca Bessarez with the support of her friends Kelart and Remedios Custodio. They seek the aid of Ainz after their kingdom was attacked by the Demon Emperor, Jaldabaoth who is actually Demiurge in disguise. What follows is the destuction of the Roble Kingdom worse than the massacre in Katze Plains.
I've been following Overlord for years since it came out and I'm looking forward to this one. I'm kinda used to Ainz, the evil protagonist but sometimes I'm frustrated by how clueless he is. He's already the most powerful godlike being in the new world--his minions outmatch even the Slane Theocracy's trump card, the Godkin. Yet he prefers to conquer via stealth by placing spies and sometimes trying to use diplomacy or disguising as the hero adventurer Momon. He can just go and use force the way Demiurge attacked Roble Holy Kingdom. I'm guessing or hoping that there will be someone powerful enough to oppose him in the future and put an end to his evil.

I'm a really big fan of Japanese culture and one of my favourite things is their anime style! I'm a big fan of anime in general but no other country comes even close to the level of Japanese ones!
I must have watched over 200 titles over the years with the latest one been "Overlord", an action/fantasy "Swords Arts Online" like anime and damn I just devoured all 4 seasons of it in a week! Yeap, it's that good!
Our main character is Momonga, a legendary Undead Sorcerer player and one of the masters of "Ainz Oal Gown" guild in the MMORPG game called "Yggdrasil". The year is 2138 A.D.
After 12 years "Yggdrasil" devs decided to shut down the game due to players inactivity and our protagonist Momonga decided to spend those last few hours playing before game shuts down for good!
Game was supposed to go down on midnight but midnight passed and Momonga found himself still logged in to "Yggdrasil" and unable to log out! On top of that all NPCs (Non Player Characters) inside his guild seem to behave like real persons.
Momonga immediately realised that something is wrong so he commands his guild guardians to investigating the surrounding of the "Great tomb of Nazarick" (guild headquarters name) and realises he's stuck in a completelly different world than the "Yggdrasil" he knew.

Plot
First season is more like an introductional season, Momonga along with Nazarick guardian Nerberal Gamma heads out to explore this new world he is trapped at and for security reasons they decide to change their names to Momon and Nabe respectively as well as their appearances. On top of that he decided to change his main name to "Ainz Oal Gown".
As in every world, virtual or real one needs money so Momon and Nabe become adventurers, fight against villains, save people and acquire lots of money, fame and influence in the kingdom of E-Rantel.
Fun fact : Adventurer Momon is a swordsman despite "Ainz "Oal Gown"'s (same person) sorcerer class yet he is so BADASS!

After realising how this new world works "Ainz Oal Gown" puts forward his ultimate plan, to create a kingdom of his own with inhabitants from all sorts of races but easier said than done!
Ainz had to fight with all sorts of races like humans, lizardmen etc. to get hold of their territories as well as solve internal guild problems with brute force like "Shalltear bloodfallen's" rebelion.

Battle Scenes
I've watched numerous Shounen anime and I can't say that "Overlord's" battle scenes were the best but they were quite good! Animation really shows how powerful "Ainz Oal Gown" is and thank god there are not many chats in between battles!
My favourite battle was when Ainz single handedly faced an army of 200k humans! Just one of his spells were able to instantly kill 70k soldiers and at the same time summon a black demon powered by the souls of the dead who would hunt down the rest of the army.
"Ainz Oal Gown's" is in a league of his own when it comes to "Overlord" power ranking in all 4 seasons.
"Overlord" had a strong story, some nice jokes and lots of battling. Most MMORPG anime have a similar plot and this makes them kinda boring after watching a bunch of them but "Overlord" kept me wanting to find out what's gonna happen next!
It is not in the top of my MMORPG anime list but it's definitely a top 5, can't beat "How to pick up girls in a dungeon" hehe! If you are a fan of dark Shounen anime the I'd recommend you give this one a watch, 13 episodes in each of it's 4 seasons with a total watch time of 17,5 hours. Short and sweet!

In the year 2138, Yggdrasil, a DMMO-RPG (DIVE Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), is nearing the conclusion of its 12-year lifespan. Momonga, the final member of his guild, decides not to log out until the conclusion of the time limit. He gathers the Tomb of Nazarik's henchmen in the main hall and sits on the throne, waiting for the big event that is meant to put an end to all.
Then he wakes up to find himself a part of the game in an unexpected way. Suddenly, his subordinates begin to speak, and they appear to be more excited than ever.
And, even if the game menus are gone, the magic powers continue to operate, so Momonga establishes a new objective for himself: figure out what occurred, how much this world has changed as a result of these unexpected happenings, and perhaps even take it over.
Overlord's cast is rather typical for an Isekai, although it does have its own set of peculiarities. Momonga, the protagonist, occupies an undead body and hence lacks many of the emotions and mental patterns that normal humans possess.
Momonga's internal voice, which we presume is the voice of the person who originally performed Momonga in Yggdrasil, comes if he gets too passionate about something, and there's often a tiny bit of dissonance between Momonga's internal voice and Momonga's voice himself. It provides an intriguing character shift that is well worth investigating.
Instead of using the cliché for the great majority of Isekai out there, Overlord employs the heartless, scheming warlord type, which is a refreshing twist on the genre that I was more than delighted to see.
Momonga's entourage is a little one-dimensional, but that's part of their appeal. The guardians of Nazarik, who serve as the main supporting cast, are actually nonplayer characters who were brought to life by the same force that brought Momonga to this New World, and while this force gave them new life and complexity, they all adhere to the NPC code that Momonga and his guildmates created.
The connections between the different magic artifacts, as well as the levels of magic, are extremely genuine. We don't have a fourteen-year-old guy who, for whatever reason, is locked in a game and is super strong, with random harems built around him.
A 30-year-old guy who is tired with his mundane existence is physically projected into a realm. What's noteworthy is that he doesn't want to get out of that environment; instead, he wants to conquer it.
The protagonist is then in the body of an undead, which is interesting, and later in the series, we see how this trait undermines his humanity as well. Also going further in the series, Momonga/Ainz doesn't seem to mind killing innocent people. He isn't interested in saving the world, but he is interested in subjugating it to his will.
The first aim is to just make acquaintances and provide supplies to Nazarick, but ideas evolve as NPCs become self-sufficient.
There is no adolescent angst in OverLord; only strategy and a few pleasant sensations, which are occasionally abruptly ended by death.
Cons
Overlord's animation hasn't held up well over time. I'll give this series a pass because it's six years old and CGI wasn't exactly cutting edge back then. On the other hand, anime CGI isn't always so good these days.
Aside from the graphics, the timing of this show's release was fortunate. I doubt it would have had any influence if it had been released now.
Don't get me wrong: Overlord would have been a great Isekai anime if it had been released in 2022. It would have hit all the right notes and checked all the boxes.
Unfortunately, given the prevalence of Isekai anime, Overlord's safety would have been its greatest stumbling block.
Is this a minor problem? Without a doubt, a hundred percent.
After all, this anime delivered all you could wish for. It featured a compelling plot, engaging characters, thrilling action, and plenty of opportunity for development.
Overlord is a fantastic contribution to the growing trend of anime featuring characters who are "trapped in an MMORPG." The series stood out to me during its run because of its unique perspective on the sub-genre, from the fact that the setting isn't really from the same game to the quirky and engaging individuals who make up the main ensemble. I wouldn't call this one perfect by any means, as it suffers from a slow pace and a lack of time to prove some of its better features, but I still wholeheartedly suggest it to anybody who likes the idea.
