Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is a 2015 American 3D found footage supernatural horror film directed by Gregory Plotkin in his directorial debut, and written by Jason Harry Pagan, Andrew Deutschman, Adam Robitel and Gavin Heffernan. It is the sixth installment in the Paranormal Activity series. Most of the film takes place after Paranormal Activity 4 (2012), though the plot ties in heavily with the events…

Over the past week, I’ve devoted myself to reassessing the old horror franchise known as “Paranormal Activity.” This is the first time I’ve reviewed such a long film series, and it has been quite an experience. But everything that begins must eventually end... That’s right, this is the franchise’s final installment. (In 2021, a film titled “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin” premiered on Paramount+, but it is based on the original work and is not an official installment.)
“Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” was released in 2015 and remains, to this day, the last sequel in the series to continue the narrative established in the first film. Unlike the previous installment, this movie promised to be the definitive conclusion to the most famous found-footage franchise in the film industry... But it was so disappointing that it ended up sinking everything that had been built, and no one heard anything about paranormal activity again.
The final director in charge was Gregory Plotkin, someone who was no stranger to the franchise; in fact, he had been the lead editor from the second through the fifth installment. His greatest contribution to this film was breaking the golden rule that had laid the foundation for the franchise’s success: the fear of the unseen.

The story now follows the Fleege family: Ryan, the father, and his wife Emily care for their young daughter Leila. They have just moved into a new house in California. While preparing the Christmas decorations, Ryan discovers an old modified video camera, along with a box filled with VHS tapes dating back to the late 1980s.
While reviewing the videos, he sees young Katie and Kristi taking part in strange experiments and interacting with an unusual man. Ryan soon realizes that the camera’s strange lens can capture “the fourth dimension,” revealing dark anomalies in the surrounding environment.
Once it is discovered, the evil presence known as “Toby” turns its attention to little Leila, forcing her parents to unravel the mystery connecting it to their daughter...

By introducing a special camera that allows viewers to see the energy of the demonic entity, the film replaced tension and suspense with a 3D visual spectacle that I did not enjoy.
As someone who has witnessed the narrative journey of this saga, I would like to express my profound displeasure: ever since the previous film, I made it clear that adding a science-fiction element to a supernatural story was a terrible idea because it creates inconsistencies.
One example is the video camera used to display the ghost dimension. Who made it? Did it come from the future? Why was it inside the famous box of VHS tapes, which had moved from place to place for no apparent reason?
It is an important plot element, yet we never learn who made it or what it was made for. The film itself says that it was a highly advanced modified camera for its time, and since time travel is possible through magical portals, I deduce that it was a narrative seed intended to make sense in a future installment—a film that was never made.

As for the construction of the lore, over the years the saga wove a complex web involving the coven of witches known as “The Midwives.” Throughout the story, their true intentions remained a mystery. All we knew was that they were fanatical practitioners of the dark arts who made pacts with demonic entities. Their purpose was as simple as that: to sacrifice the “Marked” so they could be possessed by a demon.
So convoluted elements such as time travel through interdimensional portals seem incongruous to me. They are completely out of place and ruin the narrative’s internal logic. The screenplay of “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” simply cannot tie up its loose ends without creating plot holes on a broader level.
Now it turns out that the entire story revolves around an ancient prophecy connecting the destinies of Katie and Kristi with Leila’s. However, the mythology is forcibly rewritten, resulting in a mess. As I said, starting with the fourth installment, the franchise stopped being frightening and remained standing because of its mystery-driven story. But by stripping away the subtlety from a mystery that had been slowly built over nearly a decade, it gradually lost its appeal. Paranormal Activity is a story that has been rewritten and restructured so many times that it has lost its sense of coherence.

In the end, they sacrificed the possibilities they had and prioritized the narrative arc of “Toby,” the saga’s central antagonist. Since the first film, Toby had functioned as an invisible force that fed on its victims’ fear to gain influence in the physical world. He was a mysterious character within the story and was finally defined in this installment, but the plan that was supposedly being developed over many years feels improvised.
Toby is an almost omnipresent entity capable of existing in different eras, and a prophecy involving two children will allow it to take on a physical body. The film concludes his arc by pushing everything to the limit: the completion of the blood ritual required for him to cross the threshold from the spiritual plane and finally take on a human physical form. That was something I had wanted to see since the third installment, but the circumstances surrounding its execution were handled poorly.
There are elements and characters that are terribly underused, such as reducing important characters like Katie and Hunter to mere mentions and cameos. If Hunter was a key piece of the final ritual, how is it that he does not even appear in the film?

The only inconsistency in the saga that they bothered trying to fix was the fact that sisters Katie and Kristi did not seem to remember the events of Paranormal Activity 3. Apparently, the simplest solution to correct that detail was brainwashing.
As the conclusion to a long-running horror saga, this film is disappointing, incoherent, and frustrating. Without going into specific spoilers, the climax is a tremendous inconsistency and perhaps the franchise’s worst mistake: a complete betrayal that brings down the foundations built with such effort.

I do not know what the intention was behind the final sequences. If they were truly so confident that the saga could continue, Hollywood made a mistake.
It was a pleasure to watch these films again, and I had fun carrying out this evaluation. When I watched these movies as a child, they were different for me. Back then, I lacked critical thinking, so now I see the films through different eyes. That inspires me to continue writing reviews.

While The Blair Witch Project is a pioneer of found-footage horror films unable to survive in the second film, the appreciation is worthy given to Jason Blum with Blumhouse's production house capable of holding the Paranormal Activity up to the sixth series - if The Marked Ones spinoff is also counted. Blum had promised that The Ghost Dimension will be the cover of this once successful franchise. Instead of offering…More
