Recently I watched a film directed by the Italian director Dario Argento called Tenebre, and since I knew this director has several good films I decided to watch another one from him, this time it was Phenomena. The story takes place in Switzerland, some girls have been disappearing and there is the belief a killer is on the loose.

There is a new girl arriving at an all-female boarding school which reminded me a little bit of Suspiria because in that film there is a new girl arriving at a boarding dance school, and in this one, there is a new girl arriving at a regular all-female boarding school. However, this girl isn't your regular student. She has a special ability to communicate with insects but it is not like she talks with them using our languages, she rather communicates her desires telepathically and the insects respond doing whatever they can to help her. This is the fantasy part of the movie.

The horror part is, of course, the murders and we are able to see one of them happening because the girl with the power to communicate with the insects also sleepwalks, and coincidentally, she sees a murder in one of her night travels.

The director seems to have a fixation on producing horror films about murderers, the intrigue lies not in the fantasy part of the film, but rather in the mystery regarding the person responsible for so much killing. The fantasy part is important for solving the killings but it is never properly explored.

One thing I didn't enjoy was the clumsy acting not only from the main character who is the young girl but also from other adult characters such as one of the teachers. I don't know if this was the European preferred type of acting back in the 80s-70s but in the other Argento's movie I saw recently I remember being disappointed by the weird acting. However, it was enjoyable nonetheless.

If you are in the mood for a very original horror-fantasy flick, then Phenomena is clearly a good choice to watch. It does have some disgusting scenes in the end but nothing too extreme. It will probably be an enjoyable watch for most fans of the genre.

    The best

    • Very original story with a proper mix of horror and fantasy.

    The worst

    • Sometimes the acting was clumsy.
