Finding good horror is never easy, and last night I was disappointed with the movie I watched. I only decided to watch Possum because I have read some good things about this film but when I checked its reviews in several cites I was left with doubt. However, in the past, I have enjoyed movies with lower than 6 points in IMDb and lower than 60% in rotten tomatoes.

Possum isn't really a horror story but a drama story with creepy images involving a very ugly puppet that has spider legs and a bald human head. The owner of this puppet is a guy that looks like he is in his 40s, he doesn't seem very healthy, is lonely, and probably has mental health issues. The origins of his problems are made clear when we discover his childhood home and the person who raised him.

This poor guy didn't have a normal upbringing nor a functional family life. His current state is the result of all the traumas he has suffered throughout the years that make him incapable of achieving a normal satisfactory life. Since he isn't a normal person he might seem like a creep to other people which makes everything even worst.

The best thing in the film is the imagery, there are several breathtaking scenes, and there are also good scenes that could be considered psychological horror. The performance from the cast, especially from the main actor was good I guess. I mean, his entire character was very depressive and he portrayed that in a very accurate way.

The film also has a lot of silent references in certain scenes, for example, the reason why the puppet has long spider legs might be explained in one of the final scenes that is also the most tragic. The truth is this guy is simply a disturbed but not necessarily evil person. Misunderstood by others due to his bizarre family circumstances and with no way to fix the mental issues that, for now, only affect him. The use of grey and dark colors are probably also related to a tragic event he endured in the past.

Since this isn't a real horror movie I don't recommend it to horror fans unless you are just looking for creepy scenes with the disturbing puppet. I have to admit the puppet's design was very cool but not enough to make this film worth watching. Regarding the drama, it was dark but since the entire pace of the film was extremely slow it bored me out. Therefore, I can only recommend this film to people looking for a slow and dark drama.
