    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

    [English Version]

The police mystery genre is something that attracts a lot of my attention, I like to think along with the detective about what happened and take clues from the plot itself to build the puzzle, I am usually disappointed by films in which that puzzle is very easy to elucidate, on the other hand, those films that you have no idea what happens or will happen, but are based on a totally logical plot that in many cases are accompanied by twists in the plot, turn out to be the most attractive to me. That said, one film that had been recommended to me was Prisoners. Here is my opinion

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

A film that already with the appearance of Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal alone has a certain degree of curiosity in the proposal, actors already quite well known even since 2013, the year in which this film was released. We know about their character-building abilities, which I'll write about a little later.

    The Plot (no spoilers)

The focus of the film is based on the disappearance of some little girls, which plunges the family into a situation of high stress, this affects the mind so much that you can do unthinkable things to just get a clue that leads them to their whereabouts, on the other hand, the detective's work to investigate a case that seems to have no way out, time passes and the chances of finding the girls is decreasing with each day.

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

We find ourselves in a rather cold and rainy environment, a climate that accompanies the context of the story very well, a story that presents us with some clues about what happened, but which are certainly not enough to fully understand the event. The script is based instead of having such a cumbersome narrative for the case, it focuses on the doubts that the plot generates as time goes by, going from suspecting one person to another, taking us through a labyrinth where sometimes we find ourselves with no way out. This makes it interesting and a little more difficult to reach the point of being convinced of what has really happened and to find the culprit.

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

The plot is interesting. With two and a half hours of footage, the film takes its time to create the labyrinthine path of the case. For those who like this type of film, it is a necessary time, but for those who lack patience, it can be a bit stressful.

    Acting

Hugh Jackman in a role quite comfortable for him, carrying a performance with a style we have already seen and consistent with roles that have brought him to fame, I find him a great character, with flaws, obsessions, but with a great love for his family, which takes him to the end to bring the most important people in his life back together.

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

Jake Gyllenhaal plays a detective and investigator role that he has also played before, so he does quite well from a certain point of view, but in my opinion, Hugh Jackman is the one who represents the character we will remember the most in this film.

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

Is it difficult to solve the case?

It is not as easy as we might think, because the script makes us doubt on several occasions, so it is not so simple, but there are revealing scenes where we can find the case a few minutes before its revelation or plot twist, in my case, I must confess that I could not hit the case, just minutes before that revealing point of the film.

    7.5 ⭐

    Final Opinion

It is an entertaining film, which leads us to understand even psychological aspects of both the father of the family, the detective and the antagonist. Covering psychological profiles always spices up this kind of narrative very well increasing its appreciation.

For me, it is a film with a correct running time, of course, there will be those who prefer to see something shorter and it is totally understandable.

    [Source](https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

In the end we have a 2013 film, which I recommend watching for all the context, the performances and aspects that can get out of control for the father of the family. I recommend it.

  2. Prisoners(2013)@teknon649d

    Screenshot_20240916-180409_1.png

This film I'm about to introduce to you is one of those thrillers that stays with you long after the credits roll. Directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, the 2013 film is a dark, gritty and intense psychological thriller that dives deep into the morality of desperation and what lengths a person will go to in order to protect their loved ones. It’s a tense ride that makes you question your own beliefs about justice and vengeance. Truth is, we only get the real answers when we've been in the same shoes as whoever needed justice or vengeance.

    Synopsis(no spoilers)

    Screenshot_20240916-190141_1.png

The movie revolves around Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman), a father whose daughter, Anna and her friend, Joy, are kidnapped on Thanksgiving. Desperate and frustrated with the slow progress of the police investigation, led by Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), Dover takes matters into his own hands. When a mentally troubled man, Alex, becomes the prime suspect but is released due to a lack of evidence, Dover kidnaps and tortures him in an attempt to find out where the girls are. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes a psychological chess match between Dover’s descent into vigilantism and Loki’s determined but methodical pursuit of the truth.

    Screenshot_20240916-182609_1.png

    My Review and Rating

Prisoners is a masterclass in suspense, tension and atmosphere. Denis Villeneuve creates a world so bleak and cold that you can almost feel the dread creeping through the screen. The pacing is methodical, letting the tension build with each passing scene and just when you think you’ve figured things out, the plot takes another dark turn. It’s not just a whodunit, it’s a harrowing exploration of morality, revenge and of course the emotional toll of tragedy.

Hugh Jackman delivers one of the most intense performances I've seen as Keller Dover. His portrayal of a father pushed to the brink of madness is heartbreaking and terrifying at the same time. You can see the internal battle he’s fighting: the need to protect his family versus the line he’s crossing in the process. Jackman perfectly captures the desperation and rage that Keller feels, making you question whether you’d act differently in his shoes.

    Screenshot_20240916-190428_1.png

Jake Gyllenhaal, on the other hand, is just as captivating as Detective Loki. His portrayal of the meticulous, almost obsessive detective is the perfect counterbalance to Jackman’s raw emotional energy. Loki’s calm, controlled demeanor slowly unravels as the case grows more complex and he plays this unraveling with an understated intensity.

Now, while this film is a near-perfect thriller, it’s not without a few flaws. At 2 hours and 30 minutes, the film can feel a bit long at times. Some scenes seem to drag and you find yourself wondering if the plot is taking a detour just to prolong the tension. I also had to chuckle at Detective Loki’s name. I mean, Loki, really? Was it a subtle nod to the Norse god of mischief or just an attempt to make him sound cool? Either way, it was one of those moments where I couldn’t help but think, “Okay, we get it — he’s unpredictable.”

    Screenshot_20240916-184156_1.png

Another thing that can be a bit frustrating is how many red herrings the plot throws at you. There are moments when you feel like you’re being led down a never-ending rabbit hole of false leads. It works to build suspense, but there were times I felt like I needed a detective’s notepad just to keep track of all the misdirections.

But despite these minor gripes, ‘Prisoners’ is a gripping, intense and emotionally raw film that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The cinematography is stunning, with the gloomy atmosphere perfectly mirroring the dark and hopeless tone of the story. The haunting score amplifies the tension in just the right moments, making the movie even more emotionally overwhelming.

    Screenshot_20240916-190649_1.png

Finally, Prisoners is a dark, unsettling exploration of human nature. It’s not just about finding the missing girls; it’s about what happens when fear and rage push a person past their moral breaking point. Villeneuve’s direction, combined with powerhouse performances from Jackman and Gyllenhaal, makes this a must watch for anyone who enjoys a good psychological thriller.

That said, I leave it at a rating of 4.5/5.

"Prisoners" is a psychological thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve, scripted by Aaron Guzikowski and released in November 2013.

The story focuses on two families, the Dovers and the Birches, whose daughters mysteriously disappear during a rainy day.

Hugh Jackman plays the desperate father of one of the missing girls, while Jake Gyllenhaal plays a detective on the case.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

The film explores dark and disturbing themes, such as kidnapping, revenge and morality in extreme situations.

As time moves on and hope diminishes, the father of the missing girl decides to take justice into his own hands, facing moral dilemmas and testing the limits of his own humanity.

"Prisoners is a masterfully directed film with a talented cast delivering powerful and captivating performances.

The tension and suspense is maintained from start to finish, keeping the viewer in a constant state of intrigue and angst.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

The cinematography and bleak setting contribute to an oppressive, claustrophobic atmosphere that reflects the desperate, dark world in which the characters find themselves trapped.

It was well received by academics and audiences and grossed over $122 million at the box office, surpassing the $46 million it cost to produce.

It was recognised at several awards and film festivals.

Academy Awards: The film received a nomination for Best Cinematography for the outstanding work of Roger Deakins, who masterfully captured the dark and tense atmosphere of the story.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=276566)

BAFTA Awards: "Prisoners" was also nominated for Best Cinematography at the BAFTA Awards, again recognising the work of Roger Deakins.

Critics' Choice Movie Awards: The film received several nominations, including Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, and Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins.

Saturn Awards: "Prisoners" was nominated for Best Thriller and Best Actor for Hugh Jackman at the Saturn Awards, which honour the best in genre film.

  4. Prisoners (netflix movie review)@roadstories1023d

    English Text

Greetings Hivers, happy weekend to all. Well it is already Saturday night but for some the night is young. So I got back to work to be active on the net because it is the duty to be.

Today was practically a home day so I took the opportunity to watch with my partner a movie that I had on my list for a long time that I had been putting off watching because I thought it was too long.
However, the two and a half hours are totally worth it, there is not at any time any scenes or seconds/minutes in which you can feel bored, dazed or involved in the same silly situation.
This plot is definitely the opposite, and if I think about it again it made me challenge and question certain behaviors and decisions.

Definitivamente me volvería loco.

    English Text

But well, before I make a certain approach to this subject, first you should know that this is a film that contains a lot of suspense and realities.

We still live in a world where child abduction and infanticide exist, unfortunately it must be said and recognized. It is quite bitter because in a sane head does not enter the idea of harming an innocent who is just beginning to live.
However, this plot raises such dark reality mixed with a touch of religion. I don't want to say that religion is the reason or guilt of these acts. It is a rather absurd choice on the part of the murderers and kidnappers.
I am not a parent so I don't know what it feels like to have your daughter(Son) suddenly go missing and be kidnapped from one moment to the next in your own home. It would definitely drive me crazy.

    English Text

In this plot two girls are kidnapped by an alleged young man of legal age, who was roaming the streets in a trailer.

Apparently this guy is shown with a special personality and spectrum, which define him as a 10 year old boy.
However, as well as the family members, I also wondered about one thing in particular. And that is how someone with a 10-year-old mentality can drive and have a driver's license.
I have taken it as a bad approach or analysis of the police officers, because if it is part of the script itself, I would think it is a mistake or as they say over there "conchita de mango", to make the viewer think even more bad about the alleged kidnapper.
All this fills both families with chaos, and of course the pressure, sadness and desperation makes everything get out of control.
In particular the reaction of the father of one of the girls hints at a question. What would you do?
This question is based on the assumption that the police do nothing, basically let the alleged kidnapper go free for lack of evidence and valuable time is being lost to find the girls.
As a parent myself I don't think I would have patience, much less accept someone telling me to calm down when my daughter is out there suffering and not knowing what they are doing to her. Just no, to lose a child, or have them kidnapped is to lose my mind.

    English Text

This is exactly the focus of the film in my view, on the one hand a grief-stricken father, and on the other someone who is willing to do anything to find his daughter.

The intrigue of knowing who the culprit is and the whereabouts of these girls is somewhat disconcerting. Many are the hypotheses that I made, but in the end between clues all the pieces fit together.
I loved the final touch that they gave to the plot, because there is a key element in this story that saves the life of someone whose hope to see the light again was basically nil.

"Prisioners", a movie you won't be able to let go of until the end

Hello my dear friends of Movies & TV Shows, today I bring you a movie to hold on to the screen and not let go until the end of the story. It is a 2013 movie, starring the great Hugh Jackman and the admirable Viola Davis, and we will also see other actors currently very well known, but let's wait a moment, I'll tell you what this is about.

"Intrigue", "The Suspicion", or "Prisoners" as its original name is, is a movie about the kidnapping of two little girls one day.

As a result, an investigation begins that seems to have no end. A day passes, two days, three days and the girls do not appear. Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman), the father of one of the girls, begins to take justice into his own hands and try to locate his daughter. For this he "kidnaps" a suspicious adult with a below average IQ, who although he had been ruled out as the abductor and released, continues to share data that evidences that the man had contact with the girls. For example, he sings the song his daughter sang for Christmas, or tells the father of one of the little girls phrases that indicate he saw her.

Keller Dover loses his mind because of this and captures and tortures him to obtain the whereabouts of his daughter, but at the same time something else is happening. Something that exceeds this man's confinement, and that is that there is someone else behind the disappearance of the two girls, and no one suspects that this is the person responsible for the capture.

    Opinion

I know that those who read me know that I leave my opinion for the end, because it is the subjective of the post, but today... I can't, I simply loved this movie and I can't continue a spontaneous writing without expressing this that wants to come out for a while now, so I'm going to let the Belu flow into the objective review post right now.

I stopped watching "so dark" movies a long time ago. Although I share with you numerous of these stories as may be "Black Mirror", "Welcome to Eden" or others, stories like those in "Prisoners", I try to avoid them, as they are very possible cases, very real, that somehow I feel they have a low vibe, so I don't like to make photo in that. But here's a little secret: these movies are usually very well made (the good ones) and I'm a big fan of the intrigue itself. I do like to be glued to the TV and can't tear myself away from it, although nothing after Games of Thrones has achieved that effect.

If you enjoy this as much as I do, I must recommend the movie, but yes it can be a bit delicate, because the ending in particular, is painful, not because something too negative happens (I will not ruin the ending for you, relax), but somehow you realize how a very unbalanced person can end with the psychological development of a child by simply trying to set a scene against or in favor of something.

    Plot

Sorry this change of order even for me is strange, but, although I thought of deleting lines and writing following my organization, I think this touch is very positive, because it is the first production that demands my opinion before going to the objective.

The story tells of two families who meet, both with two children each. One has a son and a daughter and the other has two daughters, but one girl from each family is about 5 years old.

The point is that these little girls go out to play, supervised by their older brothers, they approach a caravan, and the brothers notice that there is someone inside, so they tell the girls to stay away, hours later, the girls disappear.

One family is dismayed, but the other is destroyed, the mother of one of the girls is surviving on psychotropic drugs and her husband is the one who has captured the suspect, who in the end ends up surprising us all (I want to tell you but I'm not going to because the film is really worth watching).

We see an active presence of the police authorities, but at the same time we see attempts to "lower their arms". At this point you can see how the police, the security service of the town, has inside people who do not care at all about what happens, like other professionals who are really involved with the situation.

    Trama

I will add something in the opinion

I really like everything at play in this story: courage, persistence, you even touch on dehumanization, when Keller says "that man is no longer a human being" for having kidnapped the girls. Resignation is observed, destruction is clearly seen, it was about resilience from multiple perspectives.

And here we can see very contrasting positions in the face of the same situation. A family practically lost in the devastating emotions of the disappearance of their little girl with blinding impulses; and another family trying to understand that there is no turning back, with pain but from a more measured emotion.

In the end, this production may stir your deepest feelings of pity, but it is something very positive, because at least from my point of view, when a film or series moves your emotions and feelings in this way, it is because it is really good.

  6. Prisoners | Movie review | 10/10@josehany1103d

Today I want to recommend this mystery movie, which I thought was very good and worth watching.

In fact, it is a film that is already a decade old, perhaps that is why it is so good, we cannot deny that nowadays many films lack originality and many times the ones that are good are even based on real events, that leaves a lot to be said about the imagination...

In this film I could recognize two great actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman. The first we can see in about a dozen movies that have been successful and the second we can recognize for his role as Wolverine. So the presence of these actors motivated me to watch the film.

Let's talk a little about the movie: It deals with a kidnapping, two families are gathered in a house to celebrate their friendship and talk a little, both families have two children, made up of an older and a younger. So yes, both families have two little 6-year-old girls.

That day everything seemed very calm, until one of the girls remembers that she had a red whistle that she had forgotten the previous time and tells the other girl that they will go together to look for her whistle, at first the families would not let the girls out to the front yard but the girls ended up convincing their parents that it would only be brief, since the girl wanted to find her whistle very much because for her it meant protection.

And that's how time passes and the girls don't come back, so it becomes suspicious and everyone goes looking for the girls but can't find them and they remember that the only suspicious fact is that there was some kind of van parked near the home and was gone. Many hours had passed and they could not find the girls for whom they were missing.

The father of one of the girls decides that he will find the culprit at all costs, even if there must be things that he would never imagine, he knew that someone had definitely taken them, he was very sure.

This is how this whole mystery story begins, the movie lasts more than 2 hours where it really makes you doubt everything you see, and you are anguished for not knowing where the girls are, you want to find them as much as their parents.

What I really liked is that nothing was as it really seemed to be, it's definitely a movie worth watching.

  7. Prisoners (2013)@minhajulmredol1476d

The beauty of thriller films is that they start with an incident, proceed as if we all can predict also they are meeting our expectations, and suddenly it starts to break them. Suspension and twists in the story seem to blow our minds and make us speechless. Often we get to watch movies based on the recommendation from our friends passed on to us, and we often get bored with seeing the story moving slowly or too simple in the beginning, but when the story starts to show its true colors we get hooked and can afford no breaks, sometimes not even for a piss.

    prisoners_ver6_xlg.jpg Image Source

Prisoners is a crime thriller film directed by Denis Villeneuve and it was from a screenplay written by Aaron Guzikowski. Denis Villeneuve's recent movie Dune was a great success, people loved that work too much, on seeing his name I remembered that movie.

In short, if I want to give a little bit of an idea about the story then I might start with the disappearance of the kids, yeah, two-family most likely neighbors spending their holiday together. Two kids from two families disappeared or we can say kidnapped from seeing the suspicious evidence presented before us. Even the police caught someone, an RV driver, he was there and was running away while police caught him. Surprisingly that man turned out to be a person with an IQ level of ten years kid, he can barely understand what was asked of him let alone kidnapping. But we all know, thriller films love to play with us through this kinda character, right? Psychopath killers!

Due to the lack of solid evidence, they couldn't keep hold of him and had to let go. But the parents, can they accept the only possible lead to their kids getting away? Here comes the character Keller Dover, the father of Anna, one of the kidnapped kids. This character is filled with anger and desperate to find his daughter, it's obvious but he was way more desperate than the other parents. He kidnapped Alex, that boy in that RV. Dover takes him as his own prisoner and tortures him on and on to get out information about his daughter. On the other hand, detective Loki is also stressed to find a way out, he has been digging and digging to find those disappeared kids. So how's this going to end?

So this was simply the kickstart of the movie, if discussed furthermore then the thriller and suspense waiting for its audience are likely to get spoiled. But I wanna express some of my impressions and feelings throughout the movie, as the name says Prisoners the whole story justifies this name. Some are physically imprisoned and some are mentally, also the maze that chains one after another may confuse you at first but in the end, it does get cleared. The ending scene ends in an ambiguity, most of the audience may think about further incidents, and also a part of the audience may choose something else like I did. Seems confusing? Okay, I will stay away from this.

Dover played the character exactly what every father would intend to do losing their kids, and can go to any extent if needed, that's what he did while some of the audience may find his actions brutal too. Well, the endings did change many things but I will stand with the sentiments. On the other hand, Detective Loki, I was impressed with his calmness and patience, and the way he handled the situations. And the characters I haven't spoken much about, like Alex's aunt Holly, and Bob Taylor also have some impact that I am not willing to expose as they might turn into spoilers.

In short, thriller films are best to keep a mystery, the audience needs to experience the suspense and twist on their own like I did and got satisfied with all the characters, direction, and story. In conclusion, a must-watch for all the thriller or mystery lovers. Will love to rate it 8 out of 10, Happy Watching!

  8. Prisoners (film): Tough to watch because of the violence@gooddream2519d

This film was originally released as NC-17 due to the graphic nature of it. It features an all-star cast and is atypical of especially Hugh Jackman to be involved in. Despite the fact that later it was considered to be a "top ten film" of 2013, most people I speak to have never seen it.

I'm kind of on the fence about whether or not a person really needs to remedy that situation if they haven't seen it.

    prisoners_ver5.jpg source

So basically this movie is a drama/thriller and has two of the world's biggest stars in it with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal and for most people that is reason enough to give it a go.

The story, without giving it away is about a father's search for his kidnapped daughter and how the law doesn't do enough to progress finding her and therefore he must take matters into his own hands and become a bit of a demon himself.

    [source](https://moviebastards.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/prisoners-2013-movie-franklin-birch-alex-jones-keller-dover-torture-scene-bathroom-hugh-jackman-terrance-howard-paul-dano.jpg)

It is worth noting that pretty much everyone's performance in this film is amazing, in particular Paul Dano who you might recognize as the religious snake from "There Will be Blood." I always have a lot of time for Terrance Howard as well and it seems as though he doesn't take on many roles.

To be honest with you i think the only person who seems a bit "wooden" in this film is actually Jake Gyllenhaal, but to be fair I have never really held him in high regard as an actor, but I will admit that I am biased in this thinking.

The movie made a bunch of cash and was nominated for "best cinematography" which is a category that to be honest, I've never really understood what it actually entails.

For the most part, this film is interesting and worth seeing. That being said, some of the scenes are tough to watch because of the gruesome nature of what is going on. For me, the most surprising part about this film was that it was made at all in the first place, and that Wolverine was chosen for the lead role. It is interesting to note that Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio were involved in this film at one point and for me anyway, I am very happy that Leo ended up NOT being in it.

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" i give Prisoners the overall rating of....

  9. Prisoners (Film): Review.@martinmcfly2817d

This movie was created based on an original screenplay written by Aaron Guzikowski, who since 2009 were trying to turn it into a movie. Bryan Singer and Antoine Fuqua were the first candidates to direct the film, nevertheless Denis Villeneuve was the one who directed it finally. Actors such as Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio were interested in embodying the protagonists of this story, and although Wahlberg ended up being executive producer, ultimately the main roles were played by Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. Finally, in 2013 the film premiered, and it was a success.

    Plot

Keller Dover faces a father's worst nightmare. Anna, her six-year-old daughter, has disappeared, along with her friend Joy, and as the minutes turn into hours, she panics. The only clue: an RV that was previously parked on his street. Detective Loki directs the investigation, who arrests the driver of the RV, Alex Jones, but the lack of evidence forces him to give him back his freedom. Although the police follow multiple tracks, the pressure is increasing when they know that their daughter's life is at stake. The desperate Dover decides that he has no choice but to deal with the matter personally, but how far is this desperate father willing to go to protect his family?

    Opinion

What would you be able to do if your son or daughter disappears? It is a subject that nobody responds with honesty because we are all willing to do even the impossible, which admits unnatural acts that are not typical. Prisoners is a film that portrays this act. He uses it as a detonator for an incredible plot that feels like suspense but it's just a drama.

In the film we have two families that one day suffer the abduction of two daughters. The suspect of the crime is mentally ill. Everything indicates that this person is responsible because there is no one else who seems to be capable of kidnapping the girls, but the lack of corpses and the lack of evidence make it difficult to convict him for the crime. A father decides to take justice into his own hands and a policeman must find the truth about what really happened.

The loss of faith. The human despair The violence that is born with everyone. They are three elements that nourish an excellent script, an exhaustive and clearly obscure study of the human species when the not necessarily beautiful routine of a family is broken.

Many could classify the film as an aggressive proposal and manipulated by the writer who wants to cause shock. And it is not a lie. Prisoners is that kind of movie, it's a thriller but it's also a perfectly executed drama. The main reason why I am sure this is affirmed is that the film never focuses on a general point, it always shows everything from its two main characters. If they analyze well, there are not as many turns as it seems; it is the perception of a character with whom we have identified what allows us to feel that violent whirlwind of emotions and say, "if I had been there, I would have done the same".

Denis Villeneuve directs with precision a film that depends absolutely on the capacity of his actors. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal play one of their best roles in their careers as father and police respectively. Jackman looks like a pressure cooker about to explode at all times. But Gyllenhaal is the one who breaks the mold to which we are accustomed and perplexes us with his extraordinary interpretation of a character that is not necessarily innovative. But we have never identified so much with a policeman; The closeness felt by the viewer with this character is natural.

The director does not leave spaces for the probability of the emotion of the moment and always subjects his characters to suffering. The spectator witnesses the complete transformation of a human to a monster by feeling the purest act of love. It is not easy to stop wondering who are the true prisoners of the film: whether the girls, or the suspect, or the policeman who must break the typical scheme to find the truth, or the father who must think the worst in order to save his daughter.

The film lasts 156 minutes where the script builds, piece by piece, an intense drama, disturbing and, even terrifying, about parents who will cross all legal and moral limits in order to find their daughters, policemen who they observe the drama with professionalism but without humanity, individuals guilty for their innocence and criminals who take refuge in their evil and in God as justification of their actions.

    Score

    9/10

The film is simply recommended, I have not met someone who has not liked, from people who have seen many movies, to people who just wanted to see a panicle to pass the moment.

  10. 'Prisoners' by Denis Villeneuve Review: An excellent film questioning morality@namiks2960d

    Prisoners.jpg

Denis Villeneuve is a director that's suddenly popped up in more recent years. Known for his 2000 indie film Maelström, but more recently surprising both critics and viewers with far more expensive and ambitious projects like Enemy, Sicario, and Arrival -- and we can't forgot about the challenging Blade Runner 2049 sequel.

Prisoners, released in 2013, was one that I for some reason failed to ever notice. In fact, prior to watching it, I had no knowledge of who was in the film (outside of the poster) or what the film was about. I don't often do this, but it's wonderful when the film is nothing but a pleasant surprise, exceeding all expectations; even when those expectations are low.

The film holds a strong sense of morality throughout, constantly testing the boundaries between right and wrong. It's dark, cold, and promotes this sense of dread among the characters; that this world is filled with evil that sometimes needs to be equally combated with the same evil. It displays the lengths some will go when pushed beyond their limits; and in this case, it's in the event that your daughter has been kidnapped, with few leads hinting at her possible location.

Prisoners' narrative follows a dark history of child abduction, and a strange maze-like game that resembles a large cult mentality: for the children held captive, they must solve the maze, or they die. Unknown to the vigilante fathers and the police, this strange turn of events that's occurred for decades slowly unravels before them. The characters and the performances push this surreal narrative to a realistic feel; with their anger and misguided sense of morality having the viewer actually feel they are in the right, that their actions are justified, and the others are not.

Jake Gyllenhaal's performance as a roughed-up cop -- Detective Loki -- that's never left a case unsolved is beyond astounding. His character's dedication to his job and ensuring justice by any means has a conflicting feel to it. Sometimes he's seen pushing his boundaries as a cop just a little too far, but one can't help but believe he's truly doing it for the best, perhaps for personal reasons unknown to the viewer. And Hugh Jackman's performance as a father willing to take all possibilities into consideration to ensure the return and safety of his daughter is both easy to connect with, but also frightening given the extremities.

That said, Paul Dano is forever a surprise on screen. His ability to perform as a wide range of characters lacking social skills and understanding is on another level. With his performance being both creepy, unnatural, and resulting in the viewer actually feeling sorry for our potential criminal. These performances only heighten the dark, moral-questioning narrative and excellent writing of Aaron Guzikowski. It's not a film to miss.
