Two films that I saw on the same day and that have in common in their plots, that lies serve for the protagonists to achieve their goals, although not everything ends well in one of them. I wanted to make a double review to give my opinion on these two films.
Dos películas que vi el mismo día y que tienen en común en sus tramas, que las mentiras sirven para que los protagonistas consigan sus objetivos, aunque no todo acabe bien en una de ellas. Hice una doble reseña para dar mi opinión sobre estas dos películas.
Purple Hearts
We all lie. It is part of human nature. We are lied to from a young age when our parents deceive us by telling us that Santa Claus will bring presents for Christmas. In our daily lives, when we tell our curious neighbor that we are fine with a fake smile. Or when we make up an excuse to miss an appointment. Many call them white lies, because they don't hurt anyone.
There is another type of lies, they are those that are used to achieve some goal, to get something we want and one of the ways to get it is lying. But this is dangerous, they are lies that can cause harm to another person or even to oneself.
Lying is wrong, even more so, when with those lies laws are being broken and the risk of the truth being revealed can have terrible consequences for those involved. But this happens every day, everywhere in the world, I don't want to be a moralist or preacher of absolute truth, when society itself can push you to lie to survive.
Although I am a faithful follower of laws, they are guidelines created by people with a political ideology and agenda according to the time in which they come into effect. What the main characters in the movie do is wrong, but it is the flawed system that puts them between a rock and a hard place and in order to live, extreme measures must be resorted to.
I started watching the film without much expectation, in the face of the many reviews published about the film, I decided to see it. I succumbed to the temptation of watching what is popular, what is fashionable on streaming platforms, but I did it consciously. It was the best decision, because not only did I really like it, but I needed to see something fresher and different from what I usually see.
I like movies with romance, believe it or not. This teen romantic drama handles the codes of the genre very well. Director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who has extensive experience in TV series, knows how to use the right tricks to influence the viewer's emotions. I could detect the moments when the filmmaker seeks to make viewers cry with the story and I am sure many young people did so while watching the movie.
Todos mentimos. Forma parte de la naturaleza humana. Desde pequeños nos mienten cuando nuestros padres nos engañan diciéndonos que Papá Noel traerá regalos por Navidad. En nuestra vida cotidiana, cuando le decimos al vecino curioso que estamos bien con una sonrisa falsa. O cuando nos inventamos una excusa para no acudir a una cita. Muchos las llaman mentiras blancas, porque no hacen daño a nadie.
Hay otro tipo de mentiras, son las que se utilizan para conseguir algún objetivo, para conseguir algo que deseamos y una de las formas de obtenerlo es mintiendo. Pero esto es peligroso, son mentiras que pueden causar daño a otra persona o incluso a uno mismo.
Mentir está mal, más aún, cuando con esas mentiras se están infringiendo leyes y el riesgo de que se revele la verdad puede tener consecuencias terribles para los implicados. Pero esto sucede todos los días, en todas partes del mundo, no quiero ser un moralista o predicador de la verdad absoluta, cuando la propia sociedad puede empujarte a mentir para sobrevivir.
Aunque soy un fiel seguidor de las leyes, son directrices creadas por personas con una ideología política y una agenda según la época en que entran en vigencia. Lo que hacen los protagonistas de la película está mal, pero es el sistema defectuoso el que les pone entre la espada y la pared y para poder vivir hay que recurrir a medidas extremas.
Empecé a ver la película sin muchas expectativas, ante la gran cantidad de críticas publicadas sobre la película, decidí verla. Sucumbí ante tentación de ver lo popular, lo que esta de moda en las plataformas de streaming, pero lo hice conscientemente. Fue la mejor decisión, porque no sólo me gustó mucho, sino que necesitaba ver algo más fresco y diferente a lo que suelo ver.
Me gustan las películas con romance, aunque tu no lo creas. Este drama romántico adolescente maneja muy bien los códigos del género. La directora Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, que tiene una amplia experiencia en series de televisión, sabe utilizar los trucos adecuados para influir en las emociones del espectador. Pude detectar los momentos en los que la cineasta busca hacer llorar a los espectadores con la historia y estoy seguro de que muchos jóvenes lo hicieron mientras veían la película.
What is the story? A girl, daughter of a Latin American immigrant who dreams of succeeding in the difficult world of music, has a group of friends with whom she plays and works in a bar every night, but financial debts are accumulating, she is also diabetic and must follow a treatment of insulin injections that costs a lot of money in the country of the American dream. One night a group of young Marines arrives at the bar, soon to leave for a mission in the Middle East. In the group of soldiers is Frankie, whom Cassie has known since she was a little girl. There is also Luke, a handsome Marine who is attracted to her, although she pretends not to like his behavior. But the two will need each other to fabricate a lie that will work in their favor.
As you can guess, these are two completely different people in everything, who end up doing something together out of necessity and then the flame of love will arise.
Cassie is a liberal girl, pro free speech, pro minority rights, pro life, pro everything. A young progressive girl who lives in a bad financial situation and urgently needs health insurance to get her medicine, it's a matter of life and death. Luke is the typical American tall, handsome, with a body that makes any girl fall in love (and guys too, right? Inclusion) patriot, looks like he voted for Trump, but has problems because of his former drug addiction and needs money to pay off a debt.
I really enjoyed the movie while watching it. I got swept up in its story, although there are little details that don't quite add up, but that was something I only thought about after I finished watching it. It's a viewing success on the Netflix platform and I totally get that.
Much of that success is due to its female lead, played by Sofia Carson, who was a Disney girl and has many fans who surely saw the movie, but the actress also excels in her character, there was a moment when I hated her and it provoked me to have her in front of me to tell her, stupid girl, how do you not need Luke, why are you treating him like that, you're alive because of him! I was annoyed by several scenes and that means Carson got it right.
Besides, she also participated in the writing of the script and I liked that they tackled some topics like illness, war, racism, drugs, family conflicts, etc, although everything is touched a bit superficially, without delving too much into it, remember that it's a movie where the main thing is the love that is born between two people who are different and have different life goals.
Days before I had read a Clickbait style news, yes, I also succumbed to the temptation of reading that kind of information on the internet. As I get older I get softer. The headline said that Sofia Carson had changed a love scene, but in a sensationalist tone. When I read the news, it was simply a scene where they had to make love, she suggested that it was nicer and conveyed more if they simply embraced and I give her absolutely right, it is a very nice scene from the movie. In love, a kiss and a hug can be more powerful in conveying that emotion. This girl knows what she's doing.
Among the inconsistencies I noticed after watching it, is that Cassie's character, who stays throughout the movie with that attitude of being self-sufficient, pro rights for all, representative of female power, in one part of the movie (beware, this may be spoiler) is saved from going to jail by the sacrifice of that alpha male she hated so much, but with whom she ends up completely in love. I laughed a lot, but these are small details that don't matter, just enjoy this love story.
Purple Hearts works, it's a good romantic movie, it will make you laugh, cry and even sing, because Sofia Carson sings well and stands out with the songs composed for the movie. Despite the small details that were a bit off-key, it is a movie that is enjoyable.

Una chica, hija de un inmigrante latinoamericano que sueña con triunfar en el difícil mundo de la música, tiene un grupo de amigos con los que toca y trabaja en un bar cada noche, pero las deudas económicas se van acumulando, además es diabética y debe seguir un tratamiento de inyecciones de insulina que cuesta mucho dinero en el país del sueño americano. Una noche llega al bar un grupo de jóvenes marines que pronto partirán a una misión en el medio oriente. En el grupo de soldados está Frankie, a quien Cassie conoce desde que era una niña. También está Luke, un apuesto marine que se siente atraído por ella, aunque ella finge que no le gusta su comportamiento. Pero los dos se necesitarán mutuamente para fabricar una mentira que les favorezca.
Como se puede deducir, se trata de dos personas completamente diferentes en todo, que acaban haciendo algo en común por necesidad y entonces surgirá la llama del amor.
Cassie es una chica liberal, pro libertad de expresión, pro derechos de las minorías, pro vida, pro todo. Una joven progresista que vive en una mala situación económica y que necesita urgentemente un seguro médico para obtener su medicina, es una cuestión de vida o muerte. Luke es el típico americano alto, guapo, con un cuerpo que enamora a cualquier chica (y a los chicos también, ¿no? Inclusión) patriota, parece que ha votado a Trump, pero tiene problemas por su antigua adicción a las drogas y necesita dinero para pagar una deuda.
Disfruté mucho de la película mientras la veía. Me dejé llevar por su historia, aunque hay pequeños detalles que no acaban de encajar, pero eso fue algo en lo que solo pensé al terminar de verla. Es un éxito de visionados en la plataforma Netflix y lo entiendo perfectamente.
Gran parte de ese éxito se debe a su protagonista femenina, interpretada por Sofía Carson, que era una chica Disney y tiene muchos fans que seguro vieron la película, pero la actriz también destaca en su personaje, hubo un momento en el que la odié y me provocó tenerla delante para decirle, chica estúpida, ¿cómo no necesitas a Luke? ¿Por qué lo tratas así? ¡Estás viva gracias a él! Me molestaron varias escenas y eso significa que Carson lo hizo bien.
Además, ella también participó en la escritura del guion y me gustó que abordaran algunos temas como la enfermedad, la guerra, el racismo, las drogas, los conflictos familiares, etc, aunque todo se toca un poco superficialmente, sin ahondar demasiado en ello, recuerden que es una película donde lo principal es el amor que nace entre dos personas que son diferentes y tienen objetivos de vida distintos.
Días antes había leído una noticia estilo Clickbait, sí, también sucumbí a la tentación de leer ese tipo de información en internet. A medida que me pongo viejo me vuelvo mas blando. El titular decía que Sofía Carson había cambiado una escena de amor, pero en un tono sensacionalista. Cuando leí la noticia, simplemente era una escena en la que tenían que hacer el amor, ella sugería que era más bonito y transmitía más si simplemente se abrazaban y le doy toda la razón, es una escena muy bonita de la película. En el amor, un beso y un abrazo pueden ser más potentes para transmitir esa emoción. Esta chica sabe lo que hace.
Entre las incoherencias que noté después de verla, es que el personaje de Cassie, que se mantiene durante toda la película con esa actitud de ser autosuficiente, pro derechos de todos, representante del poder femenino, en una parte de la película (ojo, esto puede ser spoiler) se salva de ir a la cárcel por el sacrificio de ese macho alfa que tanto odiaba, pero del que termina completamente enamorada. Me reí mucho, pero son pequeños detalles que no importan, sólo hay que disfrutar de esta historia de amor.
Purple Hearts funciona, es una buena película romántica, te hará reír, llorar y hasta cantar, porque Sofía Carson canta bien y se destaca con las canciones compuestas para la película. A pesar de los pequeños detalles que desentonaron un poco, es una película que se disfruta.
Not Okey
Are social networks bad? No. Social networks are not bad, they are simply a tool that can be used in many ways, from just using them as a means of entertainment, to as a business tool. Of course, behind all of them there are corporations that want our data, but it is up to us how much information we put on them on a daily basis.
We are the ones who begin to misuse these tools, transforming them into elements where lies are present in every image or phrase that people share with the world.
Social networks have broken down the barriers between people that were impossible to contact before, now you can even insult a celebrity you don't like. I did it once with Jamie Foxx, after he came out in some pictures supporting the dictatorial regime, I had to vent by insulting him on Instagram. I got carried away with anger and became a hater.
The rise of social media also brought with it, the birth of a new type of celebrities. Those celebrities who are called influencers and who are measured by the amount of followers they have and the reach and influence over their followers. Although there are many accounts that with only three thousand followers already call themselves influencers in the description and claim to be public figures, in reality not everyone reaches that status, everyone wants to be an influencer, either to eat for free in restaurants and earn money through brands, others simply want to be famous.
There is an excessive hunger to be famous and many have seen the possibility of achieving that dream, especially young people, where they want to do anything silly that becomes news or viral video and get the recognition they want so much, without taking the time to measure the consequences of losing anonymity and being in the public eye. It's not all glamour and luxury, it's all a world full of lies.
I started watching Not Okey only knowing that it was the second film by Quinn Shephard, whose film Blame I had seen some time ago and had left me wanting to see more from the filmmaker. It has taken her several years to make another film.
No Okey I liked almost all of it. I say almost all of it, because the film is divided into two genres. At first it comes across as a satire of the world of influencers and how social media influences people. I had fun with several scenes where everything was treated with black humor and sarcasm. I think this is the strong point of the film and one that many people will enjoy.
¿Son malas las redes sociales? No. Las redes sociales no son malas, simplemente son una herramienta que se puede aprovechar de muchas maneras, desde sólo usarlas como un medio más de entretenimiento, hasta como una herramienta de negocios. Por supuesto, detrás de todas ellas hay corporaciones que quieren nuestros datos, pero depende de nosotros la cantidad de información que pongamos a diario.
Somos nosotros los que empezamos a hacer un mal uso de estas herramientas, transformándolas en elementos donde la mentira está presente en cada imagen o frase que la gente comparte con el mundo.
Las redes sociales han roto las barreras entre personas que antes eran imposibles de contactar, ahora puedes incluso insultar a un famoso que no te gusta. Aunque hay muchas cuentas que con solo tres mil seguidores ya se autodenominan influencer en la descripción y se colocan que son figura pública, en realidad no todos llegan a ese estatus, todos quieren ser influencer, ya sea para comer gratis en restaurantes y ganar dinero a través de las marcas, otros simplemente quieren ser famosos.
Existe un hambre desmedida por ser famoso y muchos han visto la posibilidad de alcanzar ese sueño, sobre todo los jóvenes, donde quieren hacer cualquier tontería que se convierta en noticia o video viral y obtener el reconocimiento que tanto desean, sin tomarse el tiempo de medir las consecuencias de perder el anonimato y estar en el ojo público. No todo es glamour y lujo, todo eso es un mundo lleno de mentiras.
Empecé a ver Not Okey sólo sabiendo que era la segunda película de Quinn Shephard, cuya película Blame había visto hace tiempo y me había dejado con ganas de ver más de la cineasta. Ha tardado varios años en hacer otra película.
No Okey me ha gustado casi toda. Digo casi toda, porque la película se divide en dos géneros. Al principio se muestra como una sátira del mundo de los influencers y de cómo las redes sociales influyen en la gente. Me divertí con varias escenas en las que todo estaba tratado con humor negro y sarcasmo. Creo que este es el punto fuerte de la película y que mucha gente disfrutará.
What's the plot? Danni Sanders works in a digital magazine of influencers and clickbait news. She is assigned to the Photo Editors department, but she really wants to be a famous writer, to be an influencer. After a meeting with one of those idiot influencers, she lies that she is going to attend a writer's retreat in Paris. She creates a fake website and takes pictures that she then alters with digital programs to make believe she is in France, her plan seems to succeed, but some terrorist attacks in Paris, make everything complicated and she starts to tell one lie after another. Soon success and the desired fame will knock on his door, but the pillars of the new celebrity are false and the collapse will be inevitable.
The story may sound a bit far-fetched, but it has a lot of reality. How many influencers have not lied like this? How many do not live in a lie through the networks? Although apparently we see them happy and enjoying themselves, all that may be a lie. One should not blindly believe an instagram photo, when will the consumer learn?
The film also reminded me of a case some time ago, in which a Spanish actress, whose name I don't remember, made up a trip to Los Angeles, where she was supposedly negotiating contracts to make movies in Hollywood. The Spanish press made articles about her, supposedly a future star of American cinema, but later it was discovered that it was all a lie. The actress had made Photoshop montages. She had not traveled, everything was a lie. The scandal and the reproach of the public opinion was not long in coming, she was hit with everything. Reality overcomes fiction, the Danni Sanders really exist.
The protagonist of the film, played by actress Zoey Deutch, uses lies as a means to obtain recognition, her motivations are more vile, it is not because of economic necessity, nor because she is sick, it is only vanity and the need to be famous. The terrorist attacks where there were dead and wounded, serve as a springboard to continue lying and reach greater heights of popularity. She is a selfish and vile character, who only thinks of herself and the benefits that gives her the status of digital celebrity.
A world that is also full of lies and everything is based on appearances. She herself will live all the lie that surrounds influencers. It is in this whole part of the movie where the story grows, showing the falsehood, making fun of that world and how the masses can be easily manipulated.
I would have liked the whole movie to have that tone, but unfortunately, at one point in the story everything becomes more serious, dramatic and from my point of view, the worst mistake that is made is the final part, where it wants to give a moral lesson to the viewer, with a very emotional speech of an important character, but where it is mixed up to the racial struggle. This is the reason why it is not a rounded film.
It had to be approached as a black comedy, a satire has to aim and shoot at all sides, not position itself with any side. When the director, who also wrote the screenplay, takes a position and uses the ending to give a moralizing message, she fails completely.
That doesn't take away from the fact that Not Okey is enjoyable, it has more good and positive points. I only reject the ending, I don't like movies that take a position and want to give me a sermon, however emotional and true it may be, I prefer the script not to take a position and leave everything to the discretion of each viewer.
Not Okey tackles with humor the world of lies in social networks and what people are capable of doing to achieve ephemeral fame, regardless of the consequences and the damage they can cause to others. I liked the film and recommend it.
¿Cuál es el argumento? Danni Sanders trabaja en una revista digital de influencers y noticias clickbait. Esta asignada al departamento de Editores fotográficos, pero en realidad quiere ser una escritora famosa, ser una influencer. Tras una reunión con uno de esos influencers idiotas, miente diciendo que va a asistir a un retiro de escritores en París. Crea una página web falsa y hace fotos que luego altera con programas digitales para hacer creer que está en Francia, su plan parece tener éxito, pero unos atentados terroristas en París, hacen que todo se complique y empiece a contar una mentira tras otra. Pronto el éxito y la ansiada fama llamarán a su puerta, pero los pilares de la nueva celebridad son falsos y el derrumbe será inevitable.
La historia puede sonar un poco inverosímil, pero tiene mucho de realidad. ¿Cuántos influencers no han mentido así? ¿Cuántos no viven en una mentira a través de las redes? Aunque aparentemente los vemos felices y disfrutando, todo eso puede ser una mentira. No hay que creer ciegamente una foto de instagram, ¿Cuándo aprenderá el consumidor?
La película también me recordó un caso de hace tiempo, en el que una actriz española, cuyo nombre no recuerdo, se inventó un viaje a Los Ángeles, donde supuestamente estaba negociando contratos para hacer películas en Hollywood. La prensa española hizo artículos sobre ella, supuestamente una futura estrella del cine americano, pero luego se descubrió que todo era mentira. La actriz había hecho montajes con Photoshop. No había viajado, todo era mentira. El escándalo y el reproche de la opinión pública no se hizo esperar, se le golpeó con todo. La realidad supera la ficción, las Danni Sanders existen de verdad.
La protagonista de la película, interpretada por la actriz Zoey Deutch, utiliza la mentira como medio para obtener reconocimiento, sus motivaciones son más viles, no es por necesidad económica, ni porque esté enferma, es sólo vanidad y necesidad de ser famosa. Los atentados terroristas donde hubo muertos y heridos, le sirven de trampolín para seguir mintiendo y alcanzar mayores cotas de popularidad. Es un personaje egoísta y vil, que sólo piensa en sí misma y en los beneficios que le da el estatus de celebridad digital.
Un mundo que también está lleno de mentiras y todo se basa en las apariencias. Ella misma vivirá toda la mentira que rodea a los influencers. Es en toda esta parte de la película donde la historia crece, mostrando la falsedad, burlándose de ese mundo y de cómo las masas pueden ser fácilmente manipuladas.
Me hubiera gustado que toda la película tuviera ese tono, pero por desgracia, en un momento de la historia todo se vuelve más serio, dramático y desde mi punto de vista, el peor error que se comete es la parte final, donde se quiere dar una lección moral al espectador, con un discurso muy emocionante de un personaje importante, pero donde se mezcla hasta la lucha racial. Es el motivo por al cual no es un film redondo.
Había que enfocarlo como una comedia negra, una sátira tiene que apuntar y disparar a todos los lados, no posicionarse con ningún bando. Cuando la directora, que también ha escrito el guion, se posiciona y utiliza el final para dar un mensaje moralizante, falla por completo.
Eso no quita que Not Okey sea disfrutable, tiene más puntos buenos y positivos. Sólo rechazo el final, no me gustan las películas que se posicionan y me quieren dar un sermón, por muy emotivo y verdadero que sea, prefiero que el guion no se posicione y deje todo al criterio de cada espectador.
Not Okey aborda con humor el mundo de las mentiras en las redes sociales y lo que la gente es capaz de hacer para conseguir una fama efímera, sin importar las consecuencias y el daño que pueden causar a los demás. La película me ha gustado y la recomiendo.
