La reina de los condenados es una película del año 2002 que vi por primera vez hace años, creo que era una preadolescente cuando la vi. En su momento, me pareció que la película era muy fascinante e hipnotizante, ahora que la he vuelto a ver porque me acordé ella, me di cuenta de que realmente no es tan impresionante como la recordaba, pero sigo rescatando su estética.
El nombre Lestat les podrá parecer familiar por la famosa película "Entrevista con el Vampiro", donde este personaje es interpretado por Tom Cruise o si eres lector sabrás que este particular vampiro es creación de la gran Anne Rice (que en paz descanse), escritora muy popular destacada en el género vampírico que escribió varios libros, entre ellos "Entrevista con el Vampiro", "Lestat el Vampiro" y "La reina de los condenados". Yo tengo en físico el libro de Lestat el vampiro, el cual compre precisamente porque vi la película de la cual hablaré hoy.
Lestat es un vampiro bastante particular, un poco exagerado y promiscuo que se ha ganado el cariño de muchos, por eso es uno de los personajes recurrentes de las historias de Rice. Yo quedé intrigada por él gracias a la representación del personaje en "La reina de los condenados", pero si leemos los libros y vemos "Entrevista con el vampiro", nos daremos cuanta de que realmente no es la mejor representación, de hecho muchas personas se sintieron indignadas con la película.
Como su humilde servidora, al momento de ver el filme desconocía todo esto, solo quede encantada por la estética y el romance presentado que tal vez rozan lo "crepusculoso". Hoy día puedo notar sus fallas, pero no todo es malo, hay muchas cosas rescatables de la película, según mi punto de vista, así que hablemos un poco de eso.
Queen of the Damned is a 2002 film that I first saw years ago, I think I was a pre-teen when I saw it. At the time, I found the movie to be very fascinating and mesmerizing, now that I've watched it again because I remembered it, I realized that it's not really as impressive as I thought it was, but I still find its aesthetics very appealing.
The name Lestat may sound familiar because of the famous movie "Interview with the Vampire", where this character is played by Tom Cruise or if you are a reader you will know that this particular vampire is the creation of the great Anne Rice (may she rest in peace), a very popular writer, outstanding in the vampire genre who wrote several books, among them "Interview with the Vampire", "Lestat the Vampire" and "Queen of the Damned". I have the physical book of Lestat the Vampire, which I bought precisely because I saw the movie I will talk about today.
Lestat is a very particular vampire, a bit exaggerated and promiscuous who has won the affection of many, that's why he is one of the recurring characters in Rice's stories. I was intrigued by him thanks to the representation of the character in "Queen of the Damned", but if we read the books and watch "Interview with the Vampire", we will realize that it is not really the best representation, in fact many people were outraged with the movie.
At the time of watching the film I was unaware of all this, I was only enchanted by the aesthetics and the romance presented, which perhaps bordered on the "twilight". Today I can notice its flaws, but not everything is bad, there are many things that can be rescued from the film, according to my point of view, so let's talk a little about that.

La película, aunque se llama "La reina de los condenados" no está basada en este único libro, sino que es una mezcla entre "Lestat el Vampiro" y la mencionada anteriormente, lo cual resulta curioso, porque la historia de la reina de los condenados es sumamente interesante, pues se basa en la cultura Egipcia, pero los directores decidieron enfocarse más en Lestat, que en la historia de Akasha, quien es la reina en cuestión. Claro, los hechos presentados en la película no son del todo aislados, la historia de Akasha y Lestat si existe en los libros, no todo es un desastre, pero podia haber sido desarrollada mejor, siendo que la película se llama "La reina de los condenados" y no "Lestat el vampiro", considero que debieron darle más protagonismo a Akasha y no tanto a Lestat.
En el filme, Lestat después de estar dormido por muchos años, despierta en un mundo más moderno y decide ser un rockstar (si amigos, esto también pasa en los libros). Sé que puede sonar un tanto ridículo para algunos, pero siendo objetivos, si uno vive tantos años supongo que se querrá experimentar cosas nuevas...plop. En fin, el extravagante vampiro empieza a llamar la atención tanto de humanos como vampiros, particularmente de Jesse, una investigadora paranormal que más adelante descubrirá que es descendiente de Maharet (quien fue enemiga de Akasha). Jesse siente mucha fascinación por Lestat y el mundo vampírico, así que lo sigue, lo investiga, entre otras cosas.
Los acontecimientos de la película se van desarrollando, conocemos un poco del pasado de Lestat, un poco de Jesse y entre diferentes eventos Akasha es despertada. Cuando la reina despierta, desea volver a someter a Lestat para que sea Rey junto con ella, pero este no está de acuerdo con como Akasha se maneja, puesto que es muy cruel, así que decide rebelarse y bueno, no caigamos en spoilers mayores.

In the film, Lestat, after being asleep for many years, wakes up in a more modern world and decides to be a rockstar (yes friends, this also happens in the books). I know it may sound a bit ridiculous to some, but being objective, if you live so many years I guess you want to experience new things...plop. Anyway, the extravagant vampire begins to attract the attention of both humans and vampires, particularly Jesse, a paranormal investigator who later discovers that she is a descendant of Maharet (who was Akasha's enemy). Jesse is very fascinated by Lestat and the vampire world, so she follows him, investigates him, among other things.
The events of the film unfold, we learn a little of Lestat's past, a little of Jesse's and between different events Akasha is awakened. When the queen wakes up, she wants to subdue Lestat again to be King along with her, but he does not agree with how Akasha handles herself, since she is very cruel, so he decides to rebel and well, let's not fall into big spoilers.

En general la película tiene sus buenos momentos, alguna que otra escena bien lograda y un estilo vintage de época respetuoso, pero recuerda un poco a las películas del género "camp", lo cual puede ser algo bueno o malo dependiendo de los gustos de cada quien.
Si hablamos de los personajes, visualmente me parece que si cumplen con cómo se supone debían verse. El Lestat de la película, siento que no se diferencia mucho físicamente al personificado por Tom Cruise. Jesse es pelirroja como digna descendiente Maharet y la actriz que la interpreta me parece muy bella, incluso recuerdo que pensaba que era como un hada porque sus rasgos faciales son muy bonitos, parece una criatura mágica. Ahora, quien se lleva el premio al mejor cast es la espectacular Aaliyah (que en paz descanse, partió muy joven de este mundo y tenía una carrera brillante por delante) por su interpretación de Akasha, ¡dios mío! ¡Qué espectáculo! Aaliyah sé lucio con su papel. El manerismo, su mirada, la sensualidad que derrochaba más el outfit con aires egipcios crearon una gran representación de la reina Akasha, lo que hace que me parezca aún más triste que no le hayan dado más protagonismo.
La estética del filme, a pesar de todo a mi parecer es buena, como mencione más arriba, es una de las cosas que rescato (aunque encontraremos uno que otro maquillaje exagerado o mal hecho, sobre todo en Lestat), pero si hablamos de ejecución y fidelidad a la historia original, tiene grandes fallos, no por nada no fue muy bien recibida por el público. También está que fue lanzada después del fallecimiento de Aaliyah, por lo que los fans no sabían qué pensar exactamente, si era que querían hacer dinero con su memoria o rendirle tributo. Yo no puedo saber a ciencia cierta que pretendía con eso, pero si disfrute mucho de Aaliyah en la película, creo que recordarla así, bella y poderosa, es una buena forma de honrarla.

If we talk about the characters, visually it seems to me that they do fulfill how they were supposed to look. The Lestat in the movie, I feel, is not very different physically from the one played by Tom Cruise. Jesse has red hair as a worthy Maharet descendant and the actress who plays her looks very beautiful to me, I even remember thinking she was like a fairy because her facial features are very pretty, she looks like a magical creature. Now, who takes the award for best cast is the spectacular Aaliyah (may she rest in peace, she left this world very young and had a brilliant career ahead of her) for her interpretation of Akasha, my god, what a spectacle! Aaliyah did a great job with her role. The mannerism, her look, the sensuality she exuded plus the outfit with Egyptian airs created a great representation of Queen Akasha, which makes me even sadder that she wasn't given more prominence.
The aesthetics of the film, despite everything in my opinion is good, as I mentioned above, is one of the things I rescue (although we will find one or two exaggerated or poorly done makeup, especially in Lestat), but if we talk about execution and fidelity to the original story, it has major flaws, not for nothing was not very well received by the public. There's also the fact that it was released after Aaliyah's death, so fans didn't know what exactly to think, if they wanted to make money with her memory or pay tribute to her. I can't know for sure what they intended with that, but I enjoyed Aaliyah a lot in the movie, I think remembering her like this, beautiful and powerful, is a good way to honor her.

Si me preguntan, personalmente pienso que esta película tenía el potencial de ser mucho mejor de lo que fue. El cast fue bueno, la estética también, ¿por qué tuvieron que fallar en el desarrollo?, preguntas que atormenta en las noches, ja, ja, ja.
A pesar de las malas críticas y de estar conscientes de que la película no es una obra maestra, si solo buscas entretenimiento, te va a gustar. Yo le tengo cariño por verla en mi pre adolescencia, además que tiene un estilo bien aesthetic del MTV de aquellos años.
If you ask me, I personally think this movie had the potential to be much better than it was. The cast was good, the aesthetics were good, why did they have to fail in the plot?, questions that haunt me at night, ha ha ha ha.
Despite the bad reviews and being aware that the movie is not a masterpiece, if you are just looking for entertainment, you will like it. I'm fond of it because I saw it in my pre-teen years, plus it has a very aesthetic style of the MTV of those years.
