  1. Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul Review@dlstudios2790d

There are two things I am going to say upfront. The first is this show is a sequel to Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, which I have not seen. The second is a lot of what I have to say about this show will be spoilers. I will avoid spoiling the show at first and will give you a warning once I get into spoiler territory. With that, the review can begin.

Virgin Soul takes place ten years after the end of Genesis, and in that span of time, a new king has risen to power and, somehow, gained the power to defeat the gods and defeat the demons. The world is kind of built up around the conflict between the three groups. In the middle of all of this is our main character, Nina. Nina is a Dragonkin, who are normally able to transform between their human and dragon forms. Nina is a bit different, but we'll get that.

I will start off with one of the things that I actually did really like about the show, and that holds true throughout the shows twenty-four episodes, and that is the battles are very well crafted. The action is intense, fast, and easy to follow. The Rag Demon is especially fun to watch as he 'teleports' short distances and calls out these bizarre black tendrils all wall wielding his sword and flying through the air. The animation during these fights is also spot on and a joy to watch.

Really the visuals overall in this show are fantastic. You have the order of Orleans, an order of Knights that, while currently not the most prestigious order, were originally the most honored of the Kingdoms Knights, and their garb looks appropriately noble and valiant. In contrast, to them are the newly formed Onyx Knights, essentially the acting hand of the new King. Their gear is very dark and jagged in form and serves as a fantastic contrast

Beyond the shows visuals it becomes very hard to give it praise though. The first big issue, in part, comes from not having watched Genesis. At first, the show feels stand alone, and to a degree it is. You don't have to watch Genesis to understand the events of Virgin Soul, and even the lead character wasn't even in the first one. I didn't realize the show was a sequel until later when other characters started getting introduced, and it felt like there was so much the show just kind of expected me to know in order to care about what was going on, so I started looking some things up. Sure enough, that was the case, many parts of the show require you to have watched Genesis to know why you should care about these people and to understand bits about the world, but you don't actually have to watch Genesis to follow the plot at all.

Yet at the same time, I don't think all of it can be attributed to not having seen the sequel. I'll get into that in a bit when I start spoiling things, but for here I'll say that the most interesting characters were Jeanne D'Arc and Favaro, who were very interesting characters and the time you do spend with them gives you a great understanding of much of what they went through without having to be told the whole story. In contrast, Nina, our lead character, is not very interesting at all and serves as one of the major anchors holding the showdown.

There is one thing that is entirely unavoidable when talking about this show and Nina, and that is her ability to turn into a dragon. Unlike others of her kind, she can't do it at will, and instead whenever she is near a good looking boy that 'gets her heart racing' she is at risk of transforming. Basically, she turns into a Dragon whenever she wants some dick, and this is crucial to the plot. In fact, early on The Rag Demon has a plan to fight back against the humans, and the entire plan hinges on him trying to trigger this transformation. And the problem is this isn't a comedy, this is a serious incident that will get a lot of people killed, and the show is trying to make me take this seriously.

Characters will also constantly just happen across their means of escape or some stroke of luck allows the plot to move forward. The Rag Demon happens to have The Holy Child in his care by sheer chance, Nina transforms at just the right time, Favaro just happens to be in the Jail Nina goes too later on which happens to be Jeanne D'Arcs holding place as well, several time characters just happen too stumble across each other when convenient, and the list goes on. It starts to feel lazy in no time at all.

This doesn't even touch on several scenes that just get dumb the more you think about it. There was the scene where Nina is just casually flying around as a Dragon where everyone should be able to spot her, and she knows she's in for trouble if she gets found out as a Dragon. Minor spoiler, she can control it at that point in the story, so the fact this is happening is absurd. That's just one example of character actions making no sense given the circumstances they are currently in.

There is one more problem with Nina in this show, and that is how she just never seems to understand the gravity of the situation around her. She is carefree to the point you think you could just drop her anywhere in any story, and nothing about her attitude or demeanor would change. Furthermore, she is largely unconnected from anything actually going on in the main story, despite being the main character.

And I won't spoil it, but the villain's plan is just stupid. Multiple instances his plan should have been halted completely as he was nearly killed a few times, but the only reason he continued on was some very lucky judgments on the parts of characters who actively tried not to kill him, or Lucifer getting involved in the conflict late in the show, something that never would happen if the Rag Demon didn't just so happen to escape alive. So much of his plan falls apart because there is so much that obviously could go wrong at any given moment. An absurd amount of luck was necessary for him to pull off this plan. Much of this goes along with the convenient events moving the plot forward I mentioned above.

While you get some fantastic characters in the side cast like the previously mentioned Favaro and Jeanne, they can't make up for the lead character, the flimsy plot points, and a villain whose plan becomes silly in several respects. While there is likely much that would go smoother if you had watched Genesis, I don't think that is enough to save this shows from the flaws it has. I would give this show a pass.
