After watching X-Men: Dark Phoenix last week, I discovered the most recent Rambo movie on Netflix. So, since I never got to watch Sylvester Stallone in his last Rambo movie in the cinema, this was a perfect opportunity to stream the movie. But, is it worth it?

I remember watching the trailer before the release of the movie. It looked kind of interesting, but not something that I would die to watch. Honestly, what can an old Sylvester Stallone give us as John Rambo in this movie?

To my great surprise, I actually enjoyed the movie. This is why!

Why I enjoyed Rambo 5: Last Blood?

First of all, this is a real pensioner story. In the first 25 minutes, nothing really happens, and we just get to learn some stuff about Rambo, his house, his life, and his family. But, somehow, I wasn't really bored while watching... I guess the chocolate had a positive effect on me at this moment.

But, then it was time for Liam Neeson and Taken to be implemented! If you keep on reading, I might spoilt parts of the story, but I will try not to spoil a lot!

The daughter of his brother lives with John, but she is determined to visit her real father in Mexico. The visit doesn't go well, and she goes to a party where she is drugged and taken captive and used within the sex industry. Rambo comes to get here, and this is Taken, just with Sylvester Stallone instead of Liam Neeson.

Rambo makes a mess in Mexico, and now the bad guys come to take him down... it is time for Macaulay Culkin and Home Alone. I guess you know what that means? The bad guys decide to go to the property of Rambo to get their revenge!

So, that is the main story of the movie... and it is kind of amusing. Sylvester Stallone feels like a real oldie who barely manage to walk around, but somehow, he gets the adrenaline and speed needed in the time of trouble.

To be honest...

Rambo 5: Last Blood isn't a fantastic movie. But, somehow it managed to take me into the story and enjoy it all. It was surprisingly brutal, especially in the last part of the movie, but Rambo is kind of nice, so after tricking people into his traps, he always shoots them quickly in order for the bad guys not to suffer too much... with the exception of the last guy... that is just brutal! I was surprised to see it. If you have seen the movie, you will be surprised as well. To be honest, I actually looked on my wall instead of at the screen there, simply because it was more brutal than what I like in movies.

All in all, Rambo 5: Last Blood is entertaining, it is action for pensioners, and it works... simply because it is Rambo and we like his presence.

If this would have been a movie with no history, without Rambo (Sylvester Stallone), and just a nobody in the main role, it would have been a disaster. But, given its history, the character of Rambo, and his awesome knives... it works!

My Rambo 5: Last Blood score: 7/10

Have you seen Rambo 5? How did you like it? I would love to hear your honest thoughts! The movie currently has a 6.2/10 score on IMDb, while it has a 27% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. That is kind of slaughter, but the audience score is about 80%. So, it might be that it is a poor movie, but still, people love it.

I admit, when i saw this was going to be released I felt pretty much the same way as everyone else. However, then the media made some sort of negative reference to the film and mentioned conservatives and Trump and I was thinking: "Well now I have to go see it!"

The movie carries on about as you would expect with a Rambo film: The story isn't near as important as the action is - and the action is just fantastic.

Stallone does the same thing that he has always done with Rambo: Sly plays him as a recluse introvert with mad military skills (and a touch of PTSD) that really just wants to be left alone.

The opening sequence shows him helping out with some rescue operation during a flash flood and this is actually the only bad part of the film... I am not really certain why this was included in the movie because it has nothing to do with the rest of the movie and none of the people invovled (other than Rambo) ever appear in the film again. UPDATE - it later occurred to me that this sequence actually isn't in the North American version of the film

John Rambo's fury has to be brought on by something and this time around it was the abduction of his "daughter" that is actually not related to him, but he sees her as family. This is not a spoiler - if you have half a brain it was pretty easy to deduce that this was exactly what was going to happen. Through some various things that involve Mexico (intentionally being vague) he goes all "Rambo" on them.

In the prior Rambo film that took place in Burma, Stallone was going for the "highest body count ever in a film" and it was precisely for that reason that I thought that movie was dumb. In Last Blood, it isn't the amount of kills, but the variety in how the victims are dispatched that is so fun. If you can imagine a weapon, it was used and of course the famous bow and arrow scene has to be in there.

After the film's release - right on cue, the SJW's came out of the woodwork to attempt to ruin all the fun in the world. They accused Stallone of creating a stereotype of Mexicans as criminals. Critics were panning the film because of xenophobia and racism. I wasn't even going to go see the movie until this nonsense was in the news.

It's a movie you jagoffs! We are supposed to have the baddies be as despicable as possible - it wasn't a friggin documentary about the entire country of Mexico. They didn't have a problem with Vietnamese, Thai, Russian, or Burmese people being depicted in this way.

Sometimes I feel as though a lot of this social justice commentary actually gets put out there by the studios that made the film, so the controversy will create free advertising for the film.

This is honestly the only reason (well, that and the fact that mid-week films are $2.50) that I went to see this in a theater but man am I glad that i did. If you don't enjoy gratuitous violence and gruesome kill scenes this is definitely not the movie for you.

There are subtitles for the Spanish parts, but to be honest they kind of need subtitles for a lot of what Stallone says - that dude can't enunciate. I suppose it doesn't really matter because the story is pretty weak but i would say it is some of the best action I have seen in any of the Rambo films. I fully expected this to be a "meh" experience but if the opportunity arose to go see it again... i probably would.

Just for the people around my age, there is a "Rambo Montage" at the end of the film that will make you feel old... added bonus.

Synopsis John Rambo continues after the end of previous movie, with his father R. Rambo gone, and started life around horses in a ranch in Arizona. He has been living with Maria and his niece Gabriel and taking them as his own family. Gabriel then turn things around by deciding to go into Mexico, alone, looking for her father, despite Rambo saying no to it. Rambo than had to deal with the Mexican cartel to get back Gabriel.

Trumpian Rambo It is easy to say this film trying to show how Stallone goes full Trumpian by showing the need of a wall between the US and Mexico. Gabriel goes into Mexico, Rambo drove his truck in and out with injured Gabriel and the cartel come into Arizona in hordes with arms for revenge. There is one scene that Rambo literally drove through the wired border fence to get back into the US.

To me though its more about fatherly love. How Gabriel’s real father left her to be with another woman in Mexico. Little that she sees that Rambo has been giving her just what shes been looking for.

Just like how Starlord in Guardians of the Galaxy realized even though Ego is his real father, it is Yondu that gave him that fatherly love. In the recent Ad Astra, Brad Pitt failed to get it even after reconnecting with his father. In Suatu Ketika, Pak Ad came in Syukri’s vision to guide him up and beat the British boys (more on it next review).

John Rambo lost his father R.Rambo, and earlier his fatherly-figure, Colonel Samuel Trautman. He tries to be the best fatherly-figure to Gabriel by rescuing her but the curse seems to be falling into each and everyone he cares about since 1982 First Blood. His love and sacrifice for his country was for nothing as he couldn’t even get a meal coming back to the US after Vietnam.

The absence of wall between US and Mexico here to me is to show that love is borderless. And so does rage and the will to kill. Rambo takes a shot on the security in the US too by saying that the cops wont be able to help Gabriel. His fully armed underground tunnel shows the non-existance gun control in the US. His move to bait the cartel to Arizona by murdering their people in Mexico is akin to the US making enemies in other countries is an open invitation for an act of retaliation.

In 1982 First Blood is about the psychological impact of the Vietnam War, First Blood Part II is about how Prisoners Of War (POW) in Vietnam should not be abandoned. Rambo III shows the fighting spirit of the Mujaheedeens against the Russian invasion. So to say Stallone goes Trumpian on this one is abit of a contradiction. Where and how Stallone has grown from his first movie Rocky, I dont think of a reason why he need to go Trumpian.

In Rambo 4 though, John Rambo lost Colonel Trautman who have guided him all along since Vietnam and you see the change of character from a calculated mission oriented soldier to a rampaging mercenary. At the same time, Stallone (and Rambo) expresses rage against the Myanmar genocide.

In Last Blood, Rambo has again found peace like in the ranch and like in every other Rambo movie, something got in the way and ruined that peace he found. At the end he sits on a rocking chair on the porch (the American way ironically, the country that he came home to but never really got accepted) with his wound, accepting that it is his fate to live with blood always in his hand and he is indeed expandable.

Rambo has been around forever. This trailer seems to be setting up a tone that is more reminiscent of the original First Blood movie from 1982. If that is the case, I will be quite here for it. Other than that, I don’t know.
