  1. Bokutachi no Remake Ep.12 - Finale: The Remake Has Only Begun!@ahmadmanga1696d

[WARNING: HEAVY SPOILERS] The ending of Bokutachi no Remake anime was perfect for the direction the story was going toward. I've mostly enjoyed it, though the presentation had some unsatisfying issues. The ending left us with a lot of questions to be answered in the Light Novel/Manga and the second season, though chances of the latter happening are still slim.

    !bokutachinoremakefinale.png

This review is a follow-up to my reviews for episode 8 in which Kyouya's actions led to his friends giving up on their creative works, and episode 10 review in which Kyouya saw the future he created by messing up. Then realizes he can still fix what's left of his dream in this new world.

I didn't write a review for episode 11. It was's a beautiful episode. Kyouya helped save his company, but he feared that by taking the lead from Kawasegawa and helping her team, he made her want to leave too. She got angry hearing he thought of her that way!

Kawasegawa told him a great #self-help speech that deserves an article on its own! Kyouya learns that his mistake wasn't that he meddled in his friends' lives when he shouldn't have been there. It was that he hid his vulnerabilities from them.

He didn't seem to consider them equals. He smiled with them in happy times, but only cried alone in sad times. It naturally led to them thinking of him as an amazing person that doesn't need help, and they can't offer anything to help him. Kyouya learned how mistaken he was.

When he was finally alone. Keiko arrived!

    vlcsnap_2021_11_16_10h07m51s456.png

This final episode starts when Kyouya meets Keiko. He seems to know at this point that she can control time or something, but (unlike us the audience) he doesn't question it.

She asks if he wants to go back. She was surprised to know that he does. Kyouya of this timeline has a wife and a kid who love him. He's well respected in his company. This Kyouya is one of the happiest people alive! Yet, he's willing to throw all of that if, only if he shares his creative life with his "platinum generation trio."

"I didn't go back in time because I wanted to be happy. It wasn't about getting a nice girl or cheating to become a hero. I wanted to struggle... To be hurt! To lose hope... To be pushed to the edge. And with them... If I can go through it all with them... I'd take that over a happy future any day. I want to go back. I want to go back to the past, to be with everyone!" --- Kyouya

Yeah... That answers some of the questions we had as fandom. Why doesn't he use his knowledge from the future to avoid disasters? or win lotteries? Because he doesn't want to!! His only desire is to be with his friends and be able to help them and create things with them.

As a creative person myself. (As I'd like to imagine myself anyway,) I totally understand that desire. I wanted to be equal to some of my friends in art and writing, but I'm not as dedicated as Kyouya to the cause.

    vlcsnap_2021_11_16_10h08m56s777.png

Before going back to the past. Kyouya asks Keiko to give him time to bid his farewell to the people he cares about most in this timeline: His wife, and daughter.

As he goes back home one last time, Maki greets him saying she found out "Mommy is really good at art!" Aki tells him she played the game his company developed and got inspired to draw again. She wants to draw a lot from now on. These scenes were actually heartbreaking knowing what Kyouya had already decided to do. It'll make Maki fade from existence!

As Kyouya smiles, I can only think of what's going on in his head. Probably something like: "I'll make this happen again, in a better future." (Because I'll be angry if it's anything less than that!!)

I'm so conflicted about this finale, to be honest... It's hard to agree with Kyouya's decision of destroying this timeline, but in the same way, the story started by him doing the same thing to other families. I do love the message the story is trying to convey here. Kyouya isn't a savior, and his selfless side is actually selfish in a way. To fulfill his goal to work with the platinum trio!

    vlcsnap_2021_11_16_10h13m24s023.png

"Welcome back, protagonist. Hope you're ready for hell again!" -- Keiko

Kyouya goes back to the day Tsurayki dropped out of school. He wakes up to see Shinoaki and Nanako worried about him, and not knowing what to do with Tsurayuki's situation. He doesn't try to pursue his friend, instead, he thinks about the future, knowing he'll meet him again. "The Remake has just started!"

After a while, he started noticing the signs of Nanako and Shinoaki getting into a creative slump. He dealt with Nanako's dependence on him by pushing her to work alone, but didn't know what to do about Aki's lack of inspiration. That is, until he met a certain girl on a fateful day. The same girl he saved in the future timeline he abandoned: "Ayaka Minori."

    vlcsnap_2021_11_16_10h11m43s099.png

The season ends with Kyouya asking Kawasegawa if he's ever in a need of help, will she get out of her way to help him? She asks what's wrong with his head? But if he truly needed help, she might help him. Confirming what the future version of her said to him. He then goes to meet up with Tsurayuki and the final shot of the anime is when they encounter each other...

The season ends with the perfect "read the source material" bait. There's no reason to believe there would be a season 2 since this isn't a very popular anime. As far as I know, there isn't a translated version of the Light Novel for now, and the manga only started to catch up with the parts the anime adapted after it ended.

This is the final chance Kyouya has to redo his life, and I'm betting he'll make it with his friends and form a future even better than the happy one we witnessed the past three episodes!

    What do you think?

I started writing this after the episode aired, but it sat unfinished for more than a month until I decided I had to put it out there. I hope you enjoyed reading this review. I love this series, and even though I think the chances of getting a second season are slim, I like to think we'll get it.

  2. Bokutachi no Remake Ep.10 Just The Words I Wanted To Hear@ahmadmanga1756d

If you did the right thing, and it made things worse. Will you have the courage to try again?

[ WARNING: SPOILERS ] Episodes 8 and 9 of Bokutachi no Remake were hard to watch. As I explained in my previous post about this anime. Kyouya learned the horrible consequences of his actions in the most humbling way...

Episode 10 starts by him accepting he now lives in a world with no Platinum Trio. Kyouya vows to protect what's left of this world's creative future and his wife's happiness.

For most of the episode, Kyouya struggles with the fact that he messed things up by meddling with his friends lives. After a few month living in this new world, he gets used to his job at a game making company.

But the things in that company don't go very well... Their artist is having an art block, and their engine is full of bugs. The game's release will be terrible no matter what happens...

Kyouya's team isn't doing so bad, but when he tries to help the other team, he was told not to meddle. Kyouya's reaction hurts! Old Kyouya wouldn't have flinched by this and would've helped, but this Kyouya has just learned he destroyed his friends future by doing just that... Can you find the courage to try again if you're in his place? I can't...

As predicted, the game's release was terrible, and things went from worse to worst, when a fight happened in the game's company... "Kyouya, do something!" said his co-worker. To that, Kyouya lied: "It can't be helped, there's nothing we can do."

In a world with no Akishima Shino. In a world with no N@NA. In a world with no Kawagoe Kyoichi... A world that only existed because Kyouya wanted to help these three when no one asked him. What can he do? It can't be helped... Right..?

As Kyouya went back to his desk, he got an Email message... A notification for a new song posted online.

    The singer: N@NA!

After Nanako failed in romance with Kyouya 10 years ago. She gave up music as well. She only sang for him. After he's gone, she announced she'll stop posting songs online... She did, but here she is, opening her account again, singing from the world to hear.

*"Y'know, long time ago back in college. There was someone who told me to sing. That was what set me to the road of singing. Yeah... it's all his fault. It is all his fault. Yet, because of him, someone as unremarkable as me started singing! I found something I can be serious with. But I didn't keep at it...

I just relied at him and didn't work hard myself. The second he was gone I started slacking. I blamed it all on him and wanted to give up. But I... even if it's only me... I don't want to be the one who invalidates everything he did! Which is why I'm gonna sing again!" --- (N@NA) Nanako

I was very thrilled to hear this. Just the timing of her song, would've been amazing. But the exact wording was just what Kyouya needed to hear. When he slammed the table next. I knew exactly what Kyouya would say... What I needed to hear:

"We're gonna figure something out! Dammit!" --- Kyouya (30 years old)

After this scene, I know everything will be alright... The whole situation is relatable, because people in creative jobs do face these problems. Sometimes people in charge don't understand. Sometimes the scope is too big. But there's always a solution to a problem, even if it requires some meddling...

I don't know where the story will go from here, and the season is almost over. I'm a bit sad that this anime will end soon, and since it's a promotional type of anime, we might not get a second season.

I wish there was translations for the Light Novel, as my Japanese level isn't enough to understand the story right now. This story is so relatable to me as a content creator, and I really wish to consume more of it.

  3. [Bokutachi No Remake] The Anime Incorporated the Spin-off to the Main Story@ahmadmanga1820d

Bokutachi no Remake anime has a different beginning from its source material Light Novel and Manga. I said so in my previous two articles. I didn't know while writing them that the additional parts aren't anime-original. They're an adaptation of the Spin-off!

    BokuTachiNoRemake.jpg

Remake Our Life is originally a Light Novel which has 9 volumes at the time of writing. The franchise however has a Manga and a Spin-off Light Novel. Bokutachi no Remake Ver.β explores a what-if scenario in which the time travel doesn't happen.

The fandom calls this spin-off: Eiko Route since she's the romance sub-plot winner here. She doesn't win in the main story.

There are currently no English translations for the Spin-off, so I don't know how different it is from its anime adaptation, but one thing is for sure: Kyouya doesn't go back in time so he must've found a way to fix his present-time life along with Eiko.

In the original Light Novel and Manga, Kyouya doesn't get a job at Succeedsoft. Instead the manga shows his failure at his old company and trying to shake-off the debt collectors coming for his boss. (The anime makes a nod to that in the dream sequence.)

    BokuTachiNoRemake_2D.jpg

So Kyouya doesn't meet Eiko until he travels back in time in the original story. Any mention of her being his (ex-)boss is anime-only.

Focusing on Eiko Kasegawa in the beginning is an interesting anime choice. I wonder how knowing her in the future will change the story. I know that it'll change the audience perspective on things even if the plot itself doesn't change.

Looking at the direction of the first two episodes, I believe more nods to her future self will be made. While I don't know if this anime will become a hit, I'm sure it'll become a cult-hit and Best anime of Summer 2021 for many!

  4. [Bokutachi no Remake] Why I Believe Kyouya's First Run Wasn't a Failure?@ahmadmanga1828d

EDIT: There's some confusion in the article below as I wrote it not knowing about the Spin-off called Ver.β. ALPHA world in my article would be the world of the spin-off story/Beta. While BETA world would refer to the main story which is referred as Alpha by the fandom.

Bokutachi no Remake (Remake Our Life) follows the story of Hashiba Kyouya. After losing his job(s) and regretting not following his passion. He's sent back 10 years in time to the day he got accepted in art school. Kyouya decides to make most of his second chance using his 10 years of experience.

This is a follow up article to my First Impression/Review of the Anime.

    screenshot_20210707_070222_mx_player.jpg

Below I'm going to refer the timeline before the time travel as ALPHA World. The timeline he travels back to as BETA World.

Seeing Kyouya fail at his life career in the first half of the first episode is heartbreaking, because we know his pain! We see how hard working he is. He finally gets hired, (if temporarily,) at his dream company, only to lose the job three months later for reasons out of his control. It's unfair.

This anime is relatable to many because all of us have made a decision or two that decided our life path. Some of these become decisions we regret, and when we finally realize it, we can't go back and fix it.

It's not stated in the story, but I believe Kyouya took the easier path when he was young. That's why he regrets it. The same thing could've happened to him even if he went to the art school, but the fact he didn't follow his passion is what burns him. Not that he "failed."

That's why, when he goes back to his home, we see him at his lowest. Every one of us who are old enough had a moment like that. A moment when we feel everything is over. But make no mistake. People bounce back! Everyone of us got stronger because of it!

    screenshot_20210707_070422_mx_player.jpg

I argue that Hashiba Kyouya's ALPHA run wasn't a failure. At least, he still has the potential to make it big if the BETA run didn't happen.

He might have considered himself a lost cause, but he's was just dealing with unfair circumstances. It made him feel that it was his incompetence that led to all these failures, but when you look at him objectively, he's a real hard worker. He has experience with many sides of the creative production as he admits to his boss early in the first episode.

    screenshot_20210707_070517_mx_player.jpg

It's true that the second chance after going back in time will give him better life and chances of success. He probably wouldn't achieve his dream of working with the Platinum Trio otherwise. But what if he didn't go back?

I'm sure Kyouya would've gone back to work then do something amazing after a few months if he didn't go back in time. People like him don't stay depressed for long! He's competent, he just had a really bad luck. He's also only 28. The time period of your life in which everyone treats you like an adult but you still have the experience of a child.

Finally from my Manga reading, I know what he can accomplish. ALPHA timeline Kyouya would have realized his strength eventually, because he's the type who does anything to succeed. He only needs a person or two to believe in him as Eiko Kasegawa did in the anime version, (but her luck was as bad as his,) and he'll be set in the right direction again.

    What do you think?

Thanks for reading this. I thought it'll be fun to think about what will happen if the story of Bokutachi no Remake didn't happen to the protagonist, and the bright future I can see waiting for him even without it. Luckily we have the BETA world in the actual story & it's clearly more interesting than the reality the anime started with.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, because I certainly enjoyed writing it. Hope to see your comments & see you in another post.

  5. [Anime: First Impression] Bokutachi no Remake@ahmadmanga1830d

"Once time passes, it never comes back. There are no second chances in life."

    BokuTachiNoRemake (1).png

I first read Bokutachi no Remake (Remake Our Life) manga when I was browsing at random long time ago. The premise hooked me instantly. The story follows a guy who has a second chance in life after losing everything. He decides to pursue the future he really wanted this time around.

When I first read Bokutachi no Remake, there were only a few chapters translated to English. The Web Novel translations weren't out yet. But I was following it for a while since the first three chapters were really good. Eventually, with no updates I forgot about it.

I was surprised when I looked some names of this season's anime and found Bokutachi no Remake among them. I watched the first episode, which is 50 minutes long and I loved every second of it!

    Remake Our Life

Hashiba Kyouya is a 28 years old business man working for a game development company, that just got bankrupt. Going back to his hometown, he reminiscence about his life decisions.

Once, he was accepted to most esteemed art university in Japan, but he took the safer option with economics instead. His three favorite creators dubbed "the platinum generation" graduated from that art school. Kyouya always wondered if he'd have a place with them if he chose the art route.

Wishing for a second chance as he sleeps, Kyouya wakes up 10 years into the past. He decides to choose the path of creator in his second chance. Secretly hoping that he'll meet his favorite artists from the platinum generation. Spoiler: He would!

Kyouya's meets three other kids at his new dorm. There's Shinoaki the tiny girl who loves art. The mysterious Tsurayuki the guy who likes to make fun of others, and Nanako the hyper girl with blond hair dye. Each of them is interesting and has their strength and flaws.

The series is full of strong slice of life moments, for example: On their first day, the students professor announced that most of them will fail, using real life statistics to back her statement. "Out of 135 graduates last year only one 8 got jobs." I like how they got a huge reality check right there!

"Humans need food to eat and homes to live. But entertainment is low priority, it only becomes important once you've got your needs met. It's useless for survival. Going to art university knowing that means you're all stupid.

But, even with stupidity, when you have enough of it you can make money. If you're going to be stupid anyway, do it in a way no one can joke about!" -- The Professor.

When I heard the above quote, I was like: "Yes, this is a good anime."

After watching his fellow students work in school Kyouya realized. His 10 years in the entertainment industry didn't give him an advantage. They know more about art basics than him. But he does have something. He just doesn't know it at this point in the story.

    Impressions on the Anime

The anime & manga handled this beginning part differently. He was hired by the same company as the platinum generation in the anime but the project was frozen before he finalized his contract. In the manga he was working for a shady company that went bankrupt. Ending up jobless in both versions.

The scene where he meets his boss as an adult is new to me. Definitely not in the manga. Seeing the protagonist getting the chance to work in his dream company, working so hard as a temp-hire for it, makes his eventual downfall more heartbreaking. It also gives us the audience a chance to know Eiko Kasegawa earlier.

I think it's a good choice to have a 50-minutes first episode. It gave the animators enough time to bring out the good sides of three of the four main characters. Established Kyouya's hardworking traits. Tsurayuki's intelligence, and Shinoaki's airheaded-ness . Hopefully, Nanako will get a bigger focus in the next episode.

    What do you think?

What I like about this story compared to other second chance stories. (Even the Isekai ones.) The protagonist had a good mindset from the start. He was already a competent person in his first run, he just had a really bad luck. He worked in companies that fail outside of his control. The anime makes this even more obvious than the manga did.

So, when he goes back 10 years in the past, he's doing a lot of things better than his peers, but he also has a lot to learn as a creator. I like that about Hashiba Kyouya's character. I look forward to the adaptation of the first book ending in the anime. In my opinion, it's very powerful!
