   ¿Cualquier tiempo pasado fue mejor…? No creo que haya una sola respuesta. Afirmarlo o negarlo depende de varias cosas, de las condiciones que hayas vivido y de tu situación actual.

   Una persona mayor quizá sienta que hace veinte o treinta años podía hacer más cosas, nadar en el mar, escalar montañas, quizá comer cualquier alimento sin preocuparse de las consecuencias, ese tiempo seguramente fue mejor. En cambio, para un sobreviviente de una guerra quizá ese tiempo pasado sea lo peor que ha vivido y no quisiera bajo ninguna circunstancia volver a él.

   En ambos casos es en nuestra memoria humana donde reside esa capacidad de volver al pasado cualquier cantidad de veces.

   La directora Lisa Joy, una experimentada mujer de la TV, nos presenta en Reminiscence (2021), su primera película como guionista y directora, una exploración sobre la importancia de la memoria.

   La película está ubicada en un cercano presente distópico. Luego de un tiempo de guerra la ciudad de Miami ha quedado parcialmente sumergida bajo el mar. La mayoría viven chapoteando agua por todos lados y unos pocos en las zonas secas de la ciudad. Una situación que genera malestar y es fuente de conflictos.

   

   En la ciudad sumergida vive Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman) un ex militar que junto a su socia, Emily "Watts" (Thandiwe Newton), se ganan la vida reviviendo los recuerdos de la gente. En ocasiones también prestan sus servicios a la fiscalía para cualquier investigación donde hurgar en los recuerdos de los criminales permita resolver los casos.

   Para acceder a los recuerdos de sus clientes esta pareja de “amigos” utilizan una máquina que sobrevivió a los tiempos de la guerra, en esa época se usaba para sacar información contra la voluntad de los enemigos.

   Esta máquina, un tanque muy parecido a los que usaban en Minority Report (2002) para que los gemelos hicieran sus predicciones, es el único indicio de que estamos en el futuro. Todo lo demás tiene un aire bastante retro.

   Cierto día se presenta Mae (Rebecca Ferguson) con una urgencia. Solicita que la atiendan fuera de horario y se metan en su memoria porque ha perdido las llaves de su apartamento. Al verla Nick queda prendado de la mujer y a partir de ese momento solo puede pensar en ella. Se hacen amigos, pasan buenos ratos juntos y todo parece ser muy prometedor.

   Pero las cosas se complican cuando Mae desaparece misteriosamente. A partir de allí la película se convierte en un Thriller con unos giros interesantes. Pronto nos daremos cuenta que Mae no es quien dice ser, hay muchas cosas oscuras ligadas con su desaparición. Al final, vivir en los recuerdos será la posibilidad de ser feliz.

   La película tiene un montón de puntos a su favor. Uno de ellos es la voz en off de Nick, una clara referencia al cine “Noir”, esas películas de los años cincuenta donde casi siempre había un narrador que nos iba dejando caer claves para adentrarnos en la historia. Acá Nick hace lo mismo, nos va develando algunos aspectos de la trama y comenta sobre temas relacionados con la importancia de la memoria.

   

   Otro punto a favor es la ambientación. A mi modo de ver, muy bien lograda. De día podemos ver una ciudad de Miami parcialmente sumergida en la que las personas se comunican navegando en pequeños botes, algo parecido a los canales de Venecia. Las imágenes del tren viajando en rieles a ras del agua son memorables.

   De noche, que es cuando la ciudad cobra vida porque de día hace un calor insoportable, la atmósfera se parece mucho a Ciudad Gótica , también tiene cierto aire a Blade Runner, aunque a diferencia de esta última, acá no hay carros voladores ni nada ligado a una tecnología avanzada. Por ningún lado veremos computadoras, celulares de última generación ni nada por el estilo. Las personas se caen a tiros con las pistolas y revólveres de toda la vida. Los pocos carros que circulan por las calles parecen de mediados del siglo XX.

   La historia también es interesante, una combinación de elementos donde tenemos personajes corruptos, castigo a los malvivientes, gentes que guardan secretos oscuros, historias de amor truncadas, el viaje del héroe en todas sus facetas, problemas filosóficos de altura…

   Las actuaciones son más que meritorias. Hugh Jackman, nos deja una gran interpretación del tipo duro que debajo de su coraza guarda un corazón sensible que se quiebra ante la arremetida de la nostalgia. Rebecca Ferguson le da vida a una mujer que ha acumulado muchísimos errores, que ha vivido en los límites de la perversión, pero que al final encuentra la entereza suficiente para redimirse. Thandiwe Newton es la compañera dispuesta a jugarse la vida por Nick las veces que sea necesaria, en el fondo guarda cierta insatisfacción por haber mantenido durante muchos años una relación de socia con su “jefe”, cuando sus sentimientos le pedían ir a otra cosa más profunda. El reparto también está bastante bien.

   Sin embargo, este es uno de esos casos en que una buena combinación de elementos no es suficiente para producir una buena película.

   

   No les voy a decir que la película es mala. Me cuesta mucho llegar a esa conclusión cuando sé todo lo que está detrás para que podamos ver lo que se nos ofrece en pantalla. Pero tampoco les voy a mentir. Hay algo que no encaja. Quizá tiene un ritmo lento, quizá la voz en off distrae más de lo que orienta, quizá otra edición hubiese dado en el clavo…Uno como espectador siente que falta o sobra algo.

   La crítica sobre la película estuvo dividida, tuvo elogios y detractores. Pero la respuesta del público fue de indiferencia total, este film es uno de los mayores fracasos de taquilla de los últimos tiempos.

   Aún así, si no tienen otras opciones mucho mejores y si su tiempo no es tan limitado, yo les sugeriría que le dieran un chance.

   Creo que vale la pena ver la película por el problema de fondo que plantea, el peso que tiene la memoria en nuestra forma de encarar la realidad.

   En este aspecto la película no es completamente neutral. Muchas veces nos advierte sobre los riesgos que comporta acostumbrarse a vivir en la nostalgia, buscando rescatar recuerdos ya idos. De hecho, a muchos de los clientes que van con la intención de revivir recuerdos se les advierte sobre el riesgo de adicción. Es fácil querer permanecer en un pasado que fue lindo y gratificante.

   De existir esa máquina en este tiempo seguramente que Nick tendría muchos clientes.

   Deben ser muy pocos los que puedan afirmar que no han sentido la fuerza de la nostalgia. Apelar a los recuerdos puede ser un estímulo para seguir adelante, pero también puede abrir la puerta a una vida de ensoñación donde perdemos contactos con la realidad…

On the other hand, for a survivor of a war, perhaps that past time is the worst he has lived through and he would not want under any circumstances to go back to it. In both cases, it is in our human memory where the capacity to return to the past any number of times resides.

   In Reminiscence (2021), her first film as writer and director, director Lisa Joy, a seasoned TV personality, presents us with an exploration of the importance of memory.

   The film is set in a near dystopian present. After a time of war the city of Miami has been partially submerged under the sea. Most live splashing water everywhere and a few in the dry areas of the city. A situation that generates discomfort and is a source of conflict.

   But things get complicated when Mae mysteriously disappears. From there on the movie turns into a Thriller with some interesting twists and turns. Soon we will realize that Mae is not who she says she is, there are many dark things linked to her disappearance. In the end, living in memories will be the possibility to be happy.

   The film has a lot of points in its favor. One of them is Nick's voice-over, a clear reference to "Noir" cinema, those movies from the fifties where there was almost always a narrator who was dropping clues to get us into the story. Here Nick does the same, he reveals some aspects of the plot and comments on issues related to the importance of memory.

   Another point in favor is the setting. In my opinion, it is very well done. By day we can see a partially submerged city of Miami in which people communicate by navigating in small boats, something similar to the canals of Venice. The images of the train traveling on rails at water level are memorable.

   At night, which is when the city comes to life because during the day it is unbearably hot, the atmosphere is very similar to Gotham City, it also has a certain air of Blade Runner, although unlike the latter, here there are no flying cars or anything related to advanced technology. There are no computers, state-of-the-art cell phones or anything of the sort. People shoot each other with pistols and revolvers. The few cars on the streets look like they are from the middle of the 20th century.

   

   The story is also interesting, a combination of elements where we have corrupt characters, punishment for evildoers, people who keep dark secrets, love stories cut short, the hero's journey in all its facets, philosophical problems of height ...

   The performances are more than meritorious. Hugh Jackman, leaves us a great interpretation of the tough guy who under his armor keeps a sensitive heart that breaks before the onslaught of nostalgia. Rebecca Ferguson gives life to a woman who has accumulated many mistakes, who has lived on the limits of perversion, but in the end finds the strength to redeem herself. Thandiwe Newton is the partner willing to put her life on the line for Nick as many times as necessary, deep down she keeps a certain dissatisfaction for having maintained for many years a partner relationship with her "boss", when her feelings were asking her to go to something deeper. The cast is also quite good.

   However, this is one of those cases where a good combination of elements is not enough to produce a good movie.

   I'm not going to tell you that the movie is bad. I have a hard time coming to that conclusion when I know everything that is behind it so that we can see what's being offers us on screen. But I'm not going to lie to you either. There is something wrong with the film. Maybe it has a slow pace, maybe the voice-over is more distracting than it should be, maybe a different editing would have hit the nail on the head... As a viewer, one feels that something is missing or missing.

Esas preguntas surgieron tras observar la película Reminiscencia. En la primera parte, vinieron a mi mente varios títulos de ciencia ficción que trabajan el mismo tema: la obsesión por el pasado, los recuerdos y los sueños, por ejemplo Blade Runner, Origen, Olvídate de mí o Memento. Esta cinta intenta matizar rasgos de originalidad que no son suficientes para capturar la atención de los espectadores durante todo el metraje. En lo particular me pareció atrayente en la primera parte, pero ese encanto se desvaneció muy pronto por su ritmo errático.

   El argumento va de la siguiente manera: Nos situamos en un futuro distópico, aquí el nivel del mar ha subido y anega la ciudad de Miami, por tanto, las barcazas son el principal medio de transporte. La vida se ha vuelto nocturna, escenario ideal para que el crimen y la violencia se consoliden como dos banderas representativas y desencadenen en miseria y destrucción. La ambientación me parece un acierto, los elementos utilizados de la realidad y del universo futurista son fascinantes a la vista. En general, el mundo donde se desarrolla la película está bien construido. Este escenario está acompañado de la fotografía bien ejecutada de Paul Cameron que resalta los contraluces y la belleza externa. En esta oportunidad, desde mi perspectiva, la banda sonora a cargo de Ramin Djawadi no calza con las escenas presentadas.

   La voz en off del protagonista es un recurso que se aprovecha al máximo, sirve como un instrumento descriptivo, nos suministra información sobre lo que ha sucedido en la ciudad y sobre el funcionamiento de la misma. Las reflexiones filosóficas abundan sobre la dependencia de la memoria, en ocasiones, se vuelven incisivas y puede que te hagan pensar más de la cuenta, perdiendo así el hilo narrativo. Aunado a ello, están los múltiples diálogos, se nota que hay un gran esfuerzo en ellos, sin embargo, algunos son incongruentes.

   La cinta plantea la dicotomía: vivir anclado a los recuerdos del ayer o continuar con las distintas experiencias para crear nuevos. Hay muchas personas que sienten adicción por el pasado, por momentos y personas ausentes, entonces prefieren habitar en él, apelando a los anhelos nostálgicos. Si bien es cierto que es difícil superar los traumas, puesto que las remembranzas nos irrumpen, en la película se enfocan en los instantes placenteros, si nuestra mente fuera selectiva y pudiéramos controlar esto, nos enfiláramos hacia la felicidad, pero la realidad dista mucho de esta posibilidad.

This setting is accompanied by Paul Cameron's well-executed photography that highlights backlighting and external beauty. On this occasion, from my perspective, the soundtrack by Ramin Djawadi does not fit with the scenes presented.

   The protagonist's voiceover is a resource that is used to the maximum, it serves as a descriptive instrument, it provides us with information about what has happened in the city and how it works. Philosophical reflections abound on the dependence on memory, sometimes they become incisive and may make you think more than necessary, thus losing the narrative thread. In addition to this, there are multiple dialogues, it shows that there is a great effort in them, however, some are incongruous.

   The film raises the dichotomy: live anchored to the memories of yesterday or continue with the different experiences to create new ones. There are many people who are addicted to the past, at times and absent people, so they prefer to dwell in it, appealing to nostalgic yearnings. Although it is true that it is difficult to overcome the traumas, since the remembrances break us, in the film they focus on the pleasant moments, if our mind were selective and we could control this, we would head towards happiness, but the reality is far from This possibility.

Sin embargo, la sociedad reproduce la injustica y la impunidad, vicios del pasado que se tornan latentes en el estrato donde se habita. De allí que la máquina de Jackman sea vital para atrapar a los bandidos.

   Reminiscencia posee un argumento que ya está manoseado, pero matiza rasgos distintivos, sobre todo, cómo se trata el misterio, aunque el potencial que se le veía al largometraje está desaprovechado; se manejan temas intrigantes que se sienten inconclusos. En ocasiones, es un tanto confusa, ya que la trama se complica innecesariamente, hay que develar el entramado que resulta forzado y con varios recovecos. El cambio de ritmo la torna un poco lenta, además posee contadas escenas de acción.    The film plays with lies and secrets, which end in tragedy. It is that falsehood cannot bring anything favorable. Doing the right thing is tattooed as a strong premise, at least on Mae's skin. The detective capacity of the protagonist is a capital characteristic for the development of the plot.

   We can also distinguish the sociopolitical background as an analogy of the current world. Social structures, architecture and customs have been transformed by various events, especially the consequences of climate change and technological advances. However, society reproduces injustice and impunity, vices of the past that become latent in the stratum where it lives. Hence, Jackman's machine is vital to catch the bandits.

   Reminiscence has a plot that is already hackneyed, but it nuances distinctive features, above all, how the mystery is treated, although the potential that was seen in the feature film is wasted; Intriguing themes that feel unfinished are handled. Sometimes, it is a bit confusing, since the plot is unnecessarily complicated, you have to reveal the framework that is forced and with several twists and turns. The change of pace makes it a bit slow, it also has few action scenes. The functional basis is nostalgia and memories, which strikes the most sensitive chord in the audience, however, it does not crystallize in the expected way. In short, I found it tedious at times, the forceful start soon evaporated in my hands, leaving a bittersweet taste.

   Scifi has always been one of my favorites genres so every time I realize a new promising scifi production has been released I usually consider giving it a watch. It isn't hard to see what I was interested in this film because only by taking a look at the poster I am sure most people will recognize a couple of well-known people from the acting world.
   
   

   One of the things I find very enjoyable about scifi is that it can provide us with certain situations that could be similar to what is expecting for us in the future. I do believe scifi is, for the most part, not an unrealistic fantasy, but rather technology that will one day become real.
   
   

   If you think about it, right now we already have technology that would have been considered unbelievable and even like magic by people from decades and centuries in the past. Since it is a fact that technology advances exponentially, and you could confirm this yourself by looking at the rate of improvement of the different generations of processors, then in the years to come, technology will only become more and more mind-blowing until we reach a possible and theorized event called the "technological singularity".
   
   

   Given the fact I find all of this fascinating, the popular Netflix series called Black Mirror became my favorite years ago. It provides in each episode a believable drama based on technology from the future and how it could affect the life of the people in both good and bad ways.
   
   

   Anyways, back to Reminiscence, this film is a mix of scifi, drama, and crime with a little bit of mystery squeezed in there. It wasn't really mind-blowing and some of the "twist" was easy to expect but as I will explain below, I don't consider this film a bad production.

   What was the movie about?

   The story is about Jackman's character investigating to figure out what happened to his loved one. He had a girlfriend who suddenly disappeared and he wants to know why. The scifi that's explored in this film isn't entirely original but can still be considered entertaining for fans of the genre. It consists of exploring the memories of the person and displaying them like it was a movie in some type of hologram projector.
   
   

   Jackman's character owns equipment that can recreate people's memories. This is his business and people usually go there to relive happy memories. That's how he earns a living and he can also sometimes help the police in solving crimes.
   
   

   A very similar scifi idea has been explored in other scifi productions, and I have to mention Black Mirror again. There are 2 episodes related to this type of scifi, one called "The Entire History of You" and another one called "Crocodile" which is the one more similar to the scifi in Reminiscence.

   La ciencia ficción siempre ha sido uno de mis géneros favoritos, por lo que cada vez que me doy cuenta de que se ha lanzado una nueva producción de ciencia ficción prometedora, generalmente considero darle un vistazo. No es difícil ver lo que me interesó en esta película porque solo con mirar el póster estoy seguro de que la mayoría de la gente reconocerá a un par de personas conocidas del mundo de la actuación.
   
   

   Una de las cosas que me gusta mucho de la ciencia ficción es que puede proporcionarnos determinadas situaciones que podrían ser similares a las que nos espera en el futuro. Creo que la ciencia ficción no es, en su mayor parte, una fantasía poco realista, sino una tecnología que algún día se hará realidad.
   
   

   Si lo piensas bien, ahora mismo ya tenemos tecnología que habría sido considerada increíble e incluso mágica por personas de décadas y siglos en el pasado. Dado que es un hecho que la tecnología avanza exponencialmente, y cualquiera podría confirmarlo observando la tasa de mejora de las diferentes generaciones de procesadores, en los próximos años, la tecnología solo será cada vez más alucinante hasta que alcancemos un evento posible y teorizado llamado la "singularidad tecnológica".
   
   

   Dado que encuentro todo esto fascinante, la popular serie de Netflix llamada Black Mirror se convirtió en mi favorita hace años. Proporciona en cada episodio un drama creíble basado en tecnología del futuro y cómo podría afectar la vida de las personas tanto de formas buenas como malas.
   
   

   De todos modos, volviendo a Reminiscence, esta película es una mezcla de ciencia ficción, drama y crimen con un poco de misterio. No fue realmente alucinante y algunos de los "giros" fueron fáciles de redecir, pero como explicaré a continuación, no considero que esta película sea una mala producción.

   ¿De qué trataba la película?

   La historia trata sobre el personaje de Jackman que investiga para averiguar qué le sucedió a su ser querido. Tenía una novia que desapareció repentinamente y quiere saber por qué. La ciencia ficción que se explora en esta película no es del todo original, pero aún puede considerarse entretenida para los fanáticos del género. Consiste en explorar los recuerdos de la persona y mostrarlos como si fuera una película en algún tipo de proyector de hologramas.

   In both cases, I believe the way the scifi was displayed in a more appropriate way compared to Reminiscence, mainly because in Reminiscence the memories are viewed from a third-person perspective, and generating that point of view shouldn't be possible. Recreating the memories from the POV of the person would be fine, but from a different POV should be almost impossible.
   
   

   The story is set in America, mainly in Miami which actually looks like Venice due to drastic climate change that has caused the ocean levels to rise. This change allowed the film to have some nice views to look at and also made it very clear this is a changed world, very different from ours.
   
   

   Memories are extremely valuable and in today's society, a memory isn't something that can be transferred like a computer file. However, in Reminiscence's world, memories can be recorded and saved, and some of them might possess very valuable information for third parties.
   
   

   The crime part of the story is told in a messy way but it is basically about a person with a lot of resources, hiring some bad guys to neutralize a couple of innocent individuals because they could be considered a threat to his privileged position. In order to achieve this, some memory files were used and that's how Jackman's character gets involved in all of this craziness.
   
   

   His main goal was just to discover what happened to the woman he loved, but his investigation turned obsession will allow him to discover what was really happening in the great scheme of things.
   
   

   This type of film will naturally have some twists but none of them were too surprising to be honest. Something I really like was a great decision taken by the character played by Rebecca Ferguson during a moment of extremely high danger. She decides, in a very creative way, to send a message that could only be possible with the use of the technology that reads memories. That part of the film was very cool and showed a lot of originality from the writer.
   
   

   The story has some tragedy in it, some action scenes, and in the end, it was an acceptable watch but it is certainly not a must-watch film. It is just a cool option to take into account for scifi fans.

   Main names associated with the film

   The director and writer of this film was Lisa Joy, who is known for being one of the writers of the popular HBO series called Westworld and she also directed 1 episode of that show. She hasn't participated in many productions but she mainly specializes in productions from the scifi genre. She is also working in the Fallout series which is yet to be released and is based on the popular videogame saga of the same name. So far, Westworld has been her best job.

Para lograr esto, se utilizaron algunos archivos de memoria y así es como el personaje de Jackman se involucra en toda esta locura.
   
   

   Su principal objetivo era simplemente descubrir qué le sucedió a la mujer que amaba, pero su investigación convertida en obsesión le permitirá descubrir lo que realmente estaba sucediendo a una escala mayor.
   
   

   Este tipo de película, naturalmente, tendrá algunos giros, pero ninguno de ellos fue demasiado sorprendente para ser honesto. Algo que me gustó mucho fue la gran decisión que tomó el personaje interpretado por Rebecca Ferguson en un momento de altísimo peligro. Decide, de una forma muy creativa, enviar un mensaje que solo podría ser posible con el uso de la tecnología que lee recuerdos. Esa parte de la película fue muy buena y mostró mucha originalidad por parte de la escritora.
   
   

   La historia tiene algo de tragedia, algunas escenas de acción y, al final, fue un experiencia aceptable, pero ciertamente no es una película "must-watch". Es una buena opción a tener en cuenta para los fanáticos de la ciencia ficción.

Besides those films, he has also worked in Les Misérables, Prisoners, The Fountain, and many more productions. In Reminiscence, he plays the guy who owns the machinery that can play the memories of the people, and he will use that machine to try to figure out what happened with his loved one.
   
   

   Thandiwe Newton plays a very important character, she is the colleague of the main character and works with the same machinery that plays the memories. This actress also played one of the main characters in Westworld and has also worked in many other productions such as the series Line of Duty, ER, and many others.
   
   

   Rebecca Ferguson plays the loved one of Jackman's character. This is a mysterious woman with some secrets and hidden intentions. This actress has also participated in a lot of great productions such as Doctor Sleep, the Mission Impossible movies, Life, among other ones.

   How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?

   Hugh Jackman is definitely better for action stories rather than stories with drama. I wasn't entirely convinced of his performance during a dramatic moment but this didn't ruin the movie it was just that the performance during that moment could have been better.
   
   

   Something similar could be said about a fighting scene involving a few bad guys and the characters played by Thandiwe Newton and Jackman. The good guys obviously win, but the bad guys were so incompetent that it was really hard to believe how that fight ensued. Something similar happened when Jackman's character was fighting against Curtis's character. It is clear that the fighting choreography in this film could have been improved.
   
   

   The scenery was enjoyable, I liked the futuristic look of the city and how everything looked like Venice due to changes in the climate. It provided the film with several settings that were nice to look at.

   Final thoughts

   Reminiscence is an acceptable film but it does have several areas where it could have improved. The type of scifi it explores is intriguing and gives room to all sorts of stories but the use of the third person POV was a hard to understand. It could be argued they use some type of AI to recreate the memories from the first-person POV to a third-person POV but why would they do this when the first-person POV is just as useful?
   
   

   I believe this film can be enjoyable especially to fans of the scifi genre and even though there are better scifi productions out there, I don't think Reminiscence deserves to be completely ignored.

   Reminiscence es una película aceptable, pero tiene varias áreas en las que podría haber mejorado. El tipo de ciencia ficción que explora es intrigante y da lugar a todo tipo de historias, pero el uso del punto de vista en tercera persona fue difícil de entender. Se podría argumentar que usan algún tipo de IA para recrear los recuerdos desde el punto de vista en primera persona hasta un punto de vista en tercera persona, pero ¿por qué harían esto cuando el punto de vista en primera persona es igual de útil?
   
   

   Creo que esta película puede ser disfrutada especialmente para los fanáticos del género de ciencia ficción y, aunque hay mejores producciones de ciencia ficción, no creo que Reminiscence merezca ser ignorada por completo.
