Hello everyone, fellow anime fans, I hope you're all doing great. This time, I want to share a new review of a series that had me like this the entire time, covering my face from pure secondhand embarrassment. I seriously have to tell you about this experience... I'm talking about Rent-a-Girlfriend. And look, let me tell you something: I know that sometimes we make bad decisions, okay? But I swear, I will never, ever be so desperate as to rent a girlfriend, introduce her to my entire family and my buddies, and then have an existential crisis over my ex, only to end up stalking the girl I rented. I mean, folks, that's a whole other level of pathetic, and that, that's what this glorious train wreck of an anime is all about. Seriously, they should have just called it "OnlyFans: The Anime" and it would have been much clearer, right? The thing starts with our protagonist, Kazuya Kinoshita, whose girlfriend dumps him after a month... one month.

And what does this... this child in an adult's body do? The most logical thing in the world, obviously: he blows all the money his dad probably gave him for college on an app to rent girlfriends, just to "feel something." That's where he gets Chizuru Mizuhara, who, let's see, is perfect in every way you look at her. She's beautiful, she's a sweetheart, and she plays her ideal girlfriend role to perfection... but Kazuya, our genius, gets mad... he gets mad because she was faking it! I mean, hello? It's her job! A job that you, champ, are paying her for! It's like getting angry because the real-life Chris Hemsworth isn't Thor. It makes no sense! So, what does he do? He gives her a bad rating on the app and, of course, rents her again... just to complain to her face! That, THAT is the level of intelligence our protagonist is working with, people.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos del anime, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión, les quiero compartir una nueva reseña de una serie que me tuvo todo el tiempo así, tapándome la cara de la pura pena ajena, y es que de verdad, tengo que contarles sobre esta experiencia.. estoy hablando de Rent-a-Girlfriend. Y miren, déjenme decirles algo: yo sé que a veces uno toma malas decisiones, ¿ok? Pero les juro, jamás en la vida voy a estar tan, pero tan desesperado como para alquilarme una novia, presentársela a toda mi familia y a mis panas, y después entrar en una crisis existencial por mi ex para terminar acosando a la chica que alquilé.. o sea, eso, gente, ya es otro nivel de patético, y de eso, de eso se trata este desastre glorioso de anime. De verdad, le hubieran puesto “OnlyFans: El Anime” y quedaba mucho más claro, ¿no? La cosa empieza con nuestro prota, Kazuya Kinoshita, a quien la novia lo deja después de un mes.. un mes.
Y qué hace este... este niño en cuerpo de adulto? Pues lo más lógico del mundo, obvio: se gasta toda la plata que seguro su papá le dio para la U en una app para alquilar novias, solo para “sentir algo”. Ahí le toca Chizuru Mizuhara, que, a ver, es perfecta por donde la mires, es guapa, es un amor y hace su papel de novia ideal a la perfección.. pero Kazuya, nuestro genio, se enoja... ¡se enoja porque ella estaba fingiendo! O sea, ¿hola? ¡Es su trabajo! ¡Un trabajo por el que tú, campeón, le estás pagando! Es como si te enojaras porque Chris Hemsworth en la vida real no es Thor. ¡No tiene ningún sentido! Así que, ¿qué hace? Le pone una mala calificación en la app y, obvio, la vuelve a alquilar... ¡solo para reclamarle en su cara! Ese, ESE es el nivel de inteligencia que maneja nuestro protagonista, gente.

And this, folks, is where the most powerful and unstoppable force in all of anime comes into play: plot convenience. Here, it's not just a little help; it's practically another character! On their second "date," boom, Kazuya's grandmother faints... they rush to the hospital, and he, in a panic, introduces Chizuru as if she were his real girlfriend. Oh, and what do you know? Chizuru's grandmother is in the same damn hospital! And guess what else? Their grandmothers are lifelong best friends! So now both families are in on the same lie... but wait, it gets better. It turns out they also go to the same university... I mean, the only thing that would make this more ridiculous is if they were neighbors and... oh, wait, they are! They're next-door neighbors! Everything that happens is designed to force them together in the most contrived and stupid way possible. You want to go to the beach with your buddies to forget about everything? Guess who else is there? Your ex. Everything happens just like that, "coincidentally," and you're left staring at the screen thinking, "Hold on, this entire season's mess could be fixed with one single, simple step: telling the truth!"

But noooo, that would be too easy. Now, let's talk about the man of the hour, Kazuya. And look, I'll be honest with you: I hate him... I really do. He's a loser in every sense of the word. His entire character is based on being a pervert and thinking solely with the part of his body that isn't his brain. I know that protagonists are often created for us to project ourselves onto, and look, the anime community might be needy, but I don't think we're desperate enough to stalk a girl and convince ourselves it's for "the greater good." This guy should have so much post-nut clarity that he'd have ascended to another existential plane by now, and yet, he's incapable of making a single correct decision. Half the time I was watching the series, I swear I was yelling at the screen, begging him not to be an idiot for once... but then... something weird happens. Amidst all that secondhand embarrassment, there are moments, tiny little moments, where he almost seems like a decent human being.

Out of nowhere, he'll do something genuinely kind or defend Chizuru in a way that surprises you. In those moments, you see what the series is trying to do. He feels frustratingly human, because let's be honest, we've all made stupid decisions—maybe not this stupid, but we've all been carried away by our emotions. And in the end, you keep watching the series because you're hooked on the story of this complete disaster, and you want, you really want to see him finally get his life together and become someone worthy of a girl like Chizuru. It's not that the anime is good, mind you; it's that it's so bad, it becomes incredibly entertaining. It's like watching a car crash in slow motion: you just can't look away.

Y acá, gente, es donde entra en juego la fuerza más poderosa e imparable de todo el anime: el guionazo, es que aquí no es solo una ayudita, ¡es prácticamente un personaje más! En su segunda "cita", ¡pum!, la abuela de Kazuya se desmaya.. corren al hospital y él, en medio del pánico, le presenta a Chizuru como si fuera su novia de verdad. Ah, ¿y qué creen? ¡La abuela de Chizuru está en el mismo bendito hospital! Y, ¿adivinen qué más? ¡Sus abuelas son mejores amigas de toda la vida! Así que ahora las dos familias están metidas en el mismo cuento.. pero esperen, que se pone mejor. Resulta que también van a la misma universidad.. o sea, lo único que haría esto más ridículo es que fueran vecinos y... ah, no, esperen, Lo son! ¡Son vecinos de al lado! Cada cosa que pasa está diseñada para forzarlos a estar juntos de la manera más rebuscada y estúpida posible. ¿Quieres ir a la playa con tus panas para olvidarte de todo? ¿Adivina quién más está ahí? Tu ex, todo pasa así, “casualmente”, y tú te quedas viendo la pantalla pensando: "A ver, todo este desmadre de una temporada completa se podría arreglar con un solo y simple paso: ¡decir la verdad!".
Pero noooo, eso sería muy fácil, ahora, hablemos del hombre del momento, Kazuya. Y miren, les voy a ser sincero: lo detesto.. de verdad que sí, es un perdedor con todas sus letras. Todo su personaje se basa en ser un salido y pensar únicamente con la parte de su cuerpo que no es el cerebro.. yo sé que muchas veces los protas están hechos para que uno se proyecte en ellos, y miren, la comunidad del anime podrá estar muy necesitada, pero no creo que estemos tan desesperados como para acosar a una chica y convencernos a nosotros mismos de que es por “un bien mayor”. Este tipo debería tener tanta claridad post-paja que ya habría ascendido a otro plano existencial, y sin embargo, es incapaz de tomar una sola decisión correcta. La mitad del tiempo que estuve viendo la serie, les juro que le estaba gritando a la pantalla, suplicándole que no fuera un imbécil por una vez.. pero entonces… pasa algo raro, en medio de toda esa vergüenza ajena, hay momentos, así, chiquititos, en los que casi parece un ser humano decente.
De la nada hace algo genuinamente amable o defiende a Chizuru de una manera que te sorprende.. en esos momentos, ves lo que la serie está intentando hacer. Se siente frustrantemente humano, porque seamos honestos, todos hemos tomado decisiones estúpidas, quizás no así de estúpidas, pero todos nos hemos dejado llevar por las emociones. Y al final, terminas viendo la serie porque estás enganchado a la historia de este completo desastre, y quieres, de verdad quieres ver que por fin ordene su vida y se convierta en alguien digno de una chica como Chizuru.. no es que el anime sea bueno, eh; es que es tan malo, que se vuelve increíblemente entretenido.. es como ver un accidente de auto en cámara lenta: simplemente no puedes dejar de mirar.

Now, let's talk about the girls, because deep down, this is a harem, let's be clear. First, there's Chizuru. She's a girl with incredible determination who works her butt off for her dreams, and honestly, you have to respect her just for putting up with Kazuya. She basically has three modes: professional girlfriend mode, a tsundere mode that leaves you cold, and quiet college girl mode, the nerdy type with the classic Clark Kent glasses that, for some reason, make her unrecognizable. She's a great character, but my only complaint, and it's a big one, is that we barely see what the hell is going on inside her head. The series is so focused on the disaster that is Kazuya that her feelings and growth feel like an afterthought, only really appearing near the end. Then we have Mami-chan, the ex.

And folks, let me tell you, I don't think the anime community has ever been so united. We've spent years arguing about whether One Piece is better than Naruto, or if Saitama could beat Goku... but with Mami, people, with Mami we achieved world peace. We all held hands and said in one voice: Mami is trash... just like that. She's the villain of the story, a force of chaos, manipulative, who seems to exist only to screw up everyone's life. You can go into the comments of an episode where she doesn't even appear, and I swear the most liked comment will be one shitting on her. That brings me to my personal choice, and I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but my best girl is Ruka Sarashina. Look, hear me out! Yes, she's intense and a bit of a stalker, okay? But Ruka has something that no one else in this series seems to have: she tells the truth!

She knows what she wants—Kazuya, for some reason I can't comprehend—and she goes for it. She doesn't hide her feelings or play stupid games; she's honest, she's direct. After watching Kazuya hesitate and lie for ten straight episodes, having someone so upfront is like a breath of fresh air. Plus, she has a backstory that makes you empathize with her, and honestly, she deserved so much better than to be trapped in Kazuya's whirlwind of indecision. I mean, the guy has an incredible girl who actually likes him, right there, in his face, and he's still obsessed with paying a fake one? Someone, please explain it to me.

Ahora, hablemos de las chicas, porque en el fondo, esto es un harén, seamos claros.. primero, está Chizuru.. es una tipa con una determinación increíble, que se saca la madre trabajando por sus sueños, y de verdad, tienes que respetarla solo por aguantarse a Kazuya. Básicamente tiene como tres modos: el modo novia profesional, un modo tsundere que te deja frío, y el modo chica tranquila de la U, la nerdita con los típicos lentes de Clark Kent que, por alguna razón, hacen que nadie la reconozca.. es un personaje genial, pero mi única queja, y es una queja grande, es que casi no vemos qué carajos le pasa a ella por dentro. La serie está tan enfocada en el desastre que es Kazuya que los sentimientos de ella y su crecimiento se sienten como algo secundario, que solo aparece de verdad casi al final.. luego tenemos a Mami-chan, la ex.
Y gente, déjenme decirles, creo que nunca en la vida la comunidad del anime había estado tan unida, llevamos años peleando que si One Piece es mejor que Naruto, o que si Saitama le gana a Goku.. pero con Mami, gente, con Mami alcanzamos la paz mundial. Todos nos agarramos de las manos y dijimos con una sola voz: Mami es una basura.. así, sin más. Es la villana de la historia, una fuerza del caos, manipuladora, que parece que solo existe para joderle la vida a todo el mundo, te puedes meter a los comentarios de un capítulo donde ella ni siquiera sale, y te juro que el comentario con más likes va a ser uno tirándole mierda.. eso me lleva a mi elección personal, y sé que me van a funar por esto, pero mi best girl es Ruka Sarashina. A ver, ¡escúchenme! Sí, es intensa y medio acosadora, ¿ok? ¡Pero Ruka tiene algo que nadie más en esta serie parece tener: dice la verdad!
Ella sabe lo que quiere —a Kazuya, por alguna razón que no logro comprender— y va por ello.. no anda escondiendo lo que siente ni con jueguitos estúpidos, es honesta, es directa.. después de ver a Kazuya dudar y mentir por diez capítulos seguidos, que llegue alguien tan frontal es como un respiro, un aire fresco. Además, tiene una historia detrás que te hace empatizar con ella y honestamente, merecía algo mucho mejor que quedar atrapada en el remolino de indecisión de Kazuya. O sea, el tipo tiene a una chica increíble, que de verdad gusta de él, ahí mismo, en su cara, ¿y él sigue obsesionado con pagarle a una de mentira? Que alguien me lo explique, por favor.

Okay, visually, you have to give it credit. The animation is super clean, the colors are really vibrant, and the character designs, damn, they're really good, honestly. You can tell they put effort and money into the production. And even though the story makes you want to pull your hair out, at least it looks pretty while you suffer. Oh, and the opening is a banger, but, be warned, I have to tell you something... for a romantic comedy, the anime is... way too horny, and unnecessarily so, in my opinion. They lean so heavily on Kazuya being a loser and a pervert that it gets really uncomfortable at times. I mean, yeah, we get that the guy doesn't think with his upper head, but we really didn't need to see super graphic scenes of him, you know, doing his thing... as they say. It felt like it wanted to be an ecchi anime without fully committing, and it came off as super forced and totally unnecessary for the story. So, in summary: Is Rent-a-Girlfriend a masterpiece?

Not at all! Is it something new, revolutionary? Not a chance! But, is it entertaining? It can be. It's one of those series you watch for the sheer drama, for the rage it induces, and for those very, very few moments when a character finally seems to mature. It's a disaster, but a disaster that, somehow, you can't stop watching. I give it a solid 5.5/10. I'm docking points for the protagonist who drives you crazy and the sometimes cringey fanservice, but it earns them back for how good it looks and the drama that hooks you. If you want relationship drama with a touch of comedy and can handle, and I mean really handle, secondhand embarrassment, give it a shot. Just be prepared to yell at the screen. A ver, en lo visual, hay que darle sus méritos, la animación está súper limpia, los colores son bien vivos y los diseños de los personajes, uff, están buenísimos, la verdad.. se nota que le metieron ganas, que le metieron plata a la producción. Y aunque la historia te dé ganas de arrancarte los pelos, por lo menos se ve bonito mientras sufres.. ah, y el opening es un temazo, pero, ojo, tengo que advertirles algo.. para ser una comedia romántica, el anime es… demasiado calenturiento, y de forma innecesaria, para mí. Se cuelgan tanto de que Kazuya es un perdedor y un pajero que a veces se pone bien incómodo.. o sea, sí, ya entendimos que el tipo no piensa con la cabeza de arriba, ¡pero de verdad no hacía falta ver escenas súper gráficas de él, ya saben, como decían por ahí!.. se sintió como que quería ser un anime ecchi pero sin atreverse del todo, y quedó súper forzado y totalmente innecesario para la historia.. entonces, en resumen: ¿Rent-a-Girlfriend es una obra maestra?
Para nada! ¿Es algo nuevo, revolucionario? ¡Ni de chiste! Pero, ¿es entretenida ? Puede ser. Es de esas series que ves por el puro chisme, por la rabia que te da, y por esos poquitos, poquitos momentos en que un personaje por fin parece madurar.. es un desastre, pero un desastre que, de alguna forma, no puedes dejar de ver.. yo le pongo un 5.5/10, bien sólido. Le bajo puntos por el prota que te saca canas verdes y el fanservice que a veces da cringe, pero los recupera por lo bien que se ve, por el chismecito que te engancha.. si quieren drama de parejas con toques de comedia y aguantan bien, pero bien, la pena ajena, denle una oportunidad.. eso sí, prepárense para gritarle a la pantalla.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
