***The first Christmas without Minato was heartbreaking for Hinako. Sometimes, she wished she just held onto him, so even if he’s gone, she could still be with him in the water. However, Minato had to sacrifice himself again… but the last time was for her and Minato’s sister’s sake.
She sobbed her heart out as she listened to the reserved Christmas greeting Minato left for her. She reminisced their memories together both when Minato was alive and when he was one with the water. But among those memories, there’s something that she wanted to re-live the most.
The next day, she took out her surf board and a bag of goods and headed to the ocean. She rode the waves with the intention of facing life head-on but with Minato’s memories tagging along with her. After riding some waves, she relaxed on the shore.
Taking out the stuff from her bag, she took some coffee beans she initially roasted… ground them with utmost care. Placed the ground coffee on a filter and slowly added water in a circling motion… letting the first batch subside and drip into the cup before adding more in the same motion.***

***It’s the familiar aroma she smelt the day Minato made the same coffee for her. It was mixed with the slight salty smell of the sea breeze which blended into a refreshing fragrance. She looked at the horizon and listened to the comforting sound of the waves before taking a sip of the coffee.
    …and CUT!!!! Good take!***

***That was the commercial Hinako and her friends shot for the coffee shop she’s about to open. Minato may no longer be with her, but his dream of owning a coffee shop by the beach lives on.***

The coffee scene from this anime really made a huge impact on me, so this came to mind as I saw the Wild Plot Wednesday topic. :)

  2. Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara (Ride Your Wave) --- Better than I expected! :)@tegoshei719d

I was looking for another sea- or water-related animated film to watch for the monthly quest. I've watched several series in the past like Free!, Dive!!, Re-main!, Tsuritama, Nagi no Asukara, and so on. However, I have already written about them in the past and I thought it's better to watch something I haven't and talk about it.
I was in two minds whether I should watch RIDE YOUR WAVE because of the "romance" tag, but I'm glad I gave it a shot. Let's talk about it. :)

Released in 2019, Ride Your Wave revolves around the life of a Hinako Mukaimizu. She's a free-spirited girl who is bewitched by surfing and the sea. Because of that, she decided to enrol at a college in a coastal city. She hasn't really thought about her future and somehow chose this school due to its location.

Barely starting her independent life, the apartment building she lived in accidentally caught fire due to some fireworks mishap. In that certain incident, she was saved by a talented firefighter named Minato Hinageshi.

Through this encounter, the two of them became acquainted with each other quickly. Minato's reliability and passion for saving people captivated Hinako. Minato, on the other hand, was curious about surfing and wanted to try it out.

Hinako began to teach Minato how to surf. Their time surfing together gave them the chance to get to know each other more. They eventually fell in love and decided to make things official between them.

Surfing brought them enjoyment and the feeling of being free. However, we can't deny the fact that this activity can be dangerous and very unpredictable. This was what Hinako realized when a certain surfing incident occurred which impacted her life forcing her to reflect more on what to do in her future. In search for her purpose, she started to look more into herself. With Minato on her side, little by little, she force her way to find that purpose and eventually ride her own wave.

I decided against sharing the trailer on this post as it gives out several spoilers, so I suggest you watch the movie directly and not check the trailer. haha

OK... I admit, the romance part especially in the first half of the movie was cringe. hahaha I'm sure fans of the genre would enjoy it, though. Well, let's set aside the cringey part... I think Minato is such an awesome character. He's such a green flag and I wonder if guys like him really exists. lol
When the surfing incident happened in the film, that was when I told myself, "I'm glad I decided to watch this." The supernatural and drama tags entered the scene and I just couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I enjoyed it more than I expected! I really like how the story panned out. This is the kind of romance I was looking for... the not so common one. lol
I like it when I see fantasy films that I could somehow psychologically analyze and relate it to reality. Of course, I can't explain the otherworldly phenomenon, but I could somewhat understand how the characters think and why they think that way. Yes, I'm complicated... haha
As for the technical aspects of the movie, they were also to my liking. The art and animation style was clean and pretty. Well, it doesn't really top the previous movie (Kaijuu no Kodomo) I watched, but this one also has its own charm. They music they used BRAND NEW STORY by Generation from EXILE tribe was also very fitting.

There was a part in the movie where they just showed some montage while the two main characters were singing. I actually find it refreshingly good. ~~It minimized the romance part, so it's perfect~~. The recording of the characters' voices as they were singing and laughing is so cute and relatable.

All in all, it was a good movie. I'm happy I didn't skip it because of its genre.

  3. Film Review: Ride Your Wave (2019)@oryans.belt2344d

    Review

Ride Your Wave is a animated film described as a romantic fantasy, and is directed by Masaaki Yuasa. It marks my first review of a Japanese animated film, and the first that I have watched in a very long time. The film focuses on Hinako, a young girl with a real passion and love for the ocean and surfing, indeed always keeping an eye out for good days and good waves, using her bike to transport her trusty childhood surfboard to the beach for some sun, sand and surf.

Unbeknownst to Hinako, she happens to have two admirers who seem to have noticed her beach going routine and become quite impressed by the dedication and passion she shows for the hobby she loves. The two onlookers are firefighters who occupy themselves with the demands of their own profession, not knowing their paths will eventually go on to cross with hers when a group of youngsters cause an unintentional fire in the apartment block where Hinako happens to stay.As the building burns, Hinako, in her panic, takes off to the roof with her surfboard in hand, and is rescued by Minato, one of the aforementioned young and handsome firefighters familiar with her surfing exploits from a distance. This serendipitous meeting grows into something more, as the two go on to surf together, enjoy good food and coffee, sing karaoke and generally do other activities that develops them into a loving couple. Happiness abounds and all is right in the world, until it isn't, for as Minato one day decides to practise his surfing in an attempt to further impress his girlfriend, he suffers and accident at sea in an attempt to rescue someone else in need, resulting in his unexpected passing.

The sudden tragic event leaves a large hole in Hinako's life, leading her to abandon everything that would remind her of the man she loved. Curiously enough though, something strange starts to happen every time she sings a particular song that the couple both loved. As doubt turns closer to certainty, she comes to realise that singing the song causes Minato to appear in any body of water close by, and interact with her personally. The couple have a second chance at their relationship, albeit in a tremendously odd way, and go on to pick up where they left off before the tragic accident. But as time passes the inevitable realisation of the unsustainability of the relationship becomes apparent. Both characters hold each other back in different ways, riding, as Minato would say, the same wave together when really the two must stand on their own two feet and move on to the next one. This is the primary sentiment of the film as both attempt to come to grips with their respective emotions and attachments.

Ride Your Wave is a film that seemed to have had all the right pieces for a good film but came up way short on the execution. The pacing of the film felt erratic as things progressed in a way that made it very difficult to come to grips with the individual scenes and characters. This made it hard to really connect with any of them and develop a true sense of empathy for their respective journeys. Even Minato's death lacked any sense of finality or true shock, and the main character simply felt strange and unrelatable. It felt as if no genuine rapport was crafted between any of the characters, the only exception, perhaps, being Minato's tough younger sister and her selected interactions. I thought the surfing and the ocean as a whole would have provided the focal focal point for the use of metaphor, the ocean displaying its temperamental nature and uncaring character with regards to the desires and wills of all that would request to ride it. Both viciously beautiful yet tremendously dangerous, the ocean could have provided great themes to drive the message of life home, and yet it was mostly pushed to the periphery throughout. I thought the song used to call on Minato was uninspired and just plain irritating for the most part, failing to provide the heart wrenching effect that comes from watching someone desperately try to hold on to the bond that ties them to someone special.

I really wanted to like this movie and I certainly did have high expectations which is always dangerous, but in the end there was just not a good capitalization on what was otherwise a good premise. I really thought that there was a deep well of symbolism to be drawn from with regards to the craft of surfing and the ocean as a whole, and yet it seems that it just went wanting or was otherwise used in an uninspired way. The film does boast some beautiful and sleek animation, and had a few good moments, but it just wasn't enough to create a lasting impression in the end. Sadly, I would recommend that you look elsewhere for a good anime film but also recommend you decide for yourself. As always, happy viewing :).
